Magician Criss Angel reveals 5-year-old son's cancer has returned: 'He had a relapse'

Magician Criss Angel's son Johnny Crisstopher's cancer has returned, the illusionist revealed Tuesday.

In an interview with TMZ, Angel said that Johnny, 5, will be going back to the hospital for treatment following a brief remission. He was first diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2015.

"Johnny Crisstopher -- he got diagnosed with pediatric cancer before he was 2-years-old -- he's been in treatment for over three years, he's been in remission," Angel, 51, told the outlet. "But unfortunately ... he had a relapse and he's going back into the hospital on Monday."

4. The Magic Word Podcast - James Dimmare
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Last week we visited with Celebrity Magician, Murray Sawchuck, who resides in Las Vegas and has an afternoon show at the Tropicana. This week, we go back to Las Vegas to chat with another entertainer who has his own Vegas show, too. James Dimmare, arguably one of the top dove workers in the world today chats with us over martinis and cigars at Frankie's Tiki Room in Las Vegas.

Dimmare recently MOVED his show from the Thunderbird to The Mint, so keep that in mind as you listen because this was recorded well before he made the transition. In this episode, he talks about care and handling of doves, but along the way we talk about getting a showroom in Las Vegas, working in his early years with "the Mob" in Canada, music, developing an act, and so many topics that it was hard to keep focus. But this is a great podcast with some good stories and fun atmosphere. I wish I could do all of my podcasts from there.

You can watch a few videos of Dimmare, read the blog, see some candid photos, listen online and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/534-dimmare And be sure to use the Amazon Affiliate link on the website this holiday shopping season to help The Magic Word Podcast.

Richmond magician John Kaplan is used to making this disappear, but there's one item that's sure to make a regular appearance on his fireplace.

Richmond magician John Kaplan is used to making this disappear, but there's one item that's sure to make a regular appearance on his fireplace.
Kaplan was the proud first recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award at the "It Factor Live" conference in West Palm Beach, Florida recently.
Kaplan said he thinks the market for live, magician-style entertainers is still strong, despite the age of technology and instant gratification.
"Magic continues to be popular; you can see from the talent shows on TV and the likes of Penn and Teller," added Kaplan, who is still doing magic camps in the spring and summer, but is now focusing more on teaching magic.
Kaplan is also the author of "Selling The Impossible" and has been providing marketing information and licensed programs to entertainers for approximately 20 years.
His specific area of expertise is in creating, developing, promoting and providing live magic and illusion shows as fundraising events for schools and community organizations since 1980.

7. The Fine Art Of Magic" By George Kaplan
--------------------------------------------
Message by Chris Wasshuber wasshuber@lybrary.com (US)

"The Fine Art of Magic" by George Kaplan reprinted in an expanded edition:

Starting with the notes, error corrections, and additions from George Kaplan's personal notes, Warren J. Kaps updated and expanded the classic "The Fine Art of Magic". The original illustrations by Frances Rigney have been preserved, and the additional illustrations for new content have been created by Tony Dunn. Both digital and print editions are
available:
https://www.lybrary.com/the-fine-art-of-magic-2nd-edition-p-923399.html

Some have argued that George Kaplan's "Fine Art of Magic" is the best magic book ever published. Juan Tamariz, who wrote a foreword to this second edition, says: "Hardly a performance where I do not include an effect from this book. It's the only book that contains only good and excellent tricks."

Tamariz obviously learned several important lessons from George Kaplan's book. For example, several times Kaplan analyses a trick from the spectator's point of view, what explanations he may come up with for a particular effect, and how to counter those possible explanations with proper performance and/or method. That is classic Tamariz. Well, we should actually say classic Kaplan.

Do yourself a favor, make yourself a Christmas present, and read this book. You will find a long list of absolutely great effects, explained in detail not only what you do, but how you should do it. This book deserves to be at the very least in the top 10 magic books ever published. There are good arguments that would even allow one to say that this is the very best magic book ever published.

Collector's Item

An envelope is brought out and tabled. A card is selected and signed and returned to the deck. "In addition to doing card tricks, I actually like to collect cards. Inside this envelope are some of my favorites." The envelope is opened and a packet is removed. Different coloured designs are shown and dealt one at a time to the table. "But this last card, a yellow card, is my favorite. Do you know why? Because it tells me how you sign your name!" The last card is turned over and revealed to be the signed selection! You require six or seven different designs of cards and colours.

