3. Max Maven Poster
--------------------------------------------
Message from Lupe Nielsen (US)
This
special poster was designed by Paul Romhany and it is the
cover of December 2022 issue of Vanish Magazine.
Paul
designed this image to commemorate the amazing life of the
late Max Maven (December 21, 1950 - November 1, 2022). Paul
was touched by Max's last words on social media, that he
created his portrait out of them.
Max's
message was: "I made my life about words, reading them
and writing them. I wish I had a more elegant way of telling
you all that I love you. I had a good run, made wonderful
friends, shared many laughs, and I learned a great many
things. I learned that magic allows us to be so much bigger
than we are. I learned we should be kind to one another
and forgive people for being flawed and prideful. The one
thing I know is that we can all do better, and I think we
will."
The
poster measures 16.5" x 20.5"
(Note: We can make larger, custom sizes of this image. Please
email us to find out the costs for another specific size.)
It is a fine giclee printed with UV Inks on CANVAS.
Cost: $80
Posters
require special packaging. These are the shipping costs
that will be charged:
Domestic shipping and handling: $10
International shipping and handling: $25

4. Wig Worn By TV Magician Paul Daniels Sold For £2,100
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by David Hartnell (MNZM)
Wig
of legendary TV magician Paul Daniels sells for a whopping
£2,100 at auction
A
wig once worn by legendary TV magician Paul Daniels sold
at auction yesterday for £2,100 - seven times the
estimated sale price.
The
hairpiece had a pre-sale estimate of just £300 but
there was a fierce bidding war to get the locks.
According
to his widow, Debbie McGee, Daniels started wearing wigs
at 30 before he even went bald so audiences would not notice
his gradual hair loss.
Debbie,
64, said: 'Magic collectors love anything and everything
belonging to famous magicians.
It seemed sad to just throw it away. Whoever purchases it
is guaranteed to have a great talking point at any gathering.'
The
hairpiece was part of her late husband's lifetime collection
of magic memorabilia, being sold at Special Auction Services
in Newbury, Berkshire.
Although
the wig had a pre-sale estimate of £300, previous
hairpieces of his have sold for three times as much.
In
2011, Daniels sold another of his wigs for £1,100.
Daniels,
who once did a show called Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow, died
in 2016, aged 77. He had an incurable brain tumour.

6. Santa's Book Giving Suggestions - The Magic Word Podcast
---------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (US)
As
we enter the gift giving season and we are thinking of others,
Santa Claus (aka Scott Wells) chats with three authors of
books that are ideal for youth. First up, Amy Kimlat tells
us about her new book, "Hocus Pocus Practice Focus"
which is geared toward 4-8 year old children but perfect
for the parent to read to their child. It inspires and encourages
children to focus their efforts and not get discouraged
when they fail. It is about a young girl who wants to learn
magic, but it can be applied to any other endeavor.
Next
we chat with Allan Kronzek about his book, "Grandpa
Magic" which is written for adults who have children
in their lives. This teaches adults some great tricks that
are easy to learn but perfect to show children when the
need arises. Finally what would a Magic Word Christmas Podcast
be like without a visit with Murray Sawchuck? He just released
his new book, "At Nighttime We Are All The Same Size"
which is a fun book for children aged 4-8 with delightful
illustrations and talks about how we are all the same size
when we lie down to sleep at night, whether a small dog
or a large giraffe.
All
of these books are available on Amazon.com which also offers
a sneak peek inside with a few pages so you know what to
expect. And speaking of that, Amy Kimlat generously offered
a "no obligation" FREE PDF download of her book
to all listeners of The Magic Word Podcast. The link is
on this week's blog so be sure to visit https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/726-santas-book-suggestions
for that link, plus you can get more content like watching
the video, seeing some photos, and more. You can listen
to this episode wherever you get your podcasts. So please
"share the Word" and let your friends know about
this podcast. After all it is the season of giving!

7. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode 12
---------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
Only
20 more days, then I will open the first German museum for
magic art, Bellachini. Next Sunday, the last art exhibition
will come to an end. At 5 p.m. it will be dismantled. That
generally doesn't take very long. Dismantling is always
quicker than building. Afterwards I will remove all the
nails from the walls and close the holes. That's always
a bit of work. The next morning, on Monday, the painters
will come and paint the walls a nice blue and the display
cases green. They have exactly 5 days to do it. Then I start
decorating.
I
have already framed most of the pictures and posters. In
total, I have four large cabinet showcases and six table
showcases that I have to fill with magic material. Of course,
I also have to label each piece to explain what you see.
In addition, there are two video stations where you can
watch magic films with headphones. One wall remains without
pictures, on which I project a large film about magic with
a beamer.
In
the meantime, I have also tackled the advertising. I was
able to win Hamburg's biggest daily newspaper as a sponsor.
It provides me with a quarter page at a very, very reasonable
price.
There will also be posters and here too I was able to negotiate
a very favorable price with the company. From 5 December,
around 400 posters will be put up in Hamburg.
You
can see the motif of the poster on the first page of the
Magic-Pedia:
http://www.zauber-pedia.de
By
the way, if you go to the museum's homepage
(https://hamburger-zaubermuseum.com)
and
then click on the "Kurator" button at the bottom,
you can see many pictures of exhibitions I have shown in
other museums since the 1980s.
In
the meantime I also have an Instagram account and I would
be happy if you could follow me there: https://www.instagram.com/belllachini/
So,
that's it for today. Next time I might be able to show pictures
of the new rooms.

8. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #88
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
First,
a bit of sad news from Las Vegas. Siegfried & Roy's
'Secret Garden' at the Mirage Hotel & Casino has now
closed permanently. I understand that the remaining animals
are being relocated to zoo's around the country.
For
over twenty years it has been a hugely popular tourist attraction,
and Siegfried & Roy both used to visit regularly, and
held several memorable events there.
It
follows the closure of the iconic volcano outside the front
of the Mirage which has wowed millions since the hotel opened
in November 1989.
The
Mirage has recently been bought by Hard Rock International,
and the volcano will soon be replaced by a giant guitar,
yet another sign of the ever changing face of the entertainment
capital of the world.
Thanksgiving
is an opportunity for reflection, and to step back and be
thankful for the many blessings we enjoy. Personally, I
am thankful for the friendships that magic has given me,
all around the world.
Over
the past 50 years I have been privileged to meet some of
the most talented magicians on the planet, and it was only
when I was looking through a box of photos that I realised
just how many of them are no longer with us. Special friends
like Peter Reveen, Hans Moretti, Johnny Paul, Johnny &
Pam Thompson, Norm Nielsen, Ken Brooke and Siegfried &
Roy to name just a few.
Life
goes by so fast that there is a danger of us forgetting
not only the great names in magic that have gone before
us, but also, and equally as importantly, the mentors, in
hundreds of local magic clubs across the globe, to whom
we owe our start in magic, for kindling our interest in
this very special art.
I
remember fondly members of the Liverpool Mahatma Magic Circle
in Liverpool, one of the oldest magic societies in the world,
who were so generous with their time and encouragement.
Without
them, my own magic journey which has taken me from Liverpool
to Las Vegas would never have happened. I'm sure every magician
who reads this article will also be able to relate, and
will have their own magic 'mentor' to be thankful for.

Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
Illusions:
A Flying Carpet!
Pulling
a coin from someone's ear is a trick; producing a rabbit
is a bigger trick. But producing an elephant is an ILLUSION!
I
have always loved Illusions. I think my first really Big
Trick was the Burling Hull Dream Levitation, a variation
on Abbott's Super X. Burling Hull's advertising was absolutely
amazing. As a teenage magician, I wanted everything he sold!
I
was in high school when I bought the plans, and took a portion
of them to a local metal worker in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
where I lived with my family. I told the metal worker that
it was a special holder for my workshop, not wanting him
to know that it was a magician's secret.
Technically, the "Dream Levitation" is merely
a suspension. In other words, the girl is suspended without
any apparent means of support, but does not rise into the
air. My mom made a purple satin drape with gold fringe to
cover the board where the girl lay, making it sort of a
Magic Flying Carpet.
My
brother Carter made two dragon tables that supposedly held
up the carpet before they were pulled away to reveal the
miracle. I then passed a Hula Hoop over her, to prove that
there were no wires, mirrors, or other secret devices.
Sometimes
when performing I would hear the audience gasp, and it was
all I could do to keep from grinning. If they only knew
the simple secret!
Despite
its simplicity, the effect dazzled audiences. And it made
for some great publicity photos! One of my favorite photos
is a picture of my floating Judy, my younger sister, on
the beach in front of the Gulf of Mexico. It looks like
trick photography!

10. Colour Me In! - John Carey #181
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
The
following approach to the classic colour changing deck was
inspired by Paul Wilson's version, called The Odd Card,
from the Unreal Sessions videos. I really liked Paul's version,
but being the tinkerer I am I played around with some variants.
As with Paul's handling, there is
no over-proving or stating the obvious with my variation.
You also hide the dirt at the end in full view!
Method:
You
will require a rainbow deck, two blue backed Jokers and
one other blue backed card. Place the odd blue card on top
of the deck, place the Jokers in different parts of the
deck, and place everything inside a blue card box.
Bring
out the deck and remove from the box. Casually place the
box aside. Tip the deck up on its side and execute a face-up
slip shuffle, retaining your odd blue card on top. Square
up tilting the deck up slightly to flash blue, without over-proving.
State that you are going to play a game with
your helper and that you have hidden an odd card in the
deck. Mention that it isn't one of the Jokers, as you spread
the cards in hand face-up and strip out the two Jokers,
again flashing blue as you pocket them. The next sequence
is illustrated overleaf: Up-jog three random face-up
cards (1). Take them out, adding the blue card underneath
with a breakless strip-out addition. To do that, your left
hand simply presses up against the rear card of the deck
(2) and drags it underneath (3) as you strip out the three
up-jogged cards (4).Turn that packet face-down and place
it side jogged on the face-up deck. Then flip the packet
face-up onto the deck.
Deal
off a row of 3 face-up cards and then take off the face
card of the deck and use it as a pointer, as you ask them
to make their choice. This again flashes a blue back. Place
that blue card back on the face and casually cut the deck
and complete. Ask your helper which one is the odd one?
Allow her to think and point to the odd valued card. State
that sometimes things get even odder... Turn over the card
indicated to reveal an odd backed card. A moment later ask
her to turn over the other two cards to display a mix of
colours. Ask everyone in the audience to think of a colour.
Make a magical gesture over the deck and then turn it face-up.
Make a half moon ribbon spread across the table to conclude
with a rainbow of colours!

Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
In
the classic book, "Our Magic", Neville Maskelyne
describes the unique process of creativity and originality
required to raise the craft of magic to the "High Art
of Magic." Anyone can copy another, and that's how
most begin, just as a beginner at piano starts with "Chopsticks".
In
Magic, we begin with the foundations of Sleight-of-Hand
and Conjuring, just as the pianist learns Scales and Chords.
Performing Classic magic effects is like playing traditional
music. Once a solid foundation of skill and knowledge is
established, the real journey of the Artist begins.
As
Maskelyne says, even a perfect copy of the Mona Lisa will
always be just a copy. This is what he refers to as "Low
Art". Many are content to remain at that level, as
we see with most musicians and magicians. The real challenge
is creating an effect that is original, in style and performance.
But it's not just about originality either. One might randomly
string notes and words together to compose an original song,
but that doesn't mean it will be pleasing to the ear.
So
what's the secret that raises the craft to High Art? Ultimately,
all Art is a unique expression of creativity. So, what is
it that you can do better than anyone else? Being you, of
course! As I tell my students, you don't become an Artist
until you lose the fear of being yourself. Lose the fear,
find yourself, release the inner Artist. The secret ingredient
is you.
