Chicago Magic Lounge

Welcome back to the performance bar at the Chicago Magic Lounge. We call it "David's Bar", in honor of the person who designed our theater. Our bar capacity is small, about 30 at most. There are 8 seats at the bar and a long banquette that can hold about 14, and some standing room. When magicians find out I perform so often at the bar a frequent question is "How do you deal with the drunks?"

The fortunate thing about being at the CML is that most people come there wanting to see magic. They are already on your side which makes the job easier. With a restaurant gig every table is essentially a 'cold call' no matter how much your appearance is promoted by the house. Very few (if any) people came to that restaurant just to see magic. Rejection is part of the gig. Over the years I have developed several approaches that work well for me in restaurants, but you can still be turned away from a table. As you get better it happens less, but it still happens. One key to success in restaurant magic is to know when to approach a table, and more important, when to leave!

At the CML we don't often run into people that have had too much, but it does happen. The first thing to remember is to be professional. They are in your room, so you are in control. There are a couple of different types of drunks, the first is the playful kind. They are not out to bring you down, they want to be a part of the fun but don't quite know how. These people are merely seeking attention, and there is nothing wrong with giving them some, but not too much. They are mostly harmless, and indeed can add to the fun. Let's remember, we're just doing magic tricks, not brain surgery! Be flexible in responding in the moment, if you just plow through your routine it comes off hollow.

I'm not a big fan of 'heckler stoppers'. If someone says something funny, let them get the laugh. You need not come back at them and 'top' them. In life most people never get to be the funny guy, so be ready to roll with it. I have gotten some great lines and ideas from funny things people have said. Keep your ears open and remember the lines (even write them down) so that next time you can use the line and get the laugh for yourself.

Another type of annoyance are the 'grabbers'. They think nothing of grabbing something out of your hands or off the bar top. Some may be given a prop to hold or examine and then won't give it back. They may even break something. The answer is to keep yourself and your props more than an arms' length away, or if needed, move away from them. Never give out something valuable or breakable. In restaurants it is usually kids in this category, though not actually 'drunks' they sometimes act like it!

Finally there are the truly intoxicated. They can't follow along, and often they don't even realize how stupid they are acting. If this happens, it is best to simply walk away. Don't finish your routine, just end it. If they persist, they can be escorted out by management. This does happen. We once had a woman sitting along the wall with one of her rather large breasts out of her dress. This was no costume malfunction; she took it out and put it back several times. When our manager told her she had to keep her boob in her dress she said "Oh, I don't mind". Lesley said "Well we do, so it's time for you to go" Don't mess with Lesley! You truly never know who will walk in, we once had a guy come in saying "Help me help me, I swallowed a boomerang!" We must have kicked him out ten times!

6. 29th German Magic Historian Meeting
--------------------------------------------
Message by Wittus Witt (Germany)

The 29th German Magic Historian Meeting will take place in Hamburg , 28th and 29th of October 2021.

The Event will take place at one of Hamburg's magic theatres namely the one founded in 2016 by Joerg Borrmann in his "Wunderkontor".

There will be several speakers plus a magical flea market.

Accompanying this meeting is a special magic exhibition in Wittus Witt's art gallery dedicated to the magic of Hamburg.

Hamburg has a long tradition in our art. In 1899 Carl Willmann founded the first magic society in the world.

He also published one of the first magical periodicals Die Zauberwelt".

Not to forget the famous magic dealer János Bartl who opened his shop right in the center of Hamburg in 1910.

Special guest will be Dr. Rita Bake who founded "The Garden of women". A place at Hamburgs largest cemetery which is dedicated to famous Hamburg women.

Three years ago Rosa Bartl was added to this special place. Her special tombstone is in the shape of a top hat out of which a rabbit comes out - yes, what you just read is true.

At the first evening world champion Jan Logemann will show us his special card magic for which he was presented first prize at Blackpool FISM in 2012.

Whoever will be near Hamburg during this time is kindly invited. There is no admission fee, except for the Jan Logemann show for which we ask 22,50 Euro.

8. News From The Academy Of Illusions

Message by Jay Scott Berry (Australia)

Another week has passed, and what a magical week it's been! In just 7 days, we've seen the release of "Seven Secrets", the premiere of "Illusioneering", a new Poet Laureate Professor, plus more Masterclasses, Private Sessions, and the announcement of 10 new Digital Downloads, leading up to the Holidays. That's a lot of creative conjuring!

Top of the News: Grandmaster magician, Alan Watson has generously offered his Video Series, "Seven Secrets to Success for Magicians and Entertainers", to the Academy and 'The Art of Wonder" Group. There are many who talk the talk about show business, but very few have walked the walk like Alan has. These should be required watching to everyone who wishes to make a living in the entertainment industry. Thank you, Alan, for this extraordinary gift.