This is very easy in this age of custom decks being very popular. Pop that packet face- down inside a pay envelope and seal it. Let's say you are working with a red deck. Place a yellow back Three of Hearts on the bottom. Bring out the deck and casually spread it face down without exposing your stranger card. Square up and then swing-cut half the deck into your left hand and replace the remaining cards on top, keeping a left pinky-break beneath the stranger card. Take out the envelope from your pocket and table it. Execute a dribble force on your spectator and raise the face of the right hand packet towards them. Have them pick up a sharpie marker and
reach over and sign the card. Replace the right-hand section on top of the left's, but secure a pinky break beneath their card. Pause a beat and then casually double undercut the signed stranger card to the bottom of the deck.

Talk about how you like to collect playing cards. Ask your helper to pick up the envelope and open it and table the contents. As they do this, gamblers cop the signed card into your left hand and casually table the deck aside. The right hand picks up the packet from above and secretly adds the copped card to the bottom of the packet as you make a squaring action. From a method point of view, your work is done. Deal off the coloured cards face-down one at a time to the table as you comment on each colour, design and other features, until just one yellow card remains. Pause and then slowly turn it over to reveal that inexplicably it is their signed card!

9. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings

Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

Memories - Friends and Acquaintances - past and present

Although I knew much of what follows, - the details come from my dear friend, and buddy of, 35 years, Sally Metzger (nee Phillips), who now lives with her husband Derek (well-known New Zealand singer), in Sydney, Australia (which was also our 'home town', for 10 years). More of Sally and Derek, later.

When I first met Peter Taylor December 31st, 1964, there was another Peter whom I knew - Peter Newberry. He, with his partner, David Baylis had been on the entertainment scene for around 8 years, performing since about 1957. They had two different acts - the first, as 'The Demonos', was a trick-cyclist act, which featured the 'smallest bike in the world'; the other was, 'The Movados, The Laziest Acrobats in the World' - with their faces painted flat white, and holding dead-pan expressions it was hilarious. Every lift, pose, and movement, was performed in extreme slow motion. The amount of strength and control necessary was enormous!

David Baylis started working with Peter, when he was only 13. According to Peter Newberry's wife, Pat, they had to get special permission for David to work, because of his age, especially when they were booked into the world famous Chequer's Night Club which was situated in the equally (in) famous King's Cross, of Sydney Australia. When they arrived there, they discovered that two 'spots' were required - they only had one, which was the trick-cycling and acrobatics, combined, so they split the two, created the idea of using white faces, etc., and from an advertising sign they spotted for watches, the stage name 'Movados' was born.

Sometime during the early part of 1965, the two Peters met up - probably at some show they were both booked for. It was a happy coincidence, as David has wanted to leave the act for some time (he and Peter Newberry had at that time been together for 8 years), to buy a restaurant, and to pursue his own career as a Cordon Bleu chef. Peter Taylor fitted the 'Demonos/Movados' acts perfectly, being an acrobat in his own right and juggler. David and Peter Newberry (nicknamed 'Newbs') taught the act to Peter Taylor, and everyone was happy - David bought his restaurant,
Newbs had his new partner in Peter Taylor, who was elated as he could still work in his own act as 'Delmere', and potentially double his income. With the volume of work he/they were getting (and myself, for that matter), our 'bird watching' on Friday nights, gradually became a thing of the past.

The next time I worked with the now two Peters, was in Fiji, touring with Alan Horobin and his chimps, for two months - from the 6th October to the 10th December 1965. We had to leave by then, as the two Peters and myself had Christmas Company bookings to fulfil in Auckland,
starting Saturday the 11th December. According to my Diary, I did 8 shows that day - the first started at 10.15am, the last finished 11pm that night - no rest for the wicked! I'll come back later to Fiji and Al Horobin.

Christmas and New Year's Eve 1965 - show at the Rotorua Sound Shell, with myself, performing the Magic, Mime and Yoga acts, the two Peters doing the Demonos and Movados routines - the Compere was Lew Pryme - another well known New Zealander - singer, T.V. personality, and Rugby-Sports writer. After the show, Lew introduced us to his friend, Sally Phillips, who was on holiday with her friend Jenny Harwood - that was the first time Sally had met any of us - apart from Lew Pryme.

Talking to Sally on the phone the other day, as I often do, (England to Australia - to hell with the expense), probing her seemingly inexhaustible memory and confirming details. She says 'you remember Jenny, don't you?' 'No!' 'Well, you should' says Sally 'you and she ...........' 'I didn't' 'You did,' says Sally 'You randy bugger!' 'Hey, Sally, my love - it takes two!!' Perhaps, Mary Throll (retired Auckland Agent) was right - I was a 'little terror' with the ladies, in those days.

Continues next week - also, Fiji and Alan Horobin.
