Message by Paul Romhany - Editor Vanish Magazine

As a pre-FISM edition of Vanish we are featuring one of the greatest magicians of our times - Juliana Chen. Juliana Chen's performances are mesmerizing. Her solo magic, staged in perfect sync with her music, is graceful, her face is regal with a hint of a smile. She magically draws you forward to see what her next flick of the wrist will produce. It might be perfectly symmetrical card fans or hundreds of flying cards that leave audiences gasping in awe, whatever the magic, it will be memorable.

- We also feature Smoke & Mirrors online theatre shows and readers of Vanish get a special link to a full evening show.

- Ben Robinson is back from a performance in Italy and has an article about Conditioning The Artist.

- Queen of Magic is a new film about to start production in August, and it features Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actor Holly Curran. Find out more about this movie in this edition.

- Felicity Fields continues her series A Squib In The World and she discusses an upcoming convention about Diversity in Magic.

- We go behind the scenes and look at Anverdi and the latest release by Murphy's Magic Color Match. Murphy's are the only official company who have paid rights to use any of Anverdi's products and their Anverdi release is taking the magic and mentalism world by storm.

- Magic Tricks - Lots of great magic including routines for stage/parlor, mentalism and close-up.

Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

Something for everyone.

Found on the internet:

Old Québec
Stroll North America's oldest streets
Walk along the fortified walls surrounding this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and admire the view from every angle. For all its 400 years of incredible history, it's still very much alive: magical in the winter and popping in the summer. Full of charming little streets and local shops, Old Québec is best visited on foot.

Château Frontenac
Québec City's most famous landmark is also the most photographed hotel in the world. Whether you're just stopping by for a tour of the Château or staying for the night, it's well worth a visit!

Dufferin Terrace
Take a stroll along Dufferin Terrace for a magnificent view of the St. Lawrence River and Château Frontenac, as well as live entertainment in the summer and a toboggan run in the winter. Named in honour of Lord Dufferin, a governor general of Canada who loved Québec City, the terrace is so eternally popular that it has been expanded twice since it was first built. While you're there, hit up another historic site: the remains of the Saint Louis Forts and Châteaux, which lie beneath this iconic promenade. The Ramparts and Gates
Québec is the only walled city north of Mexico? The walls and four gates that surround the Old City will make you feel like you've travelled back in time.
Petit Champlain: With its many local shops and enchanting ambiance, this charming pedestrian street is sure to win you over. Known for its concentration of art galleries and fine bistros, Petit Champlain is a bona fide memory maker.

Place Royale
Place Royale, this historical gem, is where Québec City was officially founded. The unique period architecture testifies to the combined French and British influences so characteristic of the city's built environment.

Plains of Abraham
On September 13, 1759, the giant urban park known as the Plains of Abraham was the site of the famous Battle of Québec, the confrontation that decided Canada's fate when the French lost the city to the British.

Citadelle de Québec
At the top of the famous Cap Diamant lies the biggest British fortress in North America. Built by the British between 1820 and 1850 to defend the city, the Citadelle is a remarkable military heritage site and home to the Musée Royal 22e Regiment, where you can learn all about the history of the regiment and the fortress.
Basilica Cathedral Notre-Dame de Québec Located in the heart of Old Québec, this basilica cathedral was home to the first Catholic parish north of the Spanish colonies. Its important place in the city's history is reflected in its exceptional archite+cture.
Montmorency Falls
See a waterfall that's 30 metres higher than Niagara Falls
Whether you're riding the gondola, climbing the scenic stairway or crossing the suspension bridge, the views of the Montmorency Falls are simply breathtaking. Experience the power of nature, only 15 minutes from downtown.
Suspension Bridge
From Manoir Montmorency, a path runs along the cliff's edge to the suspension bridge at the very top of the falls. Once on the bridge, you'll experience the overwhelming power of the falls as it rushes and roars beneath your feet.
Cable Car
Take the gondola for more great views of the falls and a superb panorama of Île d'Orléans and Québec City.

