4. MagiCuba Documentary
------------------------------------
Message by John Rose
At
long last, the MagiCuba Documentary has been released.
Genres:
Documentary, Short Films
Duration: 15 minutes
Subtitles: English, Spanish
Availability: Worldwide
MagiCuba
was a historic gathering of dozens of the world's greatest
magicians who were permitted by the Cuban Ministry of Culture
to perform for five days at the first International Festival
and Conference of Magic in Havana.
After
years of negotiations and planning, MagiCuba took place
in November 2018 despite a moribund Cuban infrastructure,
lethargic bureaucracy and a longstanding U.S. Embargo that
has restricted Americans from traveling to the island for
decades. "Perhaps the greatest trick we performed was
making MagiCuba a reality" observed its creator, John
Rose.
Never
before, and perhaps never again, will this much magical
talent appear together on this island nation trapped in
a perpetual time warp since Fidel Castro's revolutionary
army rolled into La Habana. Meet the Cuban magicians that
never have imagined themselves performing alongside their
wizardly heroes. In a heartwarming collaboration, watch
as Las Vegas headliners mix with provincial Cuban "magos"
to perform in Cuba's National Theater, famous nightclubs,
iconic hotels, the Cuban Circus and in the streets of Old
Havana to amaze and delight the Cuban masses - most of whom
had never before seen a live magic show.
All
of this took place against the colorful, rhythmic backdrop
of one of the most magical cities on earth. The film was
directed by Cuban filmmaker, Fabiana Salgado, produced by
John Rose and features interviews with magic stars Joel
Acevedo, John Archer, Jorge Blass, Mike Caveney, Edgar Cervera,
Michael Goudeau, Norbert Ferre, Bill Herz, Jade, Mac King,
Chris Korn, Chad Long, Tina Lenert, Wilfredo Mena, Roger
Ruiz, Jon Stetson, Asi Wind and many more.

