Crossbow stunt gone wrong leaves magician with head wound

An illusionist in South Africa suffered a head wound when a magic show stunt involving a crossbow went terribly wrong.
Reports say Li Lau was performing an escape when he was shot Sunday in Makhanda. He left the hospital after doctors stitched up his head.

"We just had a little minor incident this afternoon, but I'm all well," Lau said in a video statement on Twitter that he posted afterward, according to Epoch Times.

The crossbow bolt did not penetrate Lau's skull, News 24 reported.

The station and other South African news outlets reported that another performer, Brendon Peel, shot Lau.

The National Arts Festival, which staged the show, said those reports were wrong.
"The escape is performed while the crossbow is held by apparatus & fired by a mechanically-timed trigger," the festival said. "At the time the crossbow was fired, it was not held by either performer."

Those who saw what happened included a number of children.

"We send our apologies to the kids for giving a few of them quite a scare," Peel said on Facebook.

The show will go on, the festival vowed.

Message by Paul Romhany - Editor Vanish Magazine

The latest edition of Vanish has a double feature cover story. To celebrate 30 years of Vaudeville 2000 Rudy Coby is 'brining the team' back together for a very special Vaudeville 3000 show at the upcoming IBM convention. Keeping with this theme Randy Wakeman sent us an amazing article on The Great Ballantine. We had access to photos by his daughter Sara and is an incredible insight in to this amazing comedy legend.

Nick Lewin takes a look at control and how to what it means as an entertainer from the moment you walk on stage.

Vanish gets invited to the New York Yankees hope day. Ben Robinson shares an amazing day as part of the VANISH invite to honour an incredible magician Olmedini. Truly an inspiration to us all.
Ben also takes us to two different shows, The Illusionists on Broadway and Paul Gartner's one-man show.

FFFF in review with photos by Mike Maione and story by Howard Hamburg

Jeff Christensen continues his series on Magic Is Education with an interview with Rob Zabrecky.

5. David Regal On - The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

On our 499th episode of The Magic Word Podcast, we have a wonderful conversation with noted magician, script writer, producer and author, David Regal. David has been working in Hollywood for years as a comedy scriptwriter and over the past several years he has been a producer of one of television's hottest shows, "The Carbonaro Effect" with Michael Carbonaro. In our chat, David talks about the show and why he thinks it is working. Basically it's because they are not trying to do magic tricks on unsuspecting people. The difficult part is for the tricks not to look like tricks. He discusses his philosophy of magic from his book, "Approaching Magic" and ideas from his upcoming book.

You can watch a few videos of David in action, read the blog, see some candid photos, listen to the podcast online, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/499-david-regal Next week we travel to Scottsdale, Arizona were we will post daily updates from the convention. But first, the next episode, the significant 500th episode will be with none other than the celebrated but always controversial Israeli phenomenon, Uri Geller. Be sure to subscribe to The Magic Word Podcast so you don't miss this epic episode.

6. When Thoughts Combine - John Carey #47

Message by John Carey (UK)

The following is a card at a number effect. It is NOT the Holy Grail that some people seem obsessed with. It is however a very practical piece designed for anytime and anywhere and impromptu. Using two age-old concepts, it hits the spot with civilians.

From a shuffled deck in use have a card selected via the riffle peek method. Ask spectator one to say stop as you riffle the outer corner of the deck with your right index finger. Get them to lock the thought of that card into their mind. Allow that card to drop off the index finger and then secure a left little-finger break above it as you square up.

A few moments later cut half the cards above your break to the table. Then cut to the break and drop them on top of the tabled packet. Finish by dropping the remaining cards on top of all and square up. The selection, say 5 of Spades is of course now on top. Execute an in the hands riffle shuffle retaining it on top. As you square up execute an all around square up glimpse of the face card of the deck. Let's say it's the King of Clubs. This will act as our key card.

Table the deck in front of a second person. "Sir, I would like you to think of a number. Now psychologically there are certain numbers that lots of people seem to go for. So, it's completely random and fair, we will let the deck generate a number. I will look away. Please cut off a packet, not too small but not too big. Then deal and count the cards quietly into a packet on the table. Lock that random number into your mind and place that packet back on top of the deck and cut the deck and complete the cut. Tell me when you are done and I will turn around and face you."

