Around The Lounge

My Name is Jeff Bibik, and this is the second in a series of reports from The Chicago Magic Lounge. Started in 2016 at a rented theater in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago, the Chicago Magic Lounge founders and an amazing investor built a state of the art magic theater and nightclub which opened at 5050 N Clark Street in Chicago in 2018. Entrance from the street is through a laundry room, (the building was a commercial laundry for 40 years when we took it over) find the secret door and you are in the Performance Bar and Library.

To the right, the library holds books and artifacts of the magic history of Chicago. The bar area, to the left, is where I perform every weekend, Thursday through Sunday. The bar is open to the public at 5 pm every day, no admission is required. Through another secret door and you are in the Blackstone Cabaret, a 120 seat show room with 100 seats on the main floor and an exclusive balcony mezzanine for 20. The room was designed specifically for the performance of magic; there really is not 'a bad seat in the house'. These shows require a paid admission. Behind the main show room is the 654 Club, an intimate theater of 45 raked seats for a formal close up show setting. With shows 7 nights a week and excellent food and beverage service, the Chicago Magic Lounge is one of the premier magic nightclubs in the country, some say in the world!

As for me, I've been a professional magician and hypnotist my entire life. I know you're probably saying "Bibik? Never heard of him…" That's OK, I've never heard of you either! My story is familiar, started as a kid and have done almost all types of magic- schools, amusement parks & resorts, trade shows and corporate events, cruise ships, bars and restaurants, hypnosis shows, comedy clubs, the list goes on. After a lifetime of experience I have found a true home here behind the bar, doing magic and making friends, with lots of fun and laughter along the way.

Over the next few episodes of "Around The Lounge" I'll be telling you more of our stories, introducing you to our house and guest magicians, and sharing experiences from behind the bar and on stage. Plenty of routines, tips and jokes too! Check out ChicagoMagicLounge.com for photos and to plan a visit.

Next week- The life of a bar magician, or dealing with the drunks!

My grandfather used to say, "Make hay while the sun shines." When it comes to the Art of Magic, the sun must be shining, because we are producing mountains of magical hay. This week has seen 2 more ZoomStorming Sessions, The 2nd Episode of Illusioneering, the 4th Episode of GenoMania, the world Premiere of two Original Routines and the next "Seven Secrets" installment.

Saturday's ZoomStorming VI Masterclasses focused on one of the most powerful, practical and versatile of all Utility Devices. Over the course of the 2 hour sessions, I detailed dozens of applications for the Cloaking Device: Bill & Card Switches, Torn & Restored, Cut & Restored, Appearances, Vanishes, Transformations, Sponge Balls, Silks, Ribbons and more. Over 25 years of experience condensed into a single training session! I only wish that I could have attended this as a teenager. How much farther along would I be now? Luckily, that's the whole point of the Academy: To inspire the next generations by passing on a spirit of innovation in the Art and a commitment to excellence. By popular demand, we are planning to repeat the first 4 ZoomStorming Sessions next month. If you are interested, please contact me for details.

For the 2nd episode of Illusioneering, which streamed to The Art of Wonder FB Group, I focused on my upcoming Series of Digital Downloads, specifically, the first one, "Get Reel". One of the Routines I performed, "Circularity" has been 40 years in development. I've closed my shows and lectures with this for over a year. I will teach this effect, and others, on the Download, as well as in Saturday's ZoomStorming Sessions.

Geno DeVille, our Master of Mischief and Mayhem, has been away for 2 weeks, performing at the Happy Valley Magic Festival. For his comeback show, he delighted us with a mind bending new Card Illusion, powerful insights and tips on Coin Bending, his hilarious Stories from the Road plus details on upcoming releases. He also dropped the world premiere of my brand new "Cane & Scarf'' routine. You can watch the replay of this, and our other Magi-only shows, on The Art of Wonder FB Group.

Last, but certainly not least, we posted the next episode of Alan Watson's "Seven Secrets to Success" on the Academy FB Page and The Art of Wonder Group. These contain priceless and practical information that every magician can benefit from. The response has been tremendous and, on behalf of the Academy, I extend my gratitude to Alan for allowing us to share these.

