2. Genii's 85th volume - January 2022
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman (USA)

Join us for as little as $35 a year at www.geniimagazine.com and get digital access to every issue of both Genii and MAGIC ever published.

Happy (almost) New Year! The January 2022 issue marks the beginning of Genii's 85th volume. A phenomenal magician is featured on the cover; Gabi Pareras. Relatively few Americans knew of him, and sadly he passed away at age 55 before more could learn what a tremendous magician he was. Besides his thoughts, brought to you by Roberto Mansilla, we have three of Gabi's marvelous effects along with this introduction to this Spanish master.

Also appearing is Part 1 of John Gaspard's short story, "The Self-Working Trick"-an Eli Marks mystery. (Part 2, and "who done it," will be revealed next month.)

Jon Racherbaumer digs up a couple of Magic Square bits from Harry "The Hat" Anderson in "Exhumations".

David Regal teaches a card control in "Material Concessions," and John Bannon offers up a colorful card trick in "Dealing with It." Hannibal's "Happiness is the Road" stays close to home and introduces us to an incredible artist at The Magic Castle.

Jim Steinmeyer's "Conjuring" will have you playing with puzzles, and in "Stage as Studio" Krystyn Lambert might have you considering your next purchase a bit more thoughtfully.

Shawn McMaster looks into, and back at, what's happening at The Magic Castle, and Vanessa Armstrong delivers the news in "The Eye".

Reviewing products this month are Brad Henderson (tricks), Tom Frame (books), and Bill Wells (video), and, as usual, Jonathan Friedman brings us three fine routines in this month's "Magicana".

3. MAGIC Live & Surprise!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Stan Allen (USA)

As of today, we're five months away from kicking off MAGIC Live! When we gather on May 15th for our Welcome Party, it will have been 1,010 days since we were last "Live!" And if you're counting - and we are - that's a little over 24,000 hours and just shy 1.5 million minutes!

If I may take one or two of those minutes, I'd like to talk about...

Surprise!

Research has shown that the most important thing people look for in a magic show is surprise. We've always known the power of surprise at MAGIC Live, which is why we do not announce presenters or performers prior to the event.

When checking in at the convention, registrants receive a guidebook that lists who the speakers are, what they're speaking on, and when. That way, everyone can plan their days.

The nights, however, are for shows - five shows to be exact! As with all magic shows, these will strive to surprise you, not only with who's on, but also what they're doing.

Each year, we hear from attendees that MAGIC Live makes them feel like they're a kid at their first convention. I think that's largely due to the element of surprise. I remember going to the conventions of my youth and being surprised, over and over again. It was quite a feeling.

So, at MAGIC Live, we will continue to guard those surprises, hopefully, helping you feel a bit like a kid again.

I hope that you and yours are enjoying a safe and wonderful holiday season. And I hope to see you May 15-18 in Las Vegas.

Surprises await!

Stan

Chicago Magic Lounge
ChicagoMagicLounge.com

Happy New Year from Chicago - It's been a busy holiday season at the Chicago Magic Lounge, with parties, groups and families from around the country and across the globe visiting our many sold out shows in December. Nick Diffatte finished his Artist in Residence run, this month we welcome Kayla Drescher for an extended run.

This amazing place was brought forth by the vision, work and dreams of Joseph Cranford. Joey hails from Conroe Texas and comes from a background in theater and more specifically comedy improvisation. Joey made stops in Austin Texas and LA before coming to Chicago in 2002 to pursue his craft.

Training with Second City and The Annoyance Theater led to gigs touring the US on the college circuit with an improv show. "It was 5 guys driving around the country in a van for 2 ½ years" he recalls. This was followed by another 2 ½ years touring industrial shows for Ford Motor Company. With Chicago as his home he did theater, TV and film work.

Joey has never been known to be short on words, making him an excellent tour guide in Chicago, and then having learned so much about the town he was a natural fit for hotel concierge. Along the way he picked up magic. His desire was not to be a magician, only a serious student. On a trip to Magic Inc he chanced upon a book entitled "Now You See Them, Now You Don't". Written by Bill Weimer, it was a firsthand account of many of the magic bars and lounges that once flourished around Chicago. Bill had worked many of the old spots that had since gone away.

At the end of his book Bill wondered if anyone would ever bring back the idea. This inspired Joey, and magical things began happening. A friend was opening a burlesque theater space and was looking to fill off nights with other productions. Joey knew a handful of magicians and put together a concept that would bring people back to an evening in a magical lounge. It would be about laughter and fun, while watching great magicians and enjoying some cocktails. He named it the Chicago Magic Lounge.