Zipline: This one is for me!
If you're a thrill-seeker, the double zipline will get you extremely close to the falls. Experience the adrenaline rush on your own or with a friend. You'll be talking about it for months! *Temporarily closed until further notice* Via Ferrata
Explore the falls from a different angle along the via ferrata. It's safe, easy (no need to handle a carabiner), and gives you the chance to get up close to the falls along 3 different routes. The Manoir restaurant and terrace
The chef of Manoir Montmorency invites you to pull up a chair on the terrace. The natural panoramic scenery is exceptional, the menu features a vast array of delights, and the culinary offerings overflow with colour and flavour.

Jacques-Cartier National Park
Explore one of Québec's most dazzling glacial valleys
Jacques Cartier National Park, a vast and mountainous plateau crisscrossed by deep valleys and rivers, is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. There are a multitude of ways to experience the park and its lush surroundings. Hiking along the many trails, you may encounter beavers, deer, and even moose in their natural habitats.

Hiking Trails
Jacques Cartier National Park boasts over 100 km of hiking trails. With its abundant greenery and breathtaking views, it's a great place to discover the beauty of the region. In the fall, the hillsides covered in blazing fall foliage make for a memorable experience. RANCIS GAGNON

Île d'Orléans
Connect with local artisans on a day trip full of history and flavours
Stop in at the many artisan outlets and farm stands around the island for a delicious sampling of local products and the tastiest shopping you've done in years! Driving around Île d'Orléans is like a trip back in time to 18th century rural Québec, complete with centuries-old villages, farms, churches, and heritage homes. As the birthplace of French North America, it's ground zero for many of our ancestors-families that arrived from France and went on to make their homes throughout the continent. The island is also home to 5 of Québec's prettiest villages.
Local Artisans and Products.

You'll find plenty of gourmet stops on the island. Visit the vineyards, cider producers, chocolate shops, vinegar makers, and cheesemakers and enjoy a picnic in one of the picturesque villages looking out over the St. Lawrence River. The island is so authentic and the people so welcoming, you're bound to have a memorable day.

Île d'Orléans has over 600 historic buildings that have been lovingly restored and preserved, including magnificent stone houses that date back to the French colonial era and the oldest rural church in New France.

4. July Issue Of Genii Magazine

Message by Richard Kaufman - Editor Genii Magazine

Step inside and get tens of thousands of pages for as little as $35 when you subscribe to Genii at www.geniimagazine.com. All back issues of Genii and MAGIC Magazine are yours to read for free.

In this, the July issue, we feature one of the busiest magicians perhaps you've never heard of, Juan Pablo. Through her interview, Alba introduces us to her fellow Argentinian. We have complete coverage of the long-awaited return of MAGIC Live! that was held in May (there were over 1,000 days since the last one). Yuki Kadoya brings us coverage of Tenyo's "Magic Fan Meeting" this past March - another first since the beginning of the pandemic. Magic lost another wonderful performer: Chuck Fayne, who is remembered this month.

Vanessa Armstrong brings us the news in "The Eye." Shawn McMaster, Genii's Hollywood correspondent, pens "Knights at The Magic Castle." In "Happiness is the Road," Hannibal shares a story that almost didn't happen, and Krystyn Lambert focuses her critical eye on context in "Stage as Studio."

Jonathan Friedman deals us a predictive card effect and a sort-a-kind-a "high-tech" bit with a Sharpie pen in "Magicana." Jon Racherbaumer leaves them all blank in "Exhumations." David Regal tackles the Card Rise in "Material Concessions." In "Dealing With It," John Bannon serves up a "Big Mac[Donald's Aces]" using no gimmicks. And Jim Steinmeyer makes it rough and smooth in "Conjuring."

Suzanne kicks off "Light from the Lamp" with video reviews, Ryan Plunkett looks at tricks, and Nathan Coe Marsh digests the books.

All that and more is all on the inside of your copy of Genii, The Conjurors' Magazine. Step on in, won't you?

5. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #67
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

A couple of days ago I was chatting on the phone with my good friend Diana Zimmerman.

As I mentioned in one of my previous articles, Diana started the Junior program at the Magic Castle forty years ago, and is still very much involved today.

