2. Brett Daniels vs Criss Angel
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded on by Gene McCarthy

Las Vegas Review Journal

A magician wants to take his beef with Criss Angel to a new place - a cage, specifically, for a mixed martial arts brawl.

All for charity, of course.

"A lot of people want to see this fight happen," Brett Daniels says in a video challenge to the Luxor headliner. "A lot of people want to see you get your ass beat. I'm one of 'em."
"It's about time somebody called him out," Daniels added by telephone. "What can I do, say, 'Let's do card tricks'?"

The two once were friends and prospective business partners for a packaged tour of magicians similar to the Broadway and touring show "The Illusionists." But Daniels said they could never come to terms on a contract, and he claims Angel proceeded to use illusionsDaniels has the rights to for both the touring show "The Supernaturalists" and the new edition of his Luxor showcase.

Daniels also shared a July 12 email he says he sent to Angel:
"Tell me why you didn't ask me before you put my levitation efx in your new show?" he wrote. "I see your many posts with Chuck Lidell (sic), Randy Couture - all the MMA guys … . Your countless tweets of u in the gym - you're in shape, buddy!"

"I'm challenging you to a full contact 3 round MMA fight. Las Vegas, 2017. You and me - hey - I'm a 55-year-old man … out of shape and never got into a fight in my adult life.
"But for you - I'll learn how to fight," he concluded. "We'll do it for charity. It'll be fun."
Angel performs 41 weeks a year at Luxor and it seems highly unlikely he or his Cirque du Soleil co-producers would agree to anything that risks cancellation of a show which can't go on without its star.

Neither Angel's publicist nor Cirque (which is a little busy hosting Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr for Thursday's "Love" anniversary bash) had responded by midday.
"They probably won't let him do it," Daniels acknowledged, though he also is willing to wait until the Luxor show runs its course. "But Criss is a surprising guy. He might just say, 'You know what you big-mouth Brett Daniels? You're on. Let's do it.' "

"He can ignore it, but it diminishes his brand, his (expletive)."

And few could argue it would raise a staggering amount of money for charity, presumably the pediatric cancer research for which Angel is organizing a Sept. 12 benefit concert called "Heal Every Life Possible." Angel's toddler son is battling leukemia.

Last weekend's UFC 200 announced a live gate of $10.7 million and more than 1.5 million pay-per-view buys, with an estimated gross in the ballpark of $90 million. If Angel-Daniels could generate even a third of that, the offer might not be as ridiculous as it sounds.

4. America's Got Talent' Child Magician Could Be The Youngest Winner Ever
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded Steven Adams

'America's Got Talent' child magician pulls assistants out of nowhere…

The show has plenty of magicians, but this kid could be the youngest winner ever.

'America's Got Talent' has plenty of great acts, but the magicians are always my favorite. On Wednesday night, a young child who had cut his sister in half in his first audition, again impressed the judges with a second audition. In it, he pulled several beautiful assistants out of a box and somehow managed to switch places with his sister, somehow winding up right next to the judges.

5. The Magic Word Podcast - What's App With Carl Andrews
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

We are back this week after the I.B.M. international convention in San Antonio, Texas with another new podcast. This week we feature Carl Andrews, maker of ShowCues, the phone/tablet music app for your show, among many other magic apps. Carl was also instrumental in the development of "Illusions" restaurant in the 1980's which was located outside of Indianapolis, Indiana and featured close-up magicians like Michael Close, Chris Kenner, Homer Luwag, and many more magicians who went on to notoriety. Carl has been a successful restaurant magician for many years and contributed to the betterment of other magicians through his books and DVDs on the subject. He also performed in Hawaii for eight years then entertained on cruise ships and more.

You can watch a couple videos, see some photos, read the blog, listen online and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/303-carl-andrews You can also listen to the podcast through iTunes, Tunein, Feedpress, Stitcher or your favorite podcatcher.

