6. Cartomantic Force - John Carey #121
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

The subtle use of time misdirection or shift of focus can be a deadly tool. Just look at the classic Cross Cut Force of Max Holden's for a prime example. The Cartomantic Force falls into this same category.

Begin with say the Jack of Clubs on top of the deck. Execute an in the hands riffle shuffle retaining it there. Turn the deck face up and slip shuffle, keeping the force card there. Hold the face up deck in dealing grip. Ask a spectator to cut off about half and table them. Take the
remainder of the deck at your right fingertips, holding it over the tabled packet. Comment on the suit of the face card of this packet and segue into a little cartomancy, Clubs representing groups and family, Hearts love and relationships, Spades representing work and Diamonds money and
wealth.

This is not only interesting, especially for ladies but provides the shift of focus. "Let's put a card we can't see down." Suiting actions to words you flip the packet face down and deal the top card face down and up-jogged onto the tabled face up packet. Flip the remaining cards face up and place them on top, leaving a card protruding- the Jack of Clubs...

What you do next is entirely up to you. You can maybe have a prediction you bring out or use another deck. Or simply have them look at the face down card with your head turned, remember it and then lose it in the deck. Above all, it's your attitude and demeanor that will make this deceptive.

Be bold and be brave... ;-)

9. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #14

Message by Paul Stone (US)

Las Vegas is once again open for business! Finally, after more than 12 months of darkness, the 'Entertainment Capital of World' has emerged from its slumbers! All the Casinos on the famous Las Vegas Strip are now open and operating at 100% capacity. The only difference is that the visitors are predominantly from within the USA, as International visitors still haven't yet returned, and are unlikely to do so in any real numbers until next year.

But the major Stars are returning and many big names will be appearing from later this month. Next week I'll let you know all the magicians who will be back in action and performing in town.

This week I'm continuing my features on some of the important magicians of the past, this time two British magicians. One was a true international legend; the other was less well-known outside the UK. What they had in common was that they were both giants in their chosen areas of magical expertise.

The first was Maurice Fogel. Also billed as the Amazing Fogel, Maurice Fogel was born on July 7, 1911, and died on October 30, 1981, at the age of seventy.

Fogel was probably best known for his performances of Russian Roulette, Cheating the Gallows, and his sensational version of the Bullet Catch, which involved him standing in front of a firing squad. To learn more about the incredible life of Maurice Fogel you should check out Chris Woodward's book, Maurice Fogel - In Search of the Sensational! (Chris was Maurice's son-in-law.)

I met Maurice relatively late in his career; I believe it was through an introduction from Ken Brooke. Maurice was a deep thinker and a complicated man, but show business coursed through his veins. The name Fogel is legendary in magic and ranks alongside those of Chan Canasta and Al Koran.

What a showman Maurice Fogel was! He was definitely one of the greats. A particularly personal memory I have of Maurice was at the I.B.M. British Ring Convention in Harrogate in 1977; in his show, he literally "gave himself away." He distributed raffle tickets into the audience. When the draw was made, the winner was given the opportunity of booking Maurice's full-evening stage show to benefit a charity of the winner's choice completely free of charge.

The raffle was won by Rae Hammond, who by chance managed the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham in England. It was a lovely Victorian theatre and perfect for Maurice's show.
Maurice asked me if I would act as the emcee for the show and also assist him on stage in a gag, a spoof on Uri Geller. He didn't need to ask me twice - I jumped at the chance.
While offstage, Maurice was rather like an absent-minded professor. Onstage he was the consummate professional; it was a wonderful experience for me and a real lesson on how to treat and work an audience.

Maurice Fogel was a true master of his craft; along with Reveen, he was one of the greatest showmen I have ever seen.

The other performer I'm featuring was Rovi. He was the original Welsh wizard. Born on November 29, 1919, in Caernarfon, his real name was Ivor Parry (Rovi is Ivor spelled backwards). To say that Rovi was a one-off would be an understatement!

Rovi worked for a newspaper in Wales, but his passion was magic. He was a wonderful hospitality, walk-around, and table magician. Predominantly, Rovi was a card man. He rarely used any other props (occasionally he performed the Colour Changing Penknives and even more occasionally he performed the Knife through Coat).

But it was with a deck of cards that Rovi excelled. He didn't use the highest quality Bicycle cards; he was perfectly content with the cheaper and better known Waddington cards, and he could hold his own with the best in the business.

