Attend
a Combined I.B.M. - S.A.M. Convention! (July 12-15, 2017).
This may be the only combined convention for some time as

history making event.
Help us honor the two world famous Louisville magicians
- Lance Burton and Mac King - as we dedicate the 2017 Louisville
combined convention to these world renown stars of magic.
Go to www.ibmsam2017.com and save $100 by registering before
the rates go up on January 1. Reserve your room at the special
convention rate at the Galt House Hotel.

6. The Magic Word Podcast - Howard Hamburg - Voices From
The Past
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Having
recently passed his 77th birthday, Howard Hamburg has been
around the Magic Castle for a very long time. During those
many decades of sitting on the couch and entertaining guests,
he has befriended many of the greats and near greats. You
name them, and Howard has a story about them. From Dai Vernon,
Larry Jennings, Francis Carlyle and Jay Ose to Bruce Cervon,
Michael Skinner, Tom Mullica and Kuda Bux, Howard has some
amazing stories. In this week's podcast Howard starts off
by telling us about his recent trip to Spain for Juan Tamariz'
"Escorial Convention" then on to Belgium for his
lectures and performances. Then we get into the stories
of some of the "Knights of the Castle".
You
can watch a video of Howard performing, see some photos,
read the blog, get some links, enter the new contest, listen
online and download the MP3 files at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/335-howard-hamburg
This
week we welcome our new sponsor, The Great American Magic
Company, who just opened their cyber doors to a new online
shop last week. Eric Citron, owner of the store, will be
giving away free magic to one lucky listener each week.
This week's contest will be for a free two month subscription
to At The Table lectures from Murphy's Magic Supplies. You
can enter the contest on The Magic Word Podcast website.
Good luck!

If
you perform any shows for any clients in any market, chances
are you have come across this problem on more than one occasion.
You get to an event, set up your show and have everything
ready to go. Your show start time comes around and you let
your client know and they inform you that you need to wait
because the guests are not all there or they are not ready
yet. You then stand by your stuff looking at your watch
hoping your next show is not delayed because you are already
behind schedule.
I
thought I would share with you some ideas that I use myself
and have come across through discussions with fellow performers
on this very issue. I hope it may give some insight and
ideas or at least food for thought.
-
I always make sure to ask when the event will be starting
for the guests. This gives me a good idea for when people
"should" be there. I can then base my arrival
time and show time accordingly. I can also suggest what
would be a good time to have people arrive and what would
then be a good time for me to start.
-
I always schedule the show start time to be around 30 minutes
after the guests are supposed to all be there. However,
I always "ask" the client their schedule for the
event. This is important because I cannot assume that they
do not have anything lined up. It is best to find out firsthand
what their thoughts are for the schedule. Often times by
doing this, I get a chance to help them schedule things
out because in most cases they have not thought that far
ahead. In this way I am helping them solve problems and
in return helping myself ensure a good start time. It allows
me to be a solutions provider.
-
I always leave myself extra time to set up even though I
can set up in a much shorter time span. Usually this is
like 10-15 mins extra I add on. I do this when I can so
that I am not rushed. It also does 2 things for me 1) I
get a chance to mix and mingle with the guests to get to
know them before the show starts and 2) If I am done setting
up early (which I usually always am), I get the chance to
go on early.
-
When I am done setting up, I make it a point to inform the
client that I am properly set up and ready to begin and
can start if they would like me to. It is also important
to note that we should all be doing this. You cannot assume
that the client knows when you are done even if you think
it is plainly obvious. Make it a point to simply let them
know you are ready. In many cases I am allowed to go on
early which just makes things run better for everyone and
prevents me from having to stand around.
-
It is important to communicate effectively with the client.
Being a professional means being one all the time and does
not mean being one only when you hit the stage. Because
of this, I make it an effort to communicate with them from
the very first time we chat. I show interest in their event
and state my arrival time, the best idea for a start time
and how that can benefit them and how long the show will
run. I then make sure to follow this up in a contract or
confirmation letter that goes out to them.
-
I also do a confirmation call or email a few days prior
to the event. This is to make sure that if anything has
changed, I am informed of that change. It also gives me
the chance to state again the arrival times and start times
with them.
-
If I have another show I must get to that day, I also discuss
this with the client up front and let them know the importance
of me starting on time. That I can adjust my start time
earlier for them if need be but I must end at a certain
time and start at a certain time to ensure that every client
gets a full professional show and service. If you are honest
and up front with clients, they will understand.
-
Remember that YOU are the entertainment expert. In most
cases, you know way more than the client does in regards
to how a show and event can and should run. If you keep
that in mind, then you can always help your client and build
relationships with them simply by suggesting and helping
them with their scheduling. They will thank you for the
ideas and suggestions and will work with you on them. It
just takes the ability to listen to their needs and feeling
comfortable enough to suggest ideas to them.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

9. NZ Magic Convention 2017 - Five Reasons To Register In
2016
--------------------------------------------
Message by Nopera Whitley, New Zealand
There
is less than a year to go until the NZ Magic Convention,
and I'm sure that time is going to fly by. Here's five reasons
why you should get your registration sorted before the end
of the year.
1.
We'll plan a bigger event
The more people who register early, the sooner we can invest
it back into the convention - whether that is better tech,
better catering or another headliner. The more people who
register this year, the bigger our plans will be!
2.
Win a $300 Gift Voucher
Everyone who registers in 2016 will go in the draw to win
a $300 gift voucher to spend at Magic and More - NZ's Magic
Shop. We're expecting there to be less than 100 entries,
so your chances are high!
3.
You'll get better seating
We will be seating people based on when they registered.
Not only will you get better seats in the Saturday Gala
Show, but you will also get better seating at the Sunday
Banquet (tickets purchased separately).
4.
Cheaper Tickets to the Gala Show
If you wanted to upgrade your gala show seat, or purchase
extra tickets for your family and friends, tickets are MUCH
cheaper if you buy in 2016 (about 50% cheaper). Prices will
increase to full retail pricing on the 1st of Jan 2017.
5.
Places are Limited
There are only 180 registrations available at this convention
and places are filling up fast! Last year there were about
150 people at our convention, and there is certainly a lot
more interest this time around.
Always wanted to visit New Zealand? Now you have the perfect
reason!
Places
are strictly limited to 180 registrations. Avoid disappointment
and register before it's too late!
Registrations
are now open at www.magicconvention.co.nz
Find
out who else is headlining at www.magicconvention.co.nz/headliners/

11. Exploring The New Magic Manor In Phillip Island
--------------------------------------------
Message by Tim Ellis (Australia)
Yesterday
I spent the entire day exploring the new MAGIC MANOR in
Phillip Island, just 90 minutes' drive from Melbourne.
This
has to be one of THE BEST permanent magic attractions in
the world - and it's right here in Victoria, Australia.
Why
is it so good?
A
big reason is that the contributions from the late, great
Doug Tremlett are like nothing you've ever seen before.
The other is the dedication and commitment of the owner
Geoff Moed. His attention to detail is superb.
This
truly is a must-see for magic fans of all ages.
