4. David Ginn On The Magic Word Podcast
---------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (US)
David Ginn is the author of over 100 books on children's
show magic making him (in my opinion) the King of the Kid's
Shows. He has reigned for decades and continually reinventing
himself by getting "out there" with DVD's, lectures
and magazine articles. He is currently the author of "Magic
and Memories" that appear monthly in The Linking Ring
journal. This week David talks on the Magic Word Podcast
about some of his memories and associations with people
like J.B. Bobo and Doug Henning. This is a fun and another
enlightening podcast that you can download and listen to
through your favorite streaming method.
But for more information, watch videos, see photos, and
read the blog, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/725-david-ginn
On Monday November 21 you can tune in to hear Scott Wells
spotlighted on Jeff McBride's online Magic & Mystery
School. Come celebrate Scott's birthday with other online
students by visiting http://mcbridemagic.tv
There will not be a podcast released next week on Thursday
November 24 because we will be celebrating Thanksgiving
in the U.S. and we are leaving that day open for you to
spend time with your friends and family giving thanks for
your many blessings. If you need your "fix" of
listening to the podcast, then please dig into the archives
and listen to one you haven't heard before, or perhaps want
to hear for the first time! Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

5. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode No.11
-------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)
The opening of the museum is getting closer still about
30 days. My problem is the time. Because until November
27 the rooms are still an art gallery, after that they will
be remodeled immediately. The painter has 6 days to paint
the walls and the bases of the showcases, I then have only
two weeks left to set up. I have already had the catalog
printed. It is very nice with many illustrations. A total
of 80 pages.
I am especially happy about a welcome from the new FISM
president Andrea Baioni, which he wrote for me for the catalog.
Otherwise, unfortunately, I have not received any support
from the city of Hamburg. I wrote to the Senator for Culture
already in July and asked for a foreword. I had also invited
him to the opening, of course. But after almost two months
the short answer came: no time.
Instead, a newspaper from my old homeland, where I went
to school, was interested in writing about the Magic Museum
project.
Of course, it is very difficult to attract attention in
the big city of Hamburg and magic as a subject is unfortunately
still not as "important" as other arts. Apart
from that, there are 86 museums or similar institutions
in Hamburg. Starting with the big art museums and ending
with the doll museum. I have to make a big effort to be
seen with my museum.
So, whenever you come to Hamburg, please visit my museum.
It is located directly behind the main station, so really
only a few yards.
Stay curious for the next episode ;-), there I will write
some more about the exhibits.

6. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #86
-------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)
This week I'm writing the article in my home city of Liverpool.
I'm overlooking the superbly redeveloped waterside area
of the Albert Dock, which has become one of the England's
most popular tourist destinations.
I travelled back to the UK last week to lecture at a brand
new convention, 'The Wizards Weekend', produced by well-known
North East magician, Chris Cross.
Advertised as 'an exclusive & intimate magical winter
weekender' which included star lectures, grand gala show,
masterclasses, special guests and dealers, it promised to
be an exciting few days of magic.
And with a very strong line-up of talent that included
Franz Harary, John Archer, Noel Britten, Laura London, Billy
Kidd, Marc Oberon and Chris Cross himself, those attending
more than got their monies worth.
The only disappointing part of the event was the lack of
support that Chris received. Unfortunately, the numbers
attending were very low, which was a great shame.
However, those that did show up were treated to several
really good lectures and workshops, and enormous must credit
go to the presenters who didn't allow the small audiences
to affect their sessions. They were all excellent.
I particularly enjoyed two talks, one by John Archer on
'Comedy Writing' and the other by Noel Britten on 'Performance'.
There was much top class magic to marvel at over the weekend,
but to hear these two highly experienced performers share
their knowledge about a couple of vitally important, and
often overlooked, aspects of the entertainment business,
especially by magicians, was extremely inspiring and highly
valuable. Those talks alone were worth the price of admission.
I'm not going to do a report on all the sessions, but I
have to say that I was impressed that Franz Harary had flown
in from USA specially for the convention. Franz showed a
couple of videos featuring many of the shows and projects
he has created and produced in the Far East, and they were
quite simply breathtaking. The scale of the projects is
incredible and what he has achieved is genuinely amazing.
And, in spite of all his success, with less than one hour's
rehearsal, he happily performed, with Chris's better half,
a less than stable Zig Zag illusion that Chris had provided!
He sailed through it as only a pro can do!
I believe that Chris is planning on doing it all again
next year, he's a brave man. Hopefully he'll get more support.
He deserves it. It was a fun weekend.

