2. FISM Update - Hotels, Bed And Breakfasts, Air BNB Stays
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)

You most likely prefer to stay in the Delta which is the host hotel and close to the venue during FISM. However at the moment it is fully booked during the time of the event. You might like to stay in a more traditional Quebec venue.

There are several suggestions on the FISM website: www.FISMQuebec2021 (Don't let the date fool you.) By far my favorite hotel is La Capitale, a stone's throw from the wall. Its corridors are curved brick. The rooms are newly renovated but the building itself is classic. Unfortunately it's quite expensive. The Concord has a revolving dining room giving you a bird's eye view of the old city and the St. Lawrence River.

If you don't stay there, I'd suggest a meal in the restaurant. It's a real treat. There are 24 hotels mentioned on the FISM site, something for everyone. They fill up quickly during the summer months. Best to book now rather than wait if you want something to fit a budget. Hotels in Quebec City are generally expensive during the summer because it's such a popular tourist location.

The best deals are usually on the Air BnB website. There are over 300 listed in the Quebec City area, and several for under $200 that look wonderful. They too will book quickly in the summer, so if you're interested in a unique stay, go to the Air BnB site today. I've never been disappointed with the places I've stayed through them.

There are also many small hotels in the Old Quebec area.

Auberge Saint Louis, 48, rue Saint-Louis, starts at $99/night if you are willing to share a bathroom. The cost is $129 if you prefer a private bathroom.

Hotel Acadia, 43, rue Sainte-Ursule Old Québec. $198/night. Review: "Awesome! This was a very good hotel. Small, cozy rooms with great views of the busy streets of Old Quebec City. The location was unmatched from what I could see and friendly..."

The Château Frontenac (1 rue des Carrieres) is an historic landmark in Quebec.

It's a high-end hotel offering plush quarters, plus fine dining, a spa, a wine bar & river views.
Overlooking the St. Lawrence River, this grand, castle-like hotel is a 3-minute walk from Cathedral-Basilica of Notre-Dame de Québec and 8 minutes' walk from boutiques in Quartier Petit Champlain. However, as the saying goes, if you need to ask the price, you can't afford it.
It doesn't cost anything to walk around inside, and this you should do. It is the building that signifies Quebec City and deserves a look. ($647./night)

3. May Issue Genii Magazine

Message by Richard Kaufman - Editor Genii Magazine

Join us and get tens of thousands of pages for as little as $35 when you subscribe to Genii at www.geniimagazine.com. All back issues of Genii and MAGIC magazine are yours to read for free.

The Magic Castle has a new owner, and he's on the cover of the May issue. Read all about how Randy Pitchford became the Academy of Magical Arts' new landlord. Dr. Will Houstoun, Dr. Richard Wiseman, and David Britland tell us the story behind story decks (you know, routines like "Sam the Bellhop"). David Regal does some coin and do-it-yourself work in "Material Concessions," while Jim Steinmeyer gets poetic in "Conjuring." In "Dealing with It," John Bannon serves up a multi-effect showpiece with cards. Jon Racherbaumer unearths an almost self-working card trick in "Exhumations," and this month's "Magicana" has three items, including one that's guaranteed no FUSS.

It turns out that Hannibal wanted to play the guitar. Fortunately for us he plays a deck of cards far better; read about it in "Happiness is the Road." Krystyn Lambert shares a chance meeting with Paul Harris in "Stage as Studio." It's all about firsts in this month's "Knights at The Magic Castle" with Shawn McMaster. Vanessa Armstrong casts "The Eye" of Genii on magic's news. Finally, our reviewers in "Light from the Lamp" this month are Tom Frame with books, Brad Henderson on tricks, and Bill Wells discusses videos. We remember three fine men of magic in this issue: Pressley Guitar, Peter Galinskas, and David Goodsell. All that and more is on the inside.

In the meantime, the countdown to MAGIC Live is on. We hope to see you there.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #57

Message by Paul Stone (US)

I've always felt that it is very important that we don't forget the great names in magic that have gone before us, and that we continue to talk about them and, where possible, to celebrate their achievements.

So, it was a distinct pleasure to join and be a part of a special Zoom session remembering the magic legend that was Ken Brooke.

Hosted and produced by Nick Lewin, looking every bit the Grand Master, fresh from his acclaimed talk on Ken at Bill Smith's successful Collectors Magic Expo a couple of weeks ago in Austin, Texas, this event attracted over 100 Ken Brooke fans, each with their own very personal memories of this giant of magic.

Ken was of course, a wonderful performer, a highly skilled magician with an unrivalled flair for comedy, but most of those present at this session knew him better as one of the most influential dealers and demonstrators that the world of magic has ever seen.

You only need to know just some of the names that joined in this session to fully appreciate the level of affection and respect that they held for Ken.

They included Gaetan Bloom from France, Dick Koornwinder from Holland, Trevor Liley from UK, and Mike Caveney and Marc DeSouza to name a few.

