I first met Brad Zinn just over 25 years ago, when our family moved from the UK to live in Tempe, Arizona.

Brad was a producer, host and magician and one of a number of prominent magicians who had started out their performing life in the Phoenix area. Names that included such luminaries as The Keeners (Ed & Nancy), Diana Zimmerman, Andre Kole, Bert Easley, Danny Dew, Michael Finney, Lee Earle, and Kenton Knepper.

Before I tell you a little more about Brad Zinn, he has specifically asked to mention the www.PhoenixMagicHistory.com website which he has lovingly set up for people to learn about the many fine acts that have come from the Phoenix area over the years.

I met up again with Brad and his wife Brenda, alias Ms Bre, in Phoenix a couple of days ago. Due to very unfortunate bouts of ill health suffered by both Brad & Brenda, and the onset of the pandemic, it had been a few years since I'd seen them.

Brad & I have one thing in common, we both love Variety Acts and he is also a Vaudeville aficionado, and has spent years helping to preserve the memory of those great performers of yesteryear.

When I say that I will tell you a little more about Brad, it is not such an easy thing to do. Why not, you may ask?

I mentioned to Brad that I would feature him in my article in Magic New Zealand this week, and I asked him to send me some notes about his career.

Within hours, Brad had sent me enough material to fill a book! There's no way I can even begin to do him justice here, but I'll try to share just a few highlights of his career.

The first thing that impressed me about Brad, and still does to this day, is his speaking voice. Similar to another well-known magical performer, the legendary Peter Reveen, Brad has a wonderfully rich and deep voice, which stands him apart from most other performers, and makes him a perfect radio show or podcast host.

Brad's performing career started at the age of 5 years old. He began doing magic at 9, turned 'pro' at 17, and was working on the Las Vegas Strip within a year!

His first gig was at 'The Centrefold' which was the Bar/Casino that took over 'The Jolly Trolley' across from the Sahara Hotel. Brad, assisted by Brenda, did about 15 minutes with doves and the ZigZag illusion, between the various routines of the dancers.

Both Brad & Brenda were underage, but no-one ever found out, although when they returned to Vegas a few months later in June 1976 to appear at the Entertainer Club, they had to be fingerprinted and photographed by the Clark County Sheriff's office, and get a signed letter of permission from both their parents to work in Vegas!

Whilst working at the Entertainer's Club, Brad became friendly with iconic Vegas magician, Jimmy Grippo, who was working his wonders at Caesar's Palace.

At that time, Brad & Brenda also got to know Mike Skinner, Gary Darwin and Daniel Cros, who was working at the Desert Inn.

One night Brad was at Gary Darwin's Midnight Magic Club, and Siegfried - (Siegfried & Roy had not yet become huge Superstars) arrived at the club and was rather antsy. It turned out that he was waiting for a delivery that was on its way from the airport.

Eventually a pick-up truck showed up, and everyone went out to the parking lot to see what Siegfried was so hyped up about. All Siegfried would say was 'This is gonna change magic!'

There was a wooden crate which filled the bed of the truck. It was absolutely square and very large.

All will be revealed …. Next week!

We just finished a tremendously successful Texas Association of Magicians (TAOM) convention in Houston. Many said it was the best convention of the year and others said it was one of the best TAOM conventions in their history. Suffice it to say that if you weren't there, then the next best thing would be listen to the four daily updates from the convention.

Day One:
https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/785-taom-2023-day-one

Day Two:

Day Three:

Day Four:

One of the hot performers that had everyone talking was a magician who resides in Houston, Harry Maurer. He is best known for being a cruise ship magician, but he is much more than that. In his storied career going back to his college days of performing 1,500 shows at the Playboy Club, he was Entertainer of the Year in Atlantic City, and toured with Joey Bishop (one of the members of the Rat Pack) plus he is an avowed expert on Maskelyne, the War Magician. In this week's episode, Harry shares stories and advice that is well worth your time to listen.

You can listen wherever you get your podcasts, but to watch videos, read the blog, see some candid photos, get a link to buying a copy of the War Magician book, listen online, and more, then please visit:

In a few weeks, the so-called Hamburg Magic Nights will begin for the 13th time. From 21 to 23 September, a special magic play will be shown each evening in a well-known Hamburg theatre. This time I was able to invite four wonderful colleagues to show their art.

Wolfgang Moser from Austria will kick things off. Wolfgang is a very talented young magician. His techniques are extremely high and his presentation is always sophisticated down to the last detail.

