Another Magic Castle Is Opening Soon, and We're Trembling with Anticipation

The private club will be completed later this year.

by Chris Nichols

More than a half-century after it debuted in Hollywood, the Magic Castle is set to open a second location later this year near Santa Barbara called the Magic Castle Cabaret. Milt Larsen co-founded the original private membership club for magicians in 1963 and spent decades shaping the building into a labyrinth of dining rooms, theaters, and exhibition spaces, incorporating architectural castoffs from historic L.A. mansions. He now splits his time between Hollywood and Santa Barbara and wanted a club for his friends up north.

The new venue overlooks a lake and nature preserve in Montecito and formerly housed the Casa del Sol restaurant and events center. The structure is about a fifth the size of the Hollywood castle and will feature a 50-seat theater and a lounge.

"I'm gonna make it look like a castle with a lot of stained glass and woodwork," Larsen said. "It will strictly be devoted to close-up magic and variety arts. We might have an evening with [Disney legend] Richard Sherman or a comedian. It's a gorgeous little place with a lakefront view."

During the 1970s Larsen opened additional vintage-themed nightspots at the Variety Arts Center downtown and the Mayfair Music Hall in Santa Monica. Both have since closed, but the original Magic Castle endures. "The Academy of Magical Arts has over 5,000 members," Larsen said. "This year was the biggest and best year we've had in our 54 years." The Magic Castle Cabaret is expected to be open by Halloween.

4. David Blaine Shoots Himself in Mouth

Article forwarded on by Peter Rogers (US)

Fox 13

Magician David Blaine shoots himself in mouth as bullet trick goes wrong.

David Blaine, master magician and illusionist, shot himself in the mouth as he performed one of his scariest tricks: the bullet catch.

While preparing for his television show Beyond Magic, Blaine was attempting to catch a bullet in his mouth. He was fitted with a gum shield that went in his mouth. The shield held a metal cup - and that's what he would actually catch the bullet in.
But the clip that aired on the show shows that this trick went wrong - in a big way. The metal cup slipped out of the gum shield. When the bullet hit, the shield shattered.

He was taken to a hospital, where doctors found that he had a lacerated throat.

He still plans to do the trick on his upcoming tour though.

Message by Dennis Schick

Clive Moore, the current president of the British Ring, Ring 25, is on the cover of the January 2017 issue of The Linking Ring. It has been the tradition for many years to feature the largest member Ring of the International Brotherhood of Magicians in the first issue of the year. Ring 25 currently has over six hundred members. In addition, there are other British features in the January issue: (1) Members of the Ring contributed the sixteen effects in this month's Parade; (2) "A Tale of Two Spa Cities," by Roy Field; (3) "A Letter from London," by Dr. Dale Salwak; and (4) a report on the Eightieth Annual Ring 25 Convention.

Other feature stories in the January issue include: the touching story by Walter "Zaney" Blaney about how the late heart surgeon Dr. Denton Cooley saved the life of his daughter, Becky, when she was twelve years old; a report on the October Las Vegas Magic Luncheon (celebrating the event which launched Lance Burton's career); and a review (with breaking news) on the Fourth Annual "Hot Springs Festival of Magic."

Linking Ring columnists this month include: Bev Bergeron's Cutting Up Jackpots ("Magic joins the circus."); Magical Moments by Adele Friel Rhindress ("Marc DeSouza"); The Therapy Of Magic by Scott Hood (funny things overheard); Polishing The Rings, by Skip Way ("Light the Fire"); Marketing Magic by Kent Cummins ("The self-eating watermelon takes another bite!"); The Card Corner by Mike Powers ("Ahab's Goldfish"); Numismagic by Jean-Emmanuel Franzis ("John Bannon's Shangai Surprise"); Simple Diversions, by Andrew Woo ("A kiss is just a kiss"); Situationally Yours, by Chris Beason ("Paper View" by Mike Powers); and Auto-Magic, by Michael Breggar ("Force of Intuition," by Barry Hinnant).

Members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians receive The Linking Ring as part of their membership. The Linking Ring is available on the I.B.M. Website to view as a digital version, or to download.

6. The Magic Word Podcast - The Presidents' Messages
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

As we ease into the New Year and a new U.S. President soon to take office, I thought it would be interesting to hear from the Presidents of three of the world's largest magic organizations. So, on this week's podcast we talk with Jeff Sikora, President of the Society of American Magicians; Oscar Munoz, President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians; and Scott Penrose, President of The Magic Circle.

