4. The Magic Word Podcast - Gay Blackstone - First Lady
Of Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
In
my opinion, Gay Blackstone undoubtedly deserves the title
of "First Lady of Magic" She has had an amazing
life and still continues to re-invent herself. As we all
know, she was married to and the lead assistant for Harry
Blackstone, Jr. for many years. She traveled and performed
around the world and held the longest running magic show
on "The Great White Way" that is Broadway.
But
before all that, she was just a girl from Fort Worth, Texas
who liked to dance. And dance she did as she was one of
the backdrop singers known as the "Gold Diggers"
on the old Dean Martin television show. But today, she is
a producer, director, consultant, lecturer and author working
with the "Masters of Illusion" TV and touring
show. She discusses all of this and more on this week's
podcast.
You
can watch some videos, see some photos, read the blog, listen
to the podcast online and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/304-gay-blackstone
You can also hear the podcast on iTunes, Tunein, Stitcher,
Feedpress and many other podcast platforms. Be sure to subscribe
to The Magic Word so you don't miss any upcoming episodes.
Also, be sure to Like our Facebook page at http://facebook.com/themagicwordpodcast
where you will see additional content plus receive notifications
when we record Live Streaming videos with some of our guests
when YOU can ask questions in real time for the podcast!
As
a side note, this podcast is listed as number 304; however,
it was recorded during the I.B.M. convention when I was
posting daily updates. So as not to disrupt the numbering
sequence, I kept those updates together. But I really wanted
to put this in as podcast number 300 since it was such an
important chat that deserved to stand out. I hope you enjoy
it. I also thought the timing of its release would be timely
since Gay will be attending Abbott's Get Together in Colon,
Michigan in a couple weeks (August 3-6) where attendees
will have a chance to say "hi" and talk about
some of the things she discussed in this podcast.
And
I want to congratulate the four winners of the Carl Andrews
DVDs whose names were randomly drawn from dozen submitted
in the recent contest: Orlando Ferrer, Chris Stockton, Kevin
Kapinos and Steve Gallagher Thanks for listening, guys,
and thanks for entering the contest. If you didn't win this
time or missed out on entering, be sure to watch and listen
each week as you never know when there will be another contest
offering valuable prizes.
Shipping
of these prizes is offset by the generous financial donations
of the Friends of The Magic Word. We would like to welcome
the newest member of The Friends of The Magic Word, Matt
Alexander and Richard Nunziato. Thank you, guys, for your
patronage and helping to keep The Magic Word on the air!
If you would like to help contribute, we would appreciate
any donation, no matter how large or small.

5. T.A.G. Time - #408 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.facebook.com/perondesign
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
I
am very fortunate I get to perform most all shows with my
wife. This week I had to do a solo show and it got me thinking
a lot in regards to load in, set up, show performance, break
down and load out. A lot of it I took for granted because
we are a team and I do not do many solo performances.
The more I thought about it, the more I started to come
up with a concept I have known for years but never really
put down on paper. I had always thought of it but never
to this level.
I feel it is very important to our marketing and to our
business model and I am sure it would be for yours as well.
I call it T.A.G. (TAG). TAG stands for Time At Gig. I started
to realize I needed to know what my TAG time was and break
down my TAG time. Learn from it and study it and determine
in what ways I can make it benefit me.
First, TAG time can be broken down to include the following.
Each associated with a time element to it:
- load in at the show
- set up of the show once items are at performance "staging
area"
- performance of the show
- any after show add ons you may do
- break down of the show
- load out and pack up
In essence it is the total time spent from the moment you
arrive at the event till you pull away to head home or to
another gig.
Each of these (listed above) has a time associated with
it. Each of these TAG times may also differ according to
what market I may be working. A birthday party show may
have a TAG time less than say a corporate illusion show.
For me this revelation of defining it in this fashion really
made sense to me. I now have TAG times for every market
I do and every show.
Now why is this important? Well for most of us, we would
love and have done multiple show days. If you do not know
your TAG time, then you spend an awkward moment trying to
calculate when you can get to another gig. You end up spending
too much time figuring it out and that makes for human error.
It also causes possible problems with a prospect because
you are not on top of your game.
If I know my Birthday Party TAG time is 2 hour (example),
then I know I can easily use that to determine exactly when
I am available to do the next event. This makes doing double
or triple book days much easier.
I want to always find a balance. This means keeping my TAG
time reasonable without losing any quality to the show I
present and perform. If I can lower my TAG time while maintaining
a quality show, then this becomes a winning formula for
me.
I then can perform more events in a day and earn more income
in the process. I do not have to spend a lot of time figuring
out when I can do the next event, because I would already
know.
This can also allow you to locate areas where you can make
improvements. If you realize your TAG time is too long,
then you can dissect it using the list above. Find which
area is taking the most time and then figure a way to cut
that time down.
This could simply mean a better way of packing up your equipment
so you make less trips to and from the car.
The TAG principle really does work and I encourage each
of you to give it a try. Write it down and go through it
for each of your markets and shows. Have it written down
and learn from it. I know you will not only find ways in
which to improve it, but it can also benefit your business
greatly.
If you do give TAG a try, I would love to hear from you.