So, as for those bales of magical hay, they appear to be multiplying like rabbits!

7. Free Will 2020 - John Carey #138

Message by John Carey (UK)

In my previous book, Reflections, I had a particularly strong version of the classic Free Will plot. This new version has been streamlined somewhat and really does create the illusion of freedom in the minds of the spectators.

You will need a blue and a green dice, a red and black spot card, and a double headed ten pence coin. On a file card or piece of paper write the following:

I will have the blue dice
You will have the green dice
I will have the red card
You will have the black card
The ten pence will land on heads!!!

Bring out the props and set the two dice together, a few inches from them put the two face-up cards, and finally a few inches from them the coin. Take out the folded file card or piece of paper and casually set it to one side without mentioning anything about it. Just do it.

"Liam, as you can see I've brought along a few interesting objects this evening: dice, cards and a coin. Let's focus on the dice first. With your left hand pick up either one. The blue dice it is. Place it in front of you and I will do the same with the green dice. Now the playing cards. Would
you hold one in each hand please? Merely on impulse would you drop one now! Is there any way we could have known you would keep the red card? Please set it next to your dice. I will do the same with the black card.

Finally pick up the coin and spin it on the table. It has landed on heads. You've done everything here, based purely on your intuitive or instinctive sense. Would you pick up that piece of card and open it? Please read out the first line, then the second, the third and finally the fourth. Impossible but true!!!"

Pretty strong if I say so myself. Let's deconstruct the details and variables so that you can add this to your repertoire. With the dice they have complete freedom of choice, but I play it out like Equivoque. Mark Elsdon calls this Noquivoque. I instruct them to pick up either dice with their left hand. If they pick up the blue dice they will read the prediction at the end a la Free Will. If they pick up the green dice you will read out the prediction later. So both of you have a dice in front of you.

The second phase is pure Equivoque. Whoever has the blue dice will get the red card. I ask my participant to hold a card face-up in each hand and on impulse just drop one. If they drop the red card I immediately ask if there's any way we could have known they would decide to drop that
card? They are then instructed to place it with their dice as I calmly take the black card and place it next to my dice. However, if they drop the black card my response is could we have known they would decide to keep the red card? Ask them to place that card next to their dice as you take the black card and set it down next to your dice.

The final phase is simple. Have them spin the coin on the table. Of course it will land heads up. Recap what has taken place, that it was all about them, and their decisions. Then either you or they unfold the prediction and read it out, pausing on each revelation. I've had so much fun with
this. Now it's your turn...

8. 3 Crippling Entertainment-Business Mistakes?
--------------------------------------------
Message by Joe Libby (US)

Are You Making These 3 Crippling Entertainment-Business Mistakes? (And What to do Instead.)

Starting a new business can be daunting and peppered with potential landmines, even when it's a business providing entertainment services (a FUN business!). Whether you are a magician, a ventriloquist, a juggler, or a musician, give some thought and preparation to how you set up your business so you don't sabotage yourself.

Crippling Entertainment-Business Mistake #1:
Waiting for the phone to ring. A watched pot never boils, and a watched phone never rings!

Do This Instead: Take action now! If you are just starting out, you need to start letting people and organizations know that you exist. If that means donating a couple of shows to a worthy cause you believe in, then do so. Make sure you get a testimonial from the organization; what others say about you is infinitely more powerful than what you say about yourself.

Crippling Entertainment-Business Mistake #2:
Pursuing the wrong market for your act. Or building the wrong act for your market.

Do This Instead: You can work in more than one market, but you really need to understand each market you work in and approach each one differently. For instance, you may think doing R-rated humor at a corporate event will go over great, but all it takes is one person being offended to really hurt your reputation. With rare exceptions, card tricks won't go over well at kids' shows. Now you may be surprised to read this next part, but I believe you CAN do some kids' show magic for corporate events since those tricks are colorful and big fun . . . but you will need to work out a different presentation from what you do for birthday shows and school shows.

Crippling Entertainment-Business Mistake #3:
Not treating your entertainment business like a business!

Do This Instead: Remember that "business" is the larger part of "show business." In order to survive, thrive, and stay alive, you have to take your business seriously. Make sure your show is well rehearsed and solid. Behave professionally at all times. If you make a mistake, do everything in your power to fix it.

