3. Teller Sidelined Again, So It's 'Penn & Friends'
In Las Vegas
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)
By
John Katsilometes Las Vegas Review-Journal
Teller
is famously silent onstage, but his back keeps talking to
him.
The nonverbal partner in "Penn & Teller" at
the Rio has once more been sidelined by back surgery. On
Thursday, the 71-year-old magician underwent his third spinal-fusion
procedure in 18 months, this one at Cedars-Sinai Medical
Center in Los Angeles.
Teller is expected to return around Super Bowl Sunday in
the first week of February. In his absence, Penn Jillette
is heading up a "Penn & Friends" lineup of
guest stars Mac King of Harrah's, Flamingo Las Vegas headliner
Piff the Magic Dragon and comedy writer-magician-podcast
trailblazer Matt Donnelly.
Those shows at Penn & Teller Theater begin Dec. 21-22,
with Jillette performing with King and Donnelly. Piff joins
the show from Dec. 23-Jan. 4.
Teller is said to be resting well at Cedars-Sinai, beginning
a six-to-eight week recovery process. He is expected to
return to the stage and also resume taping of The CE show
"Fool Us" in February.
Teller previously underwent surgery on his back in October,
canceling about two weeks' worth of shows. Teller was also
taken out of action for spinal-fusion surgery in July 2018,
taking the show down for a month.
This month, P&T production at the Rio has been dark
since Dec. 1, with Jillette attending the opening of the
comedy production "Magic Goes Wrong" at London's
Vaudeville Theatre on Saturday night. That show has set
advance-ticket sales records for the regal venue, which
opened in 1870.
Also off the books is Penn & Teller's tour of Australia
in January, including two weeks of sold-out shows at the
Sydney Opera House. The duo, stage partners since 1975,
are to mark their 19th anniversary at the Rio on Jan. 5.

4. Michael Godard, Artist On The Magic Word Podcast
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Happy
Christmas, everyone. This week we have a gift for you that
is not magical in the traditional way. This week we feature
a conversation with Michael Godard, the world's number one
best selling artist. Perhaps you might know him as "the
olive guy" who paints the whimsical olives dancing
in and around martini glasses.
Well,
I visited him in his home in Las Vegas and we discussed
creativity and the similarities of illustrative art and
performing art. Although he is not a magician, he is a magician
with a paint brush. And his story of "rags to riches"
is inspiring, too, as he encourages everyone to follow their
dreams. I know you will enjoy this inspirational episode
as we slide into Christmas.
You
can view a video I filmed inside his home, see some candid
photos, read the blog, listen online to the podcast and
download the MP3 at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/535-godard
And be sure to subscribe to our weekly pod-letter to keep
up to date with who is on from week to week plus suggestions
from the Archives on podcasts that deserve another listen.

5. FISM North American Championship Of Magic
-------------------------------------------
Message by Joan Caesar (Canada)
The
FISM North American Championship of Magic along with The
Canadian Association of Magicians convention will be held
May 6-10, 2020 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada
A registration to this historic convention would make a
great Christmas present for the magician in your family.
And your family might want to join you.
Quebec
City is the only walled city in North America and has a
tremendous amount of history. It is as close to the feeling
of Europe as you'll find in North America. There are also
wonderful shops and restaurants to explore along their cobblestone
streets.
Judges
will choose the contestants (a maximum of 15) who will move
up to compete at FISM 2021 as well as the Canadian Champion.
All contestants for a FISM placement must be citizens of
North America. All videos must be sent by Feb 15 in order
to compete. To be eligible to compete for the Canadian prizes
in stage and close up, you must be a member of the Canadian
Association of Magicians.
For
more information and to register, go to www.FISMNA2020.com

6. Do Do Do As I Do - John Carey #65
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
http://www.johncareymagic.co.uk/
I
will admit that I absolutely love the classic Do As I Do
plot. It's such a strong and engaging premise and effect
that also makes your spectator the star in the bargain.
