As most of you know New Zealand is made up of three islands in the South Pacific and is about a three-hour flight to Australia. Over the years New Zealand has turned out many professional magicians of note.

In 2000 I ran a series on the late Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante) who was my mentor and a fabulous professional magician and I would not be where I am today if it was not for him.

I have decided to re-run his Saga and his life story again as many magicians have asked me about Tommy over the years and what he was like. Refer item 12.

MagicWeek

David Berglas was presented with his Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to Magic and Psychology on Thursday, 2nd May.

The presentation was made by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and David was joined by his family for the occasion. The original New Year Honours announcement was made in MagicWeek on 29th December 2018, in issue 966.

David Berglas' extraordinary career started in the 50s. Six weeks at the Windmill Theatre in London in 1953 was followed by a whirlwind tour of variety theatres where he often topped the bill. He became a household name with his regular performances on radio, conducting "Nationwide Psychological Experiments" involving millions of listeners and had his own BBC television show "Meet David Berglas" in 1954 which had an audience of over 19 million and then hosted the first ever commercial TV series in 1955. In the 80s his series "The Mind of David Berglas" on Channel 4 entertained celebrity guests such as Omar Sharif, Britt Ekland and Christopher Lee.

In the magic world he has received most major international honours. He was President of The Magic Circle from 1989-1998 and helped revitalise the Society. During his tenure The Magic Circle admitted women as members for the very first time, established The Young Magicians Club and acquired and refurbished the old warehouse in Euston that became their first permanent HQ, naming it "The Centre for the Magic Arts".

6. Thom Peterson On The Magic Word
---------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

This week we share some laughs with international comic magician, Thom Peterson. Thom lectured at The Magic Circle a few years ago and he caught my attention. He recently traversed the U.S. with his lecture featuring close-up, stand-up, comedy and mind reading effects. His outstanding lecture includes commercial items that workers will use plus ideas for putting together your own tricks without having to buy everything. But in this podcast, Thom talks about working comedy clubs, cruise ships, weddings and the differences between performing in the U.S. versus the U.K., where he currently resides with his English wife.

You can listen to the podcast through your favorite method of listening to other podcasts, or you can visit the website for additional content plus hear the podcast at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/491-thom-peterson And be sure to sign up for our free weekly newsletter so you can get updates on upcoming guests plus news on contests and more. Timely Transposition

The following piece was inspired by two sources. Roy Walton's Time Machine in the complete Walton volume 1 and an effect called Rapid Transit in the Royal Road to Card Magic.
Prepare by secretly placing the Ace of Spades in your right Jacket pocket. Introduce the theme of time and how a deck of cards has a lot in common with the calendar. Fifty-two cards, fifty-two weeks. Twelve picture cards, twelve months in the year etc. etc.

With a clearly empty right hand remove the Ace of Spades from your pocket and drop it face-up on top of the face-down deck. Ask your spectators to remember that moment in time. Riffle down the deck and have a spectator say stop. Get them to extend a palm-up hand and deal off the card stopped at onto their hand. Have them turn it over to show say the five of Diamonds.

Request that they remember this moment in time too. Have the selection replaced face-up from the position it was stopped at and bring both hands together. Execute a top card cover pass, secretly shifting their face-up selection to second from the top, beneath your Ace of Spades.

"Let's see if we can turn back time." Give the deck a counter clockwise twist. Execute a double turnover and deal the top card onto their palm up hand. "Back to when you were holding the five of Diamonds. Turn that card over." When they do a transformation into their card will be revealed. This gives one plenty of shade or misdirection to top palm the Ace of Spades.

"Finally going back to when we started when I took a card from my pocket. The Ace of Spades. Almost like the twilight zone or maybe nothing happened!"

Remove the palmed Ace from your pocket and disclose the Ace and conclude the mystery.

12. The Orchante Saga - Beginnings
-------------------------------------
Message from Tommy Orchard (The Amazing Orchante)

The little boy watched fascinated, as the pencil, dropped a few moments ago inside the bottle, slowly, slowly, rose out from its glassy prison into the waiting fingers of his father. WHAM! - as he stood there wide-eyed, the MAGIC BUG struck - HARD, and another soul was forever lost in that wondrous world of all things magical and mystical.

So began what was to become the career of one christened Frank Thomas Henry Orchard (glad they stopped there - my mother had a hell of a lot of brothers and uncles), who by the time he was fourteen had adopted the stage name (derived from his surname) and became known as 'The Amazing ORCHANTE' (pronounced Or-Shon-tay). Tricky for some - I remember many years ago a compere in Sydney spent half an hour practising the pronunciation back-stage, then introduced me on stage, using a hard 'k - boy, were there some red faces! That's when I decided to get my friend Barry from Radio I Auckland to do a professional announcement on tape for me. (Sorry, I can't remember his last name, but I think he's on IZB now - perhaps someone in Auckland can enlighten me).

I was born in Auckland, New Zealand, on 13th September 1943, ugly as sin, all babies are - except to mothers and aunts. Years later I discovered I have a wee drop of Maori blood in me, from my mother's side - I'm rather proud of that, and I found an old photo of a great-great-great aunt - her face fully tattooed - a thing of beauty in Maori culture. I often wondered what else is in me - English probably. The New Zealand Maoris are a proud, cultured people - for all you non-New Zealanders, back in the old days they used to be cannibals, and quite a few of Captain Cook's men wound up in the cooking pot (hence the English). Puha and Pakeha they called it - puha is a sort of milkweed, and pakeha is Maori for white man.

My father was a policeman from the 'old school' - a good swift kick in the backside and a severe talking-to in front of your parents if you were naughty - but God help you if you were caught again. He wasn't a magician - just knew a couple of party- tricks, as most fathers do. He lived the life of a policeman to the full and was never really off duty. Being the son of a policeman has definite disadvantages in the popularity polls at school. Those days were not my happiest. The one thing which saved me from getting belted behind the bicycle shed just because I was the local cop's son, was my then budding magical and hypnotic skills.

I'll never forget that night of the school dance - black jacket, tie and shoes. I was made to wear my new BROWN shoes. The Headmaster sent me home 'incorrectly dressed'. Dad, in full uniform, dragged me back, exerted his authority, and there I was, the only boy in brown shoes,
looking like a dick-head (or should that be dick-foot)? That was fun!

1954 - TEN YEARS OF AGE
My father is transferred to a tiny village called Raupunga. If you were to look at a map of the North Island of New Zealand, Hawkes Bay on the East coast, you won't even find Raupunga - it's just a speck of dust between Napier and Wairoa. I believe there is now a motorway between
Raupunga and Wairoa, but in those days, it was 26 miles from Wairoa on the worst, winding, up and down hills, loose stone chipping road in history with the resultant unbelievable clouds of dust which hung in the air, forever! Believe me, it was a major journey - around an hour and a
half in a car. It really was 26 miles of bad road, felt more like FORTY! (Duane Eddy)

My sister and I were the only two white kids at the local school - the brand new police house was only one of two homes not made out of corrugated iron. I can still remember trotting up the road to the nearest farm, billy-can in hand, for our daily milk, straight out of the cow, still warm for breakfast.

I'm trying to paint the scene of total isolation, miles, hard miles from anywhere. Why? Because this is where I saw my first professional magician. He was known as THE FUN DOCTOR (his real name was Norman Tate). He was so old my parents remember him from when they went to school. I can still remember him playing the piano with his nose, juggling, balancing tables and chairs on his forehead and one magic trick that has stuck in my brain to this day - where a small block of wood, threaded on a long string, would slide down and stop whenever he ordered it to.
