Message by Paul Romhany
Editor - Vanish Magic Magazine

Hi everybody
I have been extremely busy over the past six months working with several different teams who are each helping me take Vanish to a new level in the magic magazine world.

Over the next few months I'll be sharing all the amazing news with you. Here is the first great piece of news for readers of Vanish ...

Vanish Magic Magazine will be coming out monthly starting January 2017 and it will remain free per edition for that month. The magazine will be smaller and all videos will be embedded so you can watch them off-line. The on-demand printed version will also be cheaper for those that still want a printed monthly magazine.

You can still get the current copy of Vanish Magic Magazine free from our website at www.vanishmagazine.com

The Magicians' Podcast

Informal interviews with the biggest names in magic
By Richard Young

http://magicianspodcast.podbean.com/

Ep 71 - Stuart MacLeod (Barry & Stuart)

Sep 2nd, 2016 by magicianspodcast at 5:00 am
Stuart MacLeod is one half of the double act Barry & Stuart. I would recommend you listen to Barry's episode first (episode 70) before you listen to this one as it follows on perfectly. In this interview Stuart discusses their influences, why commercial success was never their plan, why they decided to expose all of the secrets to the tricks in one of their Edinburgh shows, his solo projects including the soon to open Band of Magicians show on the Las Vegas strip. Stuart also explains how they are able to continue as a double act today despite the fact that they live on different continents.

Ep 70 - Barry Jones (Barry & Stuart)

Sep 2nd, 2016 by magicianspodcast at 2:05 am
Barry Jones is half of the double act Barry & Stuart, they are without question two of the most creative and innovative magicians in the world today and over the last 15 years they have produced an incredible body of original work. In this interview Barry discusses their journey from rural Scotland to the bright lights of London where they made their own TV series for Channel 4 in their early twenties called Magick, he also talks about their time as featured performers on the BBC1 show 'The Magicians' including the night The Slicer illusion they were performing went wrong on Live TV. I also ask Barry about their Live shows, their upcoming appearance on ITV1's 'The Next Great Magician' featuring the incredible 'Barry's Belly' trick and how he and Stuart have kept their double act going strong despite Stuart moving to America.

Ep 69 - Harry De Cruz

Aug 26th, 2016 by magicianspodcast at 3:10 am
It is always great to hear an enthusiastic young magician talk about the magic world and how they view its past, present and future. This week Harry De Cruz takes to my hot seat, he is the youngest magician to ever do so. Harry is only 22 however for the last 4 years he has worked in the very heart of team DYNAMO and has been at Steven Frayne's side throughout the TV shows, national arena tours and publicity stunts, Harry has also recently been working alongside Paul Kieve and has some big plans for his own performing future. This episode also features the first ever pair of magicians to gate crash a podcast recording, Alan Hudson and Tom Elderfield add in their 2 cents.

Ep 68 - Debbie McGee

Aug 19th, 2016 by magicianspodcast at 12:31 am
The lovely Debbie McGee takes to my hot seat this week to discuss her incredible life and career as both a ballet dancer and also as one half of the most famous magic double act in the UK over the last 30 years. Debbie talks about her marriage to Paul Daniels, the TV shows, the West End run, the live shows, the Louis Theroux and 'Wife Swap' documentaries, as well as sitting on Mrs Merton's sofa when she asked that very famous question. Debbie also talks about her future plans and your host points out an amazing potential new avenue that Debbie could go down in the world of magic at the end of the interview.

5. September Linking Ring Tells Of Banned Trick
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick, U.S.A.

Whenever anyone mentions something has been banned, it always gets extra attention. So it is not surprising if you are especially interested in the cover story in the September issue of The Linking Ring, the I.B.M. monthly magazine. It opens with the only magic trick to ever get banned at the Magic Castle. The story is a profile of Ron Saylor, and begins with his illusion which went wrong - "Smash 'n' Stab". Read the full story to see what happened.

