Plains of Abraham, Quebec City: A short history
The Plains of Abraham is an historic area within the Battlefields Park in Quebec City. The land is the site of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, which took place on September 13, 1759. Later, hundreds of acres of the fields became used for grazing, housing, and minor industrial structures. However, in 1908 the land was ceded to Quebec City, and administered by the federally-run National Battlefields Commission. The park today is used by 4 million visitors and tourists annually for sports, relaxation, outdoor concerts, and festivals.

The Plains were likely named after Abraham Martin (1589-1664), a fisherman and river pilot nicknamed The Scot. Martin moved to Quebec City in 1635 with his wife Marguerite and received 32 acres of land.

The park itself presently occupies an area approximately 2.4 km (1.5 mi) long by 0.8 km (0.5 mi) wide, (242 acres) that extend westward from the Citadelle of Quebec and the walls of Quebec City along a plateau above the Saint Lawrence River, and forms a part of The Battlefields Park. Walking trails have been built on the site, as well as monuments to commemorate the Battle of Sainte-Foy and James Wolfe, the latter marker raised in 1790 on the site where Wolfe was said to have died.

After World War 1, the National Battlefields Commission placed a column identical to one that had been built on the site in 1849 to commemorate soldiers who were lost in that war. It continues to be the location of Remembrance Day ceremonies every year.

Message by Paul Romhany - Editor Vanish Magazine

A very special double feature for February with Eric DeCamps and Celeste DeCamps on the covers. David Regal interviews Eric about his one-man show and his career in magic. We get to know Eric's wife Celeste who also has a passion for dance, music, and has been around magic for a very long time.

2021 will forever be the year that rocked the magic communities' perceptions of early Las Vegas magicians. It began with factual findings that Lance Rich found and documented while investigating the question; "who was the first magician to play in a Las Vegas Hotel and Casino"? The "El Rancho Hotel & Casino" debuted on the Las Vegas Strip and was the first gaming establishment to book a magician, in May 1941. At the same time Lance was researching this AnnaRose made an incredible discovery that lead them both down the same path. This is a remarkable story and exclusive AnnaRose story for Vanish.

Nick Lewin shares his Valentine Day Awards - find out who the winners were for 2021.

Product Highlights - lots of great reviews plus three incredible product highlights. "Rosen Roy Martini Glass," "Spider Pen X and Salted 2.0. Be sure to check out the video reviews that go with these highlights as well.

Family magicians will enjoy Christopher T. Magicians article on Reactions

Magic Tricks: Cards Across, Elephant in A Box, Triumphant Flip Off, and River Gambler Routine.

Message by Stan Allen (USA)

A few hours ago, we launched a countdown with just 125 registrations left to MAGIC Live! That number is probably outdated already. (To see the up-to-the-minute countdown, visit the link below.)

While 125 may sound like a lot, we started with 1,600 spots. And now, 93% of them are gone.

If you're thinking about attending, please don't delay. Sign up today, and join your friends at The Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, May 15-18, 2022.

Surprises await!

7. Broken Wand - Andrew Gressett
--------------------------------------------
Message by Steve Schlanger (US)

So sorry to report the passing of Andrew Gressett.

He was born and raised in New Orleans and was a longtime member of the local SAM and IBM rings. He was successful at everything that he did, business, magic, and most importantly his devotion to his wife and son. He regularly came out to Los Angeles to attend The Oscars or the Golden Globe awards.

During these trips he would always visit Owens Magic Supreme, arriving with a king cake to share with his friends and the employees who worked there. He also attended many magic conventions, where you would talk shop, and look for items to add to his magic collection.

Joe Harrisson a lifelong friend conducted the broken wand ceremony at his memorial. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Aloha Andrew, until we meet again.

Meet Paige Thompson

Fans of Penn & Teller's Fool Us program recently saw Paige Thompson make an appearance. Paige is one of our most talented performers at the Lounge and can been seen there 6 nights a week. She has worked the main stage in the Blackstone Cabaret, the 654 Club and regularly works the tables before the show.

Paige started in magic early, when her Grandmother gave her a magic set at 6 years old. She was at first disappointed there were no magic spells in the set and she put it aside for a couple of years. Around 8 she began to learn the tricks in the set, and seeing the interest Grandma began to give her more props and effects. Her first paid show was at age 12 for an 11 year old neighbor's birthday, which was booked by her first agent, Grandma!! She was a big supporter of Paige's career and had signs made for her car advertising Paige's magic.