Message by Kent Cummins, Director (US)
The Kent Cummins Magic Camp
Last week I explained why I needed to personally brand
Magic Camp. In addition to adding my name to the logo, I
started the process to make the camp a non-profit public
charity, known as a 501c3 organization according to the
tax code.
It took a lot of time and a lot of help, but we succeeded
in changing the official status of the camp. I thought it
made sense to become a non-profit, since the purpose of
the camp was to help kids, not to make me rich and/or famous.
We were learning a lot about how to help kids with different
labels, different "special needs".
And we were successful! I served on the board of DSACT,
the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas, and we became
certified by MHMR, Mental Health and Mental Retardation.
We were active with several other organizations that helped
kids with special needs, and partnered with both the Austin
Independent School District and various private schools.
But the non-profit status didn't seem to help us get funding.
We received assistance from the Bubel-Aiken Foundation,
but they did not require non-profit status. And the organizations
that provided grants didn't seem to understand that "Magic
Camp" was more than just fun.
I ran the camp for eighteen years, but when your kids turn
18, it is time to let them go. I sold the camp supplies
and website to a small group of people who were already
working with the camp, and it continues today
although
not officially as a non-profit.
I took my name off the logo when I sold the camp, and they
changed the name to FANTASTIC Magic Camp, to honor The FANTASTIC
Kent Cummins who started the camp.
The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and
sharing the art of magic. Check out my free weekly podcast

8. Dummy Run...- John Carey #180
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
In Jim Swain's book 21st Century Card Magic is a delightful
swindle called the Dummy Force. Relying on keeping the spectator's
mind busy and shifting the focus or time misdirection, it's
a beautiful little card force. I've been using it lately
for a nice Do-As-I-Do with two different
colored decks.
Place the Jack of Hearts on top of each deck prior to performance
and you are good to go. Bring out both decks and offer your
spectator the free choice of either. Invite them to shuffle
their deck as you riffle shuffle your deck a couple of times
retaining the force card on top. Swap decks with
your helper, each deck being tabled. Now for the fun part,
the Dummy Force. Mention to your helper that together you
will both work in sync and play a little game called Do-As-I-Do.
Ask them to cut off about half the deck and set it aside.
You carry out this action too. Pointing at the lower half
of their deck you casually ask them roughly how many cards
they think are there? This seemingly innocent question forces
them to look at that packet and think. Ask them to pick
up this packet and shuffle it. Then ask them to cut off
some cards and table them. You carry out the exact same
actions with your cards. Point to the original top card
of their deck - the force card - and ask them to take it
and remember it and then drop it on top of the other tabled
packet.
You once again copy their actions. Both of you then drop
your cards on top of the other tabled packets. Ask them
to shuffle that packet and then place it on top of their
remaining cards and finally shuffle their deck. Once again,
as you give these instructions you carry out the same actions
with your cards. "So each of us shuffled our decks,
took out a random card, lost it and then shuffled once more.
It doesn't get much fairer. Please take out the card you
are thinking of and I will take out mine." To finish
you simply remove the Jack of Hearts from your deck. They
of course will do the same. The two cards are turned over
simultaneously and a perfect match is discovered.
Notes:
As Mr Swain points out, if you ask a laymen to perform
a task during a trick, they will concentrate on this task
and forget the task that took place before it.

9. News From The Academy Of Illusions
---------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)
It's hard to believe that we are winding up 2022 already.
From a run of Halloween shows, we are moving right into
the Holidays and preparing our Christmas shows. One of my
top students, Sharon Dale, from Trinidad, had the idea for
a routine based upon Andy Williams' song, "It's the
Most Wonderful Time of the Year".
So, our 50th, 90 minute, Zoom Session last week was focused
on structuring the sequence of effects, to suit the spirit,
and timing, of this well-loved Carol. It is this process
of creative brainstorming that I find most rewarding about
teaching. Anyone can learn from a book or DVD, but that
is usually just by rote. It's a whole different thing to
take an original concept and watch it blossom into a full
blown routine.
My curriculum may vary from student to student, but the
basic principle of building a solid foundation of sleight-of-hand
skills is a constant. Sharon has shown a relentless commitment
to Excellence in Artistry. As such, we are now able to create
quickly and efficiently, structuring a complex routine one
week and having it ready to perform the next. In this regard,
Sharon is proof of concept that Magic can now be taught,
and mastered, from any distance. As Paul Simon said, "This
is the age of miracles and wonders."
In tomorrow's Session, we will fine-tune the effects sequence,
record the music, with sound effects, and it will premiere
this weekend. In this regard, the creative process, from
conception to completion, is Magic. We are not only creating
something from nothing, but something that's never been
done before. This is right in line with what Maskelyne so
aptly called, "The High Art of Magic". And it
never happens by accident.