The 2016 I.B.M. Annual Convention in San Antonio over the Fourth of July Weekend, was so large that coverage of it has been spread over several issues. It began in the August issue and continues in September, with features (including lots of photos), about the Order of Merlin Breakfast, photos of the recipients of the four levels of Merlin Awards, reviews of all the lectures, and an article about the convention opening session, a special lifetime tribute to Johnny and Pam Thompson.

New I.B.M. President Oscar Munoz uses his first column to tell us about his whirlwind first month or so in office, visiting several conventions and Ring meetings. Dale Salwak got to meet Dick Van Dyke at The Magic Castle, and writes about that exciting opportunity.

The Linking Ring has some of the best columnists anywhere, and month after month they come up with thoughtful, interesting and useful material. Here they are with their columns this month: Old pro Bev Bergeron discusses "Patter Parade" in his "Cutting Up Jackpots;" in Marketing Magic, Kent Cummins gives us his "Marketing Magic Checklist," a valuable tool for every magician; Scott Hood continues his discussion of "Therapeutic Magic," in The Therapy Of Magic; Skip Way continues urging us to do a better job of encouraging aspiring magicians in Polishing The Rings, with "Finding the Unity in Community;" and Mike Powers turns his The Card Corner over to Greg Chapman, who brings us another "ACAAN."

In his Numismagic column, Jean-Emmanuel Franzis allows Eric Roumestan of France to describe "Deceptive Reality;" Simple Diversions by Andrew Woo is entitled "Photo Redone" this month; Chris Beason brings us "Refund" in his column, Situationally Yours; and in his Auto-Magic column, Michael Breggar gives us "Drawn Conclusion." Great job, one and all.

The always-popular Hocus Pocus Parade this month is brought by John S. Roberts, from Virginia. He brings us ten of his original effects. In addition, there is a Parade Bonus -- "Ram's Impossible Teleportation," created by Ramiro A. Rivas. And there is another bonus this month, a Magic Crossword Puzzle by Dr. Steven Schlanger.

Those are some of the highlights of the September issue of The Linking Ring, available now to all 12,000 I.B.M. members at its Website. For more information about I.B.M. membership, go to the I.B.M. Website, www.magician.org.

Ever wonder why you have to work so hard sometimes to get folks to see you differently and to appreciate what you do? Ever see a person with their hands crossed over with this look of "fool me magic guy." on their face? It's as you have to prove something to them before you have even done anything. You never met this person yet they give off this defiant attitude. Why is it that we have to constantly work towards changing perceptions?

Part of the reason may be the sheer fact that most lay people view us magicians as being all the same. As sad as that may be, that is the case. Ask most people to be honest and describe a magician and you may get something like this: "Oh a guy who dresses like a clown, looks weird, embarrasses people for laughs and pulls quarters out of people's ears. They are great for kid's birthday parties. Oh yeah, my uncle does magic."

You may be laughing right now, but that is basically how lay people perceive us. They feel we are all one and the same. Now why do they have this perception? Well because in reality, there are a LOT of bad magicians out there who are: 1) doing magic when they are not ready to do it and 2) those not willing to ever learn or to ever listen instead of stroking their own egos. Give anyone a deck of cards and teach them a card trick and the next week they are doing paid gigs. It is really a joke, but that is how things are.

So how do we change this and why does this happen in the magical arts? Well a lot of it stems from magicians simply kissing each others butts so much instead of being dead honest with each other. This may be harsh, but I have seen it time and again.

How many times have you seen a really bad show or a bad act yet you saw magicians going up to them saying, "Oh wow that was great. Nice job. Way to go."? Why do we do this!? Do we do it to be kind or because they are friends or because we are trying to show respect?

If you ask me, this is all a total joke. No wonder a person never learns or educates themselves if all they ever hear is people patting them on the back for doing a lousy job. If you are a friend and if you respect a fellow magician, then it should be a golden rule to be honest. Wow now there is a concept many fear. What is so wrong with honesty and why can't magicians be honest with each other?

