2. United States Playing Card Company Is Being Sold
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lee Asher (US)

United States Playing Card Company is being sold to Cartamundi, an esteemed Belgium playing card manufacturer. This is huge!

So what does this mean for the American playing card giant? More important, what does this mean for us magicians, collectors and cardists?

For now, it's too soon to tell. But it's safe to say that we're witnessing playing card history in the making.

What a time to be alive and love playing cards!

3. Cartamundi To Acquire The United States Playing Card Company
------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Lee Asher (US)

Cartamundi

Acquisition to expand portfolio of products offered by Cartamundi to customers.

Turnhout, June 4, 2019 - The Belgian privately-owned group Cartamundi has signed an agreement to buy The United States Playing Card Company (USPC) from its parent company Newell Brands. The acclaimed playing cards maker's focus is on North America and Spain.

Through this acquisition, Cartamundi continues to invest in the global entertainment market.
The United States Playing Card Company, owner of the iconic brands such as Bicycle®, Bee®, Hoyle® and Fournier®, is the global standard within the world of playing cards. The business employs over 350 people and has manufacturing facilities in the U.S. city of Erlanger (Kentucky) and the Spanish city of Vitoria (Álava). In 2018 USPC realized net sales of approximately 112 million US dollars.

"We are excited about the opportunity and look forward to welcoming The United States Playing Card Company to the Cartamundi group. USPC is a globally renowned company and, like us, has a passion for its products and consumers. The segments in which USPC operates are perfectly complementary to those of Cartamundi. This investment will further deliver on Cartamundi's purpose of sharing the magic of playing together towards consumers worldwide."- Stefaan Merckx, CEO of Cartamundi

"We are delighted about the prospect to join forces with Cartamundi and leverage both companies' rich history and passion of card making, as well as our complementary global presence. We look forward to working together in furthering our shared ambition to delight consumers across the globe."-Michael Slaughter, CEO of USPC

Local commitment

Cartamundi wants to expand its geographic reach through new countries and new channels. This proposed acquisition is a logical step forward, as USPC is a strong player in the growing cardistry, casino and specialty playing cards segments. The combined company will employ 2,500 people and operate 13 state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities across four continents. As such, Cartamundi has a strong local commitment. A commitment to its customers, but also to the local economy and the environment.

"Consumers from different regions have different needs. The best way to serve them is to rely on the knowledge and experience of our local teams." - Stefaan Merckx, CEO of Cartamundi
The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2019, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Alta Capital Partners acted as financial advisor and Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP acted as legal advisor to Cartamundi on the transaction.

About Cartamundi

Cartamundi is Latin for "Cards for the World". With a history dating back to 1765, Cartamundi is the world's leading manufacturer of card & board games and digital solutions. With a network of owned sales offices, 11 state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and a workforce of over 2,200 people, Cartamundi is a prominent and growing supplier to the global cards, games and toys industry. In 2018, Cartamundi generated a revenue of approximately $440 million.

Legendary games such as Monopoly® and Pokémon® run off the Cartamundi production lines, as do many different varieties of playing cards and card games for consumers as well as casinos.
With its strong brands such as Color Addict®, Shuffle®, COPAG® and Grimaud®, Cartamundi created a compelling range of playing cards, children's card games and family games which can be found in all major retailers across the globe. All contributing to fulfilling the Cartamundi purpose of "Sharing the Magic of Playing Together".

Cartamundi's corporate headquarters are located in Turnhout, Belgium. Manufacturing facilities are located in Japan, India, Poland, Germany, France, Belgium, United Kingdom, Ireland, United States of America and Brazil.

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

This week on The Magic Word Podcast we welcome Rick Lax, co-creator of the SyFy TV Network "reality" series, "Wizard Wars". Rick talks about the creation of this program and, despite its high ratings, was canceled. Learn why in this episode. Also Rick talks about working with Penguin Magic and creating new magic. But his new project is another video production called "Making Magic" and is featured on Facebook. With millions of viewers, this new series is directed towards the general public and is looks a little like the Netflix series, "Comedians Getting Coffee in Cars, with Jerry Seinfeld", except he features magicians. Also, these videos are tight and run about 12-15 minutes in total length.