Each gentleman in turn talks about what they have done over the first part of their terms in office and some of the member benefits that have been introduced, then they follow-up with what they hope to accomplish in the coming year as part of their administrations. In particular, I enjoyed hearing Oscar's candid remarks about how he has been thwarted by the internal political machine that has hindered his effectiveness. I suspect that is the case with most organizations, regardless of whether they are magic related or not, but his frankness was refreshing.

You can hear these Presidents talk about all this and more on this week's podcast at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/338-the-presidents-messages-2017

Congratulations to Jeroen Wijs who won this week's contest prize, "The Human Pin Cusion Feat" and eBook by Devin Knight and offered by our sponsor, The Great American Magic Company.

We also welcome in the New Year with two new members of The Friends of The Magic Word: Jon Barr and Roger Gorss. Thank you gentlemen for your financial support and belief in this podcast. Your kind efforts help keep The Magic Word going for all the rest of the listeners around the world. And speaking of international listeners, membership in The Friends of The Magic Word is not limited to residents of the U.S. Since this is an internationally acclaimed podcast with thousands of listeners (and followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) from around the world, foreign donations are gladly accepted, too, and easy to make through Patreon and PayPal. Check it out at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/fotmw/

7. The Magic Word Podcast - Danny Archer: Smoke and Mirrors
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

In this week's podcast, Danny Archer talks about the development of his new venue for magic…"Smoke and Mirrors" located in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania) just outside of Philadelphia, PA. Danny talks about the many details that one must consider when building a theater and the permits and hurdles one must overcome. He and his business partner, Marty Martin, have a four pronged approach to this establishment: Show, Shop, School and Séance. All of this will be under the auspices of the new "Magical Arts Center". This sounds like it will be a magic jewel that will feature magic like no other theater in the U.S.

You can hear Danny talk about all this and more on this week's podcast at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/337-danny-archer

We also congratulate the winner of last week's contest for a "surprise" gift from The Great American Magic Company: Jon Barr. Be sure to visit the website to enter the contest this week for a chance to win an eBook from Devin Knight, "The Human Pin Cushion Feat". And also we welcome Gene Protas as a "Friend of The Magic Word" for his donation to the podcast. Thanks, Gene, for your support.

And finally, we have posted the "Magicians' Valhalla" listing on the website of some of those magician friends of ours who have passed during 2016. There are also links to those who have been heard on the podcast. Aloha, our friends.

11. Michael Giles Succumbs To Cancer
--------------------------------------------
Article from the Magic Compass
A service of the Society of American Magicians

Michael Giles was a magician, an illusionist, a creator and an entertainer. He was an artist. He was also a husband, a father, grandfather and a friend to many in the industry. In October 2016, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. He and his wife Melanie immediately began to battle the deadly disease but the cancer progressed faster than anticipated and this past week, after months of painful treatments, he made the difficult decision to stop treatments.

Doctors had done all that they could so Hospice Care took over. On Sunday, January 8th, his physical journey finally came to an end at 4:02pm (PST). He is survived by his wife, Melanie Giles, his son Tylor Giles and his grandson Zackary. Michael was 56.

The Magic Compass wrote about Michael and Melanie's fight against Pancreatic Cancer in November. That article shared information about efforts to help Michael and Melanie raise the needed funds to help offset Michael's medical expenses. Over $30,000 was raised of a $50,000 goal. Melanie is still going to have to pay the bills that were incurred. If you would like to help you can to go to Michael Giles' Magical Medical Fund Page.

https://www.gofundme.com/michael-giles-magical-medical-fund?ssid=800595509&pos=2

Michael got interested in magic when his father would entertain guests with simple "pocket magic" tricks including cups and balls. One evening young Michael snuck into his father's room, found the tricks and learned how to do them. That started his lifelong interest in the art of magic. By the time he was 12, Michael was already entertaining audiences. With a firm commitment to the art of magic, he trained endless hours perfecting his craft and creating memorable magical innovations. Soon he began entering and winning magic competitions with his dove act.

Michael was discovered by the world renown, Magic Castle in Hollywood, where his impressive performance at the historical venue launched his career and placed Michael at international performance and competition levels. He would also win awards including "Stage Magician of the Year" and "Best Magic Show".

His talents and achievements forged his career, made him a star and gave him the chance to perform to standing ovations in over 16 countries across 6 continents, first as half of The Majestix with Stacy Jones and later with his own show with his loving wife Melanie.

He has accrued accolades, awards, and worldwide recognition, earning the distinction of an impressive cover story in Magic Magazine and Vanish Magazine. Michael was also featured on the covers of Las Vegas' What's On, "Vegas" magazine, and dozens more.

