Chop and Charlene
by Kent Cummins, Director

"You may be excited now, but you won't have any of these tricks a year from now," said my DSad. I had just opened my latest gift, the "Professional Outfit" Mysto Magic Set.

I protested, of course, although I knew that Dad was probably right. I had received three different Mysto Magic sets over the past three years, and I had very little in the way of props to show for it. I don't know what happened to those props, but somehow, they had mostly disappeared.

So, Dad suggested a challenge. He would give me $1.00 for each trick that I could still perform after one year. I quickly agreed! We took an inventory of the tricks available for the challenge.
I really tried to keep track of my magic stuff that year! When it came time for me to demonstrate my success (or failure), I was able to account for more than 20 tricks! I was going to be rich! ($20 in 1954 would be worth more than $200 today…and I was just 11 years old at the time of the bet.)

But then Dad offered me a different plan. He would give me the $20+ in cash, OR he would take me to the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans to see Chop and Charlene perform live with the Ted Lewis Revue. I don't remember how difficult the decision might have been, but I do remember the result. We saw Chop and Charlene, and I got Chop Chop's autograph on a scrap of paper that I still have.

Later, I realized that Dad had been looking for an excuse to see Ted Lewis, but it worked out for both of us.

9. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #71
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

So, another FISM has come and gone, and from all accounts the standard of magic was excellent. And the next one in 2025 is scheduled for Turin in Italy.

Italy has always been one of my favourite counties in the world and I've been fortunate to visit it on many occasions. And I'm sure that as Turin is the home city of my old friend Walter Rolfo, who I believe was very much involved with the Turin bid to host FISM, it promises to be a very successful and enjoyable convention.

Walter has been the mastermind behind the Masters of Magic conventions for several years and always produces a very professional and high quality convention. It helps that his background is in the world of television.

This time of year is definitely the convention season, with FISM rapidly followed by the IBM Convention in Atlanta and of course Abbotts Convention taking place this week.

Although I wasn't able to attend any of these conventions, I still found myself watching a lot of magic last week. You might remember that in my article a few weeks ago, I mentioned that I had been invited by Diana Zimmerman to go to the Magic Castle in Hollywood for the 'Future Stars of Magic' week.

What I hadn't realized was that on the night we went, it was a special Magic Castle Juniors 'Alumni' Night, and so there were around 40 past members, ranging in age from 20 years old to over 50! They weren't there to perform but just to have Dinner and watch the shows, and renew old acquaintances.

It actually turned out to be something of a Diana Zimmerman appreciation night, as everyone without exception sang her praises for starting the Junior program, with the help of Cary Grant, and spoke of the important role it had played in their lives, not only for those who took up magic full time, but also for several others who used it as a platform to carve out successful careers in many different professions.

We saw a few different shows, in the Close-up Gallery, the Parlour, and the Palace of Mystery, and the standard of magic, and confidence displayed by these young performers was first class across the board.

Although they were all excellent, I was particularly impressed by Mathew O'Neill in the Close-up Gallery. I think he has a very bright future. His magic was strong and his delivery and interaction with the audience was outstanding.

As much as I enjoyed these 'Future Stars', I was delighted that one of my very favourite, and slightly more senior magicians, also appeared in the Palace Show. His name, Christopher Hart.

I've booked Chris on a few shows that I've produced, and in my opinion, his act is totally original, extremely skillful and very entertaining, and his torn and restored music sheet is just exceptional.

The 'Future Stars' will hopefully have watched his act and learnt. They couldn't find a better role model, both as a professional performer, and as a genuinely nice man.

10. The Gift - John Carey #166

Magicians and friends around the world. A wise man once wrote that today is a gift and they call it the present. Well, I have a present for you all today.

Grab a deck of cards and shuffle them. They do say that all good things come in threes, so push off three cards and drop them face-down on the table in front of you. Now repeat that again, dropping another three cards on top of the first packet. Then do that once more and drop three cards on top of the packet on the table. Discard the rest of the deck. Shuffle that packet please.

Now further mix the cards by dealing one to your left and another to your right. Repeat that over and over until you run out of cards. You're doing great. Please pick up the packet on your right and mix it and place it back on the table. Now pick up the packet on your left and mix that too. Take a little peek at the bottom card of that packet and lock the thought of that card into your mind. Drop that packet on top of the other packet and square up.

So you're thinking of a card. A card I couldn't possibly know right? Mix the cards one last time by dealing one to your left and one to your right. Continue doing that until you run out of cards. Now drop the packet on the right on top of the other packet.

I did say I had a present for you remember? I'd like you to deal one card at a time into a packet on the table and spell out loud the word PRESENT, one card for each letter. Now just make a wish and turn over the last card you dealt. You truly are amazing!

12. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

One year ago, we began the process of setting up this Virtual Academy. I began experimenting with Zoom Lectures, Shows and Mentoring a year before that, with the first wave of lockdowns. Naturally, there was the initial learning curve, which included Lights, Sound, Backdrops, Webcams and OBS. Then there was the presentation side, getting used to performing and teaching using the cameras. So, by the time we launched the Academy, I was relatively tech savvy.

That set a solid foundation, upon which we've been able to build. Although I enjoy Virtual Shows, I still think that the biggest advantage of the new Zoom Era is in Teaching. The ability to present Lectures and Masterclasses, to Groups halfway around the world, is simply extraordinary. Never before have we been able to pass on the Art in this way. And Private Sessions are proving to be even more successful.

In the last week, we've picked up four new students, ages ranging from 7 to 70 and from beginner to expert. The advantage of these private sessions is that I'm able to focus 100% of my attention on the student. Sometimes we have a specific agenda and other times are pure improvisation. The constant is building a solid foundation in Sleight-of-Hand skills. To that end, I am always encouraging them to switch hands and learn every move Right to Left AND Left to Right. I also train all my students with my own performance philosophy and psychology. This includes my A.C.E. Acronym: Attitude, Charisma and Enthusiasm. It is highly gratifying to set the goals and then watch my students work to achieve them. As I always say, "Excellence never happens by accident."

And speaking of excellence, coming up on Saturday is the Ring & Ribbon Zoom Storming Masterclass. I will distill 44 years of experience, from thousands of Shows and Lectures, into this two hour Intensive Session. In my opinion, Ring and Ribbon Magic is a fundamental and essential skill that should be in every magician's repertoire. It all starts at 12pm LA Time, 3pm NY and 8pm UK. With attendees from all around the globe, these Zoom Storming Sessions have become a popular way to learn world class magic, at a very affordable price. Plus, we record the Sessions and attendees all receive a copy as an HD Digital Download, at no extra cost. A few tickets are still available. Please head over to www.MagicLadder.net for all the details.