You can learn more by visiting the website at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/495-rick-lax This week we also congratulate the winners of last week's contest for the DVD sets offered by Danny Orleans: Charles Morgan and David Kenward. 6. Scott Alexander On The Magic Word Podcast
-------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

This week we talk with Scott Alexander who tells us about the development of MAJOKE, the parody of MAGIC Magazine that he helped produce, MAJOKE is probably the most hilarious, controversial, offensive and downright funny thing to come out in the magic world...ever!

Similar to the "Weenie" parody of Genii Magazine a few years back, but nowhere near as reserved. We also talk about immediate gratification with immediate digital downloads like the new Magicflix, and the difference between males and females doing magic, the book he is writing on the life of Denny Haney, how he landed his job at Caesar's Magical Empire, working with Penguin Magic, how he thinks and creates magic and so much more.

You can learn more by visiting the website at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/496-scott-alexander This week we also start a new contest for a set of lecture notes offered by Scott Alexander: You can always stay in the loop and find out about upcoming episodes and new contests by subscribing to the weekly newsletter. 7. Michael Close Webinars

Message by Michael Close (US)

Lisa and I have been hosting webinars on various magic topics.

They have been well received.

Previously I have scheduled a time convenient for North American viewers. I have scheduled one for magicians in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Although it's possible to register for the webinar and watch it at a later time, I think part of the value is the ability for the viewer to ask questions.

8. Triumphant Dream - John Carey #46
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main

I think most of us would agree that Dai Vernon's presentation for the triumph effect, involving the story of a guy at the bar trying to mess you up is timeless. I've used it since my teens. However, recently I starting thinking about an alternative presentation. It soon dawned on me that the classic dream presentation, used with success by Darwin Ortiz in his dream card effect would work beautifully. I will outline my presentation and then briefly discuss the very simple method and handling.

"Sarah, last night I had a dream and you were in it. I dreamt I was working at a function in a beautiful hotel in central London and I approached you and your friends during cocktails. I took out a deck of cards and spread them and then did something crazy. I proceeded to divide the deck into two portions and shuffle face-up cards into face-down cards. I can remember right now you smiling just as you are at this moment in time. Some cards face-up, some face-down and some face-up… cards facing every which way. Next I asked you to put the thought of a card in your mind. Got one? Get one? Good.

Next I placed the deck onto your hand and slowly and mysteriously read your mind. The 4 of Hearts, the 4 of Hearts, the 4 of Hearts, right? I can recall you reacting then just as you are right now. I was about to continue and then suddenly the image of you, that deck of cards and that beautiful hotel seemed to fade away. Suddenly I heard my alarm clock go off and it jolted me out of my dream. As I got up to go downstairs, I saw a deck of cards on my table. I spread it in my hands and all the cards were face-up, except for one face-down card, standing out like a stranger in a busy crowd. I took it out and turned it over and it was the 4 of Hearts!

Let me spread these cards. Look! Every single card is facing the same way, except for one. Wow. I guess dreams really can come true!"

Method: Secretly manage the 4 of Hearts face-up on the bottom of the face-down deck. Hand to hand spread, showing a face-down deck, keeping the reversed card hidden. Next proceed to execute the Tenkai optical revolve move from Tarbell and faro shuffle supposedly face-down cards into face-up, leaving your force card face-down on top.

Now a very simple show or display: Holding the deck from above in Hindu shuffle position in the right hand, the left hand pulls out a block from the centre and allows it to settle in the left hand. Next pull off a block from the top of the right hands cards and let them drop on top of the first packet. Finally place the remaining packet on top of all, keeping a pinky break beneath it. Riffle force to your break and push off the top card of the left hand packet (force card) and raise your left hand to show the 4 of Hearts. Lower this hand and square up the deck. The rest is pure presentation. Do the divination, spread to show the deck all facing up except one card. Remove it, turn it over and conclude the mystery.