The piece I will discuss here is self working in method,
but the impact is very satisfying. You will require a red
deck and a blue deck. The top two cards of the red deck
are the Ace of Clubs, followed by the Four of Hearts. The
bottom card of this deck is the Seven of Spades. Set these
same three cards in that exact same order in the blue deck
and case both decks ready for action.
Bring
both boxes out and table them as you introduce the effect
by discussing coincidence, synchronicity and fate. Offer
a spectator the free choice of either deck. Let's say they
choose red. Both of you remove your decks and hold them
face down. The boxes are discarded. "Let's work
together as a team Mick and see if any mysterious forces(!)
are at work tonight.
First
off let's each give the cards a true triple cut to randomize
everything. Walk and talk your helper through the classic
Jay Ose tabled false cut and then each of you stack the
three packets up and square up. "Let's each put the
card we cut to in our pockets sight unseen." Take off
the top card of your deck and pocket it. Have your spectator
do the same. Credit to Ben Earl for this self force which
I first saw on his website some years ago.
"Let's
continue and each cut off a small packet together."
Cut off a small packet with your right hand and transfer
it to left-hand dealing grip. Ask the spectator to once
again mirror your actions and cut off a small packet. "I
will count mine to the table." Deal and count your
packet one card at a time into a face down packet. Then
have the spectator do the same with their packet. If you
both have the same, make the most of it! Of course this
is the old count force and sets the Four of Hearts to the
bottom of each packet ready for later disclosure.
"Finally
Mick, would you cut off a fair size packet and then place
the other cards on top like this?" By way of demonstration,
reach over your deck and cut off about half and table them.
Then pick up the remainder and place it on top, offset at
an angle for the classic cross-cut force of Max Holden.
Your helper copies your actions one last time with their
cards. The ingredients are complete and it's just a case
of revealing the matches. Shift the focus a few seconds
as you compliment the spectator on working so well with
you. Then lift off the upper angled section from your packet
with the right hand, held from above. Your spectator copies
you with their
cards. Both of you then turn your packets face-up to reveal
a perfect match of two Sevens of Spades. "Maybe that's
simply a coincidence."
Each
of you set your packets down face-up to the table and then
you draw attention to the two smaller packets each of you
freely cut earlier. Both packets are turned over to reveal
an uncanny match of Four of Hearts. "That's beyond
mere coincidence." To complete the mystery, ask your
helper to take out the card they put in their pocket at
the start. You take out yours too and both are turned face-up
to reveal each of you cut to the Ace of Clubs. "Now
that's synchronicity!"
Notes:
The Jay Ose False Cut was first published in Harry Lorayne's
Close Up Card Magic. A fun idea is to do this with one real
deck and one imaginary deck...

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Memories
Continued - Friends, Past and Present
Peter
Taylor worked with Newbs (Peter Newberry) for 2/3 years.
He and Sally Phillips got engaged, and all was well. Then
Peter decided to go solo once again, with his own act, 'Delmere',
and left the Demonos/Movados. Peter Newberry took on a girl,
(Gaye) who worked with him for about 3 months.
Peter
Taylor decided that Australia was the place to be - but
Sally didn't want to go. Peter practically begged me to
go with him, but, as with Sally, I didn't want to leave
New Zealand. I loved travelling, but NZ was my birthplace,
and very much my home. I can still recall, vividly, going
with Peter to his bank, where he withdrew a large bundle
of cash, still pleading with me to go to 'Aussie' with him.
He even offered to pay my airfare. I stayed. I must have
been bloody mad! (It wasn't until Veronica and I emigrated
to Australia in 1976, that I realised that I should have
gone with Peter, 10 years earlier.) Sally broke off the
engagement, and Peter left New Zealand's shores, forever.
Peter
was right! Sydney, Australia was in the early sixties, regarded
by entertainers as being second only to Las Vegas. It was
a Mecca for hundreds of artists, from acrobats to xylophonists,
(and dozens of '£10 Pommie' comics), who could work
their art(s), and make a very good living as full time professional
entertainers.