During the above interaction we will be applying the age old, but still beautifully effective, double count force to position the first persons thought of card at the second person's random number. They cut off a packet and silently deal and count into a tabled pile to form a number. Let's say it's twelve. Because the first card dealt is the selection, when they replace the packet on top of the deck the selection has been covertly set to this random number. The deck is cut and the cut completed. This puts our key card, the King of Clubs, 12 cards away from the selection.

Pick up the deck and execute a false shuffle as you state that one person is thinking of a card and the other a number. Flip the deck face-up. Start spreading the cards with the faces of the cards tilted towards you slightly. Mention that if this was the traditional 'card trick' you would go through the deck and try to find their card. But seeing as you don't know what card or indeed number is being thought of, this experiment will be totally out of your control and entirely up to your spectators to conclude. As you say this you secure a little-finger break above your key card. Execute a turnover pass as you turn the deck face-down and table it.

Ask the second spectator to call out the number they are thinking of. Then ask the first spectator to call out their card. Have that person deal down to the number and stop them one card shy of that number. Pause to build some suspense and then have the next card turned over to successfully conclude the mystery.

This effect was inspired by my friend Patrick Redford's effect Applesauce from his book of the same name. The deck generating a random number line belongs to him. I wanted a handling better suited to my style and with only one key card.

-------------------------------------
The Orchante Saga - Beginnings

Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

At Last! The Wairoa College Incident!

Several fads started up at College - one was the 'staring without blinking' contest; teachers wondered what the hell was going on, classrooms full of 'zombies' trying to 'outstare' each other - of course it was my fault; everything was - admittedly I started it - part of my hypnotic lessons - nobody beat me! Another 'craze' started by the 'tough boys', to prove they could 'take pain' like Tommy Orchard, was to apparently smash at full force, their knuckles on the top edge of tables; the resounding 'SMACK' made everyone not 'in the know' cringe; they should have been crippled - for life! The secret - just before your knuckles hit the table, you open your hand; it is your palm and fingers which hit the table thus creating the awful 'CRACK!'; as your arm swings on down, you quickly close your fingers. The illusion is perfect - try it sometime - it doesn't hurt! My answer to the 'toughies' - actually DO IT! But in the centre of the table; looking back, I must have been bloody mad - even though I'd 'kill' the pain, I could still have done some permanent damage. Very lucky! Very stupid!!

The other fad, which I DIDN'T start (honest) - was, to get someone to squat down, take 10 deep breaths --on the tenth one, they had to hold their breath and stand straight up. You, standing behind them, place your arms around their middle and squeeze tightly. Within 30 seconds they will go limp and totally unconscious. You lower them gently to the ground, and they will lie there twitching like mad for a few seconds, then slowly come around. I can only describe the sensation as going 'under anesthetic' - your brain whirls like a pin-wheel - then nothing.
The next minute you come around and find yourself lying on the ground. Everyone was at it, taking turns to knock each other out. These fads all started in response to my hypnotic antics.

Then the 'proverbial' starts hitting the fan. I've got some excellent hypnotic subjects, and I'm now into post-hypnotic suggestions - that is, giving your hypnotised subject a suggestion to carry out a particular action, at a signal from you, sometime after they have woken up - and they have no conscious memory of having received any instructions from you.. I've also acquired a brand new, hot off the press, book 'The Eyes Have It' by my hero "Franquin", an Auto-biography published 1957. (If you haven't read it, try and get it from a Library.

I promise, you won't be disappointed.) In it, he describes how, as a schoolboy at Wellington College, he got 'Stuffy' Logan to throw his ink-well at the black-board. Methinks "I can do that!" I don't remember who my hapless, subject was, but we did have ink bottles so........., at my signal, he stood up, bottle in hand, and fired it straight at the blackboard! It took off across the classroom like a rocket, heading for outer space. "BANG!!" An eternity of shocked silence - then, everybody, every eye, every finger, was pointing in my direction. When the 'bizarre' happened, you could bet that Tommy Orchard was behind it, somehow!

