3. Harrison Greenbaum On The Magic Word Podcast
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Many in our field consider themselves to be comedy magicians and many, like Mac King among others, are indeed funny magicians. But this week's guest on The Magic Word Podcast is both a comedian and a magician separately plus he is a comedy magician, too. Harrison Greenbaum is known best among the general public as a stand-up comedian who appears in comedy clubs, television and theaters including the Sydney Opera House.

Standing behind a single microphone and using nothing but his wits, improvisation and scripted comedy, Harrison is truly a funny guy. But he has serious magic chops on stage as a creative magician who takes a standard trick and breathes new life and comedy into something that becomes uniquely his. This week Harrison talks about his comedy career and how it intersected with magic.

You can listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts. But for more information, videos, photos, and to enter the new contests, please visit: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/589-harrison-greenbaum

This week we congratulate Steve Sabo and Jeffrey Cowan as the winners of our recent contest who won a hard copy of "No Ordinary Magic" by Eileen McFalls detailing her life on the road with the late great street magician, Cellini.

Also this week we start two more contests, one of which is open exclusively to our international listeners.

7. 80th Anniversary Of Ottokar Fischer
-------------------------------------------
Message by Magic Christian (Vienna)

It is always great December 1st the 80th anniversary of Ottokar Fischer's death we celebrated here in Vienna in the Magic Club of Vienna. He was the Doyen of Vienna's magic and the first who wrote about J.N. Hofzinser. If you want I will send you a short bio. I am writing a book about him and I am looking for copies of any letters he wrote in his life as he was in contact with a lot of magicians around the world. If you have any letters I would appreciate hearing from you. He had a street named after him in Vienna in 2017! I was fortunate enough to manage it with the mayor of Vienna.

The English editions of my Hofzinser books plus ultra volume 3 and 4 will be soon out. We are finishing the last correction on the layout at the moment. As the volumes 1 and 2 are sold out already I can only advise everybody who is interested to write to the Conjuring Art Center for a reservation as there is only a limited edition again.

8. Broken Wand - Joe Kardwell
-------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)

Joe Kardwell passed away suddenly on November 7, 2020, at his home. His beloved wife of 46 years, Nancy Kardwell, was with him during his final moments. Joe was 84 years old. He was a 67-year member of the Society of American Magicians.

Born and raised in Manhattan, Joe was a professional magician from his late teens through his early 30s, performing on Caribbean cruise ships, in major New York City hotels and in other venues in the U.S., Canada and Bermuda. Joe appeared on many TV programs, including "The Ed Sullivan Show", "The Paul Winchell Show" and "Sesame Street" during its earliest days. Later, he was the creator and publisher of the original Magic Magazine.

Joe Kardwell had a successful bird act in the 1950's. With Joe in his white tie and tails and his assistant in a light dress, two silks in her hand became a bird. Two rosettes on her dress were pulled apart to produce several silks and another bird. Lighted candles and canes and a newspaper produced more birds. And so it went until their flashy finish.

After his time in magic Joe pursued an over-50-year career as an entrepreneur. He was founder and president of Magic for Madison Avenue, which provided products and performers for magic-themed sales promotions .and special-event magic productions. Joe established JKI Inc., a rare stamp investment company.

9. Consistent Thoughts - John Carey #104
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/

Consistent thoughts is my approach to the classic two card mental effect that uses the one ahead concept. Many have tackled this plot with some great work, including Ed Marlo and Simon Aronson. I wanted an approach which was consistent in the selection procedure. You spread the faces of a deck in front of one spectator and they think of a card and then you repeat that with a second spectator. In other words, no deviation in the manner of selection.

There is a very slight bit of advanced preparation. Take out a picture card, say Jack of Hearts and place it about a third of the way down into the deck. The top twenty or so cards must all be number cards, except the JH. The other picture cards should be on the bottom of the deck with a number card covering them on the face. It's actually quite simple to casually get into position on the fly, in between effects if you wish to go that route.

"Shannon and Ava, today we will try an experiment with your minds. Don't worry though, I'm not a psychiatrist. I was once examined and the guy told me I was psychoceramic. Yes that's right, a crackpot! Now there are two types of card guys. Numbers and pictures. Shannon, as I spread these cards in front of you simply think of a number card you see. Got one? Now Ava, I will repeat that with you and ask you to think of a picture card that you see. So basically it's like I've just walked into this place and you are both thinking of cards that truly nobody in the world could possibly know."

So let's examine what we need to do as per the above script/outline. Raise the deck in the hands up to the first spectator and spread about thirty cards or so from the top and ask him to think of a number card. Then address your second helper and ask her to think of any picture card she sees. Of course she will only get the opportunity to see and think of the Jack of Hearts due to our prior planning. I then cut the deck and complete

the cut and execute a casual faro shuffle, destroying any evidence... "Lock those thoughts into your minds guys. Shannon, we will work with you first. Think about the colour of your card. Now the suit and finally the value. I think I'm getting something! In fact, I will make a commitment and take out a card and place it face down onto the table. Now you need to commit and tell us all what card you merely thought of? The Seven of Spades? A totally free choice. Ava, concentrate and look at me. Send me your thoughts. I'm seeing red and I'm also seeing Hearts. Does that mean anything to you? It does?! I will commit once more and take out a card and set it down with the other one."

