2. Mystique in Stockholm
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tom Stone (Sweden)

Mystique: Swedish experimental magic.

The project "Mystique" is well into its second year now.
In the summer of 2017, Tom Stone got together with a few friends - all with experience from the magic courses at the Stockholm University of Arts - and decided to start a project to test their creativity.

So once a month, the four magicians (Tom Stone, Leif Olberius, Martin Hansson & John-Henry Larsson) get together and create a whole new evening show (2 x 40 minutes), perform it once in a small theater for an audience of 80 spectators. Then the show is scrapped, and the work begins to create next month's show. No material is recycled from show to show.

To ensure that the artistic goals aren't corrupted by money, the team does not take any of the proceeds. That is instead invested in bringing in guest performers from Europe, to fund flights and hotels.

So far, the guest performers have been:

Gaston (Sweden),
Hedne (Norway),
Arkadia (Sweden),
Alexandra Duvuvier (France),
Fritz Alkemade (Holland),
Isidor Olsbjörk (Sweden),
Will Houstoun (England),
David Persson (Sweden),
Wolfgang Moser (Austria),
Gisell (Spain),
Alana (Germany)
Håkan Berg (Sweden),
Javi Benitez (Spain),

In the upcoming shows, the guest performers will be Billy Kidd, Laura London and Robert Jägerhorn.

A few examples of what the group do can be seen here:

5. My Cards Are Your Cards! - John Carey #20
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Carey (UK)
https://carey-scene.com/jc-main

The Last Trick of Doctor Jacob Daley, published in the Dai Vernon Book of Magic, is quite rightly considered a classic of card magic. The effect, one of transposition between the red and the black Aces, is a crowd pleaser. Many notable workers have published versions. The following is simply a personalised presentation in an attempt to amplify the effect for the people.

Firstly my presentation:
"You know, 52 cards is sometimes a lot to focus on Shannon. So in an attempt to make everything crystal clear, I will remove just 4 cards from the deck. These 2 go onto the table. I'll even show you the others, the red Aces. Here, take them and mix them up.

Do you remember playing guessing games as a child? Great fun wasn't it?

Just make a guess and tell me what you think this card is. The Ace of Hearts it is! Now if these are the red Aces, the cards on the table are? That's right, the black Aces. This Ace of Spades is said by some to have mystical properties.
Hold out your hand and we'll leave you holding the Ace of Clubs. I'll take the Ace of Spades and place it under the red Aces. But imagine we could go back in time and the Spade is back on top! Please hold it. In fact cover both cards between your palms and I will hold the red Aces.
Let's take this a step further, Shannon. I will attempt to make my red Aces disappear. Sometimes if mine disappear, then so do the others. Did you feel yours disappear?

But I really want to give you the power sir. Please shake my hand. This is of course a standard social greeting exchange. But it can sometimes exchange other things...

Have a look at your cards now? Because my cards are now yours and your cards are mine!"

Method: Remove the Aces and set them in Club, Spade, red Aces order from the top down. Set the black Aces face-down onto the table without disturbing their order. Show the faces of the red Aces to your helper and invite them to mix them. Take them back and take either Ace and ask them to guess or intuit which Ace it is?

Flip it face-up on top of the other red Ace and comment on how they did, regardless whether they were right or wrong. This provides enough time misdirection for the upcoming John Bannon switch to work. It was published in a routine called amongst the discards in Josh Jay's talk about tricks column in Magic magazine.

Ask your helper what the 2 cards on the table should be based on assumption? Drop the cards in hand on top of the tabled packet, pick it up and turn it over bringing the Ace of Spades into view.
Comment on how this card is said by some to have mystical properties. Push it off into the right hand, bringing the Ace of Clubs into view. Execute a double push off and turnover and place the switched in red Ace onto their hand.

Flip the Ace of Spades face-down and execute a two-card push off, taking a double card and place it beneath the other card. Make the moment and then double turnover again to show the Spade back on top.

Allow this moment to register and then flip the double card face-down and deal the switched in red Ace on top of the card in their hand. Both of you cover your cards between the palms as you segue into the attempt to vanish the cards gambit. Nothing happens...
Then extend a hand and shake their hand as you say you will attempt to exchange 'the power'. I first saw Larry Jennings use this brilliant idea in an effect called handshake transposition, on a video he shot for Dominique Duvivier.

