3. The Masters Of Illusion Return For 'It's Magic'
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Mel Kientz (US)

The masters of illusion return for 'It's Magic'

For 60 years, "It's Magic!" has been a highly anticipated annual tradition, entertaining crowds at numerous venues. On Saturday, Oct. 29 from 8 to 10 p.m., the production will return to the location where it started - The Wilshire Ebell Theatre.

Los Angeles -The show is unique in that it features top professional magicians from all over the world, with each act selected to represent the variety of the arts of magic. The audience will see internationally recognized and award-winning magicians from Las Vegas and Hollywood's Magic Castle perform sleight of hand, full stage illusions and comedy.

The 2016 lineup includes Jonathan Pendragon, Goldfinger & Dove, Dimmare, Justin Wilman, David & Damia, Jeff McBride, Darren Romeo and Tony award-winner Jay Johnson. "It's Magic" was created by Milt Larsen, founder of the Magic Castle.

The tradition of an all-star magic show started in 1956 when two young entrepreneurs, Milt Larsen and Oliver Berliner, produced a show called Hocus Pocus' 56 at the magnificent (now demolished) Carthay Circle Theater in West Los Angeles. The following year, the show was renamed It's Magic! and moved to the 1300 seat Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles' swank Hancock Park area.

At first, the shows played for a very limited time only. However, as the number of fans grew, the number of performances was expanded. The success of It's Magic! proved there was a genuine interest in the ancient art form of magic. This, in turn, gave Larsen the idea of forming a full-time private club for magicians and magic enthusiasts. Thus was born the Magic Castle, which opened its doors in 1963. Many credit this show as the spark that rekindled the resurgence of the art of magic in America.

Tickets start at $30. The Ebell box office is located at 4401 W. Eighth St. For information, call (818)377-2101, or visit www.itsmagicshow.com/backstage.html.

4. November Issue Of Genii
--------------------------------------------
Message by Richard Kaufman, Editor

The November Issue of Genii is Now Live Online and in the Mail

In exactly a year the greatest magicians in the world will gather in Orlando, Florida for Genii's third convention on October 4, 5, 6, 7 with workshops on the 8th. We'll have over 20 artists performing and lecturing. More magic than you can imagine! Register today at a price $100 lower than that of MAGIC Live, at www.geniiconvention.com. And now to our latest issue.

Education in the field of magic used to occur mostly through socializing at the local magic shop, socializing at the local magic club meetings, or in private lessons. Most magic shops are gone and most magic club meetings have far fewer members than they used to. Last month we featured the Magic and Mystery School, which is located in Las Vegas and run by Jeff McBride and cohorts. It will give you a good education as a performer, but it's not accredited as a university.

In Sweden, Johan Stahl and Tom Stone are running a magic university as part of an already-existing college program for which you receive academic credit, and there's no charge for any students who come from a country within the European Union. Dr. Will Houstoun, editor of The Magic Circular's monthly magazine, took a trip to Sweden just to tell us all about it. There are sidebars from both Tom Stone and Matt Field, and three tricks which some dope (ahem) titled "Sweets from the Swedes" written exclusively for Genii by Andi Gladwin. "Sweets from the Swedes" … it's almost as good as Sankey Panky!

I've written my annual article about Tenyo's eight new releases (double the number they've put out in recent years): four "regular" tricks-all very effective, and So Sato's "Magic Maze" will bamboozle you good-and four tricks in the new "Super Mentalism" line. All eight will make a fine addition to your collection and are fun to perform.

Then, Dustin Stinett takes us to "The Magic Play," a new theatrical piece presented at the famous The Goodman Theater in Chicago. Actor/magician Brett Schneider warmed up for the play by working at The Magic Castle for a week earlier this year. If you're near Chicago in the next few weeks, try to get tickets! The play will come to Maryland next year.

We have some great new things starting in January. Best-selling author John Bannon will join us with a new column on card magic, Mike Caveney will bring his column "Classic Correspondence" to Genii, as will Martin Lewis with his column "Making Magic." These were among the most popular columns in MAGIC magazine and I'm very pleased to bring them to you in Genii starting in a few months.

