2. FISM Update - Restaurants In Old Quebec
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

Restaurants in Old Quebec

There are many interesting restaurants in and around Old Quebec. Below are just a few that are unique in one way or another.

I highly recommend the revolving restaurant on top of The Concord Hotel. The food and service are both excellent and the view of Quebec City and the St. Lawrence River can't be beat. Not cheap but worth the price.

Bistrot Le Pape Gorges was established as a restaurant in 1984. It was built as a home in 1668, by an arquebusier, someone who specialized in the production of weapons. It was the first to serve wine by the glass in Quebec. Today it specializes in Quebec's fine cheeses, as well as Nachos, homemade chili con carne, soups of the day, sandwiches and a wide selection of wines and beers all of which make its reputation.

You can enjoy the hot sunny days on their beautiful terrace or eat inside. Appreciated by the locals, it's a unique place to discover. Further, for those who may wish to spend an excellent evening and enjoy a festive musical experience before FISM begins, the Bistrot Pape-Georges presents acoustic blues shows with local bands from Thursday to Saturday.

Le Lapin Sauté, 52 Rue du Petit Champlain

Their menu specializes in maple products, something Quebec is known for. It's a very cozy place known for rabbit meat, just like its name. Reservation is highly recommended.

Reviews from Trip Advisor tell the tale:

We had a sample platter of rabbit and duck. It was excellent, and large enough to share. The place is small but the price is not as small so prepare to pay for your experience.

'A Quebec must try! The ambiance in the heart of Quebec makes it perfect and amazing. The maple syrup is one of a kind. The meat was melting in my mouth. I loved it."

"Personally, I thought the maple pork was by far one of the top 3 best meals I have ever eaten in my life."

Légende, 255 Rue Saint-Paul

This is a stylish, upscale venue featuring seasonal Canadian dishes, tasting menus, wine pairings & a patio. It has exceptional food, but it's fairly expensive.

Reviews from Trip Advisor:

'It has an absolutely amazing 6 course meal tasting, the food was exceptionally delicious, things I would have never tried. This experience gave me some tastes that have become some of my favorite dishes. '(This type of meal gives you a small sample of several meals you might wish to try later.)

When I come back to Quebed from Ontario I will definitely be going back to this restaurant.'
'The drinks are different- but I did end up getting a sangria and it was made to perfection.
I travel quite a bit, and make it a point to try different restaurants whenever I can. I've been to QC many times, but this was my first time at Légende. We had the dinner tasting menu. Each piece was paired masterfully with a wine. I'm still thinking about the halibut several days later. Every bite of every dish was phenomenal.'

Bistro Sous le Fort, 48 Rue Sous-le-Fort offers a more reasonably priced meal with excellent reviews:

Reviews:

'Très délicieuse! The venison was so tender and the potatoes had a flavor that exploded in your mouth. Nicholas, our server was adorable and made the whole experience a memorable one.'
'Best salmon dish I've ever had - thanks to the host for recommending it vs the steak. My daughter had the warmed chicken salad and said the chicken was so tender it just broke off with her fork. My other daughter really enjoyed her elk burger. All that was topped off with a melt in your mouth chocolate cake dessert. We're planning to return.'

'Stumbled upon this cozy restaurant and I'm so glad I did. I was amazed by the service and food! The French onion soup was good and the mushroom ravioli was life changing! My partner got the elk burger with the poutine upgrade and that was delicious as well!'

And don't forget the restaurant mentioned in Louise Penny's book, Bury your Dead:

Aux Anciens Canadiens 34 Rue Saint-Louis

Housed in a historic home, this popular spot offers gourmet Quebec cuisine in quaint surrounds.
It offers a variety of steaks, and other tasty meals

Los Angeles

The Former Magician Who Now Owns Magic Castle Has Big Plans for the Place

Randy Pitchford, a magician turned video-game mogul, just bought L.A.'s legendary magic castle, but he still has a few tricks up his sleeve

The 113-year-old Gothic chateau looms high on a hill, just a block off Hollywood Boulevard. Six decades ago, comedy writer Milt Larsen was gazing out his office window and thought the spooky mansion looked perfect for the magic club he and his TV producer brother, Bill, were dreaming about. Today, the Magic Castle sprawls over four floors of L.A.'s Historic-Cultural Monument No. 406, and generations of magic enthusiasts, movie folk, and those in the know have been able to visit, if they gained membership or scored a guest pass to the world's greatest hideout for wizards.

