Message by Scott Wells (USA)

This week we go back in time a bit to earlier this summer at the I.B.M. International convention in Atlanta, Georgia, where we chatted with multiple-winner of many contests, Erik Tait. He was performing and competing as often as he could and anywhere he could so as to practice for the "big show," the International Championships of Magic, F.I.S.M. in Quebec. And guess what? It paid off! Erik took third place in the world for Card Magic! Listen this week as Erik talks about his road to Quebec.

Erik is also the "voice of Penguin Magic" on Penguin Podcast. So we chat, podcaster to podcaster about things that will interest you, too. We also chat about piracy that is running rampant in our community and what, if anything, we can do to stop it. These are but just a few of the topics that are shared along with stories and fun conversation in this week's episode.

You can listen wherever you get your podcasts, but for more information, you can watch videos, read the blog, see some photos, get links and listen to the podcast at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/717-erik-tait

4. Magic Museum Bellachini - Episode No. 4
-------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

After Lucas Strack - see last episode - Franz Schweizer followed, who also called himself Bellachini (April 12, 1886 - October 4, 1969). Schweizer Bellachini was initially an assistant to Lucas Strack. When Lucas Strack retired from the stage, Franz Schweizer was allowed to continue the name. In 1918 he became a member of the German Magic Circle and stayed with the club until his death.

Schweizer-Bellachini also became very famous under his stage name and even performed in front of the German Emperor Wilhelm II, who appointed him a court artist. Schweizer-Bellachini presented further performances before Queen Wilhelmine of Holland and her husband Prince Henry.

During World War II, however, Schweizer had to give up his name because the name is Jewish. So Schweizer called himself "Garvin" for several years and also became very famous under this name. In his hometown of St. Martin, a fountain was named in his honor, which still exists today.

There are several colorful posters by Franz Schweizer on the name Bellachini and the name Garvin.

If you go to my Zauber-Pedia:
http://www.zauber-pedia.de/index.php?title=Kategorie:Plakate_Thema_Bellachini
you will find a list of Bellachini-Posters.

It continues with the Bellachinis.

See you next time.

5. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #79

As a young man growing up in England, I used to watch the annual Royal Variety Show on television every year without fail. The show, which was in aid of the Artists Benevolent Fund, featured the biggest stars of stage and screen from all around the world, and was always in the presence of royalty, often H.M. Queen Elizabeth accompanied by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and it invariably took place at the London Palladium Theatre.

It will seem strange that this year's show will, more than likely, be attended by King Charles III. Like many things in UK, it will take time to get used to, without the Queen, whom we all felt would be around forever!

On one of the first Royal Variety Shows that I watched, it was a juggler that stole the show. He didn't juggle lots of hoops or clubs. His act consisted of three balls, a few hats and some cigar boxes.

But what really stuck out was the perfect timing, the professionalism, and his supreme confidence. He had an immediate rapport with the audience, accentuated by a few deliberate pauses, and smiles, And his music was perfect. His name … Kris Kremo.

A couple of years later my parents took me to the London Palladium, my first visit there, to see a world class Variety Show with a wonderful line-up, which included Kris Kremo, and once again he was outstanding.

When I became a show producer, it was one of my ambitions to book Kris, and I'm pleased to say that I was able to do that on several occasions, including at the London Palladium Theatre. And he has always done a brilliant job.

Over the years Kris and I have become good friends, and whenever he visits Vegas, which he does a couple of times a year, he never fails to call me, and we get together for a coffee or Dinner.

This week was one of those occasions, and by coincidence when we were chatting, the phone rang and it was none other than Wally Eastwood, another great performer, juggler, comedy star and host of 'V' The Ultimate Variety Show at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino.

Wally himself is a phenomenon, with over 25,000 appearances on the Las Vegas Strip, and I've been fortunate to book him several times in my Variety Shows, including four times at the London Palladium.

Wally had heard that Kris was in town and wanted to come over to meet up with us. Wally remembered his early days in Vegas when Kris appeared for 11 years at the Stardust Hotel & Casino, and he too has always been a huge fan of Kris.

So, I was fortunate to spend a couple of hours talking about old times with these two showbiz legends. It doesn't get any better than that.