Everyone had their own very personal memories of Ken, and what was particularly interesting was the fact that we all felt that Ken had a unique relationship with each of us.
Somehow he made us feel special, and he went out of his way to help, mentor or simply do something kind for us.

Many well-known magicians that frequented Ken Brooke's Magic Place in Wardour Street, in London's Soho, were talked about, Fred Kaps, Paul Daniels, Ricky Jay, Roy Johnson, Wayne Dobson and Tommy Cooper.

We also remembered Ken's business partner, Frank Farrow, without whom the 'Place' wouldn't have happened, and Jim Hooper, the incredible genius behind the scenes who came up with most of Ken's 'NEMO' effects.

Lots of stories about Ken's favorite pub, the Dog & Duck, and his favorite restaurant the Piccadilly Restaurant near to his studio, where many of us were lucky enough to spend countless hours in his company.

It was a brilliant session which lasted over two and a half hours, and which quite happily could have gone on for another few hours! Such was the love and lasting memories of a true magic icon.

Special thanks to Nick, who of course was one of Ken's Star pupils, and who Ken was always immensely proud of, for setting this up. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Fay Presto

With true star power the fabulous Fay Presto Female Magician on @BBC, BBC1 Wogan Talk show in 1986.

A young Fay Presto's excellent sleight of hand, close up and performance skills shine brightly in this first live televised interview and performance on BBC 1 - Wogan talk show with Terry Wogan on November 5th, 1986.

There is a back-story, the producers tried to derail Fay's performance on live TV, they changed her finish performance time twice during her set as she performed her magic. Fay adjusted admirably and no one could imagine the pressure she was under.

Many thanks to Fay Presto for this remarkable vintage video footage for our "Blast from the Past" playlist series on @Magical Women with Connie Boyd #BBC #femalemagician #FayPresto

As custodians of this Timeless Art, we are called upon to honour the past, celebrate the present and create the future. This week, we have been focused on all of these, through Shows, Mentoring, Memorials and Livestreams.

Our Top Story is the Key West Hybrid Konvention, just 2 weeks away! On May 14th & 15th we will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Frank's Magic Bar in Key West. This is, without question, one of the great success stories in the history of our Art. Couple that with the fact that Frank Everhart Sr. was one of the Chicago group that helped to establish the genre of Bar Magic 60 years ago. For this Live and Virtual Event, we have an All-Star lineup of Masters and Grandmasters. These include Michael Ammar, Doc Eason, Frank Everhart, Geno DeVille, Greg Otto, John Johnson and yours truly.

I am also pleased to introduce Austin Moody, one of the fastest rising stars around. Over the weekend, we will webcast exclusive Shows, Lectures, Masterclasses, Interviews and Discussions, many of which will never be repeated. These include a one-off Eason/Ammar/Everhart/DeVille Show and Masterclass on 'Sam the Bellhop" and the first ever Ammar/Berry Topit Masterclass! With 10 Main Events, the stage is set for an epic weekend of wonder. And, the best part is that the Registration, whether you attend live or not, includes all of the recordings as Digital Downloads. Enter this coupon code at the checkout for 20% off the already low price: Coupon Code = Kon20OFF www.DeVilleMagic.net

Speaking of Mr. Deville, GenoMania episode 26 streamed across FB to attendees from around the globe. His tech tips included a number of practical suggestions and adaptations on well-known gimmicks. He then showed a definitive performance of McDonalds Aces by Jorg Alexander. As always, this was discussed in depth with the online attendees. We wrapped with What Gets Your Goat? This week was my turn to suggest the topic and I focused my rant on the general disrespect we see across the Social Media groups towards well established pros like David Blaine. In our 10 minute discussion, we discussed Blaine's place in magic history, his new Masterclass and just-announced residency in Las Vegas. The upshot was that, whether one likes or dislikes the style, Blaine has earned, and therefore deserves, our respect.

On the ZoomStorming front, last Saturday marked the 8th Masterclass in the Intensive Training Series. I pulled out all the stops to pack the 2 hour session with as much details and instruction on the Topit. This included the history, right up to my most recent innovations on the Shirt Topit System. There are already a number of requests to repeat the Series, so we are looking at the possibility of doing those over the next few months, in partnership with The Magic Castle.

Finally, on the immediate horizon is a mini Masterclass focusing on the Sanada Gimmick. This will be an S.A.M. presentation via the V1.1 Virtual Assembly. I was honoured to be asked by past president Joel Zaritsky to present this on May 8th at 4pm NY Time. Entrance is free to all S.A.M. Members. For more info, please visit www.facebook.com/assemblyv11

How To Get Booked At Magic Conventions Or Magic Venues

Currently I have the honor of serving as the President of the Texas Association of Magicians. My primary duty is to organize the TAOM convention which happens every year in a different Texas city. As the convention approaches, I am contacted by potential acts.

Getting booked for a magic convention or a magic venue (MCMV) need not be a mysterious process. Allow me to shed some light on the MCMV markets.

