2. "Re-Visiting Ken Brooke." A Free Zoom Seminar
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nick Lewin (US)

Our company Lewin Enterprises gave a series of Zoom seminars for our VIP Clients last year as one of attempts to beat the pandemic blues. These seminars included deep dives into performers like Fred Kaps and Billy McComb and were a bunch of fun as well as being incredibly instructive.

Well, COVID hasn't totally gone away, and more importantly our VIP client list has been quite vocal about missing these free Zoom sessions, so we are beginning a new series and kicking of with a seminar on the great Ken Brooke. I am very excited about this event as Ken was my first mentor in magic. Last week I lectured on Ken at The Magic Collectors Expo here in America.

Slated to join me and add their stories and insight into Ken are, Gaetan Bloom, Mike Caveney, Robert Swadling, Paul Stone, Trevor Lilely, and Mark DeSouza. It should be a fascinating and unique event. There will be video of Ken, unique photos, and a bunch of surprises to enrich things.

Until now we have limited to seminars to 100 people, but interest in this event was so great that we have upped the attendance substantially and are offering it to the general magic community. We still have openings for new attendees to register for the event which takes place live at 2:00 pm Eastern Standard Time on Sunday the 24th of April.

If you know you can attend, I invite you to register at the link below and join us on Sunday. Please don't register unless you really plan to be there because space is limited, and the attendance number will be cut off at 300 registrations. However, if you are interested about knowing a little more about this legendary magical figure, I know you will be excited about our Zoom seminar!

To Register for the event, go to

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Last week we attended and reported on the three day convention, Magic Collectors Expo 2022 from Austin, Texas. It was a very relaxed, educational and fun event with about 165 registrants. We visited the Houdini collection in the Ransom Center (part of the University of Texas library system) then attended Esther's Follies featuring magician, Ray Anderson. And that was just the first day! You can download and listen wherever you get your podcasts. But to listen to the three separate convention reports through the website, please follow these links:

Day One: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/673-magic-collectors-expo-2022-day-one

Day Two: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/674-magic-collectors-expo-2022-day-two

Day Three: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/675-magic-collectors-expo-2022-day-three

This week we present an episode that was recently recorded with Ed Alonzo in the Magic Castle library. He has had a fascinating and successful career and he's far from finished. A member of the fabled Long Beach Mystics, he was also part of the Magic Castle juniors. He later parlayed his love for theater to becoming an actor and landed a recurring role in "Saved By The Bell" which was a long running television series in the U.S. He then traveled with Britney Spears on her worldwide tour and was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the Academy of Magical Arts. You can hear this week's episode plus see some videos and candid photos plus get links to some of the things discussed in the podcast at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/676-ed-alonzo

Next week's episode will be delayed until after the virtual 4F Convention which will be held on Saturday April 30th. So come back after that has been posted for the one day convention report.

4. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #56
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

News is starting to trickle out about another eagerly anticipated show here on the Las Vegas Strip. It will be at the Wynn Hotel & Casino and will replace the long running Le Reve.

The name of the show hasn't as yet been released, but what I can tell you is that it will be a huge production.

My sources tell me that it is costing a fortune and that many of the tech crew used to work on Siegfried & Roy's spectacular show at the Mirage Hotel & Casino.

Whilst so far, the Producers have kept details of the show close to their chests, I understand that magic will play a big part in the show, and it was no surprise to hear that Paul Kieve is heavily involved. Paul rightly enjoys an impressive reputation having worked on numerous 'live' stage shows and of course the incredibly successful Harry Potter movies.

Also just announced is that Paul Dabek from UK will be featured in the show. Paul is a very talented performer, and is someone whose career I have followed for a few years, and I'm delighted that he will have this exciting opportunity in Las Vegas. I'm really looking forward to seeing the end product, it should be a fantastic show.

Although my magic dealing days are well behind me, I've recently been scouring through some of the original effects that I released under both the banners of the Unique Magic Collection and also Corporate Magic International, and I'd forgotten how commercial some of these were.

I normally deliberately only released a limited number of each effect and so they haven't been available for quite some time. I mention this because it looks like they could well be available again soon.

No, I'm not becoming a magic dealer again, as I'm now fully involved with a new Charity initiative I'm launching, but another established dealer is keen to add them to their range, so hopefully it will work out well. I'll keep you posted!

7. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

Tennis great, Arthur Ash, famously said, "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." This has become my catch phrase as of late, to students, colleagues, fans and friends. It communicates a powerful, motivational message, in so few words. And, as often as I say it, I also apply it, to Art and Life.

Our top story this week is the 25th episode of GenoMania! Since early September, we've streamed this show via Zoom across Facebook. It's always a bit zany and irreverent, but also inspirational and informative. With avid attendees from around the world, Geno gave a mini masterclass on the classic Topsy Turvy Plumes, showing one of his hilarious live performances from a festival in China. We then discussed, in depth, the psychology and pitfalls of "Do as I do" effects.

He then taught how to inexpensively make the props and plumes, using materials from a craft shop and hardware store. Our "What Gets Your Goat?" section returned to a regular theme on the overblown egos, petty infighting and general disrespect so often seen in FB Magic Groups. To me, it's incomprehensible why so many waste so much time and energy on such trivial matters. As always, though, we ended on a high note, celebrating the first 25 episodes, while looking forward to the next 25.