Kris is still in huge demand, he's appearing with his son Harrison, for the month of December at a Christmas Circus in Stuttgart, before performing at the Circus World Championships in Monte Carlo in January.

I'm not allowed to say how old Kris is, but I can tell you that he was born in 1951! What an amazing professional he is!
Along with millions of other people from around the world, I watched the Queen's funeral last week, and I witnessed the Lord Chamberlain, Baron Parker, the most senior official in the Queen's household breaking the wand of office signifying the end of his service to the Queen. A symbolic gesture marking the death of the sovereign that he served.

It was the first time that this ceremony had been seen by the public, and I wonder if it was where the tradition of the breaking of the magician's wand after a death had come from. I suspect it might be.

For the record, The Lord Chamberlain did perform something of an illusion, as he didn't actually snap the wand in two as it appeared, but instead unscrewed it in half.

Maybe, like King Charles, he too will be applying for membership of the Magic Circle soon!

6. Quirky Forces - A New Book From Chris Wardle
-------------------------------------
Message by Chris Wardle cjcwardle@hotmail.com

Having completely sold out in under 24 hours on its original release in August, 'Quirky Forces' is now available again from all major dealers.

Fifty sneaky, ingenious, offbeat forcing methods from award-winning originator Chris Wardle

Hardback, with over 200 pages and 40 graphics (photographs/images/tables).

With a foreword by Ian Rowland.

'Quirky Forces' contains fifty simple, devious forces over eight chapters, covering forces with words, images, cards, numbers, magic squares and grids, forcing gimmicks, book tests and colours, together with complete routines for the working magician.

'Chris Wardle has the rare knack of devising very good tricks indeed. His magical inventions are always practical, satisfyingly ingenious and slyly deceptive. Chris's creations rely on a clever force or a way to apply a familiar forcing principle in a new way. In this superb new book, Chris presents a range of his favourite forces and shows how to use them to create intriguing effects that are as baffling as they are fun to watch' Ian Rowland

'Chris is a treasure trove of inventive, commercial ideas, and this book is no different. I can always tell a good magic book by the amount of page corners I have folded down, and I can hand on heart say I turned more corners of Quirky Forces down than any other book.' Preston 'Spooky' Nyman, editor Mazel Magazine

'This IS the book you are looking for! Chris' fantastic new book contains FIFTY sneaky and devious forces over eight chapters. Basically, if you want to cleanly force anything at all, in any category whatsoever, Chris has you covered. Highest recommendation from me, I consider this book a must-buy.' Mark Elsdon

Mr. See It, the Magician with a Vision

They say that the hand is quicker than the eye, and one of my first full-time jobs as a professional magician was being one of three Texas magicians who performed as "Mr. See It, the Magician with a vision" for TSO (Texas State Optical) throughout Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

It was our job to teach kids about their eyes, and what a great job it was! "Iris the Eye Bunny" and I did more than 500 shows for TSO, and we were paid a professional fee for every show…plus all expenses. John Rainone, the first Mr. See It, had the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Bob Smith, the second, had the Houston area. I was the third and final one hired, and I had the Austin/San Antonio corridor…and everywhere else!

The show was largely influenced by ideas from David Ginn, and it was extremely popular with the TSO doctors…as well as teachers and students, who received the show at no charge to the school.

I had the opportunity to write and record my first and only rap song, "The Eyeball Rap," which was sung by "Art the Chart," with Axtell's Talking Chart.

"From the Eastern shore to sunny California,

"Your eye is protected by the mighty clear cornea;

"It acts like a window, and there's no doubt,

"It lets light in and keeps other things out!"

There was a verse for every part of the eye. (Not bad for a middle-aged white guy from Texas!)
Mr. See It, one of the best examples I have ever seen of "Magic with a Message," continued for three years. I have posters and other ephemera from the program on display at my Fantastic Magic Center.

The Fantastic Magic Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of magic. Check out my free weekly podcast at:

8. Ritualistica - John Carey #173

Message by John Carey (UK)

"Owen, did you know that for generations, gypsies and fortune tellers have used the cards to tell the past, present and future? In fact, if you're interested we can try a little ritual, one that I tried on myself earlier today?

