Max Maven Death, American Magician Max Maven has passed away

Max Maven Obituary, Death - Max Maven was born Philip Goldstein on December 21, 1950 in the United States. His performances were regarded as being smart and intelligent. He was recognized by Magic Magazine as one of the 100 "Most Prominent Magicians of the 20th Century" and is widely regarded as one of the greatest mentalists of all time. On magic shows on television, he typically performs "interactive" mind-reading feats. Although he has been to Rome, Maven was primarily raised in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was born.

He began his career as a performer in nightclubs, including Boston's legendary Playboy Club. He had previously been a Boston radio DJ. He was not only a gifted writer but also created several magical and mentalist effects that have since been employed by other magicians. His magic consulting skills have benefited entertainers including Doug Henning, Siegfried & Roy, Penn & Teller, and David Copperfield. He also frequently contributes to trade publications including Genii, The Linking Ring, and M-U-M.

Over the years, he has appeared on the covers of more than 30 of these publications, including The Linking Ring, Genii in 1983 (alongside Japanese magician Shigeo Takagi), as well as in 2007 and 2018; and Penguin Magic Monthly in 2019. Additionally, he has given featured performances at the annual conferences of both the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians.

Despite having his name officially changed to Max Maven, he continues to write technical papers under the alias "Phil Goldstein." Maven was regarded as a legend in the magic community due to his extensive knowledge of the invention of numerous illusions and techniques as well as the history of magic. He has emphasized that it is crucial to protect art history and acknowledge those who created ideas.

Although he doesn't consider himself a comic, Max Maven spent a significant portion of the 1980s appearing and hosting in comedy clubs all across the nation. In 1988, the Beverly Hills Playhouse hosted his one-man show Thinking in Person for two months. Twenty years later, in 2008, a larger-than-life version of the play debuted. Later, in 2012, the play was performed at the Off-Broadway Abingdon Theatre Arts Complex.

On several television shows, such as "Magic," "The Art of Magic," and "The MAXIMUM Dimension," he periodically appeared as a magician role (often playing himself). He has been on television in Chile, England, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Taiwan, Sweden, Norway, and Finland.
The traveling scientific exhibits "Magic: The Scientific of Illusion" and "Magic of the Mind Illusion," which have visited science museums in locations like Boston and Los Angeles, feature Maven. He routinely performs in Japan and speaks the language well. He frequently speaks about creativity and innovation at the EG Conference.

In Count DeClues' Mystery Castle, a 1992 Halloween special on FOX, he played the title role. On The World's Greatest Magic, NBC's highest-rated program of 1994, he performed his interactive magic. He was the host of the Israeli television show Mi Yapil Et Ha Master ("Who Can Fool The Master?"), which was modeled off Penn & Teller: Fool Us. He also served as a judge on a number of Celebracadabra episodes in 2008.

He appeared in a number of sitcoms and TV dramas, including "The Great Mentos" in the 1995 episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air called "Save the Last Trance for Me," "Drive, She Said" in the episode of Mork & Mindy from 1982, and episodes of General Hospital and Top Chef. In addition to being featured in the 2019 documentary The Amazing Jonathan, directed by Ben Berman, he was also interviewed by the Los Angeles Times regarding recent happenings at The Magic Castle.

4. Helen Coghlan Fooled Penn And Teller Fifth Time
--------------------------------------------
Message by Helen Coghlan (Australia)

Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of congratulations on my latest Penn and Teller: Fool Us appearance which has just gone to air in the US. I'm really proud to have fooled the boys for the fifth time (the first person to do so).

Of course Dad (Arthur Coghlan) is the brains behind all my successes on the show and, once again, I performed a couple of his inventions. Thanks to Connie Boyd, here's the YouTube clip: https://youtu.be/wJLmQJH5XR0

On Penn and Teller's recent Australian tour they visited us at home where we shared the secrets with them.

Earlier this year, the ABC program Australian Story did an episode featuring Dad. It was a great production and, if you'd like to see it, here is the link: https://youtu.be/K0vFUEY1FuM

5. David Blaine Show, Titled "In Spades"
---------------------------------------------
Message by Lupe Nielsen (US)

Last night, my friend Ray Lum and I, went to see the David Blaine Show, titled "In Spades", at the new Resorts World here in Las Vegas.

The show was truly a remarkable experience. For two hours (including a fifteen minute intermission). David kept us on the edge of our seats, presenting some very clever material. Yes, he did some magic classics: Like the card in mouth, or finding a bill in an impossible location. But each piece was "Blaine-fied" for his show. Who else would perform a card to mouth while your lips were sewn shut with a needle and thread by two audience members?

Who else would make a vanished ring reappear, by swallowing a coat hanger, inserting it into the stomach and pulling the ring out with it?

No one can do what David Blaine did last night.

He opened his show with an impressive version of Vertigo, and held his breath underwater for ten minutes on the second part of the show. The man is not human.

