IMPORTANT NOTICE: I will be out of the country next week and the next issue of Magic New Zealand will be published a day or so before Sunday 6th August.

This week a special highlight for Michele and I was seeing Richard Turner's movie Dealt.

Just love the movie - in one word it was INSPIRING. Richard's truly dedicated to cards! Good seeing so many of our Magic friends in the movie too. You must see Dealt to understand Richards sheer willpower in overcoming obstacles in life.

Simon Drake opens a new magic shop in the grounds of his exclusive magic venue Simon Drake's House of Magic (Est. 1995). The shop is open on all public shows and at other times by special appointment, for magicians and magic collectors only.

Simon is also offering a small selection of original effects by mail order from his website and has several of his own very special illusions performed on 'The Secret Cabaret' and 'Raising Hell with Iron Maiden' for sale that don't fit in the shop but are stored at the venue. One of these is a very rare but still robust Cremation Illusion. Once owned by Billy McComb this all metal prop has 'cremated' many celebrities including Orson Welles in the 1960s!

As a children's performer, how often do we get lost in the business of what we do? How many times do we worry about the hyper kid or the parent who doesn't care? How many times do we each call in a show simply because we are worried about the trip home or the bills that have to be paid?

If we are honest with each other, the answer is probably that it does happen. Maybe not all the time, but we are only human. We fall into these "traps" regardless of what we do.

We forget what it means to be a children's entertainer. We forget the joy that we felt as a child watching magic happen in front of us. We forget the amazed feelings we had seeing something appear from nowhere. We lose track of the amount of times we tried to make the magic happen ourselves yet had no real clue how to do it.

I recently had a rude awakening at a gig that brought all this back to my mind again. I was doing strolling magic and this little 4-year-old boy was crying. I may never know why, but he was not having a good time at all.

I started doing some ball manipulations to the music the DJ was playing. I was not paying much attention but out of the corner of my eye I see the child inch closer and the tears start to dry up. I started making the ball appear under my hat and a smile formed on this kid's face.

For 5 minutes this child watched me as if magic to him was something TRULY special. He stopped crying and was transfixed into everything he was seeing me do. His laughter made me laugh. His smile made me smile. His mother could not believe just how engulfed her son was in what I was doing.

Now I do not share this here as an ego thing. Instead I share it because for those 5 minutes I saw magic through the eyes of a child. I saw magic the way I remember seeing it so many years ago. I remembered what it was like to just totally believe in magic and to just allow oneself to be 'Entertained". No more and no less...to be entertained and not only fooled.

Through this child's own eyes, I got to feel like a kid again. But most of all, I got to remember the POWER each children's magician has inside of us. We have this ability we often take for granted.

We have the ability to make a child smile and laugh and forget about things even for just a few moments. We are often the very first live magician that child may have ever seen. It is our duty and our JOB to never allow ourselves to give anything less than 100% effort every time out.

We must remind ourselves to see magic through the eyes of a child. We must remind ourselves of the joy magic can bring to a young one and how we can shape how that child views magicians from that day forward.

I may never know what will become of that child I saw that day. However, I do know that through his eyes, I saw magic again the way I first felt when I was his age. I remembered what being a children's performer is all about.

As much as his mother thanked me, I should be thanking him for allowing me to realize just how wonderful it is to do what we do.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So, if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at kylekellymagic@gmail.com. I would love to hear from you.

6. John Moehring Memorial Service August 26, 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Magic Friends,

This is a "hold the date" announcement.

We will gather to celebrate the life of our friend John Moehring on Saturday, August 26 2017 at 11:00 am. The celebration will be held at the IATSE Local 51 Meeting Hall, 3030 North Freeway, Houston. Further details will follow. Please share this to help us spread the word in the community. Please feel free to contact me at my phone number below or by direct email at meholstein@outlook.com with questions.