So what's the bottom line? It does take a little time to build a solid entertainment business, but it's also a very easy business to get going. You can begin as early as today! And if you are a real go-getter, you can book your first couple of performances right away. Just be sure that you and your show are ready!

And remember that when you are in the entertainment business; you are in the business of making people happy. What a great business to be in!

If you want to perform magic (or ventriloquism, or juggling, etc.) as a business and make some good money but aren't sure how to start, I can help you! 9. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #33
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

For the past couple of weeks, I've been performing on a cruise ship which inevitably has meant there's been a lot of down time.

I generally don't have much time to watch magic DVD's but on this occasion, I brought with me a Penguin DVD featuring British mentalist Marc Paul.

Marc has been around the magic scene for many years and has pretty much done everything performing wise including Stage shows, Cabaret, Cruises, and TV.

Marc always looks smart and is a top professional. His magic is strong, and he possesses that singularly important attribute, likeability.

I have talked about this before and, in my opinion, it is so important. If your audience like you, and warm to you, then it's half the battle.

I'm not the biggest fan of mentalism unless it is performed well and is entertaining, and Marc certainly ticks both those boxes.

When I produced the 'Magic on the Mersey' Convention in Liverpool a few years ago, Marc was one of the featured performers, and he presented an outstanding lecture.

On the Penguin DVD Marc performs and explains a few really commercial routines which are not difficult to do and are not only baffling to a lay audience but also entertaining to watch. Marc explains everything clearly, and offers many additional performing tips. I'd forgotten just how good it was.

Whilst on the cruise I got talking to a few people from Toronto in Canada. I've always wanted to spend more time there. My only visit to Canada was to Vancouver a number of years ago with my close friend, the legendary entertainer and world renowned hypnotist Peter Reveen. It was one of my most special memories. Peter was a wonderful friend, and I miss him a great deal.

FISM will be taking place in Quebec City next year and I'm hoping to be there. I've been to a few FISM Conventions over the years. I particularly remember my first one, I believe it was in 1976 in Vienna. I travelled with a party from the Magic Circle which included Ali Bongo and his mum. What a character she was! Happy Days!

About The Magicians appearing in the Fall 2018 U.S.A. and Canada Live Tour:

Jonathan Pendragon, Grand Master of Illusion, has performed at three Presidential Galas, the Royal Variety Gala for the Queen of England, a special performance for the Prince of Wales, and received the Grand Prix de Magique de Monte Carlo, which was presented to him by Sean Connery in front of The Royal Family.

Pendragon's Las Vegas credits include being the featured act in City Lights at the Flamingo, Caesar's Magical Empire and in the historic Jubilee at Bally's. He also appeared on the main stage at Caesar's and presented a full evening show at the Aladdin. He was a Las Vegas resident for 17 years. His Atlantic City credits are equally as impressive.

He has circled the globe numerous times performing on six continents included full evening shows in Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Vienna, Rio, Cairo, London, Paris Sydney, and Berlin. In Berlin he performed at the historic Wintergarden and in Paris at the Olympia, perhaps the two most famous Music Halls in the World.

His television credits also span the globe. They include starring in his own television show in England (an ensemble cast of four magicians). He starred in the most elaborate magic special ever filmed "Disney's Night of Magic" which was filmed at Disneyland near Paris, a two-hour special which aired throughout Europe and around the world. He starred in his own television special for NHK in Japan. Over the last four years Pedragon has been a frequent performer on The CW Network's Masters of Illusion having performed over 20 times. He has also toured with Masters of Illusion Live! performing all over the U.S. and internationally.

Jonathan Pendragon has received the most prestigious awards in Magic, including twice receiving Best Illusionist from the World Magic Awards as well as Magician of the Year. He was twice named the Magician of the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts, the governing body of The Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA. He is in the Guinness Book of World Records for his performance of Metamorphosis, the illusion for which he is best known. According to Guinness, he performs it fast than anyone in history.

