3. Homage to Fechter - John Carey #23

Eddie Fechter was a true master of his craft and all of his card material was aimed primarily to dazzle the laymen at his bar at the Forks Hotel. His book written by Jerry Mentzer is chock full of gold.

One of my personal favourites from the book is Mr Fechter's That's It! Essentially an approach to Charlie Millers classic Dunbury Delusion, the running line of That's It!, the interaction and the knockout finish make the routine an absolute gem.

The following approach works away from the deck and is simply my preferred way of doing the effect. Hand out the deck for shuffling and then ask your helper to deal five cards into a tabled packet and then set the deck down. Pick up the packet and start transferring cards one at a time from top to bottom and ask the spectator to say stop. When stopped raise the face of the packet towards them and ask them to remember the face card. Let's say it's the Three of Clubs. Lower the packet and run off three cards in an overhand shuffle and throw the remaining cards on top. Then run two cards and shuffle off. This simple mix positions the selection second from the bottom efficiently.

Mention you will try and discern the spectator's selection by the inflection in their voice. Tell them you will show them the face of each card and they are simply to call out that's it, regardless of whether it is their card or not.
Turn over the top card and call it out. Let your helper call out "That's It!" and then turn the card face-down and discard it in top of the deck. Execute a block push off and triple turnover, showing the selection. Once your helper has called out that's it, repeat the block push off and turn the triplet face-down and discard what they think is their selection on top of the deck and cut the deck and complete the cut. This is a very strong moment in the effect.

Mention that you didn't get any clues or tells from the first two cards, but believe it has to be one of the remaining three cards. Turn the top card of the packet faceup, showing an x card. The spectator calls out that's it and after pausing you state that's not their card either. Discard it on the deck. Deal the remaining two cards in a row on the table. The selection is on the left. Continue to act confident, even though your spectators will believe you've screwed up!
Pick up the card on the right and display its face, calling out the card. One last time the spectator calls out That's It. A moment later discard this card on the deck and ask your helper to put their finger on top of the remaining card. Then ask them to call out the name of their card. They will say Three of Clubs. Look shocked and then look over to the deck. This is a beautiful moment. Act it out. To finish the affect, ask the spectator to turn over the card under their finger to reveal the selection.

"That's it!!!"

4. Conveying And Using Personality - #509 - Kyle Peron

I posted recently on Facebook asking a simple question. What is one of the best qualities or traits you feel makes for a good magician and why? It was an interesting discussion that brought about a lot of great answers and opinions. However, one item kept coming up by many people. It is a single word called "personality". It was so great seeing so many folks give value to personality over other things.

I really think personality is so underrated in magic today. People just simply forget the power it has in everything we do. A trick is just a trick. The people want to like you. If you take the same trick and place it in the hands of someone who has and conveys personality and then someone who does not, it looks like a totally different effect to a lay audience. It really is that stunning to see happen.

Tricks alone do not really mean anything by themselves. A trick will not happen or work without the magician. Place a deck of cards on a table and they are not going to start doing an ACR routine by themselves. If they do, then start to run real quick. It is YOU that makes the difference and it is YOU that makes the magic happen. If this is the case, then focus should be on you and not the prop or trick you are presenting.

But what is it about you? It is your personality that really makes the audience enjoy the experience and enjoy you in the process.

I honestly feel that people want to be entertained way more than they want to be fooled. People want to walk away having had fun with the experience of what they just saw happen. Take some of the best acts out there today. Take a look at the ones that you really love to watch perform. It is safe to say that you enjoy them because 95% of their act is not solely based on the magic alone. There is more to what they provide isn't there? The good entertainers are that way because a majority of their act is interacting with the audience in a comical entertaining way, engaging, dialogue, connecting, talking. etc. It is the essence of their personality that makes you enjoy what they do.

It is interaction and expressing personality. It is taking the audience on a journey and getting them laughing and having fun instead of just seeking the WOW only.

I think that is key. If you could take away the trick in any performance, and safely say the routine is still entertaining, then I think you have something. Take away the props and the trick and then
look at what that performer does. I can safely say the entertainers that "get it" are the ones who without any of these props, can still entertain and audience and have them enjoying every minute of it. This is the essence and importance of personality in magic.

There is a quote that was shared to be by my good friend Dan Birch. Dan said the quote goes like this. "If they walk away saying remember the trick that the magician did, then I have failed. But if they say remember the magician who did that trick, then I have succeeded." I was so glad Dan shared this with me because it got me thinking that it is your personality that makes them remember you.