In her teens she began competing and winning magic contests in Northern California and San Francisco, and went to Las Vegas to compete, without winning but taking 2nd place. Along the way she met Dan Sperry and when Dan was moving to Las Vegas he asked Paige to be roommates and work with him in his act. As many have learned, success in Vegas is not guaranteed, so she took a gig in Branson Missouri. "3 producers came through that theater, and they all stopped paying" said Paige. Success in Branson is not guaranteed either.

She continued working with Dan, including tours in Germany. "He was a rock star there, we got off the plane and people were calling out his name in the airport" Paige recalled. (I wonder how they recognized him?) In 2017 she was ready to try a new city and came to Chicago.

She learned about a new magic venue called the Chicago Magic Lounge and got booked as a walk around entertainer just before we closed our original venue to reopen in our current space. Around this time she went to Magic Inc in search of a sub trunk. She didn't buy the trunk they had, but she did meet Luis Carreon (featured here last week) and the two became a couple.

In addition to P&T's "Fool Us" Paige has been featured 3 times on "Masters of Illusion" as well as "Showtime at the Apollo" with Steve Harvey, where she received a standing ovation, no easy task. She continues to fool and amaze weekly at the Chicago Magic Lounge, where she was recently voted by her coworkers "Best Dressed Magician" at the Lounge! Make sure to say hello to Paige and visit PaigesMagic.com

Next week- A _ walks into our bar………..

#Magical-Women Sequel 3, thanks to the research & discoveries made by Lance Rich and Anna Rose Einarsen, Gloria Dea attends @TheDavidCopperfield1's show at the MGM Hotel & Casino in #LasVegas. Incredibly Gloria was 99 years old at the time!

Gloria Dea was the first magician ever to appear in a Las Vegas at a casino venue in 1941. The venue was the El Rancho, the first hotel & casino to be built on the Las Vegas Strip. The same year Gloria debuted as the first magician to star in Las Vegas she also began her acting career.

Her biggest acting success was co-starring with Buster Crabbe in "the King of the Congo" serial series. In this third talk AnnaRose describes the friendship and collaborative adventure she, Lance Rich & David Copperfield have enjoyed to discover Gloria. Lance Rich describes his experience at David's show with Gloria.

It's a true story of newfound, magical friendship that reads like a fictional romance & fantasy.

10. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

All magicians everywhere share one thing in common: We all had that moment, sometime in our lives, when we fell in love with magic. The spark that became a flame, is the shared experience that binds us together, across space and time. Those who reach the highest peaks of the art, the dreamers, creators and trailblazers, are the ones who keep that fire burning in their heart. And that thought set the tone for this entire week at the Academy and Abra.tv News.

Our top story is the world premiere of "Spotlight On". This one hour, multimedia program streamed live across Facebook, featuring one of the greatest magic creators and illusionists of all time, Franz Harary. In a revealing and often surprising interview, he and I discussed his extraordinary life in magic and the unique mindset of an artist, pioneer and trailblazer. In a relaxed and casual manner he talked about growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, creating illusions for Michael Jackson and Alice Cooper, on to starring in multi-million dollar shows around the world. The interview is up to watch on the FB Pages only for the next few days. My next guest, on February 8th, is the incomparable Vegas headliner, David Goldrake.

On Saturday's Abra.tv News, we celebrated the one year anniversary of "Late Night Magic" in Las Vegas. Produced by Doug Leferovich and Michael Mayfield, this offbeat show stars Rudy Coby, Mondre, AnnaRose, Bizarro, John Shaw, Kim Steel and the comedy antics of Lefty. From there, we took a look back at the 93rd S.A.M. Convention, with an exclusive memorial video.

Our next stop was jolly old England, where Romany gave a full report on the many shows that are up and running across the UK. She topped it all off by interviewing Irish magician and Blackpool Convention star, Nikola Arkane. As if that wasn't enough, Nikola added the icing on the cake, closing with a wondrous performance. That makes five weekly Newscasts that are all available to watch on our Facebook Pages and at www.Abra.tv

There is no resting on our laurels, however. This weekend's news is in production and will feature a preview of The Magic Castle Founder's Day, The Super Magic Festival in Italy plus an exclusive interview with Grandmaster and FISM Award Winner, Marc Oberon.

