3. The Magic Word Podcast - Stan Allen and Magic Conventions
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

While at the recent S.A.M. National Convention in Las Vegas, we sat down with MAGIC Live! convention organizer, Stan Allen, to talk about conventions. This is not an extended advertisement about his convention, but rather a look at the history of magic conventions, where we are now, and where we might be going.

We also chat about lower attendance for some conventions while others are growing. But the meat of this discussion is Stan's look at what it takes to make a magic convention successful, the "Four C's": City, Content, Cost and Community. This is an interesting look at magic conventions for both attendees and organizers alike.

You can listen to this episode wherever you get your podcasts, but we suggest to visit our website where there is additional content plus you can subscribe to our weekly pod-letter. Visit the site at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/545-stan-allen

Exemplary Human Being

Scots comedy legend Jerry Sadowitz has paid tribute to the owner of Tam Shepherds after his death.

Roy Walton, the man behind the famous trick and joke shop in the centre of Glasgow, passed away aged 87.

A message was posted on the shop's official Facebook page yesterday morning.
It said: "We are so very sad to have to let all our friends know that Roy died peacefully this morning".

Now comedian and magician Sadowitz has paid his own tribute to Walton, hailing him as an "exemplary human being".

He said on Twitter: "Very upset to hear that my friend and hero Roy Walton has died.
"The greatest card magician and the most exemplary human being I ever knew.
"Real giants move quietly among us and this one managed Tam Shepherd's Joke Shop in Glasgow for fifty years.

"Devastated".
The shop, on Queen Street, shop was first established in 1886 by Tam Shepherd.
It's been run by the Walton family, including Roy's wife Jean and their kids, for over 75 years.
Tributes have now flooded in for the joke shop owner on social media.

8. Ongoing Adventures Of Romany!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Romany Romany (UK)

I'm going to jump in and tell you about my current, right now, right this very minute adventure!
I'm writing to you at nearly midnight. I'm leaving early tomorrow morning to fly from London to Fiji to perform my evening stage show, MC a talent night and then deliver a brand new keynote speech to 250 women who will be at the 'Ultimate Girls Week Away Retreat' in Fjii.

I know I should have written this earlier but I've been working non-stop on my new keynote, sitting friends down one at a time to listen to it and give feedback. I'll print out the final version ready to learn on the plane. It will be fresh if nothing else!

The keynote speaker is Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love and other books. If you're a man, you've probably never heard of her but she is admired and followed by millions of women. She has a great Ted talk on creativity and wrote an amazing book called Big Magic which I highly recommend. You won't find instructions on a double lift but you will find true inspiration to 'dare to live your creative dreams'.

I read it in one hit, and the next morning started writing. When I published my book, I wanted to gift it to Liz as a thank you and jumped off my cruise ship to travel to her workshop in London to do just that last year.

But the receptionist wouldn't let me in with the huge bunch of golden balloons that I was carrying, so it seemed to be an expensive wasted trip. But I'm a great believer in the power of persistence. After all, it took me 17 years of persistence to win my first competition and get a decent magic act together after I went to my first magic class aged 26.

So when I saw an advert for this Fiji retreat with Liz Gilbert as the VIP keynote speaker, I wrote to the organiser to offer my magic show. I asked, "If a magician who was inspired by Liz's Big Magic to write a book about magic, then failed to give Liz her book after jumping off a cruise ship but then flew half way around the world to Fiji to do a show and talk about the magical power of persistence, wouldn't that be interesting?"

I'm going.

And here I am at midnight, 99% packed except for that torn and restorn newspaper that I ALWAYS leave to the last minute to make, grrrr!

I'll write next week from Fiji, almost in Alan's backyard, and let you know how I'm getting on!

9. Gemini SMS - John Carey #70

Message by John Carey (UK)

Karl Fulves' Gemini Twins is a classic of self working card magic. So beautifully simple and equally strong. My presentation offered here was totally inspired by Peter Duffie's beautiful effect called 4-Some from his eBook 4 Most.

To prepare, take a photograph on your phone of the Ace of Clubs, Four of Hearts and the Seven of Spades lying in a face up row on the table. Take your deck of cards and place two of these cards on top of the deck and the other card on the bottom. You can preset or quite easily set
these cards on the fly between tricks. Execute an in-the-hands riffle shuffle retaining the position of your force cards on top and bottom. Hand the deck to a spectator. Ask for their mobile phone number and send them the photograph but ask them not to look at the message you have sent them just yet.

Ask your helper to use their intuition and start dealing cards back and forth into two packets on the table. After about ten cards have been dealt, ask them to stop dealing using their intuitive sense. Once they have stopped dealing ask them to turn the top card of each packet face-up. If any coincidences or interesting cards show: make the most of it! Request that they drop the deck on top of either packet and then drop those combined cards on top of the other packet and then pick up the deck. Almost as an afterthought mention that they do say all good things come in threes, so would they deal some more cards, this time into a single face down packet. Ask them to turn the top card of this packet face-up and then drop the rest of the deck on top and square up.