He was listed as one of the most influential magicians of the 20th century by MAGIC Magazine at the beginning of the 21st Century. His late friend Siegfried Fischbacher has called his work genius, and David Copperfield has remarked that Jonathan will be remembered in history of magic for his creativity. Pendragon invented what is probably the most popular "sawing in half" Illusion today, Clearly Impossible, which uses glass boxes instead of the traditional wooden ones.

Dan Sperry, the Shock Illusionist and Anti-Conjuror has been described as David Copperfield meets Marilyn Manson and is the only illusionist to ever be awarded the title of most original magician on FOX's "World Magic Awards." His show combines illusion and the bizarre with satirical macabre humor. It is non-stop mayhem set to an industrial musical score with razor blades, buzz saws, voodoo, blood and more. Sperry has toured with Masters of Illusion Live! and was featured in the 6th and 7th seasons of the hit television series Masters of Illusion on The CW Network.

11. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Australia
Not surprisingly, 'The Done Lane Show' vanished from Australian television screens overnight. In a matter of days, this television 'Super Star' had left Australia for America in disgrace, never to be heard of again. How the mighty can fall - WOW!

Bert Newton is a very funny, likeable man, one of Australia's top TV personalities and most talented actors; he is still going strong. In fact our own Kiwi 'Wonder Voice', Derek Metzger, was working with Bert a few years ago in the long running Theatre Production of -'The Wizard of OZ', in Melbourne.

Getting back to Clive Herring at the Wentworthville Leagues Club, I was very grateful to him and his 'Back Stage Boys for all their assistance and advice when it came to protocol and 'How Things Are Done' in the Sydney clubs. The very first thing you learnt was that you arrived on time at the club; and that meant - AT LEAST ONE-HOUR BEFORE SHOWTIME! Rehearsals with the band and sound and lighting checks with the technicians had to be completed by all artists, no exceptions, before the audience rolled in. This rule was strictly enforced, as I was to discover, in all of the thousands of clubs throughout Sydney Town, and beyond - throughout the whole of the State of New South Wales.

If you turned up late, you didn't go on and, you didn't get paid! 'Them were the rules'! Consequently, everyone made bloody sure that they left home in plenty of time to arrive at the club and park as near to the stage entrance as possible, especially if you had equipment to get in. Some of the clubs even provided a special - 'ARTISTS CAR PARK', for the entertainer's convenience. Not only that, but from the artists entrance door, you walk straight into a corridor that had several dressing rooms leading off it; toilets/ showers were also provided. What a far cry from the crap conditions we had to put up with back in New Zealand!

If you had another club job to get to after you had finished that gig, you had to make sure that you could get on the running order early, so that you could pack up and get going, to arrive at the
next gig in time for their sound and lighting checks etc. As long as you let everyone know, there rarely was a problem. In some clubs, you were required to stay to the end, for an 'All Cast
Finale Bow' to the audience, which was a right pain in the arse if you had another show to get to. If another gig came in to follow the first booking, and the timing to get there clashed, you just had to decline the job and lose money - all because some 'Tit' required that you stay, for the sake of a few minutes bow!

Also, it was extremely important to know, to the exact minute, how long your act(s) was. There were several reasons for this. All the club's concerts ran a specified length - every minute
taken up with the show meant that the audience weren't playing the all-important Poker Machines that paid for everything, or rather, the punters who played them did! You had a running order of all the artists, and the length of their act, so there was no excuse for you not to be ready to walk on stage when you were announced. Also, if you had the temerity to run overtime, you brought not only the wrath of the club management upon your head (which meant you would never get a re-booking at that particular club, and word would very quickly get around that you were unreliable. The consequences meant 'Death and Starvation'), but the anger of all the other acts as well; most of them would have another club show to get to, and if they were late turning up at their next gig because of your egoism and disdain by 'stealing their time'- and consequently lost money, well.? You never, ever, ran overtime!

There was another reason for knowing the exact length of your act(s). If you were doing a Sunday concert at an RSL, they would always, at precisely 9pm, have - 'THE ODE'. It wouldn't be the first time that an artist in full swing would find that the lights have faded to a blackout and the microphone - the entire stage sound system had suddenly gone dead! A recorded voice would
then slowly intone the revered words of the ode, to 'Those who have fallen'. You made bloody sure that your act would be finished by 9pm. We never got caught, but I remember a few who
did!