During the I.B.M. convention, we posted daily updates, produced LIVE video feeds via our Facebook page, had a contest, and more. I hope you enjoyed the daily podcasts and felt as if you were actually there. If you missed any of the podcasts, you can catch up by visiting The Magic Word website at http://TheMagicWordPodcast.com And speaking of contests, I want to congratulate Richard Nunziato and Dale Rabon who won copies of Rick Heath's booklet, "Magician With A Paintbrush". Rick was the lead artist for Le Grand David Magic Show and responsible for all the beautiful posters, backdrops, curtains and more.

And if you haven't yet "Liked" our Facebook page (at http://Facebook.com/TheMagicWordPodcast), now is a good time to do that. Facebook now offers a "Live Streaming" feature that allows me to broadcast the chats I have with my guests. This means that you can ask questions through Facebook so you can be part of the podcast. You will only receive notifications of live broadcasts if you "Like" the page. If you haven't "Liked" the page yet, then you already missed my chats with Gay Blackstone, Lance Burton and others. But the podcasts with these and other legends will be coming soon to The Magic Word. Subscribe now and never miss another one!

6. Roadblocks To Creativity - #407 - Kyle Peron

Message by Kyle Peron (US)

http://www.kpmagicproducts.com

I think the beauty of being a magician is the ability to simply create. I am also an artist, so this part of what we do fascinates me. We can take nothing and create something amazing from it. We have the ability to produce a creative and entertaining experience. The problem most magicians have with being creative is the inability to think freely and openly about any and all possibilities. When we brainstorm ideas for acts or routines, we tend to place roadblocks that hinder us from ever really getting anywhere.

The worst enemy to creativity is us. What happens is that we must teach our minds to be open to thinking. Each and every one of you reading this right now has the ability to be as creative as you want to be. The problem is that as we think of wonderful ideas, we stop going down the road because thoughts enter our mind that inhibit us.

I always say that when being creative, money is no factor. Now of course it will be eventually, but I am making a simple point here. Creativity alone does not cost anything. If there is no cost to creative thought, why hinder yourself in the first place.

I also always say that when thinking of ideas, never limit yourself by saying, "how am I going to do this or afford this." As soon you state this, your hindering creativity. Creativity does not need road blocks that we seem to always place on ourselves.

Creativity needs free reign to grow and prosper. If we allow ourselves to think freely, we can come up with amazingly fresh ideas that we would never have thought of before.

When one stops to think "How am I going to accomplish this" or "How can I afford this," then what happens is the mind puts up these road blocks. Creativity comes to a grinding halt. All those great ideas inside your head never come about because we are stopping ourselves before we even get started.

When I start to brainstorm about ideas for a new routine, I try and place myself first into a spot with little distractions. I train my mind to simply think. In creative thought there are no wrong answers. There are only possibilities to be discovered. So allow these ideas to enter your head freely. Find a method for recording these ideas. This can be pen and paper, a computer or a recording device. Allow these ideas to stream from you.

Now do not get bothered by the notion that these ideas may not mean anything or may not be complete. That is simply natural. It happens. Just record them. Some of the best ideas in magic came from incomplete segments of an idea. However, these ideas would never have been recorded if one stopped themselves simply because the thought did not make sense.

So as you are thinking creatively understand that there are no rules to hold you down. There are no roadblocks on the road to creative thought. The only roadblocks are ones we place ourselves. So learn to be open with any and all ideas no matter how bizarre they may be. Do not hinder your creativity by wondering how something will be done or the cost associated with it. Do not hinder yourself by not recording an idea simply because it does not make full sense to you at that moment. Simply let your mind be open to any idea. When you start to do this, you will be amazed at what comes about.

If you are so hung up on one idea, you will often times miss the 100 other ideas your mind wants to create for you. Do not allow these wonderful ideas to be lost. So do not worry so much about price or how it can be built. There is ALWAYS a way to make something work. That is to be figured out AFTER you have the creative idea. Never hinder thinking freely just because of the worry about cost or how something will be created.