The Orchante Saga - Beginnings

Written by the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)
The White Yogi and the Canadian Magician

'THE WHITE YOGI' - FAKIR EXTRAORDINAIRE - real name was Maurice Jarvis - fire eater, sword swallower, bed of nails, - and swallowed neon light tubes. These tubes have to be specially made, in a 'U' shape, so that both connectors are at one end - this means you are swallowing double the width - a lot more difficult than a mere sword blade! In those days they were filled with a gas, which was poisonous. Not a problem if it broke in the atmosphere, but inside your body.........! Because of the tube's shape, the bottom of the 'U' bend is very fragile, the glass itself quite thin.

The slightest twitch - inadvertent swallow (gulp) and "SNAP!" To perform this feat is rather tricky - quite apart from being able to swallow the thing in the first place. You need a transformer, usually off stage, the power lead runs from it to an on-off switch which is fixed to your belt or cummerbund; from the switch two leads run up to the connections at the top of the tube. Having this switch on your person gives you instant access and total control returning the power on and off. A bit of trivia - it is very difficult, if not impossible to swallow the tube if it's very warm or hot - Why? - because it 'kind of' sticks to your insides, and, if you try to force it, "SNAP!" Not many people know that - (Michael Caine).. An awful lot of Sword-swallowers who included the neon light tube in their acts, wound up seriously ill, or worse - you know, 'kinda' dead!

The usual presentation is, - dim lights - turn tube on - show it works - turn off to cool down - position it just inside your mouth - turn on via switch on belt - and slide it carefully down - pull it out before it gets too hot - otherwise you have to leave it inside and stand dead still until it cools down. One poor chap died because as he touched the switch it shorted, giving him an electrical shock. He jumped, and "SNAP!"; the tube shattered - electrocuted, and gassed, the entire length of gullet and throat riddled with splinters of glass. Not Nice!

From a sword-swallower's point of view, the Neon tube act is the ultimate stunt. I've always wanted to do it - could never find a manufacturer in New Zealand or Australia to make them for me - afraid of adverse publicity if things went wrong. However when we were living in
Sydney, I found a chap called Otto Butkus (retired) who had performed a Fakir act years ago, including the Neon tubes He had several he was willing to sell to me - but insisted I practised with one first, to find out if I could swallow the thing before committing myself. Now, I've been swallowing swords for years, but swallowing the Neon tube, by comparison, was like trying to push a very thick broom handle down, because of the double width of the tube - (they're in a 'U' shape, remember).

At that time, things were going pretty well in Australia I had a regular slot every morning on Sydney's Channel 10 Television, performing 'Close-up' magic. The programme 'Good Morning Australia', was a Live Nation-wide broadcast, so no room for mistakes; was also working the
'Close-up' 3 or 4 nights a week at Sydney's most exclusive restaurant, 'The Manor House' (you had to be driving at least the latest 'Jag' to be able to afford to dine there. Several 'Rollers' were always parked outside da joint!), as well as performing our act in the RSLs (Returned Services Leagues) Clubs and Football/Rugby clubs - they were good times.

But I digress: Veronica, my wife, partner, assistant, etc. (it is she who types all this, and corrects my spelling and grammar) - stamped her little foot, and said "No"! Veronica was well aware of the dangers involved with the Neon light tube, and the deadly "SNAP" factor, so, THAT WAS THAT!

THE CANADIAN MAGICIAN - real name Joe Stuthard - I didn't know his name until years later when I met him at Maurie and Connie Rooklyn's home (we lived about 10 minutes away and it was my second home) at one of Maurie's many 'Magic Get-together' parties. Joe invented the Trilby deck (the name Trilby was the lady who was hypnotised by Svengali in Daphne
DuMaurier's book) which was a tapered Svengali deck. In London, Kaymar Magic was started by Harry Baron & Joe Stuthard - Joe's wife was Kay, and Harry's wife Margaret, hence Kaymar. (Thanks, Burns).

Next week - Major Marshall and the bus - Wairoa College, Hypnotism and 'The Great Benyon'.