5. Preview Of M-U-M's July Issue
------------------------------------
Message by Lindsay Smith (US)
As you'll see on this month's cover, the SAM has minted
a new president, thanks to Bruce Kalver who designed the
cover and wrote the feature article titled "Steve Spence:
The Ultimate Magic Enthusiast." Thanks also to Steve
himself who worked hard to climb the ladder to become the
national president of the world's oldest magic organization.
Follow Bruce's trail through the words as Steve makes his
second-grade discovery of magic at a circus sideshow. From
there you'll learn about his travels, education, overseas
experience, family, and the rekindling of his interest in
the art by his oldest son Dustin. There's more, including
Dustin's involvement with SYM, and Steve's joining SAM.
It's a great introduction to your new president.
Steve Spence shares his go-to routine with us, titled "The
Mischievous Kennedy Brothers: A Script for Matrix with Two
Cards." Steve feels that most Matrix-type routines,
which he loves, fail to have a reason for the action. Using
Michael Rubinstein's handling of what he calls the Two Card
Reverse Matrix, Steve's clever script about the Kennedy
brothers brings meaning to the action.
Yasuo Kiga offers two routines in "Routines and Moves
from Yasuo Kiga" this month. The first is a Reverse
Calculator Prediction, with significant differences from
the classic Calendar Trick, ending with an entertaining
surprise. He also presents a Flying Eagles routine, coins
to glass, which is well explained and well-illustrated.
When you read the first "From the President's Desk"
column from Steve Spence, you'll be proud to be a member
of "the oldest and most prestigious magical organization
in the world." Steve explains how that happens and
why that works by looking back into our history and forward
to the future. There are definite reasons, and Steve shares
his thoughts on those.
"Salute to Magic 2019" was the 110th show of SAM
Parent Assembly #1, making it the oldest and longest continuing
magic show within the United States. It took place on March
30 this year, with Lucy Darling, a.k.a. Carisa Hendrix,
as the magical mistress of ceremonies. Writer Steve Okulewicz
takes us through the performances of these first-rate entertainers
and highlights of their (in some cases) award-winning acts.
As it turns out, our Dean spent his formative (?) youthful
years as many of us did . . . among dribble glasses, snake
nut cans, Joy Buzzers and other S.S. Adams products, and
Johnson-Smith catalogs. In this month's "The Dean's
Diary," George Schindler returns us to an easier, fun-filled
time. Take this nostalgic trip with our Dean. But beware
if he offers you a stick of gum.
Al Callus crossed off the final item on his bucket list:
to become a stand-up comedian by his 85th birthday. For
some, just reaching age 85 might be a final bucket list
item. But in Al's "Guest Editorial," he explains
why there's much more, adding that the rewards of doing
comedy are fantastic and he's having fun. At age 85, his
journey continues. That's not funny; that's great.
In their "TV or Not TV" column, Cinde and Dal
Sanders answer the question: When is a good time to go on
TV? As you'll learn, there are several answers depending
on major local or national events, time of day, and "slow
news days." There's timely information here.
"On Second Thought
" columnist Paul Draper
talks about customization in performances. He notes that
a joke or effect customized specifically for the audience
you are performing for . . . will be more powerful than
the stock material that you can use everywhere. He explains
an old $4 trick called Mind Control that he brings up-to-date
in a format that you can use, and probably will.
One of David Corsaro's good friends in magic is Robert Davis
who -- no surprise here -- is quite big in the marketing
world. In David's "No Smoke, No Mirrors" column,
they discuss Robert's bestselling work "Your Magic
Brand." You'll learn about Robert's cool name for mistakes
that new products make: "Frankenbrands," and it's
a trap that magicians can fall into as well.
In Brian Lees' column, "Taking the Stage," he
writes that entertainment is all about that special connection
with the audience. He also reminds us to never forget this:
If the audience cannot hear, see, or follow along, it makes
no difference how good you are - you will not score well
as an entertainer. You'll learn all about these missteps
and how to avoid them.
This month, Kien Meng Wee's column, "Magic in a Bottle,"
brings you bubbles in a bottle. Seriously? Yep. Exploding
Bubbles is the contribution of Jay Huang, a magician from
Taiwan who offers a quickie effect. The props are simple
as a soap bubble: a glove, a small crystal ball, some confetti,
and a bottle of bubble solution. And a thought to remember:
young children love bubbles.
Think twice . . . okay, maybe more than that . . . if you're
thinking of adding a live tiger or other large feline to
your illusion show. Sure, Abbott's will build the illusion
you want, or you can inquire about the custom-built Lion's
Bride illusion from Owen Magic Supreme. Before you make
that investment, I recommend reading David Seebach's "Illusions
of Grandeur" column. He has lots of experience in this
area (mostly good) and offers good advice as well as cautions.
It's more like Illusions of Grandeur with Teeth!
It was a busy month for our seven reviewers who evaluated
numerous books (two), tricks (nine), DVDs (two), and download
(one) in "ShopTalk." Their efforts, of course,
are all to help you determine if this particular item will
be helpful to you or not - before you invest.
M-U-M's "Tech Tricks" columnist and SAM's all-purpose
tech wizard Bruce Kalver suggests four diverse items for
your consideration, including a Wireless Voice Amplifier
Microphone with Speaker Amplifier; a playing card T-shirt
collection; a 3D Holographic Air Fan Display; and a beautiful
Jim Shore-created and magically themed Charlie Brown statuette.
Any or all are worth your consideration.
David Goodsell continues his "The SAM History Project"
column with an article about W.D. LeRoy, a popular and successful
Boston magic dealer. When the SAM was organized, LeRoy became
member number 33. In the last paragraph of his column, David
poses several questions for readers about Mr. LeRoy. If
you can shed light on this historic figure, David would
appreciate hearing from you.
Norman Beck writes about bluffing, telling lies, not telling
the truth, and those who admit that they just don't know,
in his always thought-provoking "Thoughts on Thinking"
column. He notes that magicians, and people in general,
like to bluff. Learn the differences here.
Throughout M-U-M you'll find all your other go-to favorites,
including Editor Alan Howard's "Preshow" column,
"Assembly Reports," and more SAM news and member
information, and "Broken Wands." Check "Diversions"
for PNP Dick Bowman's "Magic IQ," "Magic
WORDoodles," "Number Grids," and our favorite
magical cartoon characters by Alan Wassilak, "Basil
the Baffling and Chloe." Our valued advertisers always
appreciate knowing that you saw their ad in M-U-M.