Four generations of the Larsen family have performed magic. William Larsen gave up his law practice to travel the vaudeville circuit with his wife and their children, Milt and Bill Jr., in the 1930s. Granddaughter Erika Larsen has been president of the board for the Academy of Magical Arts (the nonprofit that runs the club) and has continued the tradition of hosting the Brookledge Follies, private variety shows at the family's home theater near Hancock Park.

Milt, now 91, can still be found at the Castle's Palace Bar most nights. He has compared his relationship with his brother to that of Walt and Roy Disney-that is, the creative side needs the financial genius to make the vision come to life. But Bill died in the '90s, and the financial situation became precarious when the club was saddled with costly repairs from a fire in 2011. Then the land the club rented, which included neighboring Yamashiro restaurant, was offered for sale. The property was eventually split up, and the famed Japanese restaurant sold. But the financial instability continued.

Enter video-game mogul Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox Entertainment. He just bought the Magic Castle. The deal includes the land and landmark building, as well as the trademarks and intellectual property.

"For as long as I've known about the Magic Castle, it's been a bit precarious," says superstar magician David Copperfield. "I always worried about it. Now I don't need to. [Randy] has a day job, but in my mind, he's a magician."

Pitchford is a longtime castle member who began his career as a professional magician at the castle and at the Wizardz club at Universal CityWalk. After pivoting to study computer programming, he decamped to Texas and began designing video games, working on some popular titles including Duke Nukem before founding Gearbox in 1999. His breakout game, the Mad Max-style looter shooter Borderlands, spawned three sequels and a prequel and sold 48 million copies, generating over $1 billion in sales.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #64

Message by Paul Stone (US)

Last weekend I was invited by Lynetta Welch and Lisa Caterbone to a surprise Birthday Party they were throwing for Lupe Nielsen.

Lupe, who was married to magic legend Norm Nielsen for 25 years before he sadly died two years ago, is not the easiest person to surprise, so it took a great deal of secret planning to pull it off!

Lupe is one talented lady, and among her many accomplishments she is an amazing wood worker, and produces some of the most intricate and beautiful props.

This is in itself quite miraculous as Lupe suffers from serious problems with her vision but, like every obstacle that she has had to face in the last few years, including dealing with aggressive breast cancer, she does so with an energy and enthusiasm that puts most others to shame.

Back to the surprise party, Lupe was attending a woodworking class, and so for a couple of hours there was manic activity in her kitchen setting up banners, food and drink.

When she arrived back from her class , all the guests were assembled in the kitchen and when Lupe walked in, the place erupted! Lupe was blown away as she had absolutely no idea about the party. Hats off to Lynette and Lisa!

Lupe is one of magic's unsung heroes, and is loved by everybody. If anyone deserved a surprise party, it was her!

I caught up with a few people there that I hadn't seen for a while, including Mia, of Petrik & Mia, whom I last spoke to over 25 years ago. She was in great form.

Amongst the other guests were Steven Mullica, Fielding West, Scott Wells, visiting Las Vegas from Texas, and Lisa and Scott Land. And Mac King and his lovely wife Jennifer also made an appearance. Mac was dashing off to the Excalibur Hotel & Casino for his brilliant afternoon show.

Scott Land, for those of you who might not know his name, is probably the foremost puppeteer in USA. He not only performs but also manufactures the most incredible hand-made marionettes. And Scott presents regular marionette workshops.

Scott's puppetry was featured throughout the Paramount Pictures 'Team America: World Police'.