I am not saying you shred a person or scream at them about how bad they were. That is not my point. My point is a simple one. Be honest to yourself. Be honest to the fellow performer and be honest to the ART! If you see something that can be improved, then simply be honest with them and offer them constructive feedback that can help them.

You can do this by showing respect to the performer but also not having to lie to them every chance you get. If the performer wants to elevate the art, they need to be able to take help when it is given to them. If you address the feedback in an honorable and friendly fashion, there is no reason why the performer can't listen to your suggestions. It makes them better and elevates the art.

Now if you are on the receiving end, for god sake stop thinking everyone is out there to attack you. Stop putting up the fists every time someone offers you a suggestion. If you want to be a professional, you must first act like one. Stop talking for once and listen instead. Maybe what the person has to offer can be a tip that would take you years to learn on your own. Not everything everyone tells you is a piece of junk.

If we are to elevate our art to a higher level, then we have GOT to start helping each other and listening to each other. We are a brotherhood and there is no reason at all why more of us can't offer assistance so we all grow and learn. So stop giving IN to lying to people just to make them feel good and start giving OUT feedback and help and friendly advice that can help someone else through your knowledge.

We are magicians and we have this amazing ability to make people laugh and smile. I am not sure about you, but I would love for people to feel the passion for magic the way I feel the passion and to respect our art the way I do myself. We do this first by helping each other.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

9. Hollywood's Magic Castle: The Hardest Trick Is Getting In
--------------------------------------------

Hollywood's Magic Castle: The hardest trick is getting in

By Jordan Rane, for CNN

When's the last time you enjoyed a night of astounding magic and illusion with a festive supper-club crowd gathered in an old Gothic mansion on the edge of Hollywood?
Chances are it's been a while.

Perhaps this mystical experience still awaits you -- at the Academy of Magical Arts and its private clubhouse the Magic Castle.

L.A.'s iconic, castle-ish landmark (built by a local banker in 1909) at the foot of the Hollywood Hills has for the last 53 years been the hallowed headquarters of the AMA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the art of magic.

Magic fortress
A who's who of eminent magicians and illusionists have performed at this curious-looking fortress over the years, which pulls in big names -- Mac King, Michael Carbonaro, The Amazing Johnathan -- that still might escape you.

Penn & Teller, David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy -- whose smiling photos hang on the walls -- may not have played here, but they're all proud AMA members.

So was Johnny Carson, a big magic fan, who frequented the Magic Castle -- and, as the story goes, was once stopped at the door for not arriving in the club's famously enforced formal evening dress code.

Johnny Depp apparently digs the Magic Castle, as does Quentin Tarantino.

What better place, you'd think, for anyone to indulge an appetite for the conjuring arts -- let alone Oysters Rockefeller, Beef Wellington and whiskey cocktails named Sassy Black Magic?

If you can get in. And that's the snag.

12. John Star Needs Help
--------------------------------------------
Message by Andrea Osborn

Andrea Osborn, John's wife, asked me to send the following, in her words:

I am Andrea Osborn, wife of John Star. John is a magician and friend to many in the magic community (the U.S. and Europe). For over 20 years, John has only had vision in his left eye. Ever since John lost vision in his right eye, he has worn a prosthesis.

Recently, the vision in John's left eye has been deteriorating rapidly! He has little sight due to a severe cataract and poor retinal strength. The doctors tell us that if he does not receive cataract surgery within the next 6 weeks, his retina could become very compromised, the surgery becomes more complicated, and a greater chance to permanently lose the little vision he has left.

The situation is worsened by the fact that he has developed an infection in the right eye which must be resolved before the doctors will perform the cataract surgery. John's prosthetic eye was made many years ago and the aging of it has caused it to no longer fit properly and his eye no longer closes while sleeping which is creating other medical issues. Restoring clear vision in his left eye is critical in order for John to move forward and once again be able to function and live an independent and productive life again.

John desperately needs $3,600 to purchase a new prosthesis. I am reaching out to all of you in hopes that you can help John. Our entire family will be forever grateful. Thank you and God bless you.

Sincerely,
Andrea Osborn
