3. Broken Wands - Bob Cassidy And Daryl Easton
--------------------------------------------
Message posted on Facebook by Justin Gentry (US)

I've thought a while on how to put into words how I feel since last night.

In the last 24 hours - our small magical universe lost two luminaries. Men who, in one way or another, inspired and instructed many of those in our art. Gone too soon.

Some of us were lucky enough to meet them in life. Others of us were only lucky enough to know them through their works and teaching.

Regardless, we stood on their shoulders and will continue to do so for as long as we continue to work in the mystery arts.

To Bob Cassidy and Daryl Easton. Thank you for everything you have given the world; for you gave all that you had.

We break a wand in your honor. May you now rest.

Article forward by Peter Rollinson

Magician Daryl Easton, 61, Found Dead After Killing Himself in Hollywood's Famed Magic Castle

Magician Daryl Easton was found dead inside Hollywood's famed Magic Castle on Friday, according to multiple reports. He was 61.

The body of the entertainer - widely known for his sleight of hand card tricks - was discovered in a closet of the famed private club that offers upscale dining and magic shows, ABC-7 reported.

Police have ruled his death a suicide, the New York Daily News reported, after the Los Angeles Fire Department had responded to calls from the popular venue at 7:25 p.m. local time.

The Magic Castle, which opened its doors in 1963, confirmed Easton's death early Saturday in a statement on their Facebook page.

The Academy of Magical Arts Mourns the Passing of Daryl

Hollywood - Feb. 25, 2017 - For Immediate Release - The Academy of Magical Arts (AMA) and the Magic Castle mourn the passing of celebrated magician and AMA family member, Daryl.

Daryl, who was performing at the Magic Castle this week, was found dead on the club's premises on the evening of Friday, Feb. 24, and his death has been ruled a suicide by the Los Angeles Police Department.

The magic community mourns the loss of one of our most beloved and talented performers and the AMA's deepest regrets and heart-felt sympathy go out to Daryl's family.

Daryl was a World Champion, first-place FISM Gold medal winning, close-up magician with over 40 years of experience in both performing and selling the finest magic in the world. Daryl performed as a headline act at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for seven years fine tuning his already encyclopedic knowledge of magic. Daryl has performed literally thousands of shows for audiences as diverse as the Witch Doctors on the South Pacific island of Vanuatu to the movers and shakers of the political world at the Presidential Ball in Washington, D.C.

6. March Linking Ring Features Italy's Alain Innone
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick, USA

The March 2017 issue of the I.B.M.'s monthly magazine The Linking Ring features Italian magician Alain Iannone on the cover, once again emphasizing "International" in the I.B.M. name. The six-page profile inside gives lots of information and photos to get to know Alain, and to appreciate his contributions to magic. Alain also brings us a special One-Man Parade, featuring seven of his special effects.

"The Rosenkranz Mysteries," is about a new magic production at the Royal George Theater in Chicago, a one-man show by Dr. Ricardo Rosenkranz. Author Simone Marron leads us through the development of the three-month production, gives us a review of it, and makes us want to experience the show when and if it is ever revived. Dr. Reza Saberi gives us a history lesson in his article, "The oldest magic book in the world." Prepare to be surprised.

In "Dinner with Houdini," Bertil Fredstrom reports how the University of Texas at Austin, commemorated the ninetieth anniversary of the death of Harry Houdini by holding a series of events in his honor over five weeks, beginning last October 1. One of the events was a cooking class featuring some of Houdini's favorite dishes. Bertil describes the class, and includes the recipe of his favorite, Hungarian Goulash.

Ring Events this month come from Ring 55 (Phoenix, Arizona), Ring 185 (Honolulu, Hawaii), Ring 211 (Grand Rapids, Michigan), and Ring 258 (Leesburg, Florida). There are nine new magic books, tricks and DVDs reviewed in this month's Hocus in Focus section. And there are eighteen obituaries in the Broken Wand. Annually The Linking Ring publishes a complete Index of everything which appeared in it during the previous year. This issue, seventeen pages are devoted to this index of 2016. There are fifty-eight Ring Reports this month.

Columns in The Linking Ring continue to bring us works of interest and inspiration. Kent Cummins tells us about "The Magic of Testimonials," in his Marketing Magic. Polishing The Rings is about "Hitting the Streets," from Skip Way. Bev Bergeron brings us "AIDA -- The Magic Word" in his Cutting Up Jackpots.

Mike Powers devotes his column, The Card Corner, to "Royal Monte," and gives an explanation of how he got there. In Simple Diversions, Andrew Woo bring us "Cello-Coins Production." And Michael Breggar devotes his Auto-Magic column to "Mixed Emojis."

The Linking Ring is available to I.B.M. members. For more information, go to www.magician.org.

As many of you know, we mourn the passing of Daryl. He was an amazing man with such great talent and a knack for making people smile and feel good even if he may have been hurting inside. Just because someone smiles, does not mean everything is OK in their lives.

I have depression and anxiety and my brother is bipolar. It is such a hurtful disease that often times makes no sense at all. You can smile and not even know why you are.

You can smile and be hurting so bad inside. It doesn't take much to cause "trigger points". Anything can set things into action without anyone else really fully understanding.

I just hope and pray that if anything, we can remember his memory and legacy for our art. We can also remember to treat others with love, respect and kindness.

Make a difference today. Lend an ear and help someone out. Talk to folks and hug your friends a little harder and more often.

R.I.P my friend. You will always be remembered. Thanks for always making me smile.

Kyle

--------------------------------------------
Message by Nopera Whitley (NZ)

There are less than 34 weeks until the NZ Magic Convention!

New Zealand is becoming a hot destination for travelling magicians and it's easy to see why. It's not just the epic landscapes that make New Zealand magic, and you read more about Magic in Middle-earth in an article in the upcoming VANISH Magazine (March 17).
If you've always wanted to come to New Zealand, there is no better reason to visit. With headliners like Shin Lim, Rob Zabrecky, Hector Mancha, Colin Cloud and Charlie Frye, there's no wonder that registrations are rolling in so fast.

With only 180 places available, and close to half of those are already taken, you'll want to register quickly or risk missing out.
Register online at www.magicconvention.co.nz - it only takes a couple minutes!

11. Broken Wand - Rex Williams "The Tipsy Trixster"
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Ross (New Zealand)

It is my sad duty to notify you and your readers of the passing on Saturday February 25 of Rex Williams "The Tipsy Trixster" aged 81 years.

Rex was at the time of his death Patron of the Canterbury Society of Magicians, Christchurch and had served the Club in every role and capacity during his 62 years of membership.

For many years Rex performed semi-professionally with a variety of routines but was best known for his wonderful act of the inebriated English gentleman.

A further story about Rex's life in Magic will follow.

Rex's funeral was held in the Lamb & Hayward Avon Park Chapel, corner Kerrs and Pages Roads, Linwood, Christchurch on Wednesday March 1 at 2 p.m.

Our sympathies go out to Rex's loving wife Loraine and his family.