It
was said you could 'play' a different club every night of
the week (if you wanted to), for 10 years, without going
to the same one twice. May be a slight exaggeration, but
not far off it. Making small fortunes were the hundreds
of 'Mr 10%' theatrical agents. Each one would handle a
group of clubs, supplying all the entertainment with the
acts on his books. Each agent would swap his acts with those
of other agents, which meant that you always worked. If
you were a good act, with a great agent (should that not
be the other way round?) you, as an artist, were
practically set for life.
For
those who don't know what a '£10 Pommie' is - back
in the '50s, Australia was encouraging professional and
skilled people to emigrate to Australia, and were offering
the British passage by ship, to Australia for only £10.
'Pommie' is slang 'down under' for an English person.
There
were so many different clubs - most lavishly decored, many,
with full-size gymnasiums, restaurants, full size swimming
pools, auditoriums with full stage, sound, lighting, and
dressing room facilities - all from the proceeds of hundreds
of wall to wall, aisle after aisle, Poker machines - which
also paid for the entertainment - bands, dancers, singers,
sight-acts, and big international 'names'. Some clubs even
had special parking facilities - 'for Artists only' - oh,
the luxury. The 'Pokies' were/are gold mines - they paid
- or rather, the punters did - for everything.
Back
to New Zealand - One night, Gaye (Peter Newberry's new assistant)
couldn't work, so Sally stepped in, to help out. They did
three shows that night, and 10 years later, Sally was still
working with Newbs. When Sally finally left the act, Marie
(Peter Newberry's daughter) took over. During all this time,
the act was known as 'Peter and Gaye'. For a brief time,
Kim Hegan (the son of Elaine and the late Eddie Hegan, well
known Auckland Theatrical agents, at the time) also worked
with Newbs.
In
Australia, Peter (Taylor) met and married Rosa. They worked
together as 'Delmere and Rosa' for years, spending 6 months
doing the Sydney clubs, and the other six, touring Europe-
sending all their money back to Australia, building up a
nice nest-egg.
When
Veronica and I finally got to 'Aussie', we met up with Peter
and Rosa - they had bought a house at Menai - a suburb south
of Sydney, and were doing very well. They then moved up
to Southport on the Gold Coast, and bought a lovely home
there. Veronica and I visited them a couple of times when
we were in Queensland doing shows - and then just lost touch,
sometime in the 80's - as you do. That was the last time
I saw Peter.
He
was a very strong, fit man, who never smoked, and I was
shocked to learn from Sally last year, that Peter had died
of Cancer, on the 5th August 1997. Isn't it strange how,
even though you haven't seen or heard from a good friend
for a lot of years, there is still a 'hollow' in your life
when you get the news that they have left this world!
What
I remember most about Peter is, when asked 'how's it going?'
he would cock his head cheekily, just so, and with a huge
grin, a 'million' white teeth flashing, say, 'it's better
than working for a living!' I miss you, old mate!
I
am greatly indebted to Sally for most of the foregoing (nothing
like getting it straight from the horse's mouth, as it were).
Thank you, my very dear friend. I'm sure that I'll be delving
into your encyclopaedic memory again - and again - and again
...........
I
need cheering up - how about you? Here are two impossible
scenarios. Two Magicians meet up - one says to the other
"Let me show you the latest, mind-boggling, utterly
fantastic, blow your audience away, magical stunner".
"NO!!!"
Or;
having shown a mind-boggling etc. stunner, the other magi
says "Wow! I hope you NEVER tell me how that was done!"
---------Bollocks!!
I've
just received a nice e-mail from Jon Zealando. Among other
things, Jon states, Quote; 'Keep it up, Tom, it (the Saga)
brings back some great memories of people also precious
to me...' Unquote. Thank you Jon - I'm pleased that I'm
stirring up memories for many of us New Zealand
show-biz old timers - and letting the younger generation
in New Zealand - and the rest of the world, know of how
it was for us, then, 'down under' in Kiwi-land.
Coming
up - Al Horobin & Fiji.