In last weekend's ZoomStorming Masterclass, I focused on The Cloaking Device and FS/2 Gimmicks. It was a full on, 2 hours of intensive training, covering preparation and basic handling to effects and routines. I even revealed my top secret Locking FS/2 Gimmick. Our focus this weekend is the Topit. We will journey into the history and mystery of this most extraordinary of utility devices. I will bust the myth that one requires a jacket, by showing my universal Shirt Topit design, which adapts to tails, vests and even hoodies. Naturally, I will perform and teach a wide range of effects and practical uses.

On the Mentoring side, I'm giving up to 4 Private Sessions per day, to students around the globe. The Zoom Medium works so well for these 60 - 90 minute classes. I'm currently coaching men and women, young and old, beginners and masters, most of whom I've never actually met. And, then they keep the recording. What an amazing way to inspire others while passing on the ancient Art of Wonder. Such is the new normal!

And finally, with live shows coming back, many are in need of new, state-of-the-art, websites, which is a service I provide to students and colleagues. I'm currently designing up to 3 a week, with custom graphics and videos, to suit the client's needs. Again, these are for magicians around the globe.

August 10-13, 2022 Chattanooga, Tennessee
The Adventure Unfolds: KIDabra Reunited

First The Stunning Backstory
The year was 1968 and the occasion was the 40th gathering of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. The convention met at the Read House Hotel in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee. (Which operates to this day)
Special guests Edwin Hooper and Ian Adair of Supreme Magic had traveled from England as honored guests. For the first time in person there, they met Karrell Fox, David Ginn, Duke Stern, and Warren Stephens. This would create lifelong friendships and business relations with all. Arguably, it was a powerhouse confluence that would firmly cement an international kid show movement for years to come. One could say the path to KIDabra began there.

It seems only fitting that over half a century later we revisit this storied ground to begin the next chapter of KIDabra Reunited!

The Amazing KIDabra 2022 Roster continues to develop and confirmed so far are: The First In Person Appearance at KIDabra of Jef Eaton/Kandu Magic, and Chef Bananas aka Chad Jacobs, The Foundational Staff of Barry Mitchell, Ken Scott, Duane Laflin, Christopher T. Magician, Buster Balloon, Annie Banannie, Chris Weed, Gary Shelton, Tim Gaines, and The New Voices of Christine Pynn, Fernando Alvarez, and Ryan Mercy. Plus your hosts - Mark and Tami Daniel, with many more to come!

Travel to the Hotel from the Chattanooga Airport: Uber or Taxi is only about $10.00.

If driving, the Embassy Suites is located at I-75 and Shallowford Rd., 13 miles east of downtown Chattanooga and across from the Hamilton Place Mall with mind boggling shopping and restaurants all around. Plus within 15 minutes of the hotel is Downtown Chattanooga with one of the top Aquariums in the US, the World Famous Chattanooga Choo Choo, hip shops, mini breweries, art district, and walking and water activities galore. 9. Sleightless CTB - John Carey #158
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

Sleightless is my entry into the 'Card to Card Box' genre of effect. A freely named card teleports to the box in a very sneaky fashion. Set the two Jokers on top of the face-down deck and close the halfmoon flap under the top Joker and you're ready to work.

Take out the box and remove the cards, secretly leaving the top Joker behind. Set the box aside, mouth down and have the deck shuffled. Now perform a couple of your favourite card effects before going into this. "Shannon, I'm just curious, before we go any further. If I was to ask you
to name a card, you might say? The Three of Clubs isn't very common. But do you know the cards people never name? The Jokers!

I guess it's because they don't have any definitive value. Let's remove them before we try something else." So during the above verbiage spread through the cards with the faces of the cards towards you and upjog the Joker and the Three of Clubs, in this example. Table the deck and execute a quick and casual flushtration display, showing two Jokers. You may need to switch the two cards you remove from the deck so that the Joker is the face card of the pair. Put the two cards away in the box as you ask your helper to shuffle the deck.

Then get your spectator to table the deck and cover it with either hand. "A few moments ago you named any card right? A free choice too yes? Watch as I wave my hand and your card jumps to the top of the deck under your hand. Now take a look?" They do and it's not their card. "Ah
maybe it got confused and sunk to the bottom?" Once again, no joy. "No problem, as I can tell you right now that the card you named is in the middle!"

This gets a laugh and or a groan. Ask your helper to spread the deck face-up and remove the card they simply named. Of course, they won't find it. "Maybe it got tired and went home." Look over towards the card box and pick it up. Open it and remove the three face-down cards inside.

Turn the top and bottom cards of this packet face-up, showing a sandwich of two Jokers and a face-down card. Slowly extract that card, turn it over and reveal their freely named selection. I don't consider the Flushtration display or count as really a move. More a movement. Anyways it's so simple, especially with just two cards.

When you ask your participant to name any card, be casual as if you're just curious and not actually in performance mode. Be relaxed as you apparently remove then display the Jokers. The rest of the presentation is all about time misdirection before revealing the final translocation.