Working MCMVs come with perks. You get to attend the magic convention or venue and you also get to network with other bookers who may also be there. BUT BE WARNED: Despite how prestigious it can look to appear at an MCMV, these gigs don't usually pay much. If you're a paid professional, then know that MCMVs should be considered as supplemental gigs only. Even your most famous performance venues tend to not pay that much money. You cannot make a magic career solely out of doing MCMVs. If you're still interested in these gigs, read on.

Make Yourself Useful And Known To The Right People This is the hardest step in getting booked at MCMVs. MCMVs are looking for sure-fire talent that they can hire at a reasonable price that will encourage more paying customers (convention registrants and venue customers). If you're an unknown act, regardless of how good you are, you're less likely to get booked at an MCMV. You have to make yourself KNOWN in the magic world.

Every MCMV has a single person you want to convince to hire you whether it's the Castle, the IBM convention or whatever. Who are these people? You'll have to research those individuals yourself. It wouldn't be professional for me to list any names here. These bookers are real-life human beings; many of which do magic for pay, just like yourself. Once you assemble your list of potential bookers…

(2) Be Useful. Help these producers bring in more customers or registrants and they will probably book you. You need to be known in the magic community a little bit before pitching yourself to these bookers. The best way to make yourself known to these people is to network with your local magic clubs, in your local magic shop, and enter as many magic contests as you can.

Make yourself useful and known in the art of magic. If bookers know that you're already involved in advancing the art of magic, then they are more likely to book you. Do you volunteer your time at your local magic club? Have you served as an officer of a magic organization? Showing MCMV bookers that you care about the growth of the art of magic beyond your own paycheck and fame is a MUST.

(3) Have An Amazing Product for the MCMV to use. Have a great act that's original and fun. If your act sucks, don't expect to be booked. Make sure that other people think your act is good before approaching a booker. Again, did I mention magic contests?

How much should you charge? Obviously, you want to get paid for your work; but the harsh reality is that when you go off and work an MCMV you could have just as easily stayed home and worked a couple of local family and made just as much money. Magicians who reach out to me are often shocked when I tell them that I'm USUALLY looking for an act in the $500-$1200 range. Even if I offer to offset some travel expenses, this is often too little money for some acts to travel to work my events. Again, I stress that you can't get rich on MCMVs.

Let's face it, finding a selected card taken from a deck is strong. But locating a card that is merely thought of by a participant really does up the ante. There's simply nowhere for them to go, and presented and acted out correctly can come very close to real mind reading. Using a couple of classical gambits and a beautiful concept of my insanely talented friend, Michael Murray, I am very proud of the following.

Whenever you wish to segue into this piece simply manage any ten spot to the bottom of the deck. "Let's try something now with a piece of your mind. I will have you think of a card under test conditions. First off, think of a number between one and ten. Next think of a card suit. Now combine those two thoughts to form a playing card that merely resides in your mind. So if you thought of two and Spades your card would be the Two of Spades, right?"

So this opening interaction gets them to think of a card in a very fair and interesting fashion. You genuinely don't know what they are thinking of, which is what makes this super strong. We will now indulge in two classical ambiguous Mentalism strategies to unlock the door to their thought. "Be honest, you're not thinking of a red card, are you?" If they say yes you respond "I thought so." However, if they say they are not, your response is "I didn't think so." Let's say for teaching purposes that they are indeed thinking of a red card.

We will now utilize what's become known as the repeater ploy, a brilliant idea of Jerry Sadowitz, popularized by the great Derren Brown. "Focus on the suit of your card for me and look at me and say it over and over in your mind, like Diamonds, Diamonds, Diamonds yes?" If you get a smile or positive visual or audible response then you know they are thinking of a Diamond. If however you get no response at all their card must be a

Heart, in our teaching example. Be very casual and liberated as you use this beautiful ploy. We shall say that they are thinking of a Diamond. So with hardly any effort we are one step away from discerning their genuinely thought of card. "Finally please focus on the number or value
of your card. I will attempt to cut to that number with the deck here." Pick up the deck and execute any deceptive false cut and table the deck. Pick up the deck from above with your palm-down right hand and look away as you raise the face of the deck towards your participant, showing a ten spot. "Did I get close?" Allow them to reply.

Now for the golden question: "How many was I off by?" If they say by three you now know their card is the Seven of Diamonds. If they say off by Five you would then know their thought of card is the Five of Diamonds. This is an application of Michael Murray's brilliant Springboard concept from his book A Piece Of My Mind. It's truly a thing of beauty. Cut the deck and complete the cut, losing the ten spot.

Let's say that they say you were off by three. Pick up the deck and spread the cards with the faces towards you. Feign concentration and then extract the Seven of Diamonds. Have your participant name the card they merely thought of and a moment later finish the mystery in style.

Even though it's taken quite an extensive write up, in practice, the effect is very straightforward and performed confidently extremely powerful. Never perform this as an opening effect. Establish a connection and empathy with your audience first and don't present this as a challenge effect.

I wish you every success with it!