Michael Giles earned a reputation that placed him in high demand among the magic world's major productions and venues. He starred in Dick Foster's award winning "Spellbound" in Reno, "Spellbound"- The World Tour, "Eclipse" in Lake Tahoe, "The Sand Castle" in Guam and consecutive headlining engagements at "Caesar's Palace" in Las Vegas. He also starred in the magic show Illusionarium on the cruise ship, Norwegian Getaway.

He starred on a multitude of global television shows including Disney's Magic and Beyond, and highlighting this merit with multiple appearances on NBC'S, "World's Greatest Magic". In recent years Michael and Melanie became regulars on Masters of Illusion television series on The CW Network. They also headlined the Masters Of Illusion live tour.

Michael Giles was not only an amazing performer but he was also a genius illusion designer and builder. His innovative concepts have inspired the magic world and magicians will perform his stage creations for years to come.

Michael presented a fusion of perplexing magic and spectacular illusions and then would present them in ways that were unique and exciting. The way his mind worked astounded his peers as he would combine ideas from different illusions to create something new and exciting.

With all these accolades, Michael Giles never developed an "attitude". He never became a "diva". His humility and grace are the very things that he will be remembered for the most. He always made time to meet other magicians and fans. He made people feel special, as if they were the most important people in the world.

Michael Giles has taken his last bow on this world's stage but his magic will live on through the lives of the people he touched and inspired.

14. Lyons Den - Magicana
--------------------------------------------
Message by James Alan

Jamy Ian Swiss continues his weekly column at Magicana, the Lyons Den. His column offers in-depth reviews and critiques of magic works across different media.

Recently posted include his review of The Jerx: Volume One:

"I like my art to be provocative, perhaps above all else-I'm not a fan of art that sustains the status quo-as well as insightful, thoughtful, beautiful, arresting, inspiring. All of these elements make appearances in the pages of The Jerx, Volume One, and add to that the fact that it's laugh-out-loud funny, and profoundly sophomoric, and offensive to the point of desperation, at least a few of my readers probably don't need to know anything more before rushing to order their own copy…"

And of The Aretalogy of Vanni Bossi:

"I was very fond of the man, Vanni Bossi, and of his magic, and I am extremely pleased that this book, many years in the works, has finally seen the light of print. There is material here that is well worth exploring and adapting for anyone looking for impactful close-up magic plots with deceptive methods that are often not too technically demanding. It should go without saying that, in the hands of Stephen Minch, the writing is simultaneously instructive and elegant, as is the design and production of the book, befitting not only its contents, but also the creator at its core."

15. Celebrity Magician Offers To Perform At Trump Inauguration
--------------------------------------------
Message by Wayne Alan

Celebrity magician Wayne Alan, America's only World Champion Illusionist, has offered to perform for President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. He thinks that the entertainers who are speaking out against performing at President-elect Trump's inaugural certainly have the right to do so, but they may wish to reconsider for two reasons. Number one, they should respect the office of the president. Number two, Mr. Trump will be the president of all American citizens, regardless of party affiliation or who they voted for. Everyone should hope and pray that his presidency does well. If he is not successful then all Americans are losers.

Mr. Alan has performed 13 ½ times at the White House for both Democrats and Republicans. He first appeared for President Ford, then President Carter and has since appeared there numerous times. He has also performed for many congressmen, governors and other politicians, from both parties.

Wayne Alan is America's only World Champion Illusionist, the only American to ever win the gold medal for grand illusion at the International Olympics of Magic. He has performed on national TV on Entertainment Tonight, MTV, Inside Edition, Good Morning America, ABC, NBC and CBS Network News programs. He's also appeared with Oprah Winfrey, Larry King and Maury Povich. He has acted as a consultant for the famous magicians David Copperfield and Criss Angel. Mr. Alan has performed 13 ½ times at the White House. He is the first magician to write a cookbook, titled Magical Meatless Meals-Famous Foods from Famous People and Places.

Mr. Alan is the owner, President and performer at the Historic North Theatre in Danville, VA. This 500 seat landmark theatre with a full balcony originally opened in 1947 and underwent a 3.5 million dollar restoration in 2005. He purchased the performing arts complex in 2012 which also includes a restaurant, gift shop, art gallery and celebrity bed & breakfast. Prior to purchasing the theatre Mr. Alan was a Corporate Illusionist for over 30 years representing Fortune 500 companies at meetings, conventions and trade shows around the world.