But what in my opinion made the show even more remarkable, was David Blaine himself. He was instantly likable the moment he walked on stage. There was not a single hint of showoff, arrogance or pretentiousness on that man. He does have a mysterious charisma about him, though, and never takes anything for granted. He takes his time with the magic, and never rushes the effects. He also listens and cares about his audience. When he asks the spectators for their name, he truly listens, remembers and empathizes with them.

Through David Blaine, for the first time ever, I understood Houdini. Nowadays in 2022, in spite of all the noise, social media, information overload, cynicism and short attention span, David Blaine, went into a water tank and held his breath for TEN minutes. The audience just sat there, mesmerized… (Perhaps what was most impressive was that short-attention-spanned 2022 audiences could hold their attention for more than five seconds!) Ten minutes… Just watching someone hold their breath… It was incredible…

Now I finally understand why Harry Houdini was so special… imagine audiences at the turn of the 20th century (where there were not as many distractions) watching a stunt man and escape artist like Houdini. I didn't know how powerful it can be to watch someone like David Blaine hold their breath for such a long time.

Due to the physical nature of the show, David Blaine only performs his show TWICE a MONTH. From my understanding, he has a two year contract. I would be amazed if he can endure the entire run, as he does risk his life with every performance he does.

If you have the opportunity, do go and see this show. It is a special experience, that will never be seen, duplicated or imitated ever again.

7. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode No.9
-------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

What do I show in a museum dedicated to the art of magic? For me, this is the first and most difficult question to answer. The word museum, from its origin, describes a collection of cultural goods and it is a permanent institution at the service of society that researches, collects, preserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. And, of course, the museum is meant to be public.
For me, this definition does not mean that I simply show everything I have in a room. I want to explain the art of magic in a certain way with the exhibits. In other words, to show where the art of magic comes from and how it has developed. Visitors to the museum should learn that the art of magic is just as important a cultural asset as painting, theatre and all other performing arts. It is therefore important to find a structure for the museum.

The main focus will be on my magic boxes, whose history can be traced back to the early 19th century. Magic boxes played an important role in spreading the art of magic more widely, because the boxes brought magic into people's living rooms. Furthermore, they show the development not only of magic, but also of the arts involved, such as bookbinders, painters, graphic artists and craftsmen.

Among my oldest magic boxes are some exhibits from the 19th century, dated around 1840 to 1880.

At the opening, however, I will be able to present a very special magic box. It is not in my possession, but I am receiving it on loan. The box dates back to 1830 and was procured by the famous German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Goethe was an admirer of the art of magic and gave this magic box to his grandchildren for Christmas. Today the box belongs to the Goethe Museum in Düsseldorf and after many weeks I managed to get this box on loan for a few months. In my Magic-Pedia you can see this Goethe magic box:

8. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #84

Message by Paul Stone (US)

The last week has been an usually busy one for me, with a different event to attend seemingly every day.

I was invited to a preview of the new AWAKENING Show at the Wynn Hotel & Casino here on the Las Vegas Strip. This highly anticipated show is replacing the long running Le Reve Show.

As this was the very first preview with an audience, and the official opening night isn't for a couple of weeks on November 7th, it wouldn't be fair to or accurate to write a detailed report until the show has properly bedded in.

What I will say is that the lighting and staging is incredible, and that you could only see a show of this calibre and scale in Las Vegas. And any show that has Sir Anthony Hopkins as the narrator is going to be top drawer. And there are several magic illusions in the show courtesy of the creative genius that is Paul Kieve. But more about this in a few weeks time!

I mentioned last week about a special fundraising event in aid of the Las Vegas Neon Museum being held at Siegfried & Roy's original home, the Jungle Palace.

It was an unforgettable evening, and brought back many memories of some wonderful and magical occasions spent with Siegfried & Roy at this special venue. Elaine Wynn, owner of the Encore Hotel & Casino, introduced the 'Evil Queen' herself, Lynette Chappell, who welcomed everybody and told a few stories about some of the amazing times she shared at the Jungle Palace with the 'Masters of the Impossible'.

The 200 VIP guests were able to explore this spectacular house and gardens and see it in all its splendour for possibly the last time.

The house sits on six lots and so sadly it will probably be sold to a developer. In my opinion, and that of many others, this iconic property should be protected and maybe even turned into a museum. Unfortunately, as it is located in a residential area, this may not be easy to accomplish, but in the words of Siegfried, 'nothing is impossible'!

A couple of days ago, I received a message and video clip from my good friend and the Italian 'Maestro' himself, SILVAN, about a big magic show taking place at the largest theatre in Rome from 16th - 20th November, in which he is the 'Guest Star'. At 86 years of age, he is still as impressive as ever… fantastico!

This weekend I am attending a movie premiere at the Magic Castle in Hollywood. The movie is the brain child of, and directed by, Dave Baram, who amongst his other credits is Criss Angel's personal manager. Dave has a hugely impressive CV, which includes also managing the careers of several major movie stars, amongst them Leonardo Di Caprio.

And he is also a talented magic performer in his own right, currently appearing in a sold out intimate 'Modern Parlor Show' at the Millenium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles as his alter ego, David Carlo.

The Halloween Horror Hop!