David
Hussey, 53, of Weymouth, is facing four counts of indecent
assault and battery on a person under 14

A
Massachusetts magician has been indicted on charges he allegedly
indecently assaulted two juveniles who attended his magic
classes, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney's
office.
A
grand jury returned indictments Wednesday against David
Hussey, 53, of Weymouth. He was charged with four counts
of indecent assault and battery on a child under the age
of 14.
The
longtime magician, who uses the stage name "David Oliver",
was arrested on Jan. 23 following a four-month investigation
by state police detectives assigned to the district attorney's
office.
He
had been arraigned and charged on two counts of indecent
assault and battery and one count of indecent assault and
battery under the age of 14 and was out on bail.
The
alleged male victims told authorities Hussey indecently
assaulted them in the early 2000s when they attended magic
classes at his former home in Rockland.
According to the alleged victims' interviews, they were
given private lessons at Hussey's home and they assisted
him as stagehands in his show while he was a member of the
Society of Young Magicians.
Hussey
is also accused of inappropriately touching the boys in
hotel rooms while on the road. Prosecutors say some of the
alleged victims describe Hussey as having "power over
them".

Magician Indecently Assaulted 3 Juveniles
Hussey is expected to be arraigned on the new charges in
Brockton Superior Court at a later date.

7. Pat Hazell - Part Two - The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
This
week on The Magic Word Podcast, we finish our conversation
with comedian, magician, writer, producer and performer,
Pat Hazell. We pick up where we left off last week with
a funny story about a New Year's Eve show he did with Terry
Seabrooke in Lubbock, Texas in the early 1980's. Pat continues
to regale us with many stories from the road, but perhaps
more importantly he shares important advice for magicians
and comedians.
You
can watch videos of Pat, read the blog, see some never-before
seen photos, listen to the podcast online and download the
MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/498-pat-hazell-part-two
And of course, you can always catch the podcast through
your favorite device using any method you use to download
other podcasts. Next week will lead us closer to our milestone
500th episode with a guest that we have been wanting to
have on the podcast for some time. If you are curious as
to who will be on the 499th episode, then be sure to subscribe

8. Two Card Transpo - John Carey #47
-------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main
Here's
a very minimalistic approach to the classic two card transposition,
in that it only uses just two cards. In Carneycopia, John
Carney has a version called Trans-essence, which is beautiful,
but beyond my skill set.
For
my version remove the Ace of Spades and the Jack of Diamonds
and discard the deck. You want two visually contrasting
cards for clarity. Call attention to the two values and
hand them to a helper for mixing. Take the packet back into
left hand dealer's grip and then take the top card into
the right fingertips and revolve the face of the card outwards
to display say the Ace of Spades. Ask your helper to hold
their left hand out palm down.
When
they do, change your mind and ask them to turn it palm down.
This gives enough shade to essentially do a top change,
switching the Ace for the Jack. Place the switched in card
onto their palm up left hand. Open your left hand up with
what they believe to be the Jack on it.
Cover
your card with your right hand and ask them to do the same.
"I'm going to try to make my Jack vanish. Maybe yours
might vanish too."
Take
your right hand away to show your card still there. Have
them replicate you.
Now
a wonderful presentational Gambit of Larry Jennings: "Jack,
thank you for helping by the way. Here, let me shake your
hand. (extending your right hand and shaking theirs) That's
a common courtesy or social exchange of course. But sometimes,
it can also exchange the power..."
Direct
them to turn their card over to reveal they now have the
Jack and you have the Ace and your work is done.

15. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
Written
by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
Self
Hypnosis, Hypnotism, The Wairoa College Incident 1956-57
Am
now boarding in Wairoa, home for the weekends, and have
acquired two books on Hypnotism (my bibles). The first weekend
home after my acquisitions I'm proudly showing off my Ralph
Slater Hypnotism book (I'd inadvertently left Franquin's
book in Wairoa, thankfully); Mum's horrified! Playing around
with 'silly' magic tricks was one thing, but this 'evil
eye' stuff was something else entirely.
"It's
the work of the devil - black arts - ungodly! (If there'd
been an Exorcist handy, she would have called him) Phew!!
That's what a lot of folks associated hypnotism with in
those days. Mum pulled on a pair of heavy gloves, grabbed
the fire-side tongs, and gingerly holding the 'evil' book
at arm's length, opened the door of the wood-stove and threw
it in; blood ran cold as maniacal laughter issued from the
roaring flames and echoed hollowly around the room. Okay,
okay, I'm exaggerating - but - MUM BURNT MY BOOK - AAARRRGH!
Each
week I was given enough money to buy school lunches etc.
so, when I got back to Wairoa, I bought another copy, and
went hungry - good practice for the future - show business
and 'lean times' go hand in hand. Actors/actresses say "I'm
resting between jobs, lovey" - BULLS.....T, you're
out of work, you snobby twits!!
Rang
New Zealand last week for a chat with Dad, also to glean
any facts he could remember. Among other things, he said
"To put it mildly, son, you did cause some problems
at college!" To hell with homework - I had better things
to do, practising Sleight of Hand, studiously learning the
art of Hypnotism and mastering Self-Hypnosis, which I found
relatively easy to accomplish, because - I BELIEVED! A young
mind will more readily accept 'ideas' than an older one
which is set in its ways, and sceptical. YOUR IMAGINATION
IS THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE WORD, - POSITIVE thinking
gives POSITIVE results - NEGATIVE thinking gives
NEGATIVE results! It's a strange feeling, the first time
you go into a self-induced trance (using your imagination)
and giving yourself suggestions such as;- 'my arm is so
light, it's rising' - and it does, without any physical
effort on your part to lift it!
My
favourite was suggesting that my body was so light it was
floating. The sensation is very real, even though your conscious
mind knows you are still lying on the bed, fascinating stuff,
especially when using Self-hypnosis to control pain! - which
neatly brings me to WAIROA COLLEGE.
'Showing
off' my new found skill in pain control I managed to turn
a few stomachs and make the girls scream, by pushing needles
through my arms and cheeks, (without bleeding), and getting
the girls to pinch me while I deadened the feeling in the
appropriate spot - Woh! The teachers were getting fed-up
with the constant banging of a penny being dropped onto
the desk top - well, I am left handed, so I could still
write and, at the same time, practice palming and flipping
a coin across my right-hand fingers - they must have had
a right 'booze-up' from all my pennies they confiscated
- absolutely no appreciation of my skills - bloody cretins!
Now,
I'm not sure of the year - 1956 - 57 - I'm getting into
some heavy stuff for a kid of 12 or 13 years old - I'm a
bit of a rebel - have a 'mind-set' for all things Magic
and Hypnotism, and to hell with everyone and everything
else! I'm needing 'subjects' to practise Hypnosis techniques
on - word gets around - 'it's all happening, down by the
boys toilet block during lunch hour - that Tommy Orchard
is doing weird things, making people fall over - can't undo
laced fingers', etc; I am, of course, using standard 'stage
tests' to find the 'best subjects' for a performance, techniques
I've learned from my Franquin and Ralph Slater Hypnotism
books - in fact, I'm developing what FRANQUIN called 'MESMERIC
ABILITIES', where subjects are fully conscious, yet by suggestion
or touch alone, are just as influenced as if under complete
hypnosis.
Already
endowed with a strong personality, mastering self-hypnosis
boosted my self confidence - you KNOW you can influence
- CAN hypnotise - this assurance reached out and has an
effect on your subject (s). The next step was sitting 'volunteers'
on the toilet seats, and walking up and down intoning "You
are getting sleepy, sleeeepy" etc,. The surroundings
were, to put it mildly, rather inappropriate and totally
inelegant - it was all I had to surreptitiously practise
the 'Hypnotic arts' but, it was under those awful conditions
that I first successfully induced the 'hypnotic sleep' in
my volunteers. Unfortunately I've run out of the space to
include 'MAJOR INCIDENT' at Wairoa College.
DON'T
MISS NEXT WEEK'S NAIL-BITING, ENTHRALLING EPISODE. I'll
leave you
with one CLIFF-HANGING word --- E X P U L S I O N ---