Our latest weekly Series debuted on Tuesday, streaming to "The Art of Wonder" Group. The title, "Illusioneering" is a term I coined some years ago relating to the Engineering of Illusions and the Science of Wonder. For the first Episode, we stepped back 35 years for a detailed look at my groundbreaking book, "Magic for the New World". I also discussed the '84 French Convention in Versailles, and how my appearance there led to meeting Georges Proust, who published the "European Stars of Magic" Series. Finally, I revealed, for the first time, my 3 dimensional business card design, which also doubles as a Table Tent for Strolling Magic.

October seems an auspicious month to add our 13th Professor to the Academy. With that in mind, we are very pleased to welcome wizard, wonderworker and celebrated author, Roger Blakiston, as our official Poet Laureate. Jolly Roger hails from England and now resides in the mystical realm of Sedona, Arizona.

The ZoomStorming Masterclasses continue to gather momentum. Each, 90 minute intensive, focuses on different gimmicks, effects and fundamental sleight-of-hand techniques. Session V was dedicated to advanced Coin Conjuring, which included, for the first time, an in-depth study of my Signature Routines, "Spellbinder" and "Quintet". This weekend, we'll focus on one of the most powerful, and versatile, gimmicks of our Craft, "The Cloaking Device". Besides the cumulative body of knowledge being presented, each Session stands alone as a Lecture/Workshop, available to Clubs or Groups, upon request.

We are very pleased to announce a new series of Digital Downloads, to be released once a week, starting next Wednesday. Five of these will be mine, starting with "Circularity": A detailed study of my Silk and Ring Routine, with extensive bonus material which includes Silk thru Wand, Mic Stand, Cane and more! These will all be available exclusively from: www.DeVilleMagic.net

Finally, we are just a week away from the Premiere of The Mystic Cabaret, on the 15th. The curious cast of characters has convened for what promises to be a prestigious presentation of peculiar prestidigitation. (Say that 3 times...lol) All details on Academy Events can be found on the FB Page: www.Facebook.com/AcademyofIllusions

9. Shuffle And Think - John Carey #137
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

'Think A Card' is such a strong effect. It's one thing finding a taken card, but the perception of the discovery of a card just thought of is much greater in the minds and eyes of the public. Shuffle and Think was inspired by my friend, Dani DaOrtiz's work. Dani has a great method
using a deck that is dribbled face-up. My method uses a very fair overhand shuffle action and is based on restriction, but if your words, timing and attitude are in sync it doesn't appear so. Execute a face-down overhand shuffle and square up. Then flip the deck face-up.

"Jason, as I shuffle these cards just look at one. But don't look at the bottom card as that's too obvious." As you say this, execute a face-up overhand shuffle, your spectator seeing the faces. Once you've shuffled off around half the deck chop off about 12 more cards on top as you say just look at one. Make a mental note of this card and throw the remaining cards on top, as you say "but don't look at this one as it's too obvious" and gesture to the face card of the deck. Then hand the deck out for shuffling as you state they are just thinking of a card. Use your secret information as you see fit to frazzle their minds!

Notes: I sometimes do this with my head turned away. The only difference in handling is that the last packet is slightly injogged as it's dropped on top of the deck. This enables me to secure a pinky-break above the mental selection before I look back to my participant. I can then easily access the card a few moments later as I casually spread the face-up deck in the hands. It's all about timing and attitude and confidence. Have fun with it!

You can also apply the concept to hand-to-hand face-up spreads, the Hindu shuffle and cutting face-up packets to the table...

11. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #32
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Stone (US)

One of the joys of being around the world of magic for nearly half a century has been the list of incredible magicians that I have met along the way.

I've been fortunate to have travelled extensively and attended numerous magic conventions over the years which has afforded me the opportunity to see many magicians from all four corners of the globe in action.

But, of course, whilst there is only room for a few headliners, there are also thousands of pros, semi pros, occasional performers, hobbyists and collectors. They are all part of the extended magic 'family'.

You can virtually guarantee that if you land in a strange town or city that that there will be a magician to be found somewhere!

Last week I was in Manhattan, spending a day in New York prior to boarding a cruise ship to Bermuda. I phoned one of my close friends, Seth Kramer, who lives there, to say Hi. It turned out he was walking to a meeting and was literally five minutes away from me at the time!

So, we met up, had a coffee and then wandered over to Tannen's Magic Shop which was nearby. New York is a huge city, so bumping into Seth like that was pretty amazing. I first met Seth probably 30 years ago, and he is one of the top Trade Show performers in USA. He's a good friend and a great guy.