I think that is a key to developing a likeable character. Some magicians try to focus so much on the trick only that they are void of any personality at all. I want the audience remembering me not my deck of cards.

No one is saying not to have the tricks. What we are saying is that the focus of any performance should not be on the trick itself. The trick is just a prop. The focus should be on personality and using that personality to truly take the effect to an entertaining level. It is giving the audience more to enjoy. You add personality into what you do and I guarantee your audiences will thank you for it.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

5. 2018 The Assembly Convention, Brisbane, Australia
--------------------------------------------
Message by Sean Piper (Australia)

Email: hello@pipermagic.com.au

It is with tremendous pleasure we welcome one of Australia's most talented performers and Brisbane native PHIL CASS & PHILIPPA to The Assembly in 2019. Phil is a show-business professional who has actively pursued excellence in live entertainment for the last 36 years. On five separate occasions, Phil was nominated by his peers in the entertainment industry as one of the top 5 variety entertainers in Australia, of any category… and was finally awarded the Gold 'MO' Award for Australian Performer of the Year in 2014/15! During their career Phil & Philippa have been honoured with 27 show business awards for excellence in live entertainment...

8 'MO' Awards for Best Speciality Act in Australia; 8 Awards from the Queensland Wallace Awards including The Entertainer of the Year Award; 3 Comedy Sight Act Awards from the Australian Club Entertainment Awards (ACE); 7 magicians of the year type awards; and as already mentioned 2014/15 Gold 'Mo' Award for Australian Performer of the Year.

Further, Philippa was awarded at the New Zealand Magic Convention in October 2015 by Magic New Zealand, a Life Time Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding work as a professional magic assistant and stage partner.

He is considered by his peers to be Australia's #1 corporate comedy magic act, and with a middle name like 'Trust Me' you can be sure of one thing… Phil Cass defies the conventional pattern of mayhem in live entertainment with his unique on-stage persona that safely runs the gamut from insult to result!

His lecture for magicians, seen in over a dozen countries, will consist of both close-up and stand-up effects that are guaranteed commercial items as they are or have been regular excerpts from his show. The emphasis will be on comedy magic that is performed with a strong on-stage personality. Magic that is both amazing and entertaining on an emotional level.

I'm personally delighted that Phil & Philippa have agreed to join us in Brisbane for the convention. This is promising to be a do not miss event!

A reminder that registrations will be limited, so to ensure you don't miss out register now.

Message by Paul Romhany

If you are a magician, juggler, ventriloquist or any variety artist then you will love listening to The Variety Artists Podcast.

Recent guest was Paul Romhany. My interview with Paul Romhany is now available.

Paul Romhany was the first recipient of the Robert Houdin award. His fellow New Zealand countrymen named him the 18th "Grand Master of Magic" He has nearly 100 magic products on the market.

Paul is the creator and editor of VANISH - International Magic Magazine (If you haven't yet subscribed, why not!? It's full of great info, it's on-line, and it's free!)

How is an 8 year old boy inspired by a silent film star? Why did Paul create the first (and best) on-line magic magazine?

Performing in theaters, traveling the world, editing the magazine. How does he get all that stuff done? I am both honored and privileged to bring you this interview. Enjoy!

Excellent questions from Eddy Rice Jr. & Hal Meyers!

8. Parent Assembly Magician Of The Year 2019
--------------------------------------------
Message by George Schindler (US)

Parent Assembly of the Society of American Magicians to Present 110th Annual Salute to Magic Show, March 30th at the Abrons Arts Center's Historic Playhouse Theater

David Kaye Honored as Magician of the Year

New York City, November 8, 2018 - Over the course of more than a century legendary talents of magic have performed in the annual Salute to Magic show presented by the Parent Assembly of the Society of American Magicians. Harry Houdini, Dai Vernon, Joseph Dunninger and Dante are just a few of the acclaimed magicians who have appeared.

This year the 110th Annual Salute to Magic will be held Saturday, March 30, 2019 in the Abrons Arts Center's historic Playhouse Theater. The Salute is the longest-running annual magic show anywhere and has been a consistent source of inspiration and entertainment for generations of magic lovers of all ages.

"The historic Playhouse Theater at Abrons Arts Center is an intimate jewel-box of a venue that will provide the perfect showcase for the acts of conjuring and variety art that comprise our show," said Herb Scher, First Vice President of Parent Assembly, #1 and Producer of this year's Salute. We look forward to presenting a production that fills this fabules space with dynamic acts and many surprises." The theater is located in Manhattan at 466 Grand Street, on the Lower East Side.

