4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #128

Message by Paul Stone (US)

I spent a few days last week visiting friends in Atlanta, and whilst there I accepted a kind invitation from Past International IBM President Ken Scott to attend the Atlanta Harvest of Magic Convention which he was producing.

The Convention was dedicated to two very popular personalities and talented magicians, Dan Garrett and Scott Alexander who both sadly left us in the last 12 months.

I was accompanied to the Convention with my good friend, ventriloquist Mark Merchant, himself a native of Atlanta, and someone who is always great fun to be with. I first met Mark when we were both performing on a cruise ship, the Crystal Serenity, a few years ago, and we have remained firm friends since then.

I was particularly looking forward to meeting another old friend at the Convention, Harry Allen, long-time owner of Daytona Magic in Florida.

I've known Harry for over 30 years since I booked him to lecture to my home magic society in UK, the Liverpool Mahatma Magic Circle.

Harry wisely presented the Convention's first lecture, actually it was more of a Dealers Dem, allowing him to promote most of the items for sale at his Dealers booth, and so make the maximum number of sales! He knows the game inside out!

What I like about Harry is that he is 'old school', and most of his gags are too! But they are quick fire, one after another, and delivered with an ease and nonchalance that you simply have to admire and smile at!

One of the other Dealers at this Convention was Paul Richards, someone who for some unknown reason I had not been aware of until a few years ago when I met him at one of the Real Magic Roadshows in Leeds in England.

Having been mentored by the inimitable Ken Brooke, I've always loved watching good 'demmers', and Paul is definitely up there with the best in the business. Knowing how to 'dem' is an art in itself, and there are a few different styles.

One of the other featured Dealers in the Real Magic Roadshows is Mark Mason, originally from Blackpool, then Florida, and now based and happily ensconced in Spain.

Mark is nothing short of a sensational 'demmer' and he learnt his trade on the market stands in the North of England and, similarly to Ken Brooke, 'dems' in much more of the style of a classic pitchman.

Paul Richards has a less manic, and dare I say without meaning any disrespect to Mark Mason, whom I rate as the number one 'demmer' on the planet, a classier approach.

Paul has originated several outstanding effects that in his hands flow superbly and he makes it all look so easy, which of course it's not!

Paul and his lovely wife had just returned from Germany where they had toured with the Real Magic Roadshows. One of the team of Dealers at these roadshows is Christian Schenk, who owns the successful magic business, 'Card Shark'.

I mention this because he has recently released 'Paul Stone's Gems from the Desert', a collection of five very commercial but easy to learn card effects, complete with a nice leather wallet. Definitely worth checking out. I would say that of course!

Finally, this week I want to remember another good friend of mine, and of magicians around the world, Roy Horn.

His Birthday was on October 3rd, and on that date 20 years ago the accident with Montecore took place at the Mirage Hotel & Casino that ended Siegfried & Roy's stellar career. Their show was without doubt the greatest 'live' show that I have ever seen.

5. Updates From The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

The Magic Word Podcast has been on the road over the last few weeks and not posted podcast updates on the Magic New Zealand e-zine. I first want to thank my hosts in Munich and Berlin - Uwe Sperlich and Freddie Rutz, respectively - for arranging my lecture for their cities. Both groups were delightful, warm, hospitable and seemed to enjoy my lecture. My visit to various attractions will forever remain as pleasant memories as I traveled with my two adult children from Munich to Prague to Berlin then back south to Bavaria and the beautiful Alps. We enjoyed beers at Oktoberfest and the views from atop mountain peaks and everything in between.
But in the meantime, while I was gone, I released a couple podcasts that I hope you didn't miss. But if you did, then here is what was broadcast over the past two weeks. First was a visit with Greg Frewin who talked about his career as an illusionist who formerly performed his bird act with Jason Byrne then alone with big cats ending up in Niagara Falls with his own theater. As he contemplates his eventual retirement, he is making plans to hand over the wand (so to speak) to young Christian Mascia, who is a dynamic young illusionist who is making a name for himself on stage.
This is an interesting perspective for all of us on how to pass on our knowledge to the next generation of magicians. And, BTW, Greg will be one of the featured acts at Magic At The Beach this weekend.
You can listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts, but for more information, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/791-greg-frewin

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Last week we released a podcast that was recorded at the 2023 F.F.F.F. convention in Buffalo, New York, with Master Magician, Chris Capehart. Chris is a self-avowed street magician though he spends much of his time performing on cruise ships and for corporate and private affairs. He shares several stories "from the street" that are both entertaining and exciting. He explains the ins and outs and courtesies one must appreciate as a street performer. As always, you can listen wherever you get your podcasts, but to view videos, see photos, read the blog, get links, and listen online, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/792-chris-capehart

This week we are on the road again traveling to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for Magic At The Beach. This is an older convention that has been on hiatus for the past decade. Charles Bach and a few others are "putting the band back together" with some pretty incredible acts like Dan Harlan, Eric Buss, Greg Frewin, Kerry Pollock, John Shryock, Chip Romero and many others. You can listen to daily updates from this convention beginning with the first day of activities at https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/793-magic-at-the-beach-2023-day-one then come back each day for two more daily updates.
Also, as you prepare for the upcoming holiday season of gift giving, please remember that the Magic Word is in the affiliate program of Amazon. That means if you want to help the podcast, then you should make all your purchases through the link that is at the bottom of every page on our website at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/

9. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 49

Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

I was especially looking forward to this issue. It is the 50th episode. The number 50 has a very special meaning for me this year. Exactly 50 years ago, I started doing magic on the road. Wow!

