The highlight for the week for Michele and I was to attend the Brotherhood of Auckland Magicians annual BBQ last night. As usual it was a roaring success. This year's surprise entertainment was by international magicians Clive St. James Greenaway (UK) and Zeus Zs (Spain). We had a rousing sing-a-long with talented singer and magician Sean O'shea and also Carla entranced us all with a delightful song showcasing her very special voice that won her school singing competition recently.

What Do Audiences Really Think?

The College of New Jersey, with the help of Joshua Jay, conducted a study to find out what audiences think of magic and magicians. Over 500 participated in what was called "Magic by the Numbers," and the results were surprising. Josh wrote an extensive article about the study in the final issue of MAGIC Magazine. At MAGIC Live, he shared a few of the things that shocked him, including:

What is the one thing you can do that, without changing a trick or even a single word, will improve your show by 50%?

Is your approach to getting a volunteer totally wrong?

What is the most forgettable kind of magic (turns out that it's card tricks) and how can you fix that?

What does your audience like the most about magic and magicians, and what do they like the least?

"What Do Audiences Really Think?" is the third in our collection of General Session talks now available online. I hope you enjoy these signature presentations from MAGIC Live!

A Brief History of Magic on the Internet with Jim Sisti

This week on The Magic Word Podcast we go back in time (about 25 years) to the "beginnings" of dial-up modems and Bulleting Board Systems (BBS) where magic digital forums began. Jim Sisti (editor of the former "Magic Menu") and Scott Wells chat about these beginnings and take it up through the current landscape with YouTube, online forums, blogs, podcasts and more plus a few prognostications of where this might all go within the next few years.

We also talk about Richard Robinson's "obsession" with his AllMagic.com website over the years and creating the "Robinson Wizard Magic Encyclopedia" which is a digital version of today's "Tarbell Course in Magic" complete with hundreds of online resources.

You can watch a trailer about the "Magic Encyclopedia", enter the new contest, see some photos, read the blog, listen online to the podcast, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/402-internet-magic-with-jim-sisti Also, be sure to enter the contest for a chance to win a copy of the flash drive to access over 4GB of material on the internet. This is valued at nearly $100 and available to one lucky winner. The entry form is on the bottom of this week's blog.

Thanks for listening,
Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

5. Creativity And "Falling In Love With Ourselves" #473 - Kyle Peron

I have been discussing creativity and what hinders us from being creative thinkers. I wanted to take the opportunity to expand and explore this topic a bit more with you. I feel that in order for anyone to become a better creative thinker of magic, you must first 1) define
creativity and 2) know what hinders you from being creative. Once you know these 2 things, you can work towards breaking down those barriers.

As I worked on my creativity lecture, I realized that it would be a good idea to address the definition of creativity. I knew what I personally felt it was, but realized it would be a good idea to establish how Webster's Dictionary defines it. What I found out was VERY fascinating.

Keep in mind that what I am going to tell you is not and has not been changed in any way. It is straight out of the dictionary. "Creativity can be defined as something created rather than imitated." WOW! That just really opened my eyes. Read it again and let it sink in more.

What it is saying is that imitation is NOT creativity. Taking someone else's routine or act and "borrowing" it, is not being creative. Besides, in my book it is just wrong. Being creative means stepping away from what you have seen and taking a different path.

So, if we know that imitation is not creativity, what else hinders us from being as creative as we each can be? Well one thing is certainly this notion of magicians falling in love with themselves. Allow me to explain. I am an artist and have been all my life. Artist are
just...well... weird folks. We admit that. However, even artists have less egos then most of us magicians. Magicians seem to think that the world evolves and revolves around them. If you have ever been to a magic convention, you know what I am talking about.

But what tends to happen to us magicians? Well the beauty of magic is the fact that we as magicians get the joy out of knowing the secrets of magic. We get empowered by the techniques we discover. Just think back to the first effect you ever saw and learned? Pretty amazing feeling wasn't it? This is what tends to draw magicians to learn more and seek
more. It becomes our drug of sorts.

Knowing the secrets and techniques is not wrong. After all, they are the tools that allow us to create in the first place. However, what happens is that we start to love the techniques of magic so much that we forget who our audience really is.

We may know and learn 50 ways to vanish a card. To us they are all different and unique and we love them. But just because you know 50 ways to vanish a card does not mean your audience wants to see all 50 ways in one act. To a lay audience, you vanish a card and produce a card and the rest looks the same.

What happens to magicians is that we spend so much time perfecting out crafts and fine tuning the tools we use that we start to fall in love with them. We love the technique behind what we do so much that we feel we have to place it in the act just because WE love it.

Once you start doing this, it becomes a hard habit to break. It hinders creativity because you force to place things in the act not because they make sense or add to the entertainment value, but because we like them.

One must always think of who the audience is and who you are performing for. You must remember what you want to say to them and express to them. Enjoy what you perform and create, but remember that a magician is a very lonely person without an audience to perform for.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

10. A Profile Of Dai Vernon For Canadian Television
--------------------------------------------
Message by David Ben (Canada)

Nearly twenty years ago, I was able to collaborate with my friend, filmmaker Daniel Zuckerbrot, on a profile of Dai Vernon for Canadian television. At the time, I believed that Vernon was the most influential magician of the twentieth century. I have since reconsidered and now think that he is the most influential magician of all time. This project became an important stone along the path to Dai Vernon: A Biography, published in 2007.

In addition to the insight provided by performers who knew Vernon, including Max Maven, Herb Zarrow, John Carney, Jackie Flosso, Ricky Jay, Steve Freeman and Persi Diaconis, it was an important opportunity for Vernon's children, Edward and Derek Verner, to share their own thoughts and feelings about their father, the magician. It also featured black-and-white silent footage of a younger Vernon demonstrating sleight-of-hand which we had converted and professionally retouched for the film.

While the film was very well received, it was only available briefly for purchase as a VHS cassette, which was subsequently pirated. The film pops up regularly online, always low-quality copies of copies shared without any credit to those who made the project possible.

Now is our chance to fix that. We have provided Historica Canada with a clean copy, transferred from the broadcast master. It is now available to view on-line for free as part of their Canadian Biography series. A copy can also be viewed through the Screening Room at Magicana.