The show caught on fast, and within a year one night a week became 2 nights. We went from small audiences to selling out a month or more in advance. One Saturday evening a guest came in to see our show, and introduced himself to Joey afterwards. It sounds like a fairytale, but he and Joey soon became partners and began looking for a location to build the Chicago Magic Lounge. They settled upon a nondescript building that had been a commercial laundry for over 40 years.

With top theater design architects and an amazing array of union construction crews ground was broken in June of 2017. The building was gutted and much of the roof removed to build our incredible space. Meanwhile Joey and his wife Cynthia assembled the management team. We were hoping to be open by December, but of course construction projects never go quite as planned. Finally all was ready and we welcomed our first guests at the end of February in 2018.
The success of any business lies in its leadership, and Joseph and Cynthia Cranford have created an unbelievable event and location that will continue to be cornerstone of live magical entertainment for years to come. Be sure to visit us when in Chicago, and don't forget Bibik works the bar every weekend!

8. Magical Women With Connie Boyd - KYOKO
--------------------------------------------
Message by Connie Boyd (USA)

We love Kyoko's fabulous, skilled, stylish stage-magic, hair-stylist/hair-dresser themed magic act from 2006. Kyoko is an award winning, highly respected Japanese magician with a dance background. Did you enjoy her creative magic?

This is the first performance of Kyoko's original Hair-Dresser/Hair-Stylist act. It was broadcast in Taiwan on the "Big Brother Variety" show which ran from 2002 to 2011 at 8pm every Saturday. In this clip, Kyoko is featured as a professional guest-star magician during the televised magic competition program. The competition regularly included female magicians from Asia and the judges included Taiwanese magic star Lu Chen.

Kyoko's magic career began in Japan in 1998 when she auditioned and was accepted into the prestigious Dolphin Magic Company by President Takaaki Kato. From there she began performing at banquets and corporate events throughout Japan. In July 2003 Kyoto's magic finished in the top ten at FISM in Holland. Kyoko continued to hone and perfect her craft to win numerous prestidigous awards and earn credits such as performing at the Magic Castle in 2006 and winning the IBM Stage Magic Competition in Miami the same year.

Kyoko competed in the 2006 FISM competition in Stockholm, Sweden and placed in the top ten in the world in the stage magic category. She has appeared in "Monte Carlo Magic Stars", in "Ingot Staedtev Zuabertage" in Germany among others. She has been photographed by Zachary Belamy and is a world class, awarded magician.

Many, many thanks and appreciation to Glyn Davies for sourcing this footage and providing provenance on this clip.

9. News From The Academy Of Illusions
--------------------------------------------
Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

The Symphony of 2022 has begun on an epic note and I'm very pleased to confirm that the rumours of Magic's demise are greatly exaggerated. Our alliance with Abra.tv is a dynamic synergy that is already bearing early fruit. When Tim Wise appointed me as News Director and Anchorman, my first decision was to lose the tired, old, network news look. I replaced it with a fresh, fast-paced, visual style that is both informative and fun to watch. Gone are the script reading talking heads, replaced with custom created content and music video style reports. So, if you haven't seen what's cooking at Abra.tv news, you are missing out on 2022's biggest story, so far.

With that in mind, our top story at the Academy is the latest edition of Abra.tv News. This State-of-the-Art webcast breaks new ground, focusing on current events, from coast to coast and around the globe. This week, I had the pleasure of talking with legendary performer and producer, Gay Blackstone, to discuss the 59th Founders Day of The Magic Castle. In the poignant, and heartfelt video tribute, Gay opened up to share personal stories and anecdotes from her many years at The Castle. We will continue to follow this story, up to the Founder's Day Celebrations, scheduled for February 6th.

Keeping with our manifesto of faithfully serving The Art of Magic, additional headline stories included Frank's Magic Bar in Key West, Florida, the Upcoming S.A.M. Convention in Las Vegas and the OMC Competition, which drew entries by newcomers, masters and grandmasters.

Rounding off the weekly webcast was the second instalment of "Navigating the New Normal", with Paul Draper. He discussed the basics of setting up a home Zoom studio, including camera, sound and lighting. He also debunked the notion that one needs to spend large amounts of money to accomplish this.

Next up was my second inspirational "Art of Wonder'' video on when the Craft of Magic becomes an Art. We then closed the show with Greg Gleason's award-winning performance, 4 Square, a mindblowing advance on the classic Matrix effect.

