Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

We visit with the esoteric this week by chatting with Jeanette Andrews. With her background and interest in art, she has found a niche market to entertain not only corporate audiences with her act, but mainly patrons of art galleries and museums. She intently focuses on chipping away at her act to make her performances clear yet mysterious. Jeanette was a student of the late Eugene Burger who influenced not only her performing style but also her spartan lifestyle. This is a most interesting episode with someone who might influence you and your performing style as well.

You can listen to this week's episode wherever you get your podcasts. But for more information, videos, blog, photos and to listen online, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/733-jeanette-andrews

This week we kick off the new year by welcoming two new Friends of the Magic Word, Dan Fleshman and Michael Noonan. Welcome and thank you, gentlemen, for your financial support and for using the "annual pledge" option on Patreon.com to make your ongoing commitment.

Our sponsor this week is the Winter Carnival of Magic in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which will be held on March 9-11, 2023. Please visit our Convention Guide page for a link to their website for more information and please listen to the audio promo there, too. You can visit the Convention Guide to see that and all the other conventions I'm aware of around the world at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/magic-convention-guide

One of the things we think makes Magifest so special is the size. It's
large enough to attract the biggest names in magic as performers, but
also its small enough that you can actually get to meet your heroes.

One of the things we think makes Magifest so special is the size. It's
large enough to attract the biggest names in magic as performers, but
also its small enough that you can actually get to meet your heroes.

In the photo above, you can see our Youth Scholars, hanging out with
Chris Ramsey. It was a highlight for them.

But it's not just in set ups like this, it's at the bar and in the
lobby. You can pull up a chair next to legends of magic and get their
advice, or just marvel at their skills. Or be sat with someone destined
to be The Next Big Thing for breakfast. So many amazing magicians join
us at Magifest and you'll get the chance to meet so many of them.

For decades, the best magicians in the world have been drawn to
Columbus, Ohio in January. Some might think it is the amazing
performers, some would argue is the perfectly-balanced schedule. Others
would argue the extra workshops are the main attraction.

We believe we all brave the weather for one reason. Because Magifest is
an incredible convention. This year, we want you to be part of it.

Join us in January

We look forward to hanging out with you in 2023.

Today, as I write this episode (18 January), my museum is already one month old. My life has changed completely during this time. I have regular opening hours and have to be at the museum four days a week. Since I don't live nearby and my house is about 30 minutes away from the city centre, the time I need to travel there and back is added to that. But I wouldn't have it any other way, and since visitors come to the museum every day it is open, I can live with that very well. In this first month, a total of 200 visitors came. Fortunately, I have an office area in the museum where I can do my work for the magazine "Magische Welt" and other correspondence.

A few days ago, the museum was now also included in the official list of Hamburg museums. So I am also represented during the "long night of museums". The long night of museums takes place in Hamburg on 22 April. It starts at 6pm and ends at midnight at 1am. There are strict conditions for this, among other things, a programme must be offered that must be varied during this long night. I have planned several lectures for this and will give a "late night show" at midnight. I am very excited about the turnout.

So much for today.

See you soon

We're already half way through January, with Christmas and the New Year celebrations a distant memory.

Very soon, the world's largest annual magic convention, produced by Blackpool Magicians Club will be taking place in the impressive Victorian Winter Gardens complex.

Housing the UK's largest theatre, the Opera House, which seats nearly 3,000, as well as several other more intimate show rooms, not to mention four dealer's rooms with over 150 magic dealers from around the globe, there really isn't another convention like it.

The line-up of talent is once again amazing, and whatever your personal magic preference might be, you won't be disappointed.

There are a number of performers making the trip from USA, including a few headliners from Las Vegas.

One of them, Mike Hammer, is making his British debut. In case you aren't familiar with his name, Mike has been headlining his own hilarious one man show at the 4 Queens Hotel & Casino, in downtown Las Vegas for 13 years.

Whilst others have come and gone with alarming regularity, Mike's hilarious show has consistently entertained thousands with his sharp comedy and original magic.

