1. Editor's Message
--------------------------------------------

We were overwhelmed with the messages of concern from readers about the recent two earthquakes in New Zealand and we are pleased to report no New Zealand magicians have been injured or had property damage to our knowledge.

The first highlight for Michele and I this week was watching Vinny Grosso in action at his lecture in Auckland (he also lectured successfully in Wellington). Seen on Penn and Teller's hit show Fool Us, Vinny has been viewed by millions of people around the world and, amongst the laughter, won the competition. Vinny believes in being absolutely different with his take on magic and has an awesome personality to match. Watch out for further lecture dates to be announced in the USA very soon.

Our second highlight for the week catching up with Chuck Jones from Los Angeles who is about to tour New Zealand with the lovely Mystina and new support act Hernando plus dancer Cazie. It was also great to catch up with Rosemary McCarthy, International Entertainment Ltd (New Zealand), our Magic New Zealand e-zine sponsor, who will be managing the tour.

2. David Blaine Hospitalised After Bullet Stunt Goes Wrong
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Peter Phillips

Eyewitness News

During a stunt, a bullet snapped the protective mouth guard Blain wore, which then hit him in the back of the throat.

Johannesburg - Master magician David Blaine who is well known for his death defying tricks is in hospital after accidentally shooting himself on camera.

The entertainer prepared a twist on his original stunt bullet catch, in which he catches a bullet in his mouth for his new ABC show Beyond Magic.

Things went pear shaped when the bullet snapped the protective mouth guard he had on in half and then hit him in the back of the throat resulting in an injury.

David suffered a cut to the throat and was taken to hospital.

He has told the channel which carries his show that he was sure the bullet went through his head but that despite the act going wrong he will attempt the trick during his live tour again.

"A Las Vegas magician who performs at children's birthday parties convinces the woman of his dreams to be his assistant, while the local Mob guys try to make him disappear permanently." Lance will be on hand for an interview after the showing. Tickets will be on sale to the general public but conventioneers see it FREE. If you are not as yet registered for the convention, there is still time to save $100 before the December 31 rate increase.

6. The Magic Word Podcast - Mike Pisciotta - Magic Castle
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (USA)

Among stiff competition, Mike Pisciotta won the 2016 award from the Academy of Magical Arts (The Magic Castle) for Close-Up Magician of the Year, and it was well-deserved. Some of you who haven't darkened the doors of the Magic Castle and journeyed to its dungeon bar, The Hat and the Hare Pub, may ask "who is Mike Pisciotta?" But for those of you in the know, you have seen his mad skills as the one who holds court four nights a week in the famed Magic Castle.

Among the various topics discussed in this podcast, Mike talks about his winning of the prestigious award, how he resurrected the bar magic in the Hat and Hare Pub from obscurity, his philosophy on structuring an act, working with drunk patrons, his creative process and more. In this podcast, we also review a couple items available from Murphy's Magic Supplies.

You can watch a video of Mike performing in the Hat and Hare Pub, see some photos, read the blog, listen online, and download the MP3 file at: https://www.themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/331-mike-pisciotta Of course you can listen to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Tunein, Feedpress and a multitude of other podcast catching sources.

We are also offering the 2017 Magic Calendar through the website. Please order yours today by clicking the link on the website and help support The Magic Word Podcast.

7. Take Nothing For Granted - #424 - Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

As many of you know I started losing my hearing at the age of 8 or 9. It got progressively worse as the years went on. I can't tell you how often I was picked on as a child, tormented or made fun of simply because I was "different." The countless hours by myself and the fear of being in the spotlight just to be made fun of again.

Magic was my escape from it all. When I performed I was suddenly just a kid again. I was not a kid with a handicap. In many ways magic was my "magic." Magic made me feel good about myself instead of feeling sorry for myself. Magic was my escape into a world which I had control over.

Just recently I received my first ever digital hearing aids. I cannot begin to tell you how this has changed my life. How "magical" the entire experience has become.

It is the simple sounds we take for granted that I enjoy the most. I actually stood outside a few weeks ago listening to rain. RAIN. lol I mean it's only rain but to me it was not only a sound I never heard, but was a symphony. I stood on the deck and just got lost in time. What a magical experience.

I felt like a kid at Christmas. Just standing there with a tear down my cheek. Imagine never having heard rain. Never knowing it even made noise before? Pretty amazing world we live in. NEVER take things for granted. We are all given so many gifts.

This past weekend, I saw a movie for the very first time with digital hearing aids. I never realized just how amazing sound can have on the impact and feeling of a movie. Sure I had heard the movies before, but never really understood a lot of it, missed parts of it and relied on lip reading for a great deal of it. What surprised me the most was just the sounds around me.

A kid whispered into his father's ear, "I love the Muppets. Thanks Daddy!". The sound of a hand going into a popcorn bag was majestic. Then the surround sound I finally could pick up for the first time. How startled I was when I heard noises behind my head and I understood them. I mean a movies visual appeal always intrigued me. But the emotional connection to the sound that goes with it....that was magical. Really magical.

I never ever knew that my own footsteps made noise. I heard a cricket for the very first time in 42 years of my life and I was held speechless. I sat on a bench the other day just listening to a leaf blowing across the concrete path and it was so magical to me.