Let's look at this phase of the effect. We address spectator one and after some interaction I spread the deck with the faces towards me and take out the Jack of Hearts- spectator two's thought of card. I then table it face down. I ask him to commit and name his card. Let's say he said Six of Clubs. I act calm and confident and then address my second helper. I ask her to try and send me her thoughts. I correctly divine the suit and colour of her card and then take out, sight unseen the Six of Clubs- spectator ones card. A classic one ahead gambit. Drop this card haphazardly on top of the other tabled card.

Before we conclude the effect, a little time misdirection or shift of focus is sensible. Comment on how two cards were merely thought of. Nothing was written down and those cards merely reside in their minds. You can spread the deck as you do this if you wish. The right hand descends upon
the two tabled cards and slides them towards you. Hold them squared and back outwards. Ask both spectators to extend a palm up hand. Take the number card and place it face down onto the first spectators hand. Put the picture card onto the other person's hand. Have both thought of
cards named and then have both cards turned face up to reveal that their thoughts were yours too!

11. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Kids Xmas Shows and, Abe Phillips - A Eulogy!

Like most professional magicians etc. in New Zealand during the sixties, particularly Auckland City, most of my work was derived from local nightspots/Cabaret shows, private parties and shopping centres. Doing kid shows during December was particularly lucrative, when all the various firms/factories put on their Staff/Children's Christmas parties. I called it the 'Ratrace' Time!

Every weekend saw you criss-crossing - racing across Auckland City like a demented maniac, on a stinking hot summers day, going from one Christmas party to another, with barely enough time to get from one to the other. You could be booked for anything up to 10 - 20 shows a day, starting at 9 am and, having finished that lot, you then had your evening shows! I always had somebody else to do the driving while I, sizzling in the boiling heat, was in the back seat frantically resetting the magic gear ready for the next show. Yes, it was good money but, I hated it and, all the 'skiting' that went on - " I've Done 'X' More Shows Than You . More Money."Etc. etc. It made me sick!

Thankfully, I gradually 'weaned' myself out of that 'Rat Race', when I moved onto the Hotel circuit (Which was the exclusive providence of Pop Bands and Singers), where the remuneration for just one show a night for two nights work could be worth the same as a whole day of ten or more maddening Kid shows and the frustratingly inherent working conditions! 'Yes'!!!

One of the first, if not the first Hotel I worked, around 1968/9, was the 'Mayfair Hotel', in Hastings (On the East coast of the North Island - Hawkes Bay, 20 kilometres south of Napier), which was owned by Bill Franseen, and managed by Peter Bure - both Dutchmen. As far as
I know, I was the First, and Only speciality artist to 'crack' and hold this market for years throughout New Zealand although, I do have an old advert. From 1970, showing Silvia Sevana - fire dancer and myself together, at the 'Mayfair Hotel'! My last performance at the Mayfair in the Carousel Lounge Bar was on Monday, June the 7th, 1976 - just one month before Veronica and I left for Fiji/Australia. I was recently informed that the Hotel no longer exists. It is truly a sad thing when you discover that one of your favourite old haunts/ stamping ground, is - 'No More'!

The 'Shadracks' were the band at the 'Mayfair,' actually, it's an injustice to say that they were 'just a band' - Showband is more like it, they were fantastic! Each member could play the others musical instrument and, they could all sing! I remember Tom Greening, who was the group's brilliant drummer - playing exhilarating, exciting solos that had the crowd screaming for more, as did his deep singing voice! But the chap who really brought the house down was their featured
vocalist: - 'Big' Abe Phillips To Whom This Episode And The Next, Is Dedicated!

For years, various promoters had tried, without success, to 'sign' Abe up, because they knew that he, and his incredible voice, had the potential for - Worldstage 'Superstardom'! Abe Wasn't Interested In 'Fame And Fortune'! Abe was quite happy working as a slaughterman at the Whakutu freezing works with his mates, and singing with the 'Shadracks' at the Mayfair Hotel, which is how we met and became friends, not surprising really - I practically 'lived' at the Mayfair, off and on, for a time! Abe was a big, strong, well - built individual, a gentle unassuming family man - and naturally friendly, as most Maoris are. What A Magnficent Voice He Possessed - It Was Pure Magic!!!

The year is now 1971, it is November and Veronica and I have gone to see the 'Grand Finale' of the 'Schweppes' $2000 talent quest that was being held at the massive 'Thunderbird Valley Inn' at Glenfield (On Auckland City's North Shore - over the Harbour bridge), which was incidentally, another one of my regular gigs - Haaa, memories of the Voodoo Girls' (Remember, Sally?), I'll tell you about that one later!
