Dynamo to bury himself alive in December live special

Magician Dynamo is set to bury himself alive in new live special Dynamo is Dead.

The programme will culminate in the performer - real name Steven Frayne - burying his own grave, where he will lay his creation to rest.

In the run-up to the finale, Dynamo will go on a mental health journey. At rock bottom, the magician struggles with loss of identity, but manages to find the strength to move onto the next chapter of his life and career.

Along the way, he reaches out to such famous faces as Cara Delevingne, Tyson Fury, Demi Lovato, and Steven Bartlett. Each conversation gets Dynamo closer to the empowerment necessary to let go of the past.

Among Dynamo's best-known tricks are walking on the River Thames in 2011 for his show Dynamo: Magician Impossible. He has also levitated off the side of a double decker bus, and above The Shard, the tallest building in the UK.

Dynamo is Dead was commissioned by Phil Edgar-Jones, director of Sky Arts and Entertainment, and Zai Bennett, Sky's managing director of content. Expectation TV and Seventeen are co-producing, with Dynamo, Rowland French, Ben Wicks and Josh Berger executive producing.

Dynamo is Dead will be broadcast at 9.00pm on Thursday 14 December on Sky Max and streaming platform NOW.

5. Goldfinger And Stoner On The Magic Word Podcast

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

I have been out of pocket for a few weeks since my last update here. I was traveling plus having heart surgery. All went well, thank you. I got to my destination and back with no problems. Oh, and my surgery was successful, too. I'm home and recovering from an Ablation which is a pretty common operation for A-Fib. Anyway, I should be back to normal (whatever that is) sometime soon. I thank all of you who reached out to contact me to inquire about my health. It meant the world to me.

But two weeks ago I traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, for TRICS convention with some really top-notch performers/lecturers. I cannot see how that event will ever repeat itself because it was so awesome. Organizer, Scott Robinson, overbooked the event so we had not one but two nights of public shows. You can listen to the daily reports wherever you get your podcasts, or visit here:

Day Three:

Then last week we released our chat with Jack Goldfinger, Director of Entertainment for the Magic Castle. This historic podcast was the 800th episode of the Magic Word and is quite a milestone but still a little way away from our 1,000th episode. Jack is a wealth of information and wisdom which is why I call him the "Yoda of Magic." I think you will enjoy this very special episode. And if you do, then please be sure to tell Jack when you next see him. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts. But for more information including videos and photos, please visit:

This week we are releasing another conversation held during one of the summer magic conventions. Dick Stoner is a pioneer of the trade show market and has owned and operated Stoners Funstore since 1949. There are few brick and mortar magic shops that have existed that long. You can hear the episode wherever you get your podcasts, or visit here: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/802-dick-stoner

6. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #134

Message by Paul Stone (US)

In last week's Magic Museum Ballachini article, Wittus Witt mentioned that he first met me in the 1970's. My first memories of him was at the FISM Convention in Vienna in 1976.

In the FISM competition, together with his stage partner, I believe named Roy Gardner, (I'm sure I'll be corrected next week if I've got that wrong!) he played the part of a butler, with a hilarious comedy act that stole the show, and I remember it clearly to this day.

The winner of the Grand Prix at that FISM was a wonderful French performer named Pierre Brahma. It was the second time that he won a FISM Grand Prix with his manipulation act, which was particularly remarkable considering that he was partially deaf, the result of a severe case of scarlet fever when he was thirteen years old.

That was my first visit to the beautiful city of Vienna, and probably my stand out memory was the Welcome Reception in the spectacular Vienna Town Hall. It was breathtaking.

The only other time that I travelled to Vienna was in the summer of 2008, where I had the good fortune to spend a couple of days there with Siegfried Fischbacher.

I took him to see the Palazzo Show. In case you don't know what a Palazzo Show is, it is something of a German tradition, with Palazzo Shows in Munich and Mannheim, although there are now Palazzo Shows in other European cities too. And it is quite a pricey event.

The shows are held in a Spiegeltent, the one we went to had stained glass windows! The audience are in the round, with a very small performing area in the centre. The evening, which lasts for at least four hours, is all based around a 5 course meal, created by a celebrity chef, and served by a team of smartly dressed, and co-ordinated waiters, who march in to the backing of music played by a live umpah style band.

A number of uniquely dressed characters mix and mingle with the guests throughout the night, and the whole evening is hosted by a comedy performer, in the guise of a chef who expertly guides the audience through the evening's entertainment.

Between each course, a top speciality act performs their act. These range from high wire trapeze acts, to sharpshooters to illusionists, all performed superbly in a very tight working space.

When I walked in with Siegfried, the buzz of excitement spread throughout like wildfire, especially from the performers, and it was a memorable evening. We had a great time and Siegfried was very gracious and signed autographs nonstop!

8. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 56
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

By the time you read this, a major event at the Bellachini Museum will have already made history. The opening of the exhibition for Alexander Adrion was scheduled for Saturday, 18 November. As I have written before, Alexander Adrion was one of the most prominent magicians of the 20th century in Germany. One of his books was even translated into Japanese. Who can boast something similar? But I am particularly pleased that his widow, Anne Engelsleben, will be attending the opening together with her two children. Mrs Engelsleben is already over 90 years old, but "fit as a fiddle", as we say in Germany. I correspond with her several times a month by e-mail.

She recently pointed out an error in Adrion's biography. It was only a small mistake, but it was a mistake nonetheless. I had misspelled the date of birth of an artist on a supplementary sheet. An artist who had created an object, a bronze, for Alexander Adrion. I then corrected the insert and had it reprinted. Mrs Engelsleben was astonished but also delighted.

The artist's name is Rudolf Peer. He is a well-known German sculptor. He made a bronze of Adrion's head. As far as I know, there are only a few magicians of whom bronzes or busts have been made. I don't know of any other magicians in Germany. You can clearly see this bronze in the film accompanying the exhibition:

That's all for today.

Teaching the Secrets of Magic?

I have signed the Oath of Secrecy on the back of the membership cards of the major magic organizations, so how can I teach the secrets of magic to kids?

In the first place, I only teach them to kids who have made a commitment to learn magic. The kids who attend magic camps have paid (or their parents have paid) for the privilege. They are interested, and are making a commitment beyond just looking at YouTube magic videos.
And the first thing we do is have them sign an Oath of Secrecy. We explain that magic is no more than a puzzle unless it is invested with storytelling and showmanship.

When I started teaching beginning magic classes, I made sure that I was teaching tricks that were appropriate for a beginner. I taught the Linking Paper Clips, but not the Chinese linking rings. I taught the jumping rubber band, but not Crazy Man Handcuffs. I taught the 1089 trick, but not Mental Epic.

I teach a restored string trick, but not the Cut and Restored Rope. I refuse to teach Professor's Nightmare. I don't teach tricks that the kids might see at a birthday party magic show.

Lesson One is always "Rules for magicians". Lesson Two is "Tools of the Magician's Trade". I have an entire class on card tricks, but I stick to the basics. (I never teach "Out of This World!")

If you are looking for tricks to teach beginners, look in some of the best beginners books. Focus on the books designed for kids. Give the kids an opportunity to perform, to show off what they have learned.

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

12. Choice and Chance - John Carey #216
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

Choice and Chance is a fun and strong production effect, ideal as an opener. There is a small set up: Take out the four Sevens and place one on top of the deck and the other three Sevens at positions 6, 7 and 8 from the top. Bring out the deck and execute any false shuffle that retains
your top stock intact.

"Mary, life is all about choices and chances. We all have to make decisions and sometimes grasp opportunities." Hand the face-down deck to your spectator. Ask her to cut off about a quarter and table them to your left. Next have her cut off another quarter and table next to and to the right of
the first packet. Have her repeat this and place that packet to the right of the first two packets and then place the remaining packet down furthest to the right, forming a row of four packets. Pause a few moments, to shift the focus as you comment on how well she did her job. You will next ask her to gather up the packets in a certain way.

Imagine the packets are numbered 1-4 from left to right. Ask the lady to pick up packet 1 and drop it on top of packet 3. Next ask her to pick up packet 2 and drop that on top of packet 4. Finally have her place packet 1/3 on top of packet 2/4 and square up. This application of John Bannon's Double Dutch false cut retains the top stock. Take off the top card of the deck and place it face down in front of your helper.

Pick up the deck and state that you will firstly deal with choice. Deal and spell one card for each letter of that word into a face-down packet. Take the last card dealt and place it next to the spectators card that she cut to. Pick up the packet and drop it on top of the deck. Pick up the deck and hold it in dealers grip. Optional false cut here now if you so decide. "We have dealt with choice, so let's move onto chance." Repeat the deal spell like before, dealing and spelling one card for each letter of the word chance into a face-down packet.

Take the last card dealt and place that next to the other two cards, the card they cut to being the middle card of a row of three. Drop the deck on top of the dealt packet and pick it up. "Mary, would you say you are an impulsive person?" Execute a slip shuffle, retaining the bottom card- the other seven on the bottom of the deck as you address the lady. Execute another slip shuffle and ask her to call out stop purely on impulse. Square up and place the deck on her hand. "Let's see what card you cutto earlier? Ah, a Seven!

A lucky number. Now let'ssee what choice turned up. A Seven, maybe just a lucky coincidence. But you never know what chance may show up. That's spooky, yet another Seven. I'm almost too scared to ask you to turn over the deck and see what is there. And that's incredible!" So as in the above script, reveal her cut card is a Seven, then the choice and chance cards and finally have her turn the deck face-up to reveal the final lucky seven to put the magical icing on the cake!