At the Blackpool Convention, Mike is presenting his full one man show and will also be emceeing the 'ONE' competition, which is an exciting new addition to the Blackpool program, with a prize for the winning act of 30,000 GB Pounds, yes, that's $40,000!

If you are attending the convention, and if comedy is your thing, or even if you just want to know how to put on a successful one man show, you won't want to miss Mike's session titled 'Comedy under the radar', which I'll be hosting.

Next week, I'll tell you about another coup for the convention, in the form of a short movie with a magic theme that has been winning all the top awards at film festivals around the world, and that is being premiered in UK at the convention.

It's writer, director and producer, is also an accomplished magic performer in his own right, and will be there at the convention, to introduce the movie and do a Q&A.

I'll tell you more next week!

The Santa Claus Illusion

Christmas was not too long ago…so it seems like a good time to talk about producing Santa Claus…by magic!

I was "The Westgate Wizard" for twenty years (1976-1996), performing magic during the Halloween season for Westgate Mall, a regional shopping center in Austin, Texas. These shows brought in lots of shoppers, so one year the mall management asked me if I could magically produce Santa.

I went through my books on illusion building, and found a few ideas, but wound up creating a fireplace out of cardboard cartons, inspired by U.F. Grant's Victory Carton Illusions. (See episode #22 of this series.)

The fireplace was covered with wood-grain Contact paper, and the chimney was covered in Contact paper that looked like bricks. We put a real fireplace grate in front of the fireplace opening. We hung stockings with the names of the mall managers on the fireplace.

On the day after Thanksgiving, the mall was crowded with shoppers. When it was time for Santa to appear, I started with a magic show.

We performed the illusion in the round, on a small stage covering up the central fountain, with families all around, some even sitting on the stage, so close they could touch the fireplace. A flickering red light showed that the inside was empty, and I lifted the chimney to show nothing concealed there.

Then Santa's Helper (my daughter in appropriate costume) appeared from inside the fireplace. We had the kids sing, "here Comes Santa Claus," there was a puff of smoke inside the chimney, and the Jolly Old Elf himself came out to greet the kids!

We also distributed "Wizard of Westgate" Christmas coloring books and sponsored a coloring contest.

Magic is so much fun!

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. Check out my free weekly podcast at:

Combining two plots can often yield interesting and strong results. Here we are going to discuss a self-working synergy of the classic Open Prediction combined with a Card At Any Number.

Preset or remember the card at nineteenth from the top of the deck. Let's say it's the Jack of Hearts. Execute any deceptive false shuffle and hand the deck to a spectator and walk and talk them through the classic Jay Ose false cut - illustrated overleaf.

"Today Samantha, I'm going to make a prediction. Some magicians write things down. Some even seal that writing in an envelope. Others even go one step further and seal their thoughts in a locked box. But I'm going to make an open prediction. A prediction of a card and right here, right now I will tell you and your friends, that my prediction is the Jack of Hearts.

Please remember that as later there is a quiz! Now I need something from you. Just a number, any number, say between ten and twenty? Sixteen it is then. You don't wish to change your mind?"

Once the number has been called - sixteen in this example - we will sleightlessly displace cards as we demonstrate what we need our spectator to do. Deal three cards face-down onto the table and casually drop the deck on top. Job done and from a method point of view the effect is over and yet from an audience point of view it hasn't even started. My kind of trick.

"Deal the cards face-up into a pile and stop at fifteen please. Now place the card at your thought of number face-down on top. Then turn the rest of the deck face-up and place that on top of everything. So at the beginning, the deck was shuffled and you gave it a few cuts. I then made an open prediction. Do you remember it? Yes that's correct, the Jack of Hearts. You thought of a number and you dealt down to that number." Ribbon spread the deck and pause a beat. Then slowly extract the facedown card at their number and turn it face-up to conclude your mystery with success. Of course if other numbers are named simply do the math and then the open displacement.

Spectator Ose Cut
Ask them to cut off a third of the deck and table it. Then have them cut off half the remaining cards and table that packet to the right of the first packet. Finally have them table their remaining cards to the right of the tabled row. A couple of seconds later have them gather up the packets from left to right. Credit to James Swain for this great idea.
