Dr. Magician: Med Student Uses Magic to Make Patients' Fear Disappear
by Parminder Deo, Kevin Tibbles and Jane Derenowski

Stony brook, New York - With a deck of cards and stethoscope in hand, David Elkin is not your typical third-year medical student. Along with medicine, he practices magic on his patients to make their anxiety and fear disappear.
"Magic is unique in that it allows you to suspend your disbelief and make you feel that the impossible is possible. So when I perform magic for patients at the hospital, I like to think that it provides them with a subconscious hope that they'll get through this", Elkin said.

Elkin, 27, started MagicAid and serves as the resident "doctor magician" at Stony Brook Children's Hospital, performing for kids and their families every week on the paediatrics floor.
Elkin has 11-year-old patient Delaney Unger under his spell. Unger is being treated for osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, and welcomes Dr. Magician whenever he is on the floor. Elkin teaches her magic and even gives her a trick to make her own.
Unger's father said he believes that the magic is in a way medicine. "Anything that makes her smile makes me smile," Noah Unger said. "There are good days and there are bad days, but when we're here having David come in helps a lot.
Elkin said his experience tells him that magic helps to boost social abilities along with a child's motor skills. Each patient is different, so Elkin customizes magic therapy for each one.
His bag of tricks is catching on and now almost 50 fellow medical students participate in MagicAid, all learning how to bring a little levity to their patients.
"It's helping me learn how to interact with patients of different ages", first year medical student Amanda Lang-Smith said. "It's also good to incorporate the parents so they're more comfortable with the situation and what the kids are going through."
"You can't really see what happens in magic, it's all an illusion, so kids feel like magic is medicine", Elkin said.

6. The Magic Word Podcast - Houdini-Opoly
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Houdini-Opoly with Dorothy Dietrich and Dick Brookz

For the past two year, Dorothy Dietrich and Dick Brookz (owners of the Houdini Museum in Scranton, PA) have been working on a unique board game for magicians called "Houdini-Opoly". They have recently started a Kickstarter campaign which, by the time this is published, will have probably reached full funding. But if they reach their "stretch goals", there will be several extra enhancements to the game that will make this a true collectible. In this podcast, Dorothy and Dick talk about the former Magic Townhouse in New York City, the Houdini museum, the Houdini séance and of course, "Houdini-Opoly". I have contributed to the campaign and bought two games, which seems to be the best deal since shipping is included, then I have one to either put up as a collectible or to give as a gift.

You can watch a video from the Kickstarter campaign that tells you more about the project, read the blog, see some photos, enter the new contest, listen to the podcast, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/341-houdini-opoly

This week's contest is a prize offered by a former guest, Danny Archer. On the website page you can enter for a chance to win an eBook of "Danny Archer Goes Mental" which contains for signature routines that are genuinely commercial magic for your stand-up shows.

7. The Art Of Simlicity - #431 - Kyle Peron

As an artist, I was always taught to look beyond the obvious and to really learn to "see" beyond what I think is there. I was also taught to see the beauty in the simplest of shapes and the simplicity of nature. It was a lesson I had always used in my art because it made sense.

However, I never realized that this notion of simplicity can be directly carried over to the magic that I do and perform for my audiences. Can simplicity be used to make me a better performer? Can it be used to create acts or routines that make better sense to an audience? This is what I would like to explore with you.

Often times we as magicians create acts and routines that are more for ourselves then they are for our audiences. We fall in love with the moves and complexity of things as that intrigues us. Part of being a magician is the love for the technical side of what we do. The ability to learn moves is fascinating for us. However, aren't these moves supposed to be invisible to the audience?

How many of you reading this have ever seen a performance of a card manipulation act that went on way too long? How many of you have seen a linking ring routine that seemed to last forever? Laugh if you want because it is funny. It is funny because we all know it to be true.

I think what happens is that we learn these moves and love the moves so figure we have to include every single one in the routine we create. Well time for a reality check. Just because you know how to vanish a card 50 different ways, does not mean your audience wants or needs to see all 50 ways. To a lay audience it means you vanished a card and produced the card and you are doing it over and over again.

In many cases, certain routines can be often too over done for a lay audience. We can often times overload them with so much that the audience simply shuts down from engaging with you. In this case, we need to learn that simplicity can be a good thing. It can often allow our routines to play even better than we had thought they would.

Now simplicity is a scary thing for most performers. The thought of not doing as much terrifies some people. We do so much in our acts because 1) we can, 2) we love it, and 3) it allows us to hide behind the moves. But remember there is beauty in simplicity.

Let me share with you an analogy that may make this point clear. A master craftsman has many tools. He owns a full shop of every tool ever created for wood working. He has studied them all and knows how to use every one of them. But this craftsman does not start a project thinking he has to use every single item in his shop. He simply knows just which ones to use to create a cabinet of beauty. The end result is a beautiful thing and it is created that way from him simplifying what he does. A magician needs to do the same thing.

