6. The Magic Word Podcast - Rick Heath - Magician With A
Paintbrush
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (USA)
In
a place far away and a long time ago, there was a show called
"Le Grand David and his Magic Company". Integral
to that show was Rick Heath, the artist who painted the
backdrops and created the beautiful posters which many of
us enjoy still today.
On
this week's episode of The Magic Word Podcast, Rick talks
about how he met Cesareo Pelaez who was at the epicenter
of creating the Magic Show in Beverly, Massachusetts. He
talked about Cesareo's early life in Cuba and how he came
to move to the U.S. and the struggles he experienced and
his work with Maslow. He also talks about the history of
the theatre and how the show evolved. He also talks about
how some thought their "company" to be a cult
and how they worked together as a family. He also discussed
the sale of the props and costumes and the even the theatre
itself. This is one of my favorite podcasts with one of
my very dear friends who is one of the kindest, most generous
men I have ever met.
He
now words as a portrait artist doing special commission
work. This chat took place during the I.B.M. convention
in San Antonio earlier this year and is a follow-up to the
speech he gave for members of the Order of Merlin. That
30 minute speech was posted at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/302-day-four-2016-ibm-convention
You
can view a Facebook video we recorded while we doing this
podcast, see some photos, read the blog, listen online and
download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/329-rick-heath

7. Creativity In Magic: Outward Thinking - #422 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

So
many magicians and manipulators are caught in this realm
of inward thinking. By this I mean that whenever we seek
creative ideas for acts or routines, we immediately go to
our magic videos, DVDs, magazines or books and seek ideas
and suggestions.
Now
there is nothing wrong with being inspired or using these
inward sources for your magic. It can get your juices flowing.
The problem is relying too often on it as the ONLY source
for creativity. The problem with this inward thinking is
that it does not allow the magician to be as creative as
he or she could be.
With
inward thinking, we are funneling our mind and creativity
so much that we are not allowing our mind to open up to
new possibilities. What tends to happen is that we start
to copy things we see and like. We start to reuse ideas
that we recall from before. Sure you can create a fun and
entertaining act this way but are you really being as creative
as you could be? My answer is simple. NO!
I
like to be creative through a form of outward thinking.
Outward thinking is an approach I learned in art school
and in my job as a graphic designer and illustrator. I was
taught that creativity stems from creating something new
or different. It is to take common things and do them in
a different way. To be creative one must train the mind
to think outwardly.
By
this I mean think away from magic for your creative ideas.
Put the magic books, DVDs and videos away. You already know
all of that stuff and you already have and own more magic
then you will ever need. Look outward away from magic and
your creative juices can really start flowing.
A
creative thinker is one who allows him or herself to really
see. Now you may be saying to yourself, "Learn to see?
I see just fine." However what I am referring to is
REALLY learning to see. Let me explain.
As
a child we learn to see things in very specific ways. When
asked to draw a tree, we might draw a stick and then maybe
a round circle form on top of it. That becomes our representation
of a tree. Nothing is wrong with this. The problem lies
in that fact that the mind remembers these symbols or ideas.
So when asked in the future what a tree looks like, our
mind immediately goes back to what it remembers. It brings
back the symbols our brain has recalled early on.
The
idea of being creative is learning to really see that there
is more. It is about retraining the mind to look past what
we THINK we know. For example a tree is more then what our
mind wants to recall. When you really learn to see you realize
that each tree is different. Each has its own shape, texture
and color.
So
outward thinking is realizing that you need to see there
is more to magic then magic itself. Learn to look at other
sources for your creative inspiration. You can be amazed
at what ideas for manipulative acts can come from a simple
walk in the park. You can get an idea from listening to
music and allowing your mind to create visual imagery in
your mind. Culture and furniture and poetry all can spark
ideas if we only allow ourselves to look past the obvious.
Now
I am not going to lie to you. Being creative is hard work.
The reason is quite simple. It is something that has to
be practiced and used often to get good at it. But like
any good habit, you learn to get better at it through the
art of doing.
Force
yourself to not fall into bad habits. It is so easy to go
out and buy a trick that tells you the patter to use, how
to move and what to do. But is this being creative? Is it
allowing yourself to grow with your magic? No it is not.
It creates more magic clones of which we already have way
too many of.
Learn
to take a risk by thinking creatively. Yes I said risk because
being creative puts YOU in the spotlight. When you use another
routine you saw or a part of an act inspired by someone
else, then if it does not play well, it is so easy to blame
it on someone else's work. It was not you they did not like.
When you are creative then you are putting yourself out
there for your audiences to judge you. There is nothing
to hide behind. Like a good artist, your work is out there
and it should speak for itself.
Do
not be afraid of this. Sure you may fail at first but failure
to me is never failure when it comes to being creative.
Failure is only failure if you fail to learn. If you learn
even one thing, then failure is a stepping stone to success.
So take that risk, think outwardly with your magic. Allow
yourself to be creative and practice at it every day. Your
audiences deserve that of you and you will see the difference
it really makes.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

9. MINDvention 2017
--------------------------------------------
Message by Danny Archer
Mentalism
is extremely popular right now and many people wonder they
go to learn about this fascinating topic. MINDvention is
the only open mentalism convention in the US and the thirteenth
annual convention is coming up this November 13th - 15th
in Las Vegas, NV. The special guest of honor and recipient
of our Lifetime Achievement Award is Rick Maue.
For
one night only, Rick Maue is coming out of retirement to
present his show, "A Fine Li(n)e". As many folks
know, most of Rick's time is spent battling a series of
serious medical conditions. However, as a major part of
his ongoing therapy, Rick created this very unique play,
and he has been performing it in a very intimate parlor
setting in his own home.
"A
Fine Li(n)e" is a tasteful blend of autobiographical
monologue and mentalism. As Rick says, "The show is
certainly more Spalding Gray than Derren Brown...but both
art forms are treated with great respect and presented with
pride." This will be your only opportunity to see Rick
perform "A Fine Li(n)e"...unless you visit him
at his home in Pittsburgh. So make your plans now to see
his show in Las Vegas at MINDvention.
This
year, in addition to the lectures on effects and techniques
by performers; John Archer, Ted Karmilovich & Menny
Lindenfeld (plus more to be announced) we will be focusing
on the business and performing sides of mentalism.
Jamie
Salinas and Robert Allen -The Business Side of The Seance
Business.
Mindpro - Business Techniques for Mentalists
Bill Gladwell - Finding and Booking Your Show into Theaters
Willam Rader - Promoting your show and how to sell tickets
Joshua Lozoff -Theatrical Techniques for Mentalists
David Gerard - Performance of Mentalism
Plus more presenters to be announced.
There
will also be a show each night and two workshops being offered
the day after the convention.
Bob
Cassidy will be holding court in Jack's Irish Pub there
is a great dealer's room with all the latest props and effects,
and I can promise you three full days of mentalism and business
and performance techniques for mentalists. More info on
