3. Magical Women With Connie Boyd
--------------------------------------------
Message by Peter Phillips (UK)

Julie Eng's magical life is unique. She was born into a family where magic was a mainstream existence.

She appeared on stage, magically, before she could walk. Her father a very respected magician, Tony Eng, mentored and cherished Julie's passion for magic. He taught her everything he could and then "pushed her out of the nest" and into a new exciting world working for David Ben and then Magicana where she is now the Executive Director and continues to work closely with David.

Magical Women would like to thank Magicana for allowing us to use footage from their web-site and libraries. Magicana: https://www.magicana.com

Message by Craig Petty

I am absolutely honoured that Marvin Berglas from Marvin's Magic agreed to appear on Magic TV. I have a lot of respect for Marvin. He is a true entrepreneur whilst still holding onto his passion for magic. He has built a global empire which continues to be just as successful today.
In this interview Marvin doesn't hold back. He talks about growing up the son of one of the most famous magicians of all time. He talks about how he started Marvin's Magic and how he grew it from very humble beginnings to a global company.

Along the way he gives solid practical advice for magicians. How to create a brand, how to market yourself, how to stand out and how to deal and cope with adversity.

This is one of the most inspirational and motivational interviews I've uploaded yet and it should be required viewing for every magician.

Here's the link. Let me know what you think in the comments.

6. Simon Drake's House Of Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Simon Drake (UK)

After a year of staring at the wall, abandoning badly dubbed Netflix shows and rather disastrously acting simultaneously as a hairdresser and customer, I snapped out of my trance and ventured forth to delve deep into the archives in the cellar below my early Victorian theatre, Simon Drake's House of Magic, where original documents, plans and faded facsimiles are stored. These go into details of the formation of my work over 40 years in this industry and 25 years of running a busy theatre in London entirely devoted to magic and illusion for private, corporate and public events and the occasional Bar mitzvah.

I am therefore pleased to announce that I have launched a Patreon page which includes enthralling videos, rare and fascinating ephemera detailing secrets of The Secret Cabaret, mysteries of the spirits of The House of Magic, an on stage tribute to Teller, and my hero worship of the one and only Kardor.

Patreon being a secure subscription interface seems the ideal medium for showing and discussing the many previously unseen videos of many original illusions. There is a special section for magicians ONLY in which many secrets, methods and the thinking behind the work is explained.

Here's the advert I made which I enjoyed immensely (let me know if you need one made as I got the bug and now want to make more!)
https://youtu.be/CcIm37Fvl-U

And here's the Patreon page:
https://www.patreon.com/SimonDrake

Also featured will be my work with the likes of: Iron Maiden, Oliver Reed, Harvey Keitel, Nic Roeg, Julian Lennon, Alexander McQueen, Katy Perry, Kate Bush, Richard Garriott, Terry Gilliam, George Harrison, Kenneth Branagh, Christopher Plummer, Andrew Garfield and Peter O'Toole as well as my shows and informal chats with much missed HRH Diana, Princess of Wales.

PS: Catch me on 31st March where I will be chatting live in the excellent 'Conjuror Community'.

8. Simplex Premonition - John Carey #114
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

I've always loved the premise of Eddie Joseph's Premonition effect where a card is named, shown not to be in the deck and is subsequently revealed in an envelope, wallet or from the pocket. It's a strong effect. I wanted a simple and practical fix with just one regular deck that could be done on the fly. I've substituted a named card for a mental selection and the results have been very satisfying.

Ahead of time take out the Ten of Diamonds from your deck and place it back outwards inside your wallet. On top of your deck have any black Ten and on the bottom a low valued Diamond. False shuffle retaining the positions of the top and bottom cards as you introduce the subject of
Premonition. Table the face down deck. Ask a spectator to cut off about half and hand it to you. Run the black Ten on top to the bottom with an overhand shuffle and then retain it there with a slip shuffle. Slip shuffle once more and ask them to call out stop. Square up this packet and table it to the right of the other packet.

"Nicola, in a moment I want you to put the thought of a card in your mind. A card is made up of a value and a suit." Ask her to pick up the packet with the ten on the bottom and peek the bottom card and remember just the value. Have her table that packet and pick up the remaining packet
and peek at the bottom card of this packet and remember and visualize just the suit. "Please combine the value and suit to form a random card in your mind." Take your time with this so she understands.