Did you do anything interesting for Halloween this year? Back in the late fifties and early sixties, my friend John Schexnaydre and I put on a series of Spook Shows in conjunction with record hops, sponsored by WLCS, a local radio station. We called the first one a "Halloween Horror Hop," and it was so successful that we just called them, "Horror Hops," and kept producing them while we were students at Baton Rouge High School.

Unlike the Midnight Ghost Shows which appeared at movie theatres, we did not partner with a horror movie. Today it would be easy to project a movie on any blank wall, but this was before videotapes, and long before computers streaming movies.

A record hop typically ran for a few hours as a special radio station promotion, and kids came to listen to the music, meet the Disk Jockey, win prizes…and maybe even dance a little bit. It was also a place for young guys and girls to meet. They were often held in local recreation centers, and usually cost 25 cents to get in.

We added a magic show to the mix, but we did make the magic show well-themed, so it was truly a magical Spook Show. I used my Victory Carton Illusions book to make a Haunted House out of a refrigerator carton, and I had purchased a bunch of masks from my favorite magic store.
Our prize attraction was a pair of luminous, jointed plywood skeletons which I had purchased from a retired vaudeville magician for the blackout. One of our close friends had a recording studio, so we had a great soundtrack with music and screaming during the blackout.
It was SPOOK-tacular! Spec-DRACULA! Truly TERROR-ific!

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. Check out my free weekly podcast at:

10. ESP Do As I Do - John Carey #178
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

I've grown quite fond of effects with ESP cards lately, providing they don't drag on forever. The following do as I do piece fits the bill as a strong interactive piece that's short and sweet.

You will require two sets of the five standard symbols, comprising of circle, cross, wavy lines, square and star. Bring out the cards and display the faces as you make your opening monologue. Hand one set of five cards to a spectator and retain the other. Both of you then freely shuffle your
packets a few times as you talk about an experiment in thoughts and replication of actions.

Ask your helper to take a peek at the bottom card of their packet and to put the thought of that symbol into their mind. You supposedly do the same with your packet, but in fact just ignore what you see. Now we will walk and talk the spectator through a quick, simple down/under mix. Deal your top card face-down and have them do the same. Then take the next card and place it under the packet as once more they copy you. Continue the down/under deal with your helper, you both dropping the last card of each packet on top. This secretly sets the symbol they are thinking of to third from top.

Swap packets as you comment on how both of you are merely thinking of a symbol. Ask them to shuffle their packet. You simply reverse the order of your packet with an overhand shuffle and then repeat this, retaining their card third from top. "Please take out the symbol you are thinking of and I will do the same." Build the effect up and then turn both cards up to reveal a perfect match.

13. News From The Academy Of Illusions
---------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

In November 1978, a few months after I started working at Hollywood Magic, a rather odd looking gentleman walked into the store. Introducing himself as Phil, he had just moved to LA from Boston. That wasn't unusual, as many of us were drawn, from across the country, to this Mecca of Magic. He quickly became one of the 'regulars', coming in daily and hanging out for an hour or more.

Phil was quite knowledgeable in Magic, skilled in Mentalism and had a penchant for Packet Tricks. In fact, almost every time he came in, he eagerly showed off his latest moves and routines. Soon, he connected with T. A. Waters, who was also a 'regular'. I struck up a friendship with both of them and enjoyed many long, insightful conversations. Soon, he was selling his books and effects at the store.

About the time I started performing at The Castle, his star was also rising. Being equally adept at Close-up as well as Stage, he was able to perform in all three main Showrooms. In fact, the first show we did together was in The Palace of Mystery. A few months later, we performed at the PCAM Convention at LA's famous Bonaventure Hotel. The Gala Show was filmed by NHK TV, and then broadcast to millions of viewers across Japan. This helped launch both of our international careers and, specifically, opened up the Japanese Market, which he was able to parlay into a lifetime of stardom there.

Over the ensuing years, we met, time and again, somewhere in the world, at Conventions in the US, Italy, Canada, England, Holland, France and even Hong Kong. Almost 20 years later, we were both headliners on the 1997 FISM in Dresden. The following year, we were both performing and lecturing at 4F. By then, he had gained international acclaim as a performer, author and creator. And besides the bond of friendship, we always held a mutual respect for each other.

The man I'm speaking of is, of course, the one and only Max Maven. Sadly, a few years ago, his health took a turn for the worse. And just yesterday, he embarked upon that greatest adventure, to the Magic Castle in the sky. Upon hearing of his passing, I am flooded with memories, from countless card tricks to International Galas, from late night talks at Hollywood coffee shops to packed house lectures, somewhere in the world. Max was truly one-of-a-kind, and has left an indelible impression on the Art.

One of the blessings of having a photographic memory is that I can still see him, sitting on the barstool at Hollywood Magic, showing his latest card miracle. And if we didn't give a reaction that he felt was appropriate to the effect, he would exclaim, indignantly, "What? Only me and God can do that!" I laughed then, as I laugh now. So, as Bill Larsen would say, Aloha dear friend. It was a pleasure, and an honor, to share this adventure with you.