It all started in 1973 at the FISM World Congress in Paris. My first big, international congress, and I think back on it very fondly. It was a FISM congress that even today is still remembered by many magicians as a particularly beautiful one. Above all, it was marked by a great social evening at Versailes Castle. The buffet offered was one of the best ever given at a FISM Congress.

For me, it was during this congress that I met the wonderful US magician Judy Carter, who is now a hot comedy writer in her home country.

She later visited me in Düsseldorf, where I was still studying at the Art Academy with Joseph Beuys.

One evening she said the meaningful phrase: Come on, Wittus, we're going to do magic in the street.

From then on I was a very happy street magician, but I never wanted to make magic my profession. But then this happened. While I was still finishing my studies, I kept performing magic on the streets of Düsseldorf in the summertime. But I also performed in other countries. Wherever I went on vacation, I had my bag with the magic props with me. So I performed magic in France and also in Canada.

One of the most beautiful experiences with street magic I had in 1979, when the Belgian magician and dealer Klingsor had engaged me for the FISM congress in Brussels. I performed on the big square in Brussels in front of hundreds of spectators, which a photographer captured in the picture. This was on the front page of the local newspaper in Brussels the next day, which reported on the magic congress.

And then came the big turn. After about two years, in 1975, a television editor discovered me and asked if I would like to appear on his show. Of course I wanted to. And then it became more and more appearances on television and thereby also forced appearances on other festivals, because the people in front of the television sets asked for me ... but then I had to decide, what is my hobby and what is my profession. And so I became a full-time magician and very, very happy with that.

You can see some pictures and impressions of that street time and the big picture of Brussels on YouTube here:

See you next time

Even More Magic Auction!

I have been telling you about "The World-Famous Austin Magic Auction," which has become the largest annual magic auction in the world.
The 1997 auction was dedicated to Louis Berkie, proprietor of the ELBEE Company and Fun'n Magic Shop in San Antonio for nearly fifty years…appropriate, since the very first auction in 1975 consisted of items from his shop. (Berkie was also my personal mentor in magic.) Held in Westgate Mall, this became the last of the IBM Ring 60 Magic Auctions.
In 1998, my wife Margot and I had the wonderful opportunity to travel with a "Marketing Magic" lecture tour in New Zealand, and with Ring 60's approval, the Austin auction was taken over by the Fort Worth Magic Club. It was renamed the "Lone Star Magic Auction," and continued for several years.
Eventually, the auction returned to Austin, due to Ron Cartlidge's love for the event, which got him actively involved with the Austin magic community. Celebrity auctioneers have included Scott wells, David Hira, Brad Henderson, Trixie Bond, and Chip Romero.
Chip Romero insists that his magical career started when he bought a Hat Box Illusion sold by Bobby Cordell at the auction, many years ago. Chip will be on the auctioneer team for this year's auction.
The World-Famous Austin Magic Auction is now supported by both IBM Ring 60 and SAM Assembly 206, as well as Fantastic Magic Camp and my Fantastic Magic Center.
The auction continues on November 4, 2023. The Texas Collectors meet the night before. For more information, just go to www.AustinMagicAuction.com

Historical information about the World-Famous Austin Magic Auction is displayed at my Fantastic Magic Center.

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

11. Think A Force - John Carey #213
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)

Anything done with a thought of card is usually a strong effect. Think a force is a utility force of a thought of card that is pretty much self-working, with the exception of the all-important presentation of course. The hardest part of doing this is not to laugh. Yes it's very cheeky!

The top half of the deck should consist of all spot cards, with the exception of one picture card that you will force. Let's say that card is the Jack of Diamonds. Position that card about fifteenth from the top. Execute any convincing false shuffle as you deliver the all-important opening gambit.

"Michael, cards have been used for generations by gypsies and psychics to tell the past, present and future. There are two types of cards. Number cards and?" They will answer picture cards. "Picture cards are the easiest to visualize. Please just quickly think of any one you see. Got it? Get it? Good." Simply spread the top half of the deck widely and raise the spread and faces towards your helper. Pause about three seconds and square up. Your job is done. They are thinking of the Jack of Diamonds. Hand out the deck for shuffling and proceed with your mystery...