It is as if someone pushed a button and suddenly the word has opened up to me to enjoy. I am experiencing sounds I have never heard in my life before. Every day has been an adventure of discovery and I am so eternally grateful.

As entertainers, we too often take so much for granted. We tend to forget that what we have is a gift. It is a gift that can make others smile, laugh and forget about their problems for a while. We have the power to make a difference in the life of another.

Too often we get hung up on feeling tired, worried about finances, frustrated with traffic etc. etc. So much of the time we spend not giving 100% effort to every show we do and 100% customer service to every client we perform for.

Being a magician is an honor and a privilege. Maybe my hearing has made me more tuned into being grateful for what I now have. All I know is every time that I go out there and perform, I smile knowing I am damn lucky to be doing what I do. I will never, ever take that for granted.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. December Digital Issue Of Genii Is Now Online

The December Digital Issue of Genii is Now Online and in the Mail
Richard Kaufman

The end of 2016 is nigh: The air has cleared, the dust has settled, and Genii is now once again the sole independent printed magic magazine in the United States, albeit with a spiffy 21st century digital twist.

Next month, John Bannon, one of the most popular creators of card magic today, begins a series on pasteboard wizardry with an accompanying video each month; Mike Caveney will bring his column from MAGIC magazine, "Classic Correspondence," to Genii and now alternate months with John Gaughan's "Chamber of Secrets"; ditto for Martin Lewis's "Making Magic, an excellent exploration of DIY conjuring from one of our most creator thinkers.

And there's more: through a deal with Stan Allen, Genii will be pleased to add many of MAGIC magazine's existing subscribers starting with our January issue, who will fill out their remaining issues in this, our happy home. We welcome them. For those who have always wanted a digital archive of MAGIC magazine similar to the now 79 volumes of Genii that are available to all of our subscribers online free of charge, sometime in the first quarter of 2017 we will bring you all 301 issues of MAGIC in digital form on our online archive.

This issue our cover is adorned by the remarkable Julie Eng. Lest. As the author of our piece, David Ben, aptly points out, not only is Julie a beloved figure and an accomplished magicienne, she also possesses the near superhuman ability to get almost anything that comes her way DONE. Yes, all caps for emphasis. She does much good work for kids, seniors, and behind-the-scenes good deeds for magicians that goes unheralded-but the word is now officially out.

Earlier this year The Metropolitan Museum of Art threw a bash with the title "The World in Play: Luxury Cards, 1430-1540," at the museum's uptown sanctuary, The Cloisters. Strolling magic was performed at the opening, with many of the earliest known playing cards on display. Carl Mercurio reports on the exhibit, accompanied by beautiful photos of the oldest playing cards you've probably ever seen.

Many excellent columns fill the pages this month, perhaps the most unique being a challenge between Jonathan Pendragon and Tom Stone over who could come up with the best (most original?) use for Tom Stone's Factory Blanks deck of cards. While the deck appears blank on both sides to anyone standing three or four feet away, a spectator standing up close can see the faces of the cards. Anywho, you get to vote on which trick is the best use of the cards on the Genii Forum. (And if you're a subscriber of the paper edition, you will receive a sample of the card from a Factory Blank deck).

Also present this month is "Magicana" from John Guastaferro, "Conjuring" from Jim Steinmeyer, "Hidden Treasures" from Bob Read, "The Chamber of Secrets" from John Gaughan, "You Are All Terrible" (he doesn't really mean it) from Harrison Greenbaum, and Eugene Burger, Jon Racherbaumer, and Helder Guimarães. Reviews are by Kainoa Harbottle (who really likes The Jerx Book, and I bet this is the only printed review you're going to read), Nathan Coe Marsh (who really likes Juan Tamariz), and Danny Orleans (who really likes pizza).

10. Jeremy Le Poidevin R.I.P.
--------------------------------------------
Message by Quentin Reynolds (UK)

Jeremy Le Poidevin took ill with a brain haemorrhage and passed away two days later on Sunday 13th November. His sudden passing at the age of 62 has shocked all who knew him.

Jeremy and his wife Cheryl took over Practical Magic twenty years ago and built it into the world's leading supplier of children's magic. He was always ready to help and advise, and many who are now professional entertainers acknowledge his help and encouragement.

As an organ donor, at least five people's lives have now been transformed and given a new lease of life, just as Jeremy helped transform others with his magic in his lifetime.

Ordering from the website and by phone is suspended for the moment.Trix in the Stix, the convention for children's entertainers run by Jeremy will still go ahead next May as planned.

The funeral service will be held at St Matthew's Church, Criftins, Shropshire SY12 9LN on Monday 28th November at 1pm, followed by the wake at a nearby venue. The cremation itself will take place earlier in the day and is for family only.

Cheryl and the family would like to thank all who have sent condolences and kind thoughts at this sad time. They are very much appreciated.

Legendary school of magic still going strong after seventy-five years by Robert W. Gibson

For much of its seventy-five years, the legendary Chavez Studio of Magic has been noted for its distinguished alumni, from historic maestros Neil Foster, Channing Pollock, and Norm Nielsen to contemporary stars Danny Cole, the late Tom Mullica, and Tim Wright. Now adding luster to the Chavez legend is an entirely new kind of client: The nation of China.
