4. Kenton Knepper On The Magic Word Podcast
---------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells (USA)

When attending the recent Poe's Magic Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, one of the presenters who also sat down with me to record a podcast episode was the creator of Wonder Words, Kenton Knepper. He is a deep thinker and knows how to present his principles in plain terms. In fact, he just released "Kenton's Principles" as his most recent book. With about 20 or so of his books already in print, this is the largest and most complete of all his publications. This week on The Magic Word Podcast we talk about how he developed his Wonder Words and exactly what that term means and its relevance in magic and in our world, in general, today.

You can listen to the episode wherever you get your podcasts; however, for videos, photos, the blog and to listen online, please visit the website at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/718-kenton-knepper

If you would like to help our podcast grow and reach more listeners, then please help us out with a five star rating and nice comment on whatever platform you use to listen to your podcasts. I would sincerely appreciate it.

5. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode No.6
-------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

We have now covered the four most important magicians who bore the name Bellachini. All of them have in common that they performed in front of crowned heads and the all were very successful.

But we are still missing one fellow magician who not only called himself Bellachini, but also added a second name that embodied a certain magical tradition.

This was Richard Heufel from Leipzig (November 13, 1873 - April 3, 1953). He called himself Cagliostro Bellachini. Those who are familiar with the history of magic know that Cagliostro was also a famous magician (June 8, 1743 - August 26, 1795). However, he was also a charlatan.

I was able to add several posters of Richard Heufel - pronounced Cagliostro Bellachini - to my collection thanks to a kind fellow magician, Hans-Werner Bäumer.

http://www.zauber-pedia.de/index.php?title=Richard_Heufel
Richard Heufel showed especially many spiritualistic experiments. In total, he had over 150 different tricks, which he even listed all by name in his program sheet. From these tricks he put together different programs.

Impressive for me is the fact that Heufel took great care not to present his experiments as supernatural phenomena. He had such a notice printed directly on his posters.

Heufel was especially well known in the Netherlands. By the way, as far as I could find out, he is the only Bellachini who also performed in Hamburg (1909). My hometown since 2005 and the location of the upcoming Zaubermuseuem, which will also bear the name Bellachini. But more about that in the next episode.

Thank you for your interest.

6. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #81

Message by Paul Stone (US)

In a world where we constantly hear news of businesses and theatres closing down due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic, pending recession and the war in Ukraine, I'm happy to report two new shows opening in Las Vegas.

One of them has now actually already opened, the much anticipated 'David Blaine Live' Show at Resorts World Hotel & Casino. The show which plays only on weekends is outstanding.

This show was always going to offer something very different from the existing magic fare, currently there are I believe eighteen other magic shows in Vegas, and it doesn't disappoint.

I'm not going to spoil it for you by describing the show, but one thing that I can tell you is that you won't see another show like it.

The other new show is due to open at the beginning of November. This is a multi-million dollar production at the Wynn Hotel & Casino, and replaces the long running 'Le Reve'. It's titled 'Awakening' and has taken over three years to bring it to fruition.

The producers, who include Siegfried & Roy's former personal manager, Bernie Yuman, have kept the details close to their chests, and only this last week announced the show's name.

Whilst very little has been leaked about the show, it is apparently not a magic show as such, but does include several magical effects, courtesy of Paul Kieve, who has been working on this project for many months.

From the short promo just released, it has the appearance of a Cirque du Soleil Show but with even more spectacular costumes, and lighting effects. One thing is for sure, a production of this magnitude could only happen in Las Vegas, which remains the entertainment capital of the world.

When I was in London a few weeks ago, I had a few hours to kill, and so I decided to walk around the West End where I spent several years.

I wandered through Soho, and past 145 Wardour Street, where Ken Brooke's Magic Studio was located, which brought back so many memories of magical times spent in the company of Ken, Fred Kaps, Gaetan Bloom, Finn Jon, and Silvan to name but a few.

And round the corner in Brewer Street was the home of Harry Stanley's Unique Magic Studio, whose catalogue featured several of Bob Swadling's brilliant creations. Bob has been based in Florida for a number of years and is still very active in magic.

Harry Stanley was a magical entrepreneur, and was instrumental in launching the career of one of England's greatest magicians, Johnny Hart.

I had time to take in a matinee show and, on the advice of an old friend, Roger Bunnage, I went to see 'Life of Pi' at Wyndham's Theatre. I had seen and enjoyed the movie, but I wasn't sure how it would translate to the stage.

I needn't have worried, they did a superb job. The lead actor was excellent, but for me the stand out performer was the puppeteer who manipulated the model version of the tiger until you began to genuinely believe it was alive. It was fantastic.

And the lighting and staging effects were out of this world. The way that the stage almost instantly transformed into a raging sea with a rowing boat fighting to stay afloat was magical.

The skill of these lighting directors never cease to amaze me. If you get a chance to see this show, don't miss it, but make sure you sit upstairs to fully appreciate the special effects!

Midnight Ghost Shows!