This month, right here in these very pages, we have some terrific columns: Todd Karr tells all in "The Eye," John Gaughan explains yet another Rube Goldbergian any-card-named Card Rise in "Chamber of Secrets," David Kaye teaches you about The Verbal Challenge in "The Expert at the Kids' Table," Kainoa Harbottle almost publishes a trick in "By Means of Metal," Jeff Prace most definitely publishes a leaden trick in "Left-Handed," the recently betrothed Daniel Ulin manages to squeak in yet another "Knights at The Magic Castle" before going on his honeymoon, and John Guastaferro begins what I hope will be a long stint as editor of "Magicana" with three terrific tricks for his debut. In Light from the Lamp, Tom Frame joins our staff this month reviewing books in rotation with John Lovick, Kainoa Harbottle, and David Britland. Joe M. Turner does the videos this month, David Oliver the tricks, and that's another issue out the door.

6. The Magic Word Podcast - Halloween Podcast - Wilde, Man, Wilde
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells M.I.M.C. with Gold Star (USA)

As a special Halloween podcast, we visit with a "bizarre magic" magician, Lawyer B. Douglas. There are many bizarre magicians in the world, but Lawyer is one you have never heard of or would have never heard from if not for The Magic Word. For you see, Lawyer is a "closet" bizarre magician. Even his employees don't know about his secret interest. But what makes him the topic of this week's podcast is that his story is…uh, bizarre.

Lawyer (yes, that's his real name) is the owner and artist-in-residence of "The Wilde Collection", a rather unique boutique in The Heights, a suburb near downtown Houston, Texas, that is listed as one of the top ten places to visit on Halloween. It is more than just an art gallery featuring artwork from his nightmares, but also a museum with many pieces (including large, wild animal taxidermy) that are not for sale. He also has items on consignment from other artists and collectors of the macabre, occult, medical quackery, weird and unusual.

But his background story is fascinating, too. His mother is Mexican and he was brought up in the Catholic faith though his mother is a "curandero" (look it up) and his father is an African American who is from a long line of voodoo priestesses. This made for quite a childhood that led to what he has become today and what he creates. Believe me, it is quite a story.

You can watch a video I made of the store, see some photos of the store, read the blog, listen to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/328-wilde-man-wilde Of course, the podcasts are also available on iTunes, Stitcher, Feedpress and Tunein as well as many other podcast platforms.

Congratulations goes out this week to the winner of "Cool Cash by John T. Sheets" by Kozmo Magic: Tim Rappel. Thanks to everyone who entered. BTW, thanks also goes to Yigal Mesika who supplied The Magic Word with enough Loops to give out to all the Friends of The Magic Word. It is just another "perk" for those who financially support the podcast. You can join, too, and your support would be greatly appreciated. In fact, if you join within the next week, I will send you a set of Loops with any donation. Visit http://scott-wells-kdb1.squarespace.com/fotmw/ for more information on how you can become a Friend of The Magic Word.

7. Empowering Your Helpers - #421 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)

Ever perform a show and when it's that time to find a volunteer it almost seems like your audience goes into terror mode? The audience starts to slump in their chairs, look the other way or raise someone else's hand instead of their own. They do anything they can to make sure it is not them who get selected to come up and help.

I feel there is a simple reason behind why this happens. Many people just hate being picked by a magician. Why is this? Why are people afraid to help a magician. I do not feel it is so much the fact that they are brought into the limelight as it is this fear that they are going to be made to look like a fool on stage in front of everyone. Perhaps this fear of embarrassment prevents them from wanting to assist us.

How can we change this perception that what we do is embarrass the people we bring up on stage? How we can empower our helpers instead of always causing the laughs to be pointed at the person we select to assist?

The first step is always remembering that every person that you bring up to help you should be treated like a guest in your own home. Treat and show them the same respect you would want to receive from them. If you remember this simple idea, you can be sure to change your mannerisms in regards to how you talk and greet and react with them on stage.

Second, understand that they are nervous to begin with. They are not used to being in front of everyone or in the limelight and they may have friends or family watching them. This nervous feeling is normal for them. Whereas we are comfortable on stage, they are not. Be aware of this and tune into it. You can learn to relax the person by giving them a round of applause as they come up, shaking their hand when they get there and thanking them periodically throughout the routine. You can also whisper something to them at times during the routine if you need to. This just something that is heard between you the performer and your helper that can show your appreciation.