The Siegfried & Roy Auction at Bonhams in Los Angeles took place last week. The 500 lots included items of furniture, art, and jewelry from Siegfried & Roy's Jungle Palace and Little Bavaria. All proceeds will go towards the SARMOTI Foundation, Siegfried & Roy's personal charity.

6. The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Although you haven't been reading anything here about recent episodes on The Magic Word Podcast, we have been continually posting weekly updates. Our recent travels have precluded posting news about the weekly offerings. Current plans will keep us in Las Vegas through the end of June where we will be gathering content for the podcast.

But just to get you up to speed on what you may have missed over the past couple of weeks, in Episode #686 we featured a really great conversation with Master Payne. He was a featured speaker at MAGIC Live! this year and kicked off the first General Session with his clever PowerPoint presentation. He is one of those who has been an oft requested guest, and I'm glad we finally got around to it. You can listen wherever you get your podcasts, but for more information and content, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/686-master-payne

Last week in Episode #687 we featured a regular performer at the Chicago Magic Lounge, Luis Carreon. We not only talked about performing in nightclubs, but also discussed the do's and don'ts of what is or isn't considered socially acceptable in what we say from the stage to our audience. You can listen to this podcast, view some videos, read the blog, and get additional information at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/687-luis-carreon

This week we chatted with Losander, the Master of Levitation, in his Las Vegas Magic Theater. He and Luna Shimada developed this "pocket theater" near the downtown area of the "Entertainment Capitol." Losander also told us about his inspiration(s) for creating levitation and other magic effects. Dirk Losander is not only a creator but also a magic dealer and performer often seen at magic conventions. You can listen to our conversation wherever you get your podcasts, but for more information and background, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/688-losander

And be sure to subscribe to our weekly podletter to keep up to date on who is our guest from week to week plus suggestions from the archives of episodes you may have missed or need to hear a second time.

This week we welcome the two newest members of the Friends of The Magic Word, Samuel Thielman and Michael W. McClure. Thank you, gentlemen, for your financial support and help to keep this podcast going into the future. Thank you for putting your money where your ears are!

8. GCAAN - John Carey #163
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

GCAAN is my approach to a card at any number, using as the underlying method the Gilbreath principle. You will require two decks. In the red deck take out the Two of Clubs, Five of Hearts, Six of Diamonds, Eight of Spades, and the Nine of Hearts. Place them on top of the deck
with the Two of Clubs uppermost. Now take out the mates of the first four cards and add a duplicate Nine of Hearts to them. Set this packet in the reverse order of the cards on top of the deck, so they will run Nine of Hearts, Eight of Clubs, Six of Hearts, Five of Diamonds, and Two of Spades. Pop that packet into the middle of the deck with a Joker above the duplicate Nine of Hearts. Take a blue deck and remove the Nine of Hearts from it and position it twenty first from the top of the deck.

Bring out both cased decks and toss them onto the table. Ask a participant to freely name red or blue? If they say red you pick up that deck and say you will work with that. Then hand them the blue deck and ask them to place it inside their pocket. However if they say blue, simply hand that
deck to them and ask them to pocket it. Pick up the red deck and remove the cards. A simple magician's choice.

Execute a false shuffle or cut if you so wish. Then turn the deck face-up. "Let's remove the Joker before we start." Hand to hand spread through the deck and separate the hands at the Joker so that it's on the face of the left hand packet. Push it off to one side and discard it, then place both
packets you are holding face-down next to each other in position for a tabled riffle shuffle. Ask your participant to riffle shuffle the deck and then square up. Then ask them to deal five cards from the top as you say that you will play a little game of mental Poker with them. Despite the fact that they have genuinely shuffled the deck, the cards they have dealt will consist of a Two, Five, Six, Eight, and Nine of Hearts thanks to Gilbreath.

Have your helper table the deck and pick up the packet they dealt. Ask them to mix the packet and then spread it with the faces towards themselves, like a hand of Poker. "So, Fabrice, you shuffled the deck and dealt a hand of Poker. Please think of the highest card you see. Then take
that card out and drop it on top of the deck. Next add up the values or numbers of the other cards to form a random number in your mind. You have a total? Put those cards on top of the deck and replace the cards inside the box. So now you are thinking of a card and a number yes?" They will confirm that they indeed are. The number they are thinking of will be 21 and the card the Nine of Hearts.