From a method point of view the work is done, but the perception is that the effect hasn't really started. Ribbon spread the face down deck and comment on how they dealt the cards and stopped at three random locations and marked those locations with the three face up cards in view.
Remove each face-up marker card and the card on top of it and table each pair in a row. Ask your helper to pick up their phone and open up the message you sent them earlier, revealing a photograph of the Ace of Clubs, Four of Hearts and Seven of Spades. Get them to call out each
card in the photograph. Then turn over each face down card on top of its face up marker card to reveal a triple coincidence!

Notes:

Another nice option is to take a photograph of yourself holding the three cards and use it in your social media. Good publicity!

14. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Dr. Robert (Tex) "The Great" Morton plus Orchante

Before I relate my experiences with 'Tex', here are a few more facts about this fascinating man. Robert Morton was best known overseas (as opposed to New Zealand and Australia), as the 'Great Morton; - one of the greatest attractions ever to tour the World's legitimate Theatres - including Carnegie Hall, New York. Throughout the Universities of Canada and the U.S., he was well known as a learned research worker, and lecturer in the field of psychosomatic and Hypnotic Therapy.

Because of his lifetime hobby of collecting Folk songs, he is still fondly remembered by older New Zealanders and Australians, under his nickname 'Tex', entertainer extraordinaire. Since 1934, he was an Entrepreneur and Producer/Promoter of some of the most successful radio
and stage productions Australasia has ever seen.

In the middle/late thirties, no stage Hypnotist was complete without a beard - Tex was no exception. At one stage, he shaved his off, but when he later did a return tour to French Canada he was obliged to grow it again, as the 'Canadians' stubbornly refused to believe he was the
original 'Le Grande Morton - Hypnotiser'!!

The late Walter Braemer, of Auckland, New Zealand, was one of his early tutors, who in later years claimed to have also taught other well-known hypnotists of the time - Franquin, Van Loewe and Dormia (she was billed as 'the World's First Lady Hypnotist'). Franquin denies, however, ever having taken any lessons from 'the Old Master'. PHEW!! And there's more!

The 'Tex Morton Show' with Orchante - Opening Night - Mon.13th November 1967, Kaitaia, 8.30 p.m. The show consisted of, first half, Tex singing, reciting monologues, sharp shooting, and his Memory act, interspersed with my Yoga, and Magic acts.

The second half was all Hypnotism! Tex liked a drink. Always, backstage, was a bottle of whisky, from which he would imbibe when I was on stage. How did I know that? Well, the very first night, he caught me right off guard - knowing that I was also a Hypnotist in my own right, he took full advantage of that fact. Having got his volunteers on stage - performed his various 'tests', 'popped them off', and got his show going, he then, out of the blue, stops and announces to the audience that 'the Great Orchante, whom they saw performing his marvellous feats in the first half, was also a hypnotist. Would they please welcome back, on stage, the aforementioned Great..........!!!'

I nearly fell over! In a mad scramble, I threw on the suit I used for my Magic act, and nonchalantly strolled on stage, as if this was the 'norm'. Tex shook my hand, leaned into my ear, and whispered 'Good on ya, Mate - I'm off for a drink.' He then tells his subjects 'From now on,
you will obey any and all instructions from the Great Orchante, until he tells you different'. Then, he left the stage. I carried on, using segments from my own Hypnotic show. After he had 'wet his whistle', he waved to me from the wings. I then told his subjects that Tex was again in control, welcomed him back on stage, and the Great Tex Morton finished off the show in style, with standing ovations, as befits a world famous entertainer.

I'll wager that was the first, and probably the last, two man Hypnotism show in history.

In an old newspaper dated 1967, I dug out from my bottomless aluminium trunk, there is an advert in the Entertainment pages. On the left hand side of the Advert, it shows a block of the smiling Tex, wearing his famous hat, and is headed 'Tex Morton plus The Great Orchante - Return Visit Tonight - Tonight - Friday November 17th, At 8.30 Pm, Whangarei Town Hall - One Night Only! Box Plans Completely Sold Out - Again! There are a few door sales left - these will be on sale from 7.30 pm. Saturday 18th - Dargaville' Tex's shows always packed out.

Next episode - Pot-Shots, With Tex! P.S On Page 22 of my Saga, titled 'It Was Fun-tastic' I wrote about Johnny Cooper, a New Zealand Promoter/Singer from the 50s/60s. I have just received an e-mail from Eddie O'Strange, of the Blue Smoke Music Co. in New Zealand, who says Quote 'I'm pleased to update you on Johnny Cooper QSM. Yes, in the Queen's Birthday Honours list Johnny was awarded the Queen's Service Medal for service to the community. There has been a bit of media attention, especially great was the front page article (with photo) in the Evening Post, Mon 4 June 2001.' Unquote.

I know Johnny, that you are reading my Saga, and I just want to say personally, how proud I am for you, as you must justifiably be. It is a well-deserved honour. Good on you mate!