Several of these juniors have developed into top professionals which is a great source of pride for Diana.

Diana recently invited me to visit the Magic Castle during the last week of July, which is the 'Future Stars' week. This is a much anticipated event in the Magic Castle calendar because it is a chance to get to see some really talented young magicians in action, and who knows, maybe even a future Vegas Headliner!

It is also a wonderful opportunity for these young performers to experience a real world show with all the necessary disciplines and conditions of a professional engagement.

They can practice forever in front of a mirror, or for their friends and family, but the true test is in front of a paying audience. That's when a young performer finds out what he or she is made of!

I grew up in England, and in those days, particularly in the North of England, there were literally hundreds of 'working mens' clubs. These were fairly basic social clubs with bars catering mainly to blue collar workers. There was entertainment every weekend, ranging from a local comedian, singer, musical duo to a magic act.

Unlike many of today's acts, you were required to perform two different 45 minute spots, which is somewhat similar to working on cruise ships nowadays, in front of audiences, who more often than not, had consumed a few drinks, and were not easy to work to, especially for a magician!

But my point is that they did at least offer somewhere to learn the trade, basically an opportunity to perform an act on a regular basis, and if you weren't very good, to get better, and fast!

It is tough for youngsters now to get that sort of experience, which is why having the chance to perform three shows a night, seven days a week at the Magic Castle is invaluable, and will benefit them all greatly.

6. Magical Women With Connie Boyd
--------------------------------------------
Message by Connie Boyd (USA)

Melinda Saxe's stage magic and illusion performance from 1988 on the Smothers Brothers television show taped in Los Angeles. This clip contains vintage video footage of Melinda's earlier work, at the beginning of her magic career.

Melinda headlined in her own magic show at the Lady Luck Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. She was billed as "The First Lady of Magic" for the various shows she presented in a succession of Las Vegas venues throughout her career. Her first starring show was a small cabaret theatre at the Bourbon Street Hotel in the late 1980's. At the height of her fame she starred in big shows with large supporting casts at some of the city's best known locations.

Melinda got her start as a dancer for Siegfried & Roy's magic show at the Frontier Hotel in 1982 and comes from a show business family. In 1998 the International Magicians Society named her "Magician of the Year" in its "Merlin" awards.

Melinda's show at the Lady Luck was produced by Gary Ouellet. Gary Ouellet was also the producer of the World's Greatest Magic television specials broadcast on the NBC network and cast Melinda in both the first & second season. Melinda's 2nd appearance included the debut of the Drill of Death illusion, in which Saxe was chained up in front of a giant drill which appeared to advance and impale her before lifting her up and spinning her limp body high above the stage.

Ouellet was again influential in promoting Saxe's career when she starred in her own special for Disney in 1997.

8. Quadruple Prediction - John Carey #163
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

Quadruple Prediction is a multiple prediction effect that's a real fooler. You will require a deck of cards, four blank business cards and a pen. Ahead of time take out the Aces from the deck. Ribbon spread the rest of the deck face-up on the table. Place the Ace of Clubs third or fourth
from the face. Then place the Ace of Hearts a few cards after that. Next take the Ace of Spades and place that into the spread, two or three cards after the Ace of Hearts. Finally place the Ace of Diamonds into the spread two or three cards after the Ace of Hearts. Now it's showtime.

Bring out the deck, business cards and pen. Turn the deck face-up and execute a ribbon spread, keeping the bottom 15-20 cards hidden/bunched up, concealing the Aces. Gather up the deck and turn it facedown. Overhand shuffle about 30 cards and then throw the remaining cards on top. This places your setup in and around the upper third of the deck. Table the deck in front of you lengthwise.

"I'm going to attempt to predict the future. Tomorrow it will rain! No seriously, let me write down a few things. Pick up a business card and write Ace of Clubs onto it sight unseen. Table that card writing side down to your left. Then pick up another business card, act out a moment of
concentration and then write Ace of Hearts onto it and table it writing side down to the right of the first business card. Next pick up a third business card and write Ace of Spades on it and table that next to the second business card. Finally take the remaining business card and write Ace of
Diamonds on it and table that at the far right end of the row of business cards. Status check: Four predictions on the table in Ace of Clubs, Ace of Hearts, Ace of Spades, and Ace of Diamonds order from left to right.