So we've done all the 'work' and she's thinking of the Ten of Diamonds. Have the spectator gather up the cards and shuffle the deck. Take it back from them and mention you will deal the cards face up to the table and count them and all she has to do is remember the position of her thought of card. When you get to the end of dealing and counting Fifty One cards you look at the spectator in a puzzled expression. "One is missing. Did you see the card that resides merely in your mind?" She will say no of course. Ask the lady to call out the card she is thinking of and then open your wallet as you mention a Premonition you had earlier. Take the card out and reveal!

9. No Stone Unturned - Paul Stone - Article #6

Message by Paul Stone (US)

Blackpool is a well-known and popular British seaside resort. It is pretty much closed until Easter. In the winter, it can be very cold and windy. But it definitely comes alive for one weekend every February when the Blackpool Magicians Club hold their annual convention.

Last week I talked about the three 2020 convention Gala Shows. Some conventioneers were disappointed not to see Lance Burton perform the bird act that made him famous and that was his trademark for so many years on the Las Vegas Strip.

There were a number of reasons why Lance wasn't able to do so. For a start it was ten years since Lance had retired from his record-breaking show at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. So he had not performed his classic bird act for a long period of time.

And, in any case, even if he had still been regularly working the act, due to the new restrictions on bringing livestock into the country, the only option would have been to borrow doves. With no time to rehearse with them, it would have been an impossibility.

However, the convention's final night Gala Show did feature a bird act, and what a bird act it was!

Over the past 40 years as a show producer I have booked several bird acts including some of the best in the business like Johnny Thompson. As technically brilliant as Johnny was, and with total respect to Lance, in my humble opinion, the greatest bird act of all is Marko Karvo.

When I say that his act is the greatest bird act, I need to qualify that remark. Marko Karvo is the greatest 'commercial' bird act that I have ever seen.

Marko Karvo, superbly assisted by his beautiful wife Vanessa, has a commanding stage presence. He looks like a cross between Fred Kaps and Channing Pollock, and his act is choreographed to perfection.

With an almost statuesque presentation, his manipulation and bird productions cleverly build throughout the act, culminating in the surprise appearance of a cockatoo and a huge multi coloured exotic bird which then proceeds to fly around the auditorium before returning and landing perfectly on Marko's outstretched arm.

In print, that doesn't sound too exciting, but believe me, in reality it is quite simply the most stunning visual magic.

I have previously mentioned the Variety shows that I've produced at the world famous London Palladium Theatre, and I will doubtless do so again in my future articles. In the show that I produced there to honour John Calvert in 2011, Marko Karvo was the closing act of the first half of the show.

To my mind it was Marko's finest hour. On that night his performance was inspired and flawless and, at the end of his act, the whole audience stood as one and gave him a three minute standing ovation.

This was something that rarely happens in a British theatre and was thoroughly deserved. It was another 'goosebump' moment, and one I'll never forget.

There was another unique event that I, together with Lance Burton and his Friends experienced thanks to one of the Blackpool convention organisers, Russ Brown.

The resort is famous for its Blackpool Tower which opened to the public in May 1894 and was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This impressive structure houses an outstanding and famous circus, roof gardens and the most wonderful Ballroom designed by Frank Matcham, the architect who designed the London Palladium Theatre.

Without photos it is impossible to describe the grandeur and magnificence of this vast Ballroom, adorned from floor to ceiling with incredible hand painted murals, and with spectacular crystal chandeliers.

This Victorian Ballroom runs tea dances every weekend for anyone who enjoys Ballroom dancing, and the massive dance floor is always packed with couples of all abilities enjoying dancing to music enthusiastically played on an authentic Wurlitzer organ.

Russ had organised a table for the twelve of us to partake of High Tea, and Lance entered into the spirit of things by joining in several line dances. You had to be there … and I do have video evidence to prove it! Needless to say, we all had a great time.

The day after the convention I'd booked a tour bus and I escorted Lance and Friends to my home city of Liverpool, only an hour's drive from Blackpool. It was our very own Magical Mystery Tour.

We visited the iconic Cavern Club where the Beatles started out by playing over 200 shows, and also Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields, and we even took a short trip on the Mersey ferry, made famous by Gerry and the Pacemakers' hit record 'Ferry Cross the Mersey'.

The day was a different kind of magic, but an unforgettable way to end a memorable trip.

10. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

A Close Miss And A 'Hypnotic Command'

The expense that I go to, verifying incidents from my distant murky past, knows no bounds. Case in point - I telephoned my brother in law Robert (better known as Bob around Whakatane - he is Veronica's (my wife brother), in New Zealand the other day! I'm going to wander off course a bit now, but what follows is relevant, sort of, to the: 'Incident At Whakatane'! Sounds like one of those old matinee 'Yippee' cowboy and Indian westerns, that we all used to watch on Saturday afternoon down at the local cinema/ 'flea house'!

Picture this. A young, good looking chap about 5ft 8in, stocky build and as strong as an ox - make that two, who went through all the horrors of the Vietnam war, luckily coming out of it unscathed (although many of his mates didn't), whose idea to settle an argument was to simply knock you out with a single punch, no matter if you were ten feet tall and built like a brick shithouse! That's Robert!

Veronica and I tied the knot on Tuesday 1st June 1976. That afternoon, at our home in Whakatane, a small gathering of friends and relatives got together for drinks etc and as usual, Magic, the 'Sleight of Hand' sort, started - well I am a magician! My dad took umbrage to this and an almighty argument ensued. Dear me, it was our wedding day, is nothing sacred! Apparently, my mouth and tongue were in high gear, as was my father's, so - Robert decided it was time to 'Settle The Argument'!

Now I'm not sure if it was out of respect for an older man, (my father), or not, but Robert unleashed his infamous one punch 'Knockout Drop' straight for MY jaw. According to Veronica, I, without missing a beat, or a word, shifted my head fractionally to one side and Robert's missile laden fist, loaded with a 'deadly warhead', streaked harmlessly past my ear. Veronica says she will never forget the look on Robert's face, as he gazed disbelievingly at the offending fist, and muttered to himself 'I missed - I can't believe it - I missed'! Now that was a digression, but, it does demonstrate Robert's idea of - 'Keeping The Peace'.

It's Christmas Eve - 1972/1973, Robert is not sure which. Sometime after midnight, Robert decided that we should take a 'cruise' around the town and have a 'nosey', as you do, or did, in those days. The town was quiet so Robert drove back up the main street heading for the family home (Veronica and I were, naturally, staying there for Xmas). About half way up we saw that a police car had pulled in and two police officers were trying to get two Maori 'fella's' into the back of the police car - without much luck, they were putting up a hell of a struggle (Unlike the Australian and American police, the NZ police are unarmed, as in the UK as well). Without hesitation, Robert pulls in behind the police car - deciding whether to give them a hand or not. He had many friends in the Whakatane police force - he went to school with many of them.

His mind was made up for him! One second the street was empty, the next, a whole tribe of Maoris - well that's what it seemed like, suddenly 'appeared' from out of nowhere. It was amazing. They must have come out of the woodwork! I'm guessing, but I would estimate that there was 20 or 30 of them. They attacked the two 'coppers'. Without hesitation, Robert leaped out to give them a hand. Within seconds, Robert's in the middle of them, dropping Maoris left, right and centre - Robert just 'loved' a good scrap! I sat in the car, 'Crapping' myself. I knew that if I was to jump in there, I wouldn't last a second - besides, Veronica and I had a hypnotism show coming up on Boxing night, two nights away. Imagine the scenario - "I want you to look into my eye, you can't miss it - nobody else did - it's on the back of my head, all swollen up, just below the other deformed one"! "You are getting sleepy" etc.…

To my horror, I saw an arm go up - with a beer bottle clutched in the hand; It smashed, full force, down on Robert's head - he dropped like a stone! To this day, I cannot remember getting out of the car, or what was going on in my head, I just found myself standing on the footpath, and then I heard myself say - No, No, No, It Was - A 'Command' ! "Hold It"! Instantly, the Maori boys, the police, the entire tableau - Froze! It was as if time itself had stopped, and the only thing that was moving, was me - as I stepped around and over bodies to reach Robert, who was 'flat out' on the ground! NOBODY moved a muscle, not a word was spoken as I helped Robert to his feet.

You could have heard a pin drop! I got him over to his car and pushed him into the passenger seat - leaped around into the driver's seat and started the car. Then, and only then, the 'Spell' - that is the only word I can call it, was broken! All hell broke loose! They began to surround the car, kicking it and the doors - strangely, nobody tried to open them - as I drove off. Somehow, during that distraction, the police had managed to handcuff the lads, finally getting them into their police car, and off, ahead of us!