Use just the right tools (moves and techniques) to create what you are looking for. Maybe certain segments do not need to be done in order for the effect to still work. Sometimes it is helpful to sit back and record your routine or act. Then objectively see what you can physically take out and still be able to tell the story you are trying to tell. Strip it down to its most basic format. When you do this you start to develop what I refer to as the "foundation" of the routine.

This foundation is simply the act or routine in its most basic format that still works, still plays and is understood by and audience. Once you get here, you will be amazed at how much you do not have to do to still convey things. Once you get this foundation, you can then start to build in a few things as you need to in order to develop a laugh or get a reaction. But everything is still always reviewed for simplicity.

Now do not mix up simplicity for boring. They are not the same thing at all. Simplicity can be a beautiful thing. It means that card act may not have to last 7 mins with every card move known to man. It means the ring routine does not have to utilize 8 rings and 3 minutes of ring combination patterns.

I have seen ring routines that are just so amazingly beautiful that are done with no more than 3 rings and performed in 3 minutes. It is not how much you do but what you do with what you have. Sometimes simplicity alone can allow the magician to concentrate more on the entertainment value of the act. It allows you to slow down and to give more to the audience.

So the next time you are developing a routine, take a step back from it and view it with an open and critical eye. Strip the routine down and ask yourself is there anything in the routine that complicates what I am trying to convey? Can I take anything away and by doing so, allow myself to give more to the audience? Is this simplicity actually making the effect even stronger?

I think when one starts to do this, they realize that simplicity itself can be a magic tool in our tool box. It can be used to great effect if we simply open our eyes to seeing and using it.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

The Midwest's Premier Magic Convention
May 19th, 20th, 21st, 2017
Des Moines, Iowa
www.AbraCORNdabra.com

This is one of the Magic Conventions Lance Burton recommends! He even talked about it while on stage at Magic LIVE in Las Vegas!

Registrations may be made via our website:
www.AbraCORNdabra.com

Registration for Spouse or Parent/Guardian is always $99.00

Young Magicians aged 20 or younger, may register for $100.
Young magicians may also perform in our exclusive "Kernels Young Magicians Showcase Show".

We do offer a special free registration to Magi aged 20 or younger!
We are the only Magic Convention in the World to offer this!
Young magicians actually perform magic to raise money to attend the convention!
We have two performance magic levels we offer everyone!
(No matter what age they may be, as long as they are 20 or younger)

* First completed level gets a young magician free registration.
* Second completed level gets a young magician a free hotel room, (with a registered ADULT Magician, parent, or guardian), AND a $50 free gift card to the World's FIRST & ONLY "magiK-MART" Spectacular Dealer's Room.
(Featuring "Blue Light Specials" throughout the convention!)

So what makes AbraCORNdabra the Midwest's premier Magic Convention?

This is NOT your average Magic Convention!

* Unique Shows, displays, events, lectures, and activities rarely (if ever) seen at other conventions.

* Registrations are limited to no more than 200 attendees. Once we sell the 200th registration - we are full - no registrations will be sold after that time!

* Due to the small amount of registrations offered - each and every attendee is treated as a V.I.P. - with plenty of one-on-one time with the magic stars!

* Free gifts, snacks, pizza & pop parties, etc are given throughout the convention, including the first ever S.A.M. & I.B.M. hosted parties side-by-side with both Presidents of those fine Magic Organizations hosting the parties themselves! (S.A.M. - Jeff Quinn & I.B.M. - Oscar Munoz)

* Featuring more than 10 of the top names in magic during this three day convention - you never know who you will see at the convention!

* Previous Magical Guest Stars include:
* Lance Burton
* Fielding West
* Jade
* Christopher Hart
* Johnny & Pam Thomson
* Banachek
* Joseph Gabriel
* John Carney
* Tom Mullica (R.I.P.)
* Oscar Munoz
* Losander
* Celeste Evans
* Alan Ackerman
* Michael Finney
* Stan Allen
* Mickey Silver
* Master Payne
* Murray Sawchuck
* Lupe Nielsen
* Christopher Carter
* Nick Lewin
* Stephen Bargatze
* Alex Ramon
* Xavier Mortimer
* Jay Scott Barry
* Michael Goudeau
* Chris Capehart
* Patrick Kun
* Wayne Houchin
* And the list goes on & on & on!
(And that's only our guests over the last six years!)

Who's coming to AbraCORNdabra 2017?
Well, we won't release the names yet - but our list of magical stars is huge!
We will let one name out for our friends here at the Magic New Zealand e-zine
Direct from FOOLING Penn & Teller on the smash-hit TV show - "Penn & Teller's FOOL US"...

"A rare gentleman and scoundrel who palms without palms, shuffles without fingers and is living proof that Nothing Is Impossible!"
The amazing close-up artistry of Mahdi Gilbert!

Mr. Gilbert will not only perform for our attendees in our intimate Sangrene Close-up Parlor (limited to no more than 40 attendees per performance!). He will also give an insightful lecture on showing Nothing Is Impossible! We are thrilled to have Mahdi Gilbert join us this year - along with AT LEAST nine other Great Magical Stars!

You Won't Believe Who Is Coming To The Midwest May 19 - 21, 2017!