Over the last forty years I have booked dozens of close-up magicians to entertain at various corporate events, gala dinners and charity fundraising events, and, in my opinion, Rovi was without a shadow of doubt, quite simply the BEST and in a class of his own.

With his broad Welsh accent, he would launch himself on the unsuspecting guests and address the first lady he approached with his famous opening line, "Are you married, or happy?"

His magic blew people away; his relaxed and entertaining style masked his quite remarkable technique. He would classic force cards, mostly behind his back. Even though he succeeded most of the time, it didn't bother him at all if he missed because he had fifty-two outs! The audience never had a clue. Invariably, he would also feature his trademark effect, the Card on the Forehead.

Rovi didn't drive a car, so he travelled non-stop around the UK by train, often at all hours of the day and night so he could perform for anybody and everybody. I remember on more than one occasion when I had booked him, he arrived at the gig at least two hours early. By the time the event started, Rovi had already entertained the kitchen staff, the cleaners, and in fact anybody he could find who would watch him!

Occasionally, my clients weren't too happy about this, but he was unstoppable and totally irrepressible. Everyone just loved having him entertain at their event.

Rovi was also a fantastic ballroom dancer. At a few very high end corporate gala dinners that I booked him for, he grabbed a lady guest from the top table and spun her around the dance floor, much to her surprise but obvious enjoyment. Only Rovi could have got away with that!

Rovi's wife Minnie rarely came to any events that Rovi performed at, preferring to remain at their home in Wales. Minnie, who was from Northern Ireland, was lovely and very quietly spoken, but when the two of them were arguing, with Rovi speaking in his broad Welsh accent and Minnie in her heavy Northern Irish accent, it was hilarious (and impossible to understand a single word they were saying).

When Rovi died unexpectedly on June 8, 1996, the world lost a real character and a true wizard.

They don't make them like Rovi anymore!

10. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

'Memories - Friends and Acquaintances - Past and Present'. Incidentally, the dates are accurate - I still have my 1965 diary which I found floating in the seemingly inexhaustible depths of my 'bottomless' aluminium trunk. I discovered, for instance, that on the Thursday 30th December, I had performed two shows at Mount Maunganui. One at the Soundshell and the other, later that night at the 'Peter Pan Cabaret', another club which was owned by Auckland promoter Dave Dunningham. According to the diary, both venues featured my hypnotism shows. It was a busy, lucrative time during those wonderful years. Rotorua one night, Mount Maunganui the next, then back to Rotorua; the Sixties were a very special era - a moment of time that will never be repeated.

I really do feel sorry for the youth and entertainers of today. They can listen to the music of that period, but they will never live, feel or experience the heady atmosphere of 'being there', in those magical times of Rock'n'Roll, 'Flower Power' and smoky, 'Marijuana Laced' jazz clubs, like the 'Montmarte', now long gone, that used to be tucked away upstairs in a little back street in Auckland, behind the St. James Picture Theatre. I can still hear Marlene Tong hammering it out in there with, I think, 'The Mike Walker Trio'. I really am the nostalgic type and. I've digressed again, haven't I?

Sometime during the late sixties, early seventies, Lew Pryme bought Fullers Entertainment Bureau from Philip Warren. Sally says, " I originally worked for Lew at the Agency on a casual
basis but when I gave up the act with Peter Newberry, and went to England for a working holiday, Lew said, 'When you come back to New Zealand, do you want to come and work full-time"? "So Tom", said Sally, "That is how I came to work at Fullers".

During Sally's 'Show Biz' days, she was the Secretary of V.A.C. - the New Zealand 'Variety Artists Club' - at one stage she was also on the committee. She has received two Awards, one from the 'VAC', a 'Scroll Of Honour', and another from NEOA - the 'New Zealand Entertainment Operator's Association', which was started by Dave Dunningham and Phil Warren. Among other awards, they also originated the 'Entertainer of the Year' award. Sally said, "It was very nice to be recognised by my peers, but more importantly, I made lots of very good friends and perhaps, helped a few entertainers along the way.

There is so much that I can say about Mrs Sally Ann Metzger, nee Phillips. She is a lady whom anyone, male or female, would be proud to call - "My Friend". On a personal level, Sally has
always been there, whenever I have needed her, not only in my private life, but on a professional level as well. More often than not, she has, at a moment's notice, stepped in as my assistant, bringing to bear all her charm and stage professionalism that comes naturally, from her 'Show Biz' heritage.

I thank you - love you Sally, for an everlasting friendship that has survived the inexorable, trickling sands that for nearly half a century, have fallen into 'the glass of time'!

Tommy