I have no real explanation for what happened that night. In those days, I was doing an awful lot of hypnotism shows, and I'm quite convinced that that is what was involved. As many Stage Hypnotists will confirm, you do develop, after a period of time, what can only be described as a 'hypnotic voice'. You know you can influence - that you can hypnotize, and that calm certainty reaches out to those you are seeking to influence, even subconsciously, and has the desired effect. It's all to do with a positive state of mind. Well, that is what Franquin taught me, via his wonderful book: 'Open Your Mind' - my 'bible'!

While I'm on the subject of hypnotism, I've just recalled an amusing episode (Although it wasn't as far as Robert was concerned - in fact he became quite upset, I'm not surprised really), involving Robert and his mother - my mother in law, Vera. She was Scottish through and through, and the most delightful woman you could ever hope to meet. All those old 'Mother In law Jokes' just didn't apply where she was concerned. Not only that, she just 'loved' my magic, in fact she loved anything to do with 'Show-Biz'. At the drop of a hat she would pull out her mandolin and start up a 'sing song' with Veronica, or anybody else who was present, joining in. I kept my mouth shut - I can't even whistle in tune, let alone sing! Having gotten herself into the mood, she would grab the telephone and, before you knew it, an impromptu party was in progress. Oh happy days!

She would always 'egg me on' to do something and on this particular occasion she said: "Let's see you hypnotize somebody - Robert, let's see if Tom can put YOU under"! Now Robert hates being 'put on the spot' at any time, and apart from that, he thought, then - that hypnotism was all a big fake anyway. Here WAS a challenge - an out and out sceptic, who was also, utterly 'pissed off' for being singled out as 'The Victim'!

Robert's idea of 'hypnotism' to put somebody to sleep - was to 'whack' them with one, pile driving 'haymaker'! He glared at me; his eyes said it all - 'I Dare You, You -- xxx**??! 'Death', was staring me in the face! "Don't be silly Mum" Robert said, "I'm not doing that"! "Aw go on," she said, "Give it a go - you're not scared are you"? Now that was calculating, she knew that Robert wasn't 'scared' of anything. Robert 'knew' that nothing would happen and he would
get his 'revenge' at seeing me fail, dismally and, make an utter fool of myself. He sat down. "Do your worst", he said.

In my Stage Show, I used to delight in getting very 'stroppy' sceptics in the audience. Once I've gotten them on stage - they have entered my 'playground' as it were. I had several psychological
techniques on hand, and more often than not, within a minute or two, they would finish up on the floor, slumbering at my feet - but this was in the kitchen/dining room - no atmospherics here! I was already drafting out excuses in my head - It was rather 'off putting', with Robert glaring at me!

Sometimes, you really do have to believe that 'Something', is looking out for you! Robert reluctantly followed my requests to 'put his feet flat on the floor, hands on his knees, relax and take in two or three slow, deep breaths' then - I started the hypnotic induction. Within seconds, he was out! I couldn't believe it. He was a 'Dream' subject. I was, to say the least, elated! After various tests, I asked 'Mum' if there was anything she would like him 'to do'. She said, "Tell him that I'm going to challenge him to an arm wrestle, can you fix it so he loses"? "No problem" I replied.

After giving Robert the appropriate suggestions, and telling him that he would have no memory of ever having been hypnotized, I woke him up. "See", he said, "I told you it wouldn't work, it's all a big fake", he gleefully announced to everyone. "How about an arm wrestle", says his Mother? "Aw Mum, don't be silly", said Robert, obviously embarrassed by the ridiculous suggestion, but finally, at her insistence, Robert gave in. Proud of his strength and prowess,
he gently took his mother's hand and, equally as gentle, applied a little pressure. Shock and disbelief chased each other across his face, as his mother pushed his arm and hand down onto the table.

"Let's do it again" Mum says, and again, the back of Robert's hand hit the table. He became very upset - and it wasn't funny anymore, so I told him that I had actually hypnotized him. He refused to believe it, so I said, "Look Robert, I'll prove it. Go and fill a glass of cold water from the tap and bring it back here". He did so, whereupon I said, " Now take a sip to make sure it really is water", which he did, then I said to him, " The next sip that you drink, you will find that it has become - 'Straight Whiskey", touching him on the forehead as I did so. "Bullshit" he said, unceremoniously, as he took a Big Drink, to 'prove' me wrong. Instantly, he was 'Drunk', and feeling very sick - I didn't know it then, but Robert and Whiskey don't mix! Robert believes in hypnotism these days, and woe betide anyone foolish enough to say, "It's all a load of bull"!

To be continued.