John, the "Texan Trixter", passed away on July 9 at his residence at Brookdale Shadowlake Assisted Living community in Houston after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. He was 74. Moehring was born in Houston on July 19, 1942, and grew up in Rockdale, Texas where he first developed an interest in magic. He was self-taught in the art, reading techniques in books and watching magicians on television. As a teenager, he quickly rose to prominence with his award-winning magic act. He eventually caught the eye of a producer for Ed Sullivan television show, the highest rated variety entertainment program at that time, while he was performing in the Texas State Pavilion at the World's Fair, New York in 1966. John appeared on the Ed Sullivan show on April 24, 1966. That appearance led to extensive bookings in nightclubs, on cruise ships, and in theaters around the world.

John later became a producer of shows in theme parks, including AstroWorld in Houston, and produced "The Wizard's Secrets", one of the longest running and most attended attractions in Las Vegas. Moehring was also an author of books on magic, including successful biographies of magicians Del Ray and Marshall Brodien. He served as a writer, director, and creative consultant to many famous magicians. He also served as associate editor of Magic Magazine and chief editor to M.U.M magazine, both trade publications to magicians.

He returned to Houston on retirement in 2011. He is survived by his son Charles Moehring, his sister Jeanne Moehring-Haley, his brother in law Frank Haley and his cousins Darr Kuykendall and Holly Kuykendall-Bryant of The Grove, Texas. Arrangements are pending.

8. Broken Wand Heathcote Williams
--------------------------------------------
Simon Drake (UK)

Poet, playwright, polemicist, painter, sculptor, magician, fire-eater, humorist, actor, ecologist and activist Heathcote Williams passed away earlier this month. Heathcote was a terrific magician and a dear friend of some 35 years. At his funeral, attended by about 600 people, Lord Gowrie quoted the great English playwright Harold Pinter who cited Heathcote as another William Blake or Percy Shelley. In short Heathcote was an irreplaceable genius of our times and a very funny, incredibly kind man. Typically he donated all profits for 'Whale Nation', the longest and most profitable poem in modern times to Greenpeace.

He leaves two daughters, China and Lily, a son Charlie and three grandchildren. At the service Heathcote's seven-year-old grandson transformed tears into loud laughter by gleefully recalling one of the jokes taught him by his mischievous grandfather,
Q: 'Why do women wear makeup and perfume?'
A: 'Because they're ugly and they smell'.

9. Personal Tribute to Celeste Evans
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (US)

As you know by now, Celeste Evans sadly died Tuesday night.

Now we are looking ahead to the September Linking Ring issue, and want to publish an In Memoriam to her, like we have done in the past for other special magicians. We are looking for personal tributes to her.

While we would welcome "general" tributes to her (such as "Celeste was a wonderful human being and a good magician"), these don't mean very much. So, if you don't have some personal story or anecdote or special memory, don't think you have to say something.

BUT, what I'm really looking for are any special and personal moments you had with her or saw or heard about her, and which might be lost without your telling: that time she showed you where she concealed her doves, or that time she had a costume malfunction or the joke she (or you) pulled that backfired or how she used rubber cement in an unusual way. You get the idea.

We have a couple of weeks to put this together, but don't delay and forget about this.

And thank you in advance. Please send to me at crylds@att.net And please forward this to anyone you think or know knew her.

Celeste Evans, 85, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, died July 25, 2017. Her I.B.M. membership number was 67620, and she had been a member since 2008. She also was a member of Ring 387, (Abbottsford, British Columbia), which is named for her. Born Margaret Ruth Evans on New Year's Eve, 1931 on the border of Canada and the United States -in White Rock, British Columbia - she was one of the first female magicians to earn world-wide fame, and some say was the greatest female magician of all time.

She became fascinated with magic at age nine, and took as a personal challenge a comment by a teenage boy that she couldn't be a magician "because she was a girl." Mostly self-taught, Celeste rose to the top of the magic world, earning the title of "The Beauty of Magic," and many awards and recognitions along the way. She is featured in many magic museums throughout the world, and magicians still ask "Where did she hide her doves?" She told her story in an autobiography, "I Can Still See Me," (SPS Publications, 2010). Survivors include her daughter, Evanna Breyn Brening; son, Evan Breyn; and grandchildren Ethan (19) and Rachel (17) Breyn.