I'm already hard at work preparing this weekend's webcast, which will include Tim Wise at the S.A.M. Convention, introducing our UK correspondent, Romany with a preview of the Blackpool Convention, a look at the Vive La Magie Festival in France, plus all of our regular features. You can view all of the Abra.tv News features on our FB Page and on the website: www.Abra.tv

Meanwhile, GenoMania has become a hands down hit across FB and YouTube. This week, we aired the 16th Episode, which included all the usual magical mayhem plus the amazing Wonder Wallet, A hard look at sponge balls, our regular feature, "What Gets Your Goat?" plus a preview of our new Course in Magic, which is now in production.

Looking ahead to next week, world renowned magician and Academy Professor, Romany, will join me on the 5th Episode of "Illuminations". This program airs every full moon and delves into the mystical side of our Art, balancing Science with Sorcery and Physics with Metaphysics. You can watch it live Tuesday, on the Academy FB Page, at 12pm LA, 3pm NY, and 8pm UK Time and Wednesday at 7am SYD. If you can't catch it live, all of the replays are available to view, free-of-charge at: www.facebook.com/academyofillusions

10. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #44
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

As the Omicron virus has rapidly spread across the world, it was inevitable that it would eventually start to affect the world of entertainment.

The casualties have included the Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, and several of the shows on the Las Vegas Strip.

Magic didn't escape and amongst others, David Copperfield has cancelled a number of performances in his theater at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino.

But it's not all doom and gloom. Magic is still definitely alive and well. This weekend the S.A.M Convention rolls into town and is taking place at the Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino in Downtown, Las Vegas.

This convention has been here before, and in the past, it has always been well supported. It will be interesting to see what the numbers are like. They have some excellent performers lined up, so hopefully it will be successful.

Mention of conventions brings me to another very pleasant surprise. The world's largest magic convention run by Blackpool Magicians Club in the North West of England is going ahead as planned, against all the odds, from February 17th - 20th.

This is great news, and whilst the registrations won't compare to the heady numbers of over 5000 that they reached before the pandemic in 2020, the convention team, headed up by Russ Stevens, Russ Brown and Guy Barratt are confidently expecting between 2500 - 3000 to attend.

Apart from what is the usual excellent line-up of talent, this convention boasts the most extensive Dealers Hall of any magic convention, and that, in itself, is a huge draw.

I'm personally excited about the convention because I'll be travelling over to UK with Lynette Chappell, who many will know was Siegfried & Roy's leading lady and the 'Evil Queen' in their spectacular Las Vegas shows.

Lynette is a very classy and elegant lady who has had an incredible career working with Siegfried & Roy for 48 years, and I'll be hosting a presentation with her at the convention.

She has so many amazing stories, many of which have never been told before, so if you are planning to be at the convention, you really don't want to miss it!

11. On Your Marks - John Carey #147
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

A marked deck truly is a deadly tool. Since Penguin Magic put out their beautiful $5 Decks I make constant use of it in my work. On Your Marks is a really strong Mentalism piece where we are only concerned with values. Remove the Ace through Ten of mixed suits from your deck and display and then hand out to a participant for shuffling. Take back the packet and hand to hand spread for a free selection. Make a mental note of the value of this card by reading the marks as it is removed. Let's say, for example it is the Four.

"Paul, a range of numbers from one to ten are depicted on these cards. Please shuffle them well and then hand them back to me when you are happy. Tonight, let's just focus on the numbers on those cards to enable you and I to go on a little journey around the world. Please take one and
peek at the number, and then return it. Keep that number in your mind. Got it? Get it? Good!"

Once they've returned their card which in our example we know is four, replace the cards onto the balance of the deck and put it away. Extend both of your hands palm outwards towards your helper. "I'm going to call out ten countries from around the world, Paul. Please lock the thought of the country at the number you are thinking of into your mind." As you start calling out a list of countries, which I will give to you in a moment, start dropping fingers, starting with your left pinky and finishing the count and recital of the countries on your right pinky. The countries I call out are:

1. Australia
2. Belgium
3. Canada
4. Denmark
5. Egypt
6. France
7. Germany
8. Holland
9. Italy
10. Japan

You will note how easy it is to remember these countries because we are using an A to J combination. So you ask your participant to remember the country at their number. Your work from a method standpoint is done. All that remains is to make the reveal of their country dramatic. Don't just blurt it out. Ask them to visualize something about that country, it's location, something famous about it like an iconic landmark, a famous person from that country and so on. Eventually reveal their country, Denmark in this example.

I promise you that you will receive a very strong reaction. Don't rush the effect. Set the scene, be warm and sincere and build it up and bring it home.