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #47

Message by Paul Stone (US)

Last year I produced a limited edition set of Martin Lewis's Sidewalk Shuffle cards to commemorate what would have been the legendary British magician and renowned magic dealer Ken Brooke's 100th Birthday.

There were only 100 sets made, with a custom KB 100 back design and each one with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, and a large poster of Ken Brooke.

Sidewalk Shuffle is a really strong parlour and cabaret effect and it is also a perfect trick to perform for zoom shows too. In my opinion, it is by far the most commercial version of 'Chase the Ace'.

As I have mentioned in my previous articles, I will be attending the Blackpool Convention and, apart from hosting two events featuring Lynette Chappell, Siegfried & Roy's leading lady and 'Evil Queen', I will also be presenting a Workshop on the 'Nemo Jumbo Rising Cards'.

I will also try to spend a few minutes on Sidewalk Shuffle too, and I will have a few of the special Ken Brooke, KB 100 sets available to buy. And for anyone attending my workshop, instead of the regular price of 75 GB pounds, they will be just 20 GB pounds! They will be sold on a first come, first served basis, until they run out, and they will ONLY be available at my workshop.

My other news this week is that I will be moving from Las Vegas and relocating. I'm not revealing where to just yet!

It's amazing how much 'stuff' we all accumulate, and I've decided that it's time to downsize, so I'll be selling off various magic memorabilia, including signed posters, books and other collectibles that I've acquired over the last 40 years or so.

I will have a couple of unique collectible Fred Kaps and Lance Burton items with me at the Blackpool Convention as well as some one-off Siegfried & Roy memorabilia, so if you plan to be there, come and check them out.

I will be putting together a full list of items after I return from Blackpool. If you are interested, email me at qualityevents@aol.com

12. Streamlined Pin Crack - John Carey #149
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

Here is my variation on the modern classic PIN divination so popular these days with mentalists. This version was inspired by a super version I read in an ebook called Impromptu Pin Guess by Abhirup Roy from Penguin Magic.

In his version you got the possible PINs created by a participant down to four and then fished twice to bring the effect to a successful conclusion. After a day or two of thought and experimentation I realized I could get the possible PINs down to just two and only have to ask one question and I could bring the effect home strongly.

All you require here is a business card, a pen, and of course a willing participant! Bring out the materials and table them.

"Shannon, numbers are truly all around us. There's door numbers, phone numbers, lotto numbers and of course PIN numbers we use to protect our bank account card. Today I would like you to create a random fantasy PIN number. Please take the business card and pen. First of all just think of a number between one and five, like four, but don't think of that as everyone here will swear I've influenced you!"

This subtly limits them to two or three as the range is between one and five. I ask my helper to write their number on the business card after I turn away. Next I ask them to add one to their first digit and write that new digit formed in their mind next to their first number. Once they have done that I ask them to add two to their second digit and write that new number next to the first two digits. Finally, I instruct them to add three to their third random digit to form the final number of their pin, which I once more request they write down. Before turning back around I ask my helper to remember the pin they formed merely in their mind and hold the business
card between their palms, thus hiding their writing.

Believe it or not the only two possible PIN numbers they can create are:

2358
3469

I now use a time honored ploy to get the piece of information I require to successfully complete the routine: "Imagine seeing the PIN number you have just created on that wall over there, big and bold. Focus on just the first digit. You're not thinking of an odd number, are you?" If they say yes I nod in satisfaction and now know their pin is 3469. However, if they say no, I simply reply: "I didn't think so." So in that scenario I would know that their PIN number is 2358.

All that's left to do is reveal their PIN number. But don't rush it or throw it away. Do it in stages, make out as if you are unsure and build some theatre and drama into it, before finally cracking their PIN number! One thing that's important is to immediately segue into another effect,
which will jam their thought processes and stop them trying any reengineering. Thank you to Mr Roy for inspiring my variation. A true AAA piece of Mentalism!

13. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

"Hello mate, G'day, Howzit goin" I replied, more than a little edgy I might casually warble - I was fully expecting a 'Mike Tyson' job on my ear! Hanging onto the ladder, I gradually descended through the tree branches, feeling a little bit like 'Long John Silver'! All the while, I 'chatted' away to the oversized cockatoo - which was quite happy, to all intents and
purposes, to sit balanced on my left shoulder. Reaching the ground, I walked very slowly out of my neighbour's gate, down the footpath and into our front yard.

Veronica in the meantime had raced ahead and opened the front door. As I climbed up the short flight of steps and onto the veranda, I fully expected the cockatoo to take off, but no, he
just sat there on my shoulder, obviously quite at ease as I entered the house, as if it was the most natural thing in the world to do. It was quite apparent that this cockatoo was very tame and had escaped from its owners. 'Aussie', our pink cockatoo, was outside sitting in the tree, so the 'cocky' stand was free; I lowered myself down so the that the cockatoo was level with it - he stepped off my shoulder and perched himself onto it, then walked along to one end and got stuck into the sunflower seed -evidently he hadn't eaten for quite a while.

For those of you who are unaware of what a cocky stand is, I try to will describe it. You have a large rectangular tray made out of aluminium (the whole stand is aluminium - less weight), that
sits on the floor; it has a hollow pipe attached to the centre of it, that rises up to about a height of about four feet, to which another hollow pipe, centred and horizontal to the floor - is soldered. At each end are two aluminium dishes; one holds water and the other, birdseed. All cockatoos throw birdseed all over the place as they eat - the trays' supposed to capture most of it Yeah, right!

In spite of placing an advertisement in the local newspaper - nobody ever rang or contacted the paper to claim him. We now found ourselves with two cockatoos - 'Aussie' the Pink cockatoo,
and now a magnificent Sulphur-Crested cockatoo; I named him 'Big Bird' because of his larger than average size. Veronica called him 'Big Bastard Bird' as he took an instant dislike to her, especially when she was wearing her glasses, and she still has the scars to prove it! He preferred men to women; birds are like that for some reason, showing a preference to one human partner
from the other.

Veronica and 'BBB' as she called him, came to an amicable agreement in the end - she stayed well away from him, and he only bit her when she had to walk past the cocky stand - although
Veronica remembers an instance, shortly after he'd arrived, when I had the cocky stand, complete with Big Bird, at the doorway into the kitchen. Veronica was doing the dishes, when she heard a
human voice, with an impeccable English accent, say; "What are you doing?" She began to answer, "Just washing the dishes" looked round and there was BBB, leaning precariously around from his stand, trying to see what was Veronica was up to. He was so damn intelligent and curious (like all cockatoos) - he once took a friend's typewriter to pieces, screw by screw, when he offered to look after the birds while we were on a tour. When I was away for a month performing in Darwin, which is right up at the top end of Australia (can't remember why Veronica wasn't with me), I received a three-page letter from Veronica, most of which was about Big Bird and the shenanigans he got up to while I was away!

By now it must be quite apparent to all, or at least to those of you who have enjoyed my on-going narrative about our cockatoos and parrots; that they played a big part in our lives during our nine, going on for ten years, in Australia. We finished up with six cockatoos and one parrot, apart from two poodles and two Siamese cats! There was 'Aussie' and 'Big Bird', whom you have
already 'met' (I'm not counting the first sulphur crested cockatoo we bought from the unscrupulous market dealer), then there was 'Little bird', 'Beauregarde',' Jackie', 'Tutu' - a
'Peach Faced' parrot, and another sulphur-crested cockatoo. Then there was 'Misky', a toy poodle, 'Shannon' a standard poodle and, not forgetting 'Sheba' our Siamese and later, her son 'Spook-Easy'.

There are a few (?) more stories to tell, about each of them. Veronica said, "Don't you think that folk might be getting a little jaded with all this burble about our birds?" "Maybe" I replied, "but they were a big part of our lives. C'mon, I am writing about MY, OUR life story, in which our pets have always been a major part. I want to get everything down on paper, while we can still remember incidents and things - before it is too late! Not just for the thousands of magicians who are reading this (courtesy of Alan Watson's 'Magic New Zealand' e-Zine), BUT FOR OUR OWN RESPECTIVE FAMILIES (and friends) AS WELL". So, on the stories go - with all the little details. Am I sorry about that? Nah!

To be continued.