There were still some Midnight Ghost Shows in movie theatres when I was a teenage magician in the 1950s. They were typically scheduled late at night, after the normal movie times. My memory is that the "Ghost Shows" perhaps ended near midnight.

First was an old horror movie, possibly starring Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, or Vincent price…but more likely starring nobody that anybody had ever heard of. Then there was the highly-advertised Spook Show, "Live on Stage and In Person!"

But most of the live and in person stage shows that I saw were just magic shows, with a few of the tricks vaguely adapted to the theme. (I was usually disappointed in how little "spook" there actually was in the Spook Show.) For example, advertising would often tout "Materialization of Marilyn Monroe" or some other exotic star. It would be a trick where a large photo of the star appeared in a frame.

"There are so many appropriately spooky magic tricks," I would think to myself. "Why is the magician performing Hippity Hop Rabbits?"

After the magic act, there would be a short blackout, with all of the lights going out, during which GHOSTS AND MONSTERS ROAMED THROUGH THE AUDIENCE!

Well, maybe in teen couples' imaginations! At best, there might be a luminous something, screams in a soundtrack, and perhaps a hidden assistant running up the aisle in the dark with a rod that had strings hanging from it to brush against some of the audience members.

Most of the scary stuff in the dark happened because the teenage boys wanted the girls to snuggle up for protection!

I will have more stories about ghost shows next week. After all, it is getting close to HALLOWEEN!

9. Fortune teller - John Carey #175
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

Working with cards as much as I do, I often get asked if I can read people's fortunes? This is one piece I put together to deal with that situation.

From a shuffled deck in use casually make a row of three face-down packets consisting of eight cards each. I just spread off and drop three, three and two silently. Set the balance of the deck aside.

Ask a spectator to mix each packet and then return them to the tabled row. Then ask them to pick up any of the three packets and to cut away a portion. Request they look at the bottom card of that packet and then drop that section on top of either of the two tabled packets. Then ask them
to drop the other tabled packet on top of that. Finally have them drop the cards they are left holding on top of all and square up. The above is the brilliant free cut principle, invented by John Hamilton and explored and popularized by Gene Finell. The selection is automatically set to 16th from the top, believe it or not. Give the packet a false cut and then table it.

"In answer to your earlier question about telling fortunes, let's put the cards to work as we explore your past, the present and the future." After this little monologue I pick up the packet from the table by sliding it towards me. I leave the bottom card of the packet on the table, as if by accident and then pick it up and casually bury it into the top half of the packet. This great
displacement ruse belongs to Dean Dill. Their mental selection is now exactly where it needs to be for the fortune telling revelation that follows.

"Firstly let's deal with your past. In fact let's see what the cards tell me as I deal and spell one card for each letter, PAST." Deal and spell the word past into a face-down packet to your left. Then ask the spectator to turn over the top card of that packet. Comment on that card and give a light cold reading, without trying to get too deep.

"Now let's deal with the present." Carry out the deal and spell procedure as before, dealing and spelling the word present into a face-down packet to the right of the first packet. Have the top card of that packet turned face John up and segue into a cold reading about the present, maybe stating that things aren't too bad for them personally and professionally and they are generally in a good place. Again though, don't get too deep.

"Finally we have the future to contend with." Carry out the same deal and spell procedure as before, dealing and spelling one card for each letter of the word future into a face-down packet furthest to the right of the tabled row of packets. "To be honest, nobody knows what the future holds, but it's sure to be full of surprises. Talking of which, what card are you thinking of?" They name their card and you slowly and dramatically turn the top card of the future packet face-up to reveal their card and successfully finish this tale of fortune.

10. News From The Academy Of Illusions
---------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

We have cruised into our second year with a dozen regular students from around the globe. Most have attended up to 60 private Sessions, while a few are just beginning. Many have also attended the ZoomStorming Masterclasses. Each magician is at a different stage of development, with different goals. The common denominator is always the relentless pursuit of excellence.

To that end, I have ramped up the business side of the Academy's Services. Business as in Show Business. Half of the challenge of attaining, and maintaining, a career as a working pro is having a solid handle on the promotion side. This includes a top notch website and publicity materials. In today's market, this is as essential as having peak performance sleight-of-hand skills.

I've been creating websites, graphics, video and audio for over 25 years. It's also been a service that I've done for others. In the last few months, the demand for these has increased dramatically, from students and professional colleagues. The first trick, as a web developer, is staying on the crest of the ever rolling tech wave. What was 'state-of-the-art, 5 years ago, is outdated today. The second is having a working knowledge of graphics and video and a keen eye for contemporary design. One also must understand that we are in the age of the "TikTok Attention Span". As such, a website has to grab their attention and sell you in less than 60 seconds. As a working pro, I understand all of this.

In just the last six weeks, I've created eight new websites, with the latest bells & whistles. By popular demand, I've also set up a Website to Showcase our Multimedia Services. As with everything that the Academy offers, the fees are very reasonable. Please visit: www.JSBWiz.com for more info.
