Mysto Magic - Part 2

"Mysto the Magician" was my first stage name, after receiving the smallest A.C. Gilbert Mysto Magic Set in 1949. Every year after that, Dad gave me the next biggest set, ending with the "Professional Outfit" when I was in the fourth grade. By then I was calling myself "Kent MYSTO Cummins, adding my real name.

The Large Set came in a big red suitcase with four holes in the bottom, which took four black dowels (included in the set) to make into a magic table. There was also black plastic cloth for a table drape. There were even posters which I used to advertise my shows!

My favorite prop was a glass holder for the Rising Card Trick. It was not gimmicked (the secret turned out to be a piece of black thread), but it perfectly held one deck of ordinary playing cards. I loved both the prop and the effect.

But then disaster struck. I accidentally dropped the glass holder and it broke. No more Rising Card Trick! The glass holder and the junior magician were both shattered.

My dad suggested that I write to the A.C. Gilbert Company and see if I could purchase a replacement. I wrote and mailed the letter on February 14, 1956. A reply dated February 16 came on official "The A.C. Gilbert Co" letterhead.
"Dear Mr. Cummins:

"We have discontinued the large Magic Set, but have made a special effort and are mailing you today under separate cover the glass holder…

"We ordinarily do not sell these items separately…but as you are so interested in Magic…These items are going to be shipped to you gratis…" An autographed photo of Mr. Gilbert was included.

6. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #70

Message by Paul Stone (US)

Every Tuesday in Las Vegas, at a studio not far from Las Vegas airport, a TV Show aimed at British Expats across the world is recorded live. It is appropriately called 'Spill the Tea'.

It has been running weekly for over three years, and although it covers a lot of British inspired news, it also regularly features special studio guests, which have included amongst others, Mac King and David Goldrake.

The show is produced by Show Creators, a company owned by two really good friends of mine, Ian Herrington and Amanda Deacon. I've known them both for more than 30 years.

I used to book them at many corporate and charity events that I produced, mainly at prestigious London West End Hotels. They were known as Adam & Eve, and they were without doubt the greatest walkabout robots in the world. They were so good that they toured with Michael Jackson.

Since then, they have taken their art to a whole new level, and expanded their talents, producing a variety of top level events, based out of their impressive Las Vegas studio. Both Ian and Amanda are amazingly creative, and they are passionate about delivering a high quality service to their increasingly growing client list.

When clients come calling, Ian still willingly dons his incredible robotic suit, and for the past four weeks, he has once again had to assume his robotic persona, entertaining thousands at Disneyworld, and no doubt shedding several pounds in the process, in the heat and humidity of Florida.

I mention all this because whilst Ian was out of town, I had the opportunity to take his place and co-host the Spill the Tea Show, with his regular co-host and sparring partner, Sam Ratcliffe, originally from Sheffield, who never misses the chance to remind everybody of that fact. I've tried to balance that by mentioning my home city of Liverpool just as often!

It was great fun, and last week we invited Lynette Chappell, for many years Siegfried & Roy's leading lady and Evil Queen, to be the special guest on the show, and it was fascinating to hear about her incredible career, and listen to a few of her stories.

Time literally flew by, and it was a real insight into the dedication needed to perform night after night, week after week, for over 30 years at the very highest level of showbusiness.

Over the years, I've done several radio and TV interviews, but presenting a 'live' show requires a particular discipline, and you definitely need to be on your toes, and stay fully focused for the whole duration of the show, because the unexpected can, and does happen, and when it does, you have to be ready for it.

There is a lesson to be learnt here for all entertainers, and especially magicians, and not just if, or when, they appear on TV. You need to always be prepared for the unexpected, and have a plan B, something to get you out of trouble, if things go awry during your show.

I vividly remember several years ago working on the Parkinson Christmas Magic TV Special in London. (Michael Parkinson was THE late night TV chat show host in England). John Fisher was the show's executive producer and the show starred Fred Kaps, Richiardi Junior, and Ricky Jay.

During one of his illusions, Richiardi suffered one of those moments, which could have been catastrophic, particularly as the show was being watched live by millions of people but, because of his experience, and his professionalism, he didn't panic. He knew exactly what needed to be done, and because of it, he got out of trouble brilliantly, and the audience were none the wiser. That's the sign of a true pro.

Here's a nice casual card force using the properties of the Dr Elliot Bottom deal. Your force card starts out on the face of the deck. Slip shuffle retaining it there. Then commence a hand-to-hand spread and ask a spectator to touch any card.

When they do pull away all the cards up to and including this card away from the deck, at the same time extending your right second finger onto the force card and secretly pulling it under the spread and adding it below the packet you are pulling away to the right. Tap the left long edge of the right hand packet against the back of the left hands cards and square it.

Raise the right hands packet upwards and ask your spectator to remember the card they apparently selected. This is your force card. Assemble the deck and perform a little miracle.

"Sometimes", as the saying goes, "Less is More". This certainly applies to Magic. I vividly recall seeing Slydini perform his Paper Balls & Hat on TV in 1976. To see so much wonder created from such simple objects was a revelation, which left an indelible impression on me. Two years later, when I was working at Hollywood Magic, I had a similar experience, but this time, it was live! I was lucky that Earl Nelson was also working there. He had just released his book, "Variations". One day, he showed me a few of his Ring and Ribbon moves, including "Clifton's Ring Move". I was completely blown away. Like Slydini, the elegant simplicity in Earl's performance was the key to the wonder.

From that moment, I dedicated myself to the Ring and Ribbon. My initial breakthrough was creating my own False Thread. This was based upon how I would normally thread a ring onto a ribbon. A number of master magicians were regulars at the shop, including Ray Grismer and Clifton. When they saw my passion, they were quite happy to assist. From Clifton, I learned the intricate details of his famous move, and then added onto it. Ray taught me his incredible effect where the ring comes off in the spectator's hands and the "Grismer Pinch" display. Over the next year or so, I created the "Knot to Ring Production", the "Off Again, On Again" sequence and the "Spinning Grand Finale." All of these came together to form my first Signature Routine, "The Symphony on the Ring and Ribbon".

I have since performed it thousands of times, from The Magic Castle to The Magic Circle, from 4F to FISM, under all conditions: Close-up, Strolling, Street, Stage and TV, from Kids to Corporate. Whether impromptu with a borrowed ring are in a formal show, it never fails to amaze. Over the years, I've continued to develop and perfect additional moves and nuances. In 1986, the Routine was featured in my "Magic For The New World '' book. That's when I began teaching it to others, in Private Lessons, Lectures and Workshops. For me, it's the ultimate pack small, play big effect: Powerful, practical, visual and angle proof, completely examinable, with instantly resets and fits in your pocket.

Now, having spent 40 years mastering and teaching these incredible effects, I've decided to focus on the Ring and Ribbon in our next ZoomStorming. In this intensive, 2 hour Masterclass, I will perform and teach my many original moves, plus improvements on classic methods. These apply to Ribbon, Cord and Rope for all sizes of Finger Rings and Bracelets. This Session will be held on Saturday, August 6th at 12pm LA, 3pm NY and 8pm London. As always, the low Ticket Price includes the full HD Digital Download. You can Register at: www.MagicLadder.net

As always, when teaching, I fully acknowledge the giants, upon whose shoulders I stand. So, I'd like to imagine that, somewhere in that Magic Castle in the Sky, Clifton and Ray Grismer, are smiling down, as their memory and legacy lives on.
