4. Steve Aldrich On The Magic Word Podcast

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

As the Grateful Dead would sing, "what a long strange trip it's been." This week we put on our tie-dyed t-shirts and climb aboard the flowered hippie VW bus for a visit in the great northwest near Yakima, Washington, to visit with Steve Aldrich. It's been nearly four decades since we last spoke with each other. He was a pioneer in our magical art whom us old timers remember but might be new to those born after 1980.

Among his many credits, Steve replaced Bob Sheets at the Tower Bar in Snowmass, Colorado, when Doc Eason was still a waiter there and didn't even know the Imp Bottle trick. Steve went on to help form the iconic "Foan Family Circus" which was an ensemble troupe of magicians, musicians and jugglers who used comedy and original music to entertain magicians at magic conventions in the late 1970's and early 1980's. A couple of their more well-known skits included a parody or "The 12 Days of Christmas (Magic)" and a Kuda Bux routine.

You can listen to the episode wherever you get your podcasts. But for more information, watch the videos, hear the music of Kathi DeFrancis, get a link to receiving a FREE set of Steve's lecture notes, see some photos and listen online, please visit:

Award-Winning Conjurors Arthur Trace, Chris Capehart, Devlin, Stoil and Ekaterina, and Amanda Nepo will Amaze Audiences in a One-Night Only Extravaganza of Magic.

Mark Mitton Honored as Magician of the Year

Six award-winning magicians, who have amazed audiences in the world's most influential magic venues, will appear April 15 at 7 pm in the 114th annual Salute to Magic show, presented by the Parent Assembly of the Society of American Magicians. The featured acts range from Arthur Trace, an award-winner at FISM, the prestigious World Championships of Magic, to Amanda Nepo a 17 year-old conjuror and magic inventor performing the original act with which she fooled Penn & Teller on their TV show Penn & Teller: Fool Us. The other equally talented and amazing acts include Stoil & Ekaterina, Devlin and Chris Capehart (who also fooled Penn & Teller in his Fool Us appearance). Mark Mitton, an acclaimed magician, event producer and magic consultant as well as a longtime member of Parent Assembly will be honored as Magician of the Year.

The show will be held in the historic Playhouse Theatre at the Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand Street, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. For show details including ticketing, go to salutetomagic.com.

"We are so pleased to have brought together these talented and diverse performers," said Robert Braun who is producing the show for Parent Assembly. "The evening will feature a fast-paced quick change act, wry and hilarious comedy, strikingly original takes on classic tricks, and innovative new magic from an up and coming magician who already has made a mark in the field. It is rare to have conjurors of this calibre together in one show and any lovers of magic, including families looking for a great evening of entertainment should make sure to attend."

Featured Acts:

Chris Capehart: Hilarious and influential Master Magician who fooled Penn & Teller in his appearance on their show with his "Jedi Mind Tricks".

Devlin, acclaimed magician and magic consultant, direct from appearing in Criss Angel's Las Vegas spectacular, Amystika.

Amanda Nepo, 17 year-old performer and magic inventor who fooled Penn & Teller on their show Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Inventor of tricks marketed by one of the world's most influential magic companies. Recently lectured at the Blackpool Magic Convention in Blackpool, England.
Stoil & Ekaterina, performing quick changes and silk magic.

Mark Mitton, Parent Assembly's Magician of the Year, will perform his signature Sushi Mat trick.

Magician of the Year:

For many years the Salute to Magic has been the occasion for the Assembly to honor its Magician of the Year, a notable figure in the field of magic or someone who has substantially contributed to the mission of the organization. This year's honoree is Mark Mitton, who is both an internationally recognized and highly influential professional magician as well as an event producer, magic consultant, and actor. Mark has created magic for Broadway, Hollywood films, and Cirque du Soleil and produced an array of high-profile international events.

Parent Assembly, Society of American Magicians:

Founded in 1902, Parent Assembly, the New York City chapter of the Society of American magicians, is the oldest magic organization in the United States and the largest of the S.A.M.'s local affiliates. The Assembly promotes and elevates the art of magic by presenting shows for the public, holding monthly membership meetings often featuring magic instruction from notable magicians, and performing shows for community organizations at no charge to them. Through its meetings and other activities, the Assembly engenders camaraderie in the magic community leading to collaboration and to a wide variety of official and casual projects.

Salute to Magic:

The Salute to Magic was first presented in 1909 and is the oldest continuing magic show in the United States. The annual event has featured some of the most legendary talents of magic including Harry Houdini, Dai Vernon, Joseph Dunninger, Blackstone, and The Amazing Randi.

6. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 20

Message by Wittus witt (Germany)

Slowly, museum life is becoming a daily routine. Monday to Wednesday I am "off duty" and from Thursday to Sunday I am "on duty" at the museum. Visitors still come to the museum every day. This is certainly mainly due to the good location of the museum. It couldn't be more central. Directly behind the main railway station, which is really only 2 real minutes away. But reviews on Google and on the Tripadvisor platform are also very helpful. It is also important not to overlook the fact that Hamburg is a city of millions, very popular in Germany and very intensively visited by tourists.

By the time you read these lines, an exhibit will have left the museum. The magic box owned by the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The box is going back to the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf. BUT - I was allowed to make a true-to-original copy of the box, which I succeeded in doing. The copy really looks very, very similar to the original, although not all parts work as they did in the original. For example, the millet bell looks deceptively real, but I have not been able to reproduce the mechanics inside (not yet) .