A name that might not be quite so familiar to you is Steven Trott, or to be more precise Dr Steven Trott. When I was a magic dealer Steven was a customer of mine. He lives in Bermuda where he was born and raised. I was reacquainted with him a few weeks ago when I lectured at Bill Smith's Magic Collectors Expo in Las Vegas.

As I mentioned I was due to perform on a cruise from New York to Bermuda and Steven kindly offered to show me around the island when I got there.

Everything went to plan until on the morning that I was supposed to meet him, out of nowhere I got raging toothache. I didn't want to put off our meeting but truthfully, I didn't feel like talking to anyone!

I got off the ship and met up with Steven. It turned out that he was a retired orthopedic surgeon and had an extensive medical background. He marched me up to the local pharmacy and prescribed some antibiotics and pain medication for me.

To say that he came to my rescue is something of an understatement, it made a huge difference and I'm extremely grateful for his help.

Just another example of the magic 'family'!

The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Australia …
The problem for me was that more than 99% of the clubs booked all their entertainment through various entertainment agencies, and they sure had the scene sewn up tight. Most of the clubs (Returned Services League and Football clubs) had their shows scheduled at least two months ahead. So, although my Press cuttings and publicity from New Zealand was attention grabbing,
and the various secretary and club managers I met through Bill were suitably impressed, I still couldn't get work; they kept referring me to umpteen different agencies. After ringing a few,
the first thing they wanted know was - "Where are you working so we can come and have a look at your show?" Difficult when you can't get booked!

To make ends meet, I had to resort to going to various restaurants, showing them 'my wares' and performing close-up magic. They weren't anything special or flash - no contracts or tax was involved, just cash in hand; the money was peanuts, but I had to pay our way somehow. For me, performing magic like that it was quite mortifying but, when needs must, besides - it was good practice.

The 'Orchanté Luck', strikes again! Bill takes me to the Wentworthville Leagues Club, another of which he was a member. The Secretary Manager was Clive Herring, a really nice and agreeable chap. He was one of the very few who freelanced and did his own entertainment bookings - not relying on what agents sent him. He knew what sort of acts went well for his club; he had lists of all the better agents and what acts they had on their books, and HE would choose which artists HE wanted.

Sunday 15th August - exactly fifteen days after we had arrived, we performed our first ever show in Australia - at the 'WENTY' (as it was commonly called) Leagues Club! Our show went down a storm! Afterwards, we finished up in the club restaurant for a meal, and a congratulatory bottle or two of wine etc. Naturally, the close-up magic started - Clive was gob-smacked, and he asked me if I would consider performing the 'close-up' in the restaurant on an assortment of nights for him! I worked the close-up magic for several weeks at the 'Wenty's' restaurant, as well as continuing with the 'El Cheapos' for a short time then, things started moving.

The following Sunday, the 22nd August, we did an afternoon show at the Fairfield RSL. Apparently, one of the acts hadn't turn up for some reason; the secretary manager remembered us, and that we were staying at Bills home. He rang to see if we could fill in - we did! Twenty-two days in the country and it seems as if doors are starting to open. More so when, on the following Thursday when I was working my close-up at the 'Wenty', Clive rebooked our show for the Fri. 3rd, Sat. 4th and Sun. 5th September. We were the support act for Australia's Top TV 'Star' at the time - Don Lane, an American who resided in Australia. The look of disbelief on Clive's' face when I said, "Who's He?" was a sight to behold. The 'Done Lane Show', which also included famous Australian personality - Bert Newton, as 'Second Banana', was the hottest Variety Show on Television, and had been for some years before we arrived in Aussie. How would we know that, after all, we had only been in the Country 'five minutes' - as it were!

A few years later, it all went 'Pear Shaped' for Done Lane when he had The Amazing James Randi, as a guest artist one night. James had arrived in Australia because several water diviners were claiming his offer of One Million Dollars, saying they could 'prove' that they were the 'genuine article' (they didn't). On the TV show, Don Lane asked James about Uri (spit, spit) Geller, James's pet subject.

'The Amazing Randi', proceeded to demonstrate how Geller fakes 'Spoon Bending' etc. when suddenly, Done Lane, obviously a believer in Geller (the fool), TOTALLY 'LOST IT'- ON LIVE
TELEVISION, IN FRONT OF A VIEWING AUDIENCE OF MILLIONS! In an outrageous, unbelievable fit of temper and behaviour, he wildly slung his arm across the table, and swept the spoons, forks, everything - off the table in front of James, sending it flying in all directions across the studio, then stormed off the stage! Veronica and I were among the huge viewing audience to witness this astonishing episode. We just sat, as I guess the rest of the millions of other viewers did - in stunned silence!