6. Broken Wand - Abb Dickson
--------------------------------------------
Message by Gary E Bartlett
Abner
Pope Dickson, Jr.
1948-2016
Abb
Dickson, 67 of Jonesboro, GA passed away after a long illness.
Dickson was well known as a magician, a comic, an illusionist,
an actor, a producer and most of all, a force of nature.
He is known known for his work on the films Malibu Express
(1985), Picasso Trigger (1988) and The Brass Ring (1975).
For decades he was a familiar face at The Abbot's Get Together
in Colon, MI the Texas Association of Magicians (TAOM) and
many other conventions.
Soon
he would build a friendship with some of the funniest magicians
on the planet including Duke Stern and Karrell Fox. He would
often perform with them in sketches that lampooned magicians
at magic conventions across the United States.
Born
in Atlanta to Pope Dickson and Edith Donahoo Dickson. He
and his father owned Pope Dickson and Son funeral home;
and his mother was the personal secretary to President Roosevelt
and Truman. Abb became interested in the art of magic at
the age of ten after seeing a school show magician. He started
doing comedy magic in his senior year in high school and
went full time professional in 1970 performing as a magician
at Six Flags Over Georgia.
In
time he would tour the United States, Canada, Hawaii, and
Puerto Rico with his own "Presto!" illusion show
that included a crew of thirty. The show toured from 1975
to 1986 and featured 39 large stage illusions, including
one that was traditionally known as "The Disembodied
Princess". Dickson had first heard of that particular
trick after seeing a photo of it being performed by Orson
Welles (with his second wife, Rita Hayworth, assisting)
during a USO show in Hollywood in the '40s. In time, it
became one of Dickson's favorite illusions. This show would
lead to a lifetime friendship with Orson Welles and he would
appear in 8 Welles films and as an actor or magician in
5 other films. To read more about the friendship between
Orson Welles and Abb Dickson.
Abb
Dickson on the Cover of GENII MagazineAbb Dickson would
be featured on the cover of GENII Magazine in 1989 and the
Genii in the corner was given Abb's face. In 1997 Abb was
featured on the cover of THE LINKING RING when he became
the International President of The International Brotherhood
of Magicians.
Dickson
would later specialize in trade shows but he also created
special effects for several Star Wars films and the original
Superman franchise. He also created some of the exhibits
in the World of Coca-Cola museum in Atlanta. His broad life
experience, understanding of human nature and psychology
coupled with his love of comedy and magical creativity led
to his demand as a consultant to many major corporations
for their advertising campaigns and product launches.
Abb
had many associations with some of today's top magicians
from David Copperfield, Harry Blackstone, Lance Burton &
Penn & Teller just to name a few. He was also a memeber
of the world famous Magic Castle. Which is a private club
in Hollywood, CA to magicians and celebrities. Abb was the
creative consultant on numerous television special and live
productions.
Even
then, Abb always found time to perform magic, often for
children that needed magic in their lives. Abb was a man
with one of the biggest hearts in the world of entertainment.
At home Abb was known to support numerous charities such
as: Historical Jonesboro, the Clayton Performing Arts Center,
Arts Clayton & many others.

8. Abbott's 79th Get Together
--------------------------------------------
Message by Chuck/Webmaster
With
summer well under way, the Abbott's Magic Company, the Colon
Lions Club and the Colon Chamber of Commerce are proud to
celebrate the Annual Abbott's Magic Get-Together. The dates
are August 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th of 2016. Once again, magicians
from all over the world will migrate to Colon, Michigan,
the Magic Capital of the World, to be a part of this family
oriented event. Tents and campers will magically pop up
everywhere to swell this tiny little village until it appears
there is no room for even one more person. Everyone scampers
to be a part of this fun convention.
Magicians
will be performing in the streets, restaurants and bars.
The annual craft fair will take place on Friday and Saturday.
The yearly fireworks will go off as in recent years on Friday
night after the show at the Colon High School. Visit the
Colon Historical Museum for a special Magic adventure or
take a cemetery tour where many famous and not so famous
magicians have chosen to perform their final act and become
a permanent part of the magical history of Colon.
Each
of the four days ends with a world class magic and variety
show held in the air-conditioned Colon High School Auditorium.
These are not your average birthday party magicians and
each show is different, with comedy, large illusions, variety
acts, and much more. Tickets for the show are $25.00 for
reserved seats, $20.00 for a bleacher seat.
For
more information, contact the Abbott's Magic Company, 124
S. St. Joseph St., Colon, MI 49040 or at 269 - 432-3235.
Or visit us online at www.magicgettogether.com where you

the height of his career, award-winning magician Wayne Dobson
had his own prime-time television series which regularly
drew millions of viewers.
Having
joined the Magic Circle at just 16 the handsome Leicester-born
magic man shot to fame after an outstanding performance
at the Royal Variety Show in 1989.
Yet
what his legions of fans didn't realise then was that the
previous year, at the age of just 31, he had been diagnosed
with multiple sclerosis.
Now
59 he is in a wheelchair and paralysed from the neck down.
MS is a neurological condition which affects 100,000 people
in the UK, with symptoms typically beginning when people
are in their 20s or 30s.
It
impacts vision, balance and mobility and can also cause
incontinence, stiffness, tremors, swallowing difficulties
and poor mental health. Experts believe a combination of
environmental and genetic factors can trigger the condition