I'm marched off to the Headmaster's office, a call was put through to my father in Raupunga!!!! For several weeks I'm a model pupil - but I've now been 'bitten' three times - the magic, fakir, and now hypnotism bugs. My very soul has been infected for life!! I'm an ENTERTAINER!! One day after school it happens! Somehow, an impromptu demonstration of hypnotism starts - just outside the school gates, on the footpath. My audience swells, spills out onto the road - now, the traffic has stopped. Tommy 'The Great' is 'buried' in the middle of a huge 'bull-ring' blissfully unaware of what's happening outside. Then the headmaster, the teachers are all there "What's causing all the commotion?" "OH, NO - IT'S THAT TOMMY ORCHARD AGAIN!!!!!"

I'm marched yet again to the Headmaster's office, again Dad is called - this time IT'S SERIOUS! EXPULSION hangs in the air. It's "Toe the line, young man - or else!!" The incident hits 'The Wairoa Star' the local newspaper, and my name is in print - for the very first time. Don't remember much after that - do know I earned me one hell of a reputation and, one hell of a sore arse from my father.. The girls were wary of me - the result of schoolboy imaginings, and 'lurid talk' of things you could 'make a girl do' while under your 'power', obeying your every wish and whim! Thankfully, I did have some moral values in my youth.

Many years later in Sydney, Australia, I was going through some very old 'Abras' from the library of the I.B.M. Maurice Rooklyn Ring 102, and came across a report in one, (can't remember what year or month but around 1957-58) about the Wairoa incident, and pooh-poohing the whole thing - "whoever heard of a 12 - 13 year old kid being able to hypnotise. What a load of rubbish". (or words to that effect). How wrong they were, whoever wrote it up. Wish I'd taken the details then - perhaps someone out there has copies of these old Abras, and would perhaps be kind enough to take the time and search this article out. I personally would be extremely grateful, and I'm sure the exact wording would be of interest to the readers of this e-zine. The fact that it was written up at all means that the information must have come from the 'Wairoa Star'.

ADDENDUM
What I'm about to relate many of you will find difficult to swallow, nonetheless, it's true.

There was one male teacher (today I'm convinced he would be diagnosed as having psychotic tendencies) who delighted in ' thrashing' misbehaving boys, with the cane. He had a particularly nasty technique - he made you bend over, with your head under a table. Consequently, with each 'WHACK' on your backside, your head automatically jerked up and SLAMMED into the
underside of the table. Today, that man would be arrested for assault! There were two pupils he never caned - a Maori boy named Charlie - he was huge, like two Jonah Lomus (famous New Zealand rugby player) rolled into one!, and he towered over everyone - and me. Only once did he try to cane me - as I started to bend over, I thought 'NO!', straightened up, turned around and 'fixed' my eyes right on the bridge of his nose -held his gaze without blinking - and mentally willed him not to move.

(This was Franquin's mesmerism technique in action.) He stood there, flexing his cane, his mouth opening and shutting like a fish out of water, not a sound coming out. Then, my eyes not wavering a fraction from his, I quietly said in an authoritative and positive tone, "you will never, ever, attempt to touch me again". I held his gaze for a few more seconds, mentally enforcing my suggestion, then turned and walked out, and that was that! I know many of you will say ''what a load of bull' - but a psychologist would clearly understand how and why it happened. In simplistic terms, he (the teacher) was in a heightened state of excitement - about to indulge in his malicious caning - then suddenly his 'psyche' was caught unawares by the unexpected, by someone he knew could hypnotise (the whole school knew - I'd already been in trouble because of it), who 'fixed' him with a well practised 'hypnotic stare' and his 'fired up' imagination did the rest - with some help from me - he had NO CHANCE!

If at the time I had been more experienced, I would have known that he was 'ripe' for instantaneous hypnosis - more's the pity - my moral values would have gone right out the window where that sadistic bastard was concerned!!!

Today most people know that hypnotism is a science (and an art), but in the fifties, hypnotism was thought by many as the 'evil eye', diabolical, a supernatural power - that some sort of 'electricity' flowed from the hypnotist's eyes. When one has the notorious reputation of being able to put people to 'sleep', it was the 'eyes' that did it and rumours are rife about one's 'powers' ! - I've said this before, but it's important -you must have total, absolute confidence - you know you can hypnotise - influence, it is this assurance that reaches out and has its effect on your subjects - they WILL react as you wish, but you MUST believe. Remember, imagination is the most powerful force in the world - POSITIVE THOUGHT gives POSITIVE RESULTS!!