On the second evening, a young group consisting of Jan Logemann, Manuel Muerte and Patrick Folkerts will perform. Logemann and Muerte are FISM prize winners. Together with their friend Patrick, they have chosen themes from the history of magic to develop an exciting programme.
On the afternoon of the third day, my friend and colleague Stefan Alexander Rautenberg quotes from famous novels that feature a magician. He will then perform the tricks described in the novels.

Finally, in the evening, Cody Stone will perform magic with modern props such as an iPad and a drone.

I founded the Magic Nights - as already written - 13 years ago in Hamburg. I am not supported by the cultural office or anyone else. I have to raise all the costs myself. But fortunately the contracts are made directly between the artists and the theatre. It is split 60 to 40, so 60 per cent of the income goes to the artist, 40 per cent is for the theatre.

The only money I receive are amounts paid for advertisements that I publish in the accompanying programme booklet.

You can see the full programme here:

That's all for today.

The Texas Magic Center

Last week, I told you that "Everything is bigger in Texas." But what does Texas have to match the legendary Magic Castle in Los Angeles, David Copperfield's amazing museum in Las Vegas, or the magnificent Magic Circle Headquarters in London?

Well…nothing yet. But a team of talented Texas magicians is working to change that. What is the Texas Magic Center? For now, it is just a dream. But it is a wonderful, amazing, magical dream that may start coming to life sooner than you think!

Picture a wonderful property that includes a world-class museum focusing especially on Texas magicians such as Willard the Wizard, Walter "Zaney" Blaney and Mark Wilson, among others. Ramon Galindo, the "Birdman of Austin." Ray Anderson of Esther's Follies fame. And it can feature Houdini's Texas Tours, and Blackstone's time as a student at the University of Texas.
There will be a research library with thousands of books, periodicals, catalogs and correspondence related to the art of conjuring. Posters, souvenir programs, business cards, photos, props and so much more.

And of course, there will be at least one theatre, a place for public performances to be sure.
Restaurant and cocktail lounge with a magic theme? A boutique hotel? Magic classes for children and adults? If we can dream it, we can create it…even without a Genie and 3 wishes (although I'll bet GENII, the Conjuror's Magazine, will be interested).

Perhaps the Texas Association of Magicians will have a real home.

How big will it be? Everything is bigger in Texas!

Go to www.TexasMagicCenter.com and let us know if you are interested. You don't even have to be in Texas!

MY Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. But I can't do it without your help. My Patreon account is the same place as my free weekly podcast:

8. Ambitious Interchange - John Carey #209

I've always enjoyed working on effects where one or a series of smaller effects aid you in accomplishing a far stronger effect. We use this ploy in the following pocket interchange style effect. It's extremely direct and practical.

From a shuffled deck in use, remove three of the Queens and table them in a face-up tabled row. Spread the face-up deck and have any three number/spot cards selected and, if you wish get them signed on their face. Take the three selections and flip them face-down into left hand dealing
grip. The right hand picks up one of the Queens and inserts it face-down second from the bottom via a left pinky pull down move. Slowly push it home and square up. "These ladies are ambitious and want to get to the top!"

Make the moment over the packet and then execute a block push off and triple turnover, revealing the Queen has risen to the top. Pause a beat and then repeat the triple turnover, turning the card/s face-down. The right hand takes off the top card and inserts it into the right trousers pocket. Pick up a second Queen and as before insert it second from the bottom of the packet, but leave it in-jogged about two inches. Flip the packet face-up and slowly push the Queen home square. Turn the packet face-down and a moment later execute a triple turnover revealing this Queen has risen to the summit. A moment later carry out another triple turnover and take off the top card and insert that card into your right jacket pocket.

"Two down and one to go!" As you say this casually flash a selection on the bottom of the packet and then reverse count this packet and square up. Pick up the remaining Queen and just like earlier insert it second from the bottom with a pinky pull down move. Push it home square. "By now, you know what's going to happen and where!" Casually turn the top card face-up as you say this, showing a signed selection. Then flip it face-down. Make the moment and execute a triple turnover, revealing that Queen has risen to the top. Triple turnover and insert the top card into your outer breast pocket, leaving it protruding.

So we have just completed a nice three phase ambitious card sequence, but more importantly we have set up the pocket interchange finale in the process. "Those ladies are indeed extremely ambitious, but your selections even more so. Watch!" Execute a Vernon through the fist flourish, turning the packet face-up and then spreading to reveal a triple transformation into the Queens. Drop them to the table. A few moments later the right hand removes a card from the right trousers, jacket and outer breast pockets and reveals the signed selections have amazingly teleported!

Beam me up Scotty!!!