Magician of the Year
For the last 51 years the Salute to Magic has also been the occasion for the Assembly to honor its Magician of the Year, a notable figure in the field of magic or someone who has substantially contributed to the mission of the organization. This year's honoree is David Kaye, who is both an internationally recognized and highly influential professional magician as well as an active and dedicated member of the Assembly who plays an important role in helping it fulfill its mission to support the art of magic.

David is widely known in magic as a leader in the field of children's magic. He performs regularly for children in New York City, appears frequently as a lecturer at magic conferences across the globe, and has published two influential books on children's magic. He has been profiled in The New Yorker magazine, has himself appeared on numerous magazine covers, and writes a regular column for Genii, the world's most widely circulated magic magazine.

Among his notable performances are appearances at the White House and Lincoln Center. David was previously honored with a Performing Fellowship from the Academy of Magical Arts, in Hollywood which is the highest honor a magician can receive. David currently is the President of the Parent Assembly where he shapes the agenda of the organization, and last year, as its First Vice President, was responsible for producing the 2018 Salute to Magic.

The Society of American Magicians was founded in 1902 and its Parent Assembly, its first chapter, is the largest and oldest magic club in New York City. The Assembly promotes and elevates the art of magic by presenting shows for the public, holding monthly membership meetings often featuring magic instruction from notable magicians, and performing shows for community organizations at no charge to them. Through its meetings and other activities, the Assembly engenders camaraderie in the magic community leading to collaboration and to a wide variety of official and casual projects.

The Abrons Arts Center's Playhouse Theater opened in 1915 and has been home to many groundbreaking productions throughout its history. Today it is part of the Henry Street Settlement, which delivers a wide range of social service, arts, and health care programs to more than 50,000 New Yorkers each year. The Parent Assembly's Salute to Magic will be performed at the Abrons Arts Center as part of the @Abrons program.

Ticket prices and the bill of performers will be announced at a later date. For the latest information visit magicsampa1.com.

10. Creating The Impossible
--------------------------------------------
Message by Chris Wardle

Methods for Magic

A new book by Chris Wardle and James Ward - both award-winning members of The Magic Circle, with a long list of credits devising magic for books, magazines, television, radio and the stage.

In this new book they share their simple and practical methodologies, whilst using examples of their own creations to illustrate their points. Inside you will explore workable, practical ways to devise your own magic and methods for making effects 'your own' so as to be able to offer something unique to your audiences.

Included are a brand new take on 'The Jigsaw Card' and a Date Prediction with a kicker finish by Chris and an ingenious name matching idea and a memory-cheating effect 'Eye Witness' from James, to name but a few.

This book will inspire you and set you on the right path for 'Creating the Impossible'.

"'Creating the Impossible' is that rare thing, an original and practical handbook for magicians...Chris Wardle and James Ward have taught themselves to be inventive, resourceful and sharp. In short, they are the right kind of expert. They are creative. They are ingenious. Read
this book carefully and I believe their ingenuity will start to rub off on you." From the Foreword by Geoffrey Durham.

"Chris and James have done a wonderful job with this book which I don't think has existed before. Useful for both creators and those who are new to creating magic, this book will inspire and educate the reader on the creative process. I feel all magicians should read this book. I love it!" Angelo Carbone

'Both Chris and James have the ability to take simple ideas and, by the addition of layers of subtlety and ingeniously-devised presentations, build them into entertaining mysteries, many of which have found their way into the repertoires of leading professional magicians. This is
because they instinctively understand what appeals to the public.' Walt Lees, editor of Repro Magic's magazine 'The Magician' (formerly Club 71), 'Mystery Magazine' and 'Abracadabra', the world's longest running weekly magic magazine.

11. Australian Magic Market
---------------------------------------
Message by Dave Boyd (Australia)

I have started a Facebook site called Australian Magic Market Place. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2084689978231570/

It is a free site on which Australian and New Zealand magicians can advertise magic that is surplus to their needs. It is not for commercial businesses. But for fellow Magician's to buy and sell magic that they no longer perform.

What prompted me to set up the site is at 84 I feel it is time to hang up my wand. Over the next couple of months I will be sorting through my magic props, books, videos and putting them up for sale. There must be others in a similar situation but where to advertise them for sale. So was born this site.

My email address if any one has any questions is boyddp@hotmail.com

Thanks
Dave Boyd. (Magic Moutain's Mr Magic)