Alternative Drawing Duplication Effect:

Instead of countries, I also love using exactly the above modus operandi, but for a drawing duplication effect. Once I know their number and the cards are put away I extend both hands as before and do the same finger count from one to ten and ask them to remember the object at their
number. The ten objects I call out are:

1. Apple
2. Bell
3. Car
4. Door
5. Egg
6. Flower
7. Glass
8. Hat
9. Ice
10. Jar

I then take out two business cards and hand them one to write or draw their object, whichever they feel most comfortable with. I turn away as I draw the object. If their number was three I would draw a car etc. Turn back around, have them display their object and then reveal your drawing and bring the mystery to a successful conclusion.

You are only limited by your imagination in what you can reveal. Be creative. Use names, places, songs, anything you wish. Above all, have fun!

12. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

"Who's a 'Naughty Boy' Then?"

Well after my little (little?) detour I'm now back on the 'Cocky' trail again. For those of you who are wondering, "what the hell does he mean by 'Cocky", it is slang Down Under for a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, often Parrots as well. For those of you who are now trying to figure out what I mean by 'Down Under', it is a term of expression for those of us who hail from, or live in New
Zealand and Australia; rather obvious if you look at a globe of the world. And for those of you wondering why I have bothered to explain these slang words which are common to us; they mean nothing to those readers of my Saga who reside in many other regions of the world. Now they do! 'Choice, eh boy'!

Carrying on from the first paragraph on the preceding page, we got our first and newly acquired cockatoo home from the market and, full of excitement, opened the cage door - we didn't want
him to feel trapped. We sat, saying things like 'Hello, Hello', 'Pretty Boy.' and other inane mutterings. He perched, beadily eyeing us with what seemed like great disdain. Tired of waiting
for something to happen, I finally got up and cautiously approached the cage. Attached to the sides of the cage were two large containers - water in one and sunflower seeds in the other, which are staple diet for cockatoos. Also wedged between the wires of the cage were a few pieces of cuttlefish bone.

Trying to be clever, I wriggled a piece of cuttlefish, thinking that I would distract him while I got some seed from out of the dish. Think again! As my fingers groped in the dish he screamed
and lunged at my hand - I jumped backwards in fright, a 'Not Nice' aroma wafted around the room as I hastily counted my fingers, fully expecting to see one or two twitching on the floor. All I wanted was to show him that I was nice, friendly kind of chap, and offer him some seeds from my hand; all he wanted was my finger(s) or at least a chunk out of my hand! Bloody Bird!

A week went by and he wouldn't let us near him. He would wander around the floor and sort of fly around the room (with a partly clipped wing he couldn't get far or gain much height), but he
didn't want a bar of us. A month or so goes by and nothing has changed, he hasn't tamed down in the slightest he is still a wild, nasty piece of works. We could usually usher him into his cage if we wanted to go out - it was a place of refuge and food for him, and we could close the door of the cage.

One day when we decided to go shopping, the little sod refused to get into his cage; finally we just gave up and left him to it, closed the front door and took off. We returned around three or
four hours later. All was quiet and he was sitting in his cage - well and good, then we noticed the television, it had collapsed down onto one corner. It was one of those old fashioned types
that were supported by four wooden legs that screwed into the base of the TV, if you can remember back that far. Cockatoos are renowned for their destructive chewing abilities - they can munch their way through cage perches in no time at all - the television leg had no chance! Well that was the last straw. The bird had to go!

Naively, we had gone to a huge open-air market stall to buy a cockatoo at 'The Right Price' - that in all probability had been illegally trapped, along with many others, from out of the Australian bush (unfortunately, a commonplace practice in Australia) by people who are after a 'Quick Buck' with little regard, if any, towards wildlife. The birds are roughly handled and badly treated from the time of their capture to the day they are sold to unsuspecting 'innocents' like ourselves - it is little wonder that they remain wild and have absolutely no trust in humans.

While on the subject of untamed birds, a few months later we heard about a chap who was known as 'The Bird Man' who had 'a way' with birds (the feathered kind - maybe the un-feathered as well, who knows) much like a 'Horse Whisperer'. He worked at a huge pet
shop out at Parramatta (a suburb of Sydney) - we just had to see this man work his particular 'Magic'. It's been many years now but I remember a long corridor with a massive indoor aviary at one end that was full of cockatoos.

Wearing gloves, he got one out and put it on the floor; its yellow crest was up and it was screaming and hissing in rage. He took the long gloves off and using a long stick managed to coax the bird to climb onto it. Don't ask me how, but in a matter of minutes that wild, screaming, 'I'll bite the hand off of any bugger who comes near me' cockatoo, was sitting on his arm and letting him scratch it - in obvious pleasure and complete trust. When I asked him how he did it, he said he didn't know that he'd always had the 'knack'! Whatever it was, he sure had it! It was a wonderful demonstration of - Pure, Natural Magic!

To be continued.