To conclude the piece have your spectator turn over his cards to reveal a magical exchange has indeed taken place. He has your red Aces and you have his black!

7. The Power of Saying Thanks - #505 - Kyle Peron

How often do you really say thanks? Now how often do you say, express and show thanks to the client you're performing for? If you are really honest with yourself, the answer may be "very little". In this day and age of service providers, we can get into this thinking that what we do
is provide a service, get paid and move on. But what can really come out of saying thanks or giving a thank you card to your client? This is what I want to explore in more detail in this week's article.

When I am at the event, I give the client a really nice thank you kit. This is our way of saying thank you to them and they really appreciate the effort and time taken to do this for them. Then a few days after the actual event, I do a follow up e-mail with them simply thanking them again for what they did and any help they may have given my wife and I.

Now let me turn the tables around a little bit. What if you were the client and hired someone to come out and fix your electric. Their JOB is to fix it and do the best job that they can. They really do not have to do more than that as I am paying them for fixing it and solving a problem I am faced with.

Now what if a few days later I receive a thank you card or letter or gift from the person or company? That would just make me feel great about the experience and makes me remember it more. If the person did a great job, I am now even more impressed, I feel good about the situation and I certainly will keep their name in the top of my head for future use.

If I really liked the service, the thank you may also prompt me to refer them and their services to others I know.

Do they have to send a thank you note or gift? Certainly not. Does it help them and their business? Yes, it does indeed.

I send out thank you cards to every client I work with and even to those who helped me at the event. If someone helped carry my stuff in from my truck, I try to get their information and I send them a thank you card as well.

Do I have to do this? Once again... no I do not. I WANT to do this because I feel good about building the relationship with the individuals and because I want to thank them for what they have done for me.

I have seen the power of what a simple thank you note or card can do. I have seen it time and again. People will remember you for it and will thank you for it as well.

I personally have had festivals hire me back the next year simply because I expressed thanks to them. When I talk with them after the event I have had many of them open up to me and personally say, "I just wanted you to realize something. Not sure if this makes any difference
to you but it did to me. Out of all the acts I have hired over the years, you were the ONLY entertainer who actually sent me a thank you card the next week. I still have that card as a reminder that there are folks out there who make a difference."

Now this may not happen to everyone and people may not actually tell you things like this. However, mark my word that it does indeed leave a good lasting impression in their minds. This is a feeling and impression I want them to remember from the experience with having me at their event.

I will leave you with this. If you could willing KNOW you are building a good relationship with a client and could KNOW that your name is being remembered long after an event.... then why wouldn't anyone feel that it is worth the price of a simple stamp?

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at Kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

9. Actors Training for Magicians Stockholm
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tom Stone (Sweden)

Acting skills is not something that 'magically' appear when you need it.

Instead, you have to practice acting techniques just as much as your magic techniques if you want to be good at it.

But how do you do that? How do you practice acting techniques, if you don't know what they are?

This is a two day workshop where you will be guided through some basic actor's training, like impulse training, focus, rhythm and tempo shifting.

All with an eye on how it relates to magic performances.

You will learn to understand what you and your body are expressing on stage, and how to apply acting techniques during magic performances on stage.

Your instructor is Leif Olberius, a trained actor and magician who have had his own theater company.

Limited to 8 participants.

10. Tom Stone Workshops
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tom Stone (Sweden)

London, Stockholm, Oslo, Gothenburg

We all eventually reach a spot where we feel stuck, or caught. A spot where our original ambitions have been both reached and surpassed, and in lieu finding new goals to strive towards, we continue the motions without really getting anywhere. Almost all performers recognize this. But where all other artistic fields have solutions for that, we in magic have none. Professional singers, even the famous ones, still take classes to maintain and further their abilities. Dancers, the same. But for magicians? There is almost nothing. Until now!

Tom Stone is taking his "Art of Magic" workshop on the road. Three full days, designed for magicians who feel stuck in their evolution.

It contains exercises to make you reexamine, question and update the very basics of magic.
It gives you exercises in both dramatic and deceptive structures.

It goes deep into advanced misdirection.

The three days contains deep theory that will make you head spin, as well as hilarious silliness that will make you happy.

No matter how jaded you are, and the end of these three days, your passion and enthusiasm will have been reignited.

Limited to 12 participants.