Firstly I want you to give the cards a true triple cut and then gather up the packets. Now make a small pile by dealing a few, then shuffling the rest. Deal a few more on top of that packet and shuffle some more. Finally deal a few more from that deck you've shuffled so well and then stop on impulse. You did a great job. Please set the remaining cards aside.

Now I want you to further randomize that packet by dealing one to the left, another to the right of it and then another to the right of that. Continue dealing back and forth just like in a game of Poker, forming three random packets.

The card on top of the left-hand packet will represent your past (do a cold read). The top card of this middle packet concerns the present (cold read). Finally, the top card of the remaining packet represents the future. To be honest, nobody truly knows what the future holds.

So from a deck you shuffled, you have carried out a mystical ritual. You arrived at three random cards, the Ace of Clubs, the Four of Hearts and the Seven of Spades. That's unbelievable! You may wonder exactly why? Well I told you that earlier today I carried out this exact same ritual on
myself as I thought about the past, the present and the future. In my wallet I have the cards that came my way. The Ace of Clubs, the Four of Hearts and the Seven of Spades! Is that coincidence, fate or synchronicity?!!"

Method

The AC, 4H and 7S are on top of your deck. Inside your wallet you have those exact three cards from another different colored deck. The 'true triple cut' is the Jay Ose false cut. The deal and shuffle gambit is Ray Goulet's. It's been used in Chad Long's shuffling lesson and also by John Bannon in a few effects in Destination Zero.

9. News From The Academy Of Illusions

Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

Back in my day, (in my best cranky old man voice) we didn't have yer fancy schmancy websites. We had 8 x 10 photos, a printed Bio & Resume, all put together in a Press Kit. When an agent or client wanted our information, we had to put it into an envelope and mail it to them ... And we liked it!

That all changed 25 years ago, as websites became easy-to-access, virtual Press Kits. I built my first one in 1995, from basic html code. Every few years, I redesigned my magic site, to keep current. Since then, I've created dozens of websites, from simple to complex and from mild to wild. Many have been for festivals and fellow magicians. I also developed the graphics and video production skills that are integral to promotion, marketing and publicity.

I tell my students that, "The best thing I ever learned is to ever stop learning". That basic rule applies to much more than magic. The tech behind building websites is ever evolving. Anyone who wants to stay on the crest of the wave needs to keep learning.

Today, even with all the Social Media platforms, a professional website is an essential tool in selling yourself, services and business. It's the first place a client can go to to access all your pertinent info and media. Once there, they should be sold in less than a minute. In the world of Tik Tok attention spans, your website can be your strongest, or weakest, link.

In the last month, I created eight brand new, State-of-the-Art Websites, across the spectrum, from Entertainment to Corporate. To prepare for these, I did a full tech immersion, learning the latest html5, Parallax, Revolution Sliders, Dark Mode Designs, etc. The back end code to produce the next level visual web effects has gone from 40 or 50 lines per page to many thousand with hundreds of detailed files. All to produce a slick, and lasting, first impression. I put the same attention-to-detail, passion and creativity into these as I do my performances, mentoring and Downloads.

So, not only can I tell you what we did, "Back in my day", I can also say what I'm doing today. The Academy motto of 'Excelsior!' applies to all aspects of creating, performing and teaching. If you are interested in any of our services, please contact me directly, or head over to the Academy Website: www.AcademyofIllusions.com

11. A New Book, Channing Pollock - Magician
---------------------------------------------
Message by Dan Stapleton (US)

A new book, Channing Pollock- Magician, Actor, Philosopher, by author Michael Pascoe, has been complete (in its writing) and is presently being edited.

Although 2 1/2 years in the writing stage (and rewritten) because of so many last minute submissions from those acquainted with the "cast of characters within", the book will be filled with wonderful stories and photos, many that have never been published before.

The magic community will be notified when presales will be open as this will be a limited and numbered hard bound edition. I can only tell you this: from what I know of the book, Pascoe has spent an insurmountable amount of hours in his detailed research....you will feel as though you are traveling with Pollock in the timeline of his most remarkable career.

Notice will be given soon when the book is ready for ordering.