On the other hand, the copies of "Bonus Genius" (also known as "Jean de la Vigne" in French) are successful. A wood sculptor carved them for me and they work exactly like the original. The Bonus Genius is mainly known from many French magic boxes, but I have only seen it very rarely in German boxes and not in this way either.

In one of my next editions of "A-B-C der Taschenspieler-Kunst" I will present the Goethe box with the original props in great detail. It really is unique. I am pleased that I can at least show an impression of the box's props in my museum.

Thank you for your interest.

I'm now back in Las Vegas after returning from England and the Blackpool Magic Convention. Whilst as you would expect in February the weather was cold, it was dry.

The same can't be said about Las Vegas! I'm sitting here in a café in Summerlin, looking out of the window and it's snowing! People are excited and rushing outside taking photos. Definitely not why I moved to Vegas!

Although I flagged it before I left for the UK, I didn't mention Dave Baram's 'Ball & Vase' short movie in my convention report last week. We showed the movie and did a Q&A after, and it was well received.

The story line is about an ailing and lonely 92 year old professor and magic hobbyist, played by veteran American actor, Austin Pendleton. It's a moving and poignant story and one with which I'm sure many people in the magic world can relate.

I have many fond memories of the Blackpool Magic Convention, as I have been attending it for over 50 years. From its early days when the convention was held at the Pleasure Beach for around 500 attendees and a dozen dealers. A far cry from the convention today with 4,000 attendees and 150 Dealers!

And I've been responsible for arranging the booking of many top performers, names that include Fred Kaps, Johnny Paul, Michael Ammar, Juan Tamariz, Lance Burton, Lynette Chappell, and Mike Hammer.

One final piece of news from Blackpool. Mac King has been confirmed as one of the Headline Stars for next year's convention.

And Dave Baram's alter ego, David Carlo, will be resuming his very successful 'Modern Parlor Magic' Show at the Millenium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles from April. I believe he will be performing 5 shows every weekend, but final details are still to be announced. Definitely one to watch out for if you are in the area.

Houdini's Stocks of Zanzibar
First, let me acknowledge that I have no evidence that Harry Houdini actually performed anything resembling the "Stocks of Zanzibar." But it is an escape trick, and we tend to invoke his name whenever possible.

My version of the illusion was built and originally performed by "The Great Scott and Judy," Austin's dominant magical team for several decades. When Fred Scott Donaldson retired from performing, I bought the illusion from him…along with the rights to perform their original routine.

Scott and Judy combined this illusion with Metamorphosis. Scott would lock Judy into the stocks, claim that she would attempt to escape, and lift a curtain. At the count of three, the curtain was dropped and not only had Judy escaped, but Scott was now locked in!

I loved their routine, and have performed it many times with many different assistants. But the most memorable performance was for a press conference in which Jim Baldauf displayed some of the Houdini artifacts that he had collected. We were at the Driskill Hotel, where the Houdini's stayed when performing in Austin.

I performed the illusion with my daughter, Carolyn Kim Cummins, but the most impressive part of the presentation was not the trick itself. It was the fact that Carolyn was wearing a stage coat that had been made and worn by Bess Houdini for a European tour!

Bess had apparently given it to the wife of an acrobat friend, who left it for her husband, who eventually gave it to a kid who loved magic: Jim Baldauf.

That stage coat is now on display in David Copperfield's Las Vegas Museum, but photos, posters, video and other artifacts are proudly displayed at my Fantastic Magic Center in Georgetown, Texas.

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic.

The following small packet piece was directly inspired by my friend Cameron Francis' effect Precursor from his Moment's Notice 10 Ebook. I really liked the general effect but wanted to make a few changes to suit my style.

Take out the Aces and three black spot cards from the deck and put the deck aside. Lay out the Aces face-up in a tabled row. Display the three spot cards and flip them face-down into the left hand. Pick up the Ace at the left of the row and execute a pinky pull down of the bottom card of
the left hands packet. Insert the Ace into the gap and slowly square up. A moment later execute a block push-off of everything above the bottom card and flip three cards over as one to reveal the Ace has risen mysteriously to the top. Pause a beat and then repeat the block push-off, turning a triple card face-down. Deal the top card face-down in front of a spectator.

Pick up the next Ace from the table and, as above, insert it second from bottom with a pinky pull down, but leave it in-jogged about a third of its length. Flip the packet face-up to show the Ace protruding and then flip the packet face-down and push the Ace square. Make the moment and
execute a triple turnover to display the Ace has risen to the summit. A moment later turn the triple card face-down and deal the top card on top of the first card placed in front of the spectator.

Casually flash the face of the packet you are holding, showing a spot card. Then with the cards face-down casually reverse count them. Pick up the next Ace and again, just as before, insert it second from bottom with a left pinky pull down. Slowly push it home square. "You know by now what's going to happen and where!" As you finish this sentence flip the top card of the packet face-up to display a black spot card. A moment later turn it face-down and a beat later execute a triple turnover to reveal the Ace. Turn the triple card face-down and deal off the top card on top of the two cards in front of the spectator.

Ask your helper to cover those three cards with a palm down hand. Pick up the remaining Ace and flip it face-down on top of your packet. "To finish I will attempt to teleport that Ace over to join the ones under your hand." Make the moment and ask the spectator to lift their hand and turn their cards over. They should be pleasantly shocked to reveal those cards are the black spot cards. Turn your cards face-up to reveal the Aces and the mystery is finished.