Everything looks so clean and fair. Remind your participant that they placed another deck in their pocket at the start. Ask them to remove the deck and take out the cards. Get them to reveal the name of the card they are thinking of and the number. Then have them deal 20 cards out loud
and face-up into a packet on the table. Stop them at this point to build up suspense. Remind the audience how your helper shuffled the other deck and did everything themselves. Have your helper turn the next card faceup to reveal their thought of card and let them freak out!

This truly is one of the strongest effects in my repertoire. I only use it for special occasions when I want to really do something very special for people. At the risk of immodesty, I believe you have a reputation maker now. Run through it a few times, then work on your presentation and
make the effect you!

9. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

In my 40 plus years as a working pro, I've performed in almost every conceivable environment, from Close-up to Stage, Kids to Corporate, Parties, Conventions, Festivals and Trade Shows, for complete lay audiences to the Magic Castle, 4F and FISM. Over the years, the common denominators have become increasingly clear. On the performance side these are Attitude, Charisma and Enthusiasm (ACE). On the technical side, the importance of having a firm foundation in Sleight-of-Hand skills. What I find interesting is that many performers are generally lacking in these areas. Like building a house with a weak foundation, sooner or later, the structure will be undermined.

In our never ending quest for the latest and greatest tricks, we overlook the most important of all skills. To address this, my focus, with all my students, is, first and foremost, on a comprehensive system of prestidigitation. This includes right and left hand training with Coins, Balls, Cards, Rings, Spongeballs, Wand and Silks, as well as TT, Sanada and Dye Tube. And even before adding in any gimmicks, I focus on how much wonder and amazement one can get using a few simple objects. The example I often give is Slydini's Napkins in Hat routine. Even more advanced magicians are often challenged when I tell them to master basic sleights with both hands.

Most of us come into magic with self-working effects. As such, we are able to get maximum impact from minimal effort. Owing to this, many end up with unrealistic expectations. When faced with the need to practice a move hundreds, or even thousands, of times, they give up, because it's "Too hard". That's what I call the "Threshold of Failure". It's an imaginary point that limits our growth. We all know that to master any music instrument requires countless thousands of hours of diligent rehearsal. Only rarely do we see that same commitment in magic. One of the points I make to my students is the necessity of erasing that line. Put simply, it takes as long as it takes, be it 10 or 10,000 rehearsals.

This Saturday, I'm presenting a new ZoomStorming Masterclass focusing on fundamental Sleight-of-Hand skills. These include classic methods, from grandmasters such as Vernon, Slydini, Pollock, Thompson, Ross, Goshman and Page, fused with my own methods, psychology and techniques. The goal is to fuse the best from the past with the best of the present in a two hour, intensive training session. If you are interested in attending, it starts at 12pm LA time, 3pm NY and 8pm UK. As always, the ticket price includes the full recording as an HD Digital Download. Tickets and details are at www.MagicLadder.net (Formerly DeVille Magic)

In other news, last Saturday, I produced my second Magic Castle Virtual Show, with Co-Stars Greg Gleason and David Goldrake. These productions are now recognized as the world's premiere virtual shows. As such, we are always striving to raise the bar, and this show was no exception. In addition to the virtuoso Close-up, Parlour and Stage Magic, I added in the element of live music accompaniment. All of these ingredients made up a virtual banquet of magic, music and wonder, with classic effects, signature routines and even world premiere illusions. The response, from magicians and laypeople alike, was overwhelming, Jack Goldfinger called me after and admitted that it was the best so far and that he was completely baffled by many of the effects. In summing up his enthusiasm, he simply called it "Funtastic!"

The road goes ever onwards and upwards. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, we keep reaching higher, setting the standard for those who follow, and passing on all that we have learned to the next generation. So it has been for thousands of years. Each generation has the responsibility to the past, the present and the future of our Art. Excelsior!