Now we will utilize an absolutely beautiful concept of Charles Jordan, which will enable our participant to riffle shuffle the deck twice and yet keep our Aces totally under our control. Cut off just over half the tabled deck to the right and ask your helper to riffle shuffle them and square
up. "I want this to be the fairest thing you've ever seen, so shuffle them again!" As before cut off just over half the deck to the right and have them riffle shuffle once again and square up. Everything appears incredibly fair and yet, believe it or not, the Aces are still under your control!

"Every deck of 52 cards consists of 13 values that are repeated four times. Jacks are good, Queens are great and Kings are even better. But you just can't beat the...?" They should reply Aces. If not tell them. "You shuffled that deck not once, but twice." Ask your helper to pick up the deck and turn it face-up and then start spreading through the deck with the faces towards themselves and remove the first Ace they come to. It will be the Ace of Clubs, thanks to the genius of Charles Jordan. Have them table it in front of your first prediction on the far left of the row of four business cards. Have them carry out the same actions and remove the next Ace they
arrive at. It will be the Ace of Hearts.

Direct them to place it face-down in front of your second prediction. Once more have them remove the next Ace in the deck, the Ace of Spades and table that in front of your third
prediction face-down. Finally they are asked to remove the final Ace- Ace of Diamonds and table that face-down in front of your final prediction. Build up how fair everything has been, their shuffles etc and then ask them to turn each of the Aces face-up. Then reveal one at a time that you indeed did predict the future showing a perfect quadruple prediction!

Notes: One can substitute a Rosetta shuffle if you are working for someone who can't riffle shuffle.

10. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

It's another banner week at the Academy! One of our students, Rod Chow, has just become the S.A.M. National President. His lifelong interest in magic was sparked when his parents took him on vacation to Reno, NV. Staying at the Circus Circus Casino, he was captivated with the Midway Shows and, specifically, the Magic Shop. From that moment on, like so many of us, he was hooked. Growing up in Vancouver, Canada, Rod quickly developed a solid foundation in Sleight-of-hand skills and was soon brought into the local Magic Club. 50 years later, he has won countless awards, including last year's PCAM Gold Medal.

Rod and I have been friends for 30 years and we've met many times at Conventions, from 4F to FISM. A year ago, he asked me to coach and direct him on his Celestial Astrology Act. It was already well structured and his commitment to excellence is second-to-none. We quickly found a creative groove to upgrade the effects while fine-tuning the script, character and choreography. This was all accomplished, via weekly Zoom Sessions, from halfway around the world. By September, he was the closing act on the Academy's "Excelsior Gala" Show and in May, he gave his debut performance for The Magic Castle, on their Virtual Show. So, it's by no accident that he now reaches this latest career milestone. Congratulations, Rod! We wish you a fantastic year as the "Most Illustrious" for the Society of American Magicians.

Coming up this Saturday is the Cloaking Device ZoomStorming Session: As many magicians know, the Cloaking Device is a Powerful and Versatile Utility Device. I created this turbo charged Sanada Gimmick 22 years ago and have used it ever since for Close up, Strolling, Street & Stage, Kids to Corporate, even fully surrounded. In this 2 hour Masterclass, I'll cover Basic Handling, Loads, Steals & Ditches. I'll then Perform & Teach my Signature Routines - Triple Lightning Bill Switch, T&R Card, Cut & Restored Ribbon, Vortex Streamer Production, Lightning Card Switch & more!

The ticket price includes HD Recording of the Session. As a bonus, pre-registrants receive the Sanada Gimmick and Cloaking Device Construction Downloads! This is a Live Masterclass that begins at 12pm LA, 3pm NY, 8pm UK on July 9th and 5am SYD, 7am AUK on July 10th. So I'll be up bright eyed and bushy tailed! Tickets and details are available from www.magicladder.net