Third, realize that it is ok to get laughs from your helpers but make sure they realize if you do so, that you are teasing and you appreciate their help and being a good sport. It is important that they trust you and understand you first and the laughs you are getting are not always pointed and aimed directly at the person or child.

Fourth, do not fall victim of forgetting that your helper is human just like you are. They share the same emotions and breathe the same air. We as magicians tend to forget that the person we have helping us is even there at all. We have done the effect so many times that the person stops being a person and becomes a prop that we manipulate like other props on the stage.

Fifth, your audience is everything. Without an audience, a magician is an awfully lonely person. Remember that you are not there performing for yourself. You have to enjoy what you do, but the real reason you are there is to entertain the audience that has come to watch your performance. They want to have fun and a good time. You can make that happen for them.

And lastly, you do not always have to get the laugh by embarrassing the helper. You can just as easily get a great laugh or reaction from an audience by turning the sucker trick on yourself. Instead of the wand breaking in the child's hand, it works fine for him but does not work for you. They seem to be able to restore the paper napkin where as yours falls apart in pieces.

By doing so you still get the laugh, but you are making the helper feel good and feel important. In a sense you start to empower the helper. This not only benefits them but will benefit you as well. Your shows will run smoother and you send a positive message to the entire audience and your client. You also will see that your audience is more willing to want to come up and assist instead of dreading to raise their hands.

We must also realize that as magicians, many of the audience members we perform for are seeing a live magician for the very first time. We are the ones setting the example for how they may view magic and magicians in general. If this is the case, then we should be conscious of this and work towards giving those audience members a positive feeling towards the entire magical experience.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

8. Put Yourself Into Your Magic - #420 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

Put yourself into your magic? Sounds like a pretty silly question right? I mean you have to be the one who initiates the magic so you would always be in it. However I am referring to something entirely different. I am not so much talking about the performer as I am the performance. Allow me to explain.

A magician creates a magical experience that the audience then takes in. However, too may magicians these days go about creating magic with blinders on? They seem to only see one way of thinking. This tends to lead them down only one path and that path usually ends up with a routine or presentation that seems commonplace or even redundant.

In many ways this way of thinking creates what I refer to as "magic clones". It is the creation or recreation of what has already been done before countless times. I am not so much saying magicians20do this on purpose. I think many start off with good intentions but follow the wrong paths to get to where they want to go.

If you are looking at magic for your ideas, then I feel you are going about things the wrong way. Looking at magic for magic is a style of "inward thinking". Now there is nothing wrong with being inspired by magic. However, notice I said inspired rather than imitated. Creativity is the lack of imitation. The problem is too many magicians dive so deeply into magic for ideas that they cannot help but to end up with a routine that is nothing new.

Sure it may be a different sequence or a different patter but in essence it is just the rearranging of the components that have always been there before. It may be good, but does it give the audience something new? Does it raise the level of creative thinking in our art?

I feel many folks forget about a way of thinking that can break down those blinders we all seem to wear. It strips us from one way of thinking and allows us to explore not one path, but many paths of thinking. Who says a routine has to be done a certain way and only that way? To any one problem there may be multiple solutions. That is the beauty of creative thinking. This new way of thinking can be described as "outward thinking."

Outward thinking is the notion of allowing yourself to be inspired by things other than magic itself. Instead of always diving into our magic books and DVDs and YouTube videos, we go an opposite direction. We force ourselves to put away the magic related items and allow ourselves to be open to other areas of influence. When we start to do this, the magic we create can be amazingly fresh, creative and new.

So putting yourself into your magic starts to suddenly make a bit more sense. What it means is to allow yourself to place other interests besides magic into what you perform. Every single one of us has interests outside of magic. At least I hope you all do. It is these other passions you may have that can be added to your magic to make it as unique as you are.

For myself, I am an artist and was an artist long before I got into magic. It took me a while to realize that my passion for art could be added into the magic I present. When I realized this, suddenly my routines became more fresh, interesting and new. I suddenly had new themes I could explore and it allowed me to add levels or "layers" to which the audience can enjoy.

There are many magicians who have understood this notion of placing their own outside interests into their magic. Some are quite obvious. Jeff McBride is a perfect example. He is an amazing performer not just for his skill, but also because what he does on stage is so unique, fresh and so a part of who he is. Watch any routine and you can see elements of mime, martial arts, Kubuki theater etc. These he has added to what he does and by doing so has opened him up to being very unique and different.

So I ask you to look inside of yourself and add those other passions to what you do in magic. When you start to do this, you will see a world of creative thought opening up for you. Give it a try. You may just like what you see.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

13. David Copperfield Highest Paid Magician In The World
--------------------------------------------
Article sent by Peter Blake (UK)

Independent

David Copperfield is the highest paid magician in the world according to the Forbes list, he earns virtually the same amount as the highest-paid actor in the world Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.

While most people give up on magic tricks when they hit puberty, the fortunate few who persevere can wind up on a lucrative career path.

To put this into context, the highest paid magician, David Copperfield, earned far more in the last year than the highest paid TV actress, Sofia Vergara, and virtually the same amount as the highest-paid actor in the world Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson according to Forbes.

While Copperfield, a famed American illusionist, made an estimated $64m (£52m) in 2016, Johnson earned $64.5m (£53m) and Modern Family actress Vergara earned $43m (£35m) in the same period.

Copperfield, who has walked through the Great Wall of China, made the Statue of Liberty disappear and levitated over the Grand Canyon, is a near-billionaire. Forbes estimated his net worth at $800m (£654m) in 2013 and estimates him to be the most commercially successful magician in history.

The 60-year-old performed 638 shows at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino during the year and made millions from corporate gigs.

Penn & Teller, an American double act who are known for combining comedy and magic that have performed together since the late 1970s, are the second highest paid magicians on the list and earned $31.5 million (£26m) - roughly half of what Copperfield made in 2016.
Criss Angel and Dynamo followed behind with $19m (£16m) and $18m (£15m).

Dynamo and Derren Brown are the only English magicians on the list. While Dynamo, best known for the TV show Dynamo: Magician Impossible, came fourth place, Brown, known for television debut Derren Brown: Mind Control, earned $8m (£7m)………

15. Access To A Secret Workshop
------------------------------------------
Message by John Kaplan (Canada)

In a second I'll give you access to a secret workshop that'll literally turn your life around.

Click here for more info: http://itfactorlive.com/deal/

But before you claim that, I wanted to share something with you ...

What if you could control how you experience life?

I mean ... what if, instead of being a victim of circumstances beyond your control, you could
instantly transform your life so that you had confidence, clarity and peace of mind.

I'm not talking about fake-it-till-you-make-it type nonsense

I mean real - lasting change - in your business and your life!

The fact is there is a simple principle of human performance that, once you learn it, you can use to fast-track your life and results.

Take a moment and consider these two questions...

What if you ran your life the way the greatest and most successful CEOs in the world run their companies?

Do you think you'd be more successful, more accountable and much more focused on getting results?

Sound like a crazy idea?

Well, it shouldn't. Click here for more info:
http://itfactorlive.com/deal/

Imagine for a moment that your whole life is a business.

Your goal should be to get the highest return possible on the investment of yourself in everything you do.

In other words, your time and your energy - mental, emotional, and physical energy - are investments.

Your time and energy are your personal equity.

A business wants to maximize how it invests its equity, because in business, everyone knows and understands that equity is limited.

We have only so much.

Isn't the same true of your personal time and energy?

So it makes sense then, that you need to strategically plan how your investments are being made, so that you can maximize them to get what you want.

That is why when I previewed this powerful hands on workshop, I immediately wanted to tell you all about it too, because this IS the answer to turning your year around.

I know it sounds unbelievable, but I'm not asking you to believe me ... click the link below and learn more.
http://itfactorlive.com/deal/

A friend of mine has put together an easy-to-follow system that walks you through the entire process of designing your ideal life.

It's a whole different way of going after what you want with one big difference...it works!

And, for a limited-time, you can snag one of the few remaining seats available to this life changing event. So grab it while you can.