Creativity is our most prized skill that we simply take for granted and never use enough of. Learn to think creatively and open the mind to the ideas that we all have there. I guarantee your magic will become more unique and your audiences will thank you for it.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. Live + On-Line + Japanese Audiences = A Sure Winner!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Critelli

The Japan Cup
Japan Close-Up Magicians' Association

If I were a betting person, I would wager a great sum upon what a sizable proportion of young Japanese women between the ages of 16 and forever would be doing daily from 10:00 to 10:30 pm in the near future. Based upon the recent buzz from Twitter and Facebook, there is a growth industry for on-line live Magic performers and performances - younger Japanese Magicians talking about themselves, the Art, and doing some wonderful Magic seems to have just the right mix for an Internet hit.

Dr. Tashiro Shigeru, founder and past President of The Japan Close-Up Magicians' Association (JCMA) selected seven Magicians for the 30-minute shows that are called "Colpo della Strega" shown on Showroom - Live, a program produced by a large Japanese entertainment company. Each performer had one show during the initial series, and the second series is already in the works. As with many of these social media events, each Magician who has at least 100 "followers" wins another spot in the second series. According to my sources in Japan, the seven will be busy for another run. According to my having met and seen several of these performers, that is not a surprise!

The site to visit is: https://www.showroom-live.com/event/colpodellastrega

. . . if you can read Japanese, you will be able to read all the information! I do not read Japanese, but I was able to figure out that each of the seven Magicians will be performing on a given date at a time shown that, somehow, was "my time" - that is, in my time zone. Ah, the Magic of the chip! Additionally, each of the performers does have a short YouTube clip that seems to be on a loop and a great deal more - all in Japanese though.

It seems that with enough followers or votes, a person moves up the rooms (a type of ranking system), and if he can compete in three series, then the production company will promote them in additional ways. This seems like some phase of America's Got Talent, but I am not, I confess, any type of expert on that form of talent discovery and promotion. Indeed, my "social media" skills are way below the typical 6-year old's!

I was able to watch a young Magician right at the stated time - 9:00 am. However, right before he appeared, a slew, massive amount, large bunch, and countless "cute" figures popped up - technical term, I think, avatars for the bevy of Japanese women who are current and will-be followers of that particular performer. Dr. Tashiro was there as well, and I did manage to "sign in" using a Facebook connection (nope, I am not at all skilled with that tool, either, so if I could figure it out in a short time, folks living in the 21st Century should have no difficulty at all). I was able to make some comments and watch the crowd of avatars jump up and write other things - usually in Japanese, but occasionally one would be very polite and aim a comment in English to me. Arigato!

The young man I watched is named Shade, and although he was both conversing with his many followers as well as talking about Magic, he did several effects perfectly. There was continuous "jumping of avatars" signaling delight and reaffirmation of the fans' loyalty. The details of voting and showing support may be much more important for the Japanese audience, but the whole event was quite enjoyable.

This format is something that Dr. Tashiro feels has great potential for Magic in general. It seems to be a very comfortable way to introduce much of "the younger generation" to what Magic is, and the immediacy of the live aspects gives a vibrancy than enhances the "almost" face-to-face conversation with the performers. Again, I still use AOL email, so I am not the best spokesperson for all that such tools might build, but I do know that seeing Magic live is the best way to start to love Magic, and this "younger generation medium" delivers the best Japan has to offer.

And just when you thought it couldn't get any better in Japan . . . the Japan Cup will be held in Tokyo. (The most exciting city in the world - I am a bit biased . . .) around the end of March, 2017. However, what happens at THAT convention is that the Japanese close-up contestants for FISM Asia 2017 will be selected! That Magic event will be held in Gifu (close to Nagoya - my home away from home) from November 2 through November 5, 2017. Asia is Magic, and if you want a different type of close-up Magic convention, do consider The Japan Cup, and do what you can to be in Gifu later in the year! I sure will try. I will have more information on these two stellar events later this year and early in 2017.

10. The Houdini Museum Tour & Magic Show
--------------------------------------------
Article sent by Mel Kientz (US)

A must-see attraction: The Houdini Museum Tour & Magic Show

The only building in the world dedicated to master magician Harry Houdini is located nearby in Scranton, Pa. Created by nationally known magicians Dorothy Dietrich and Dick Brookz, The Houdini Museum Tour & Magic Show offers an all ages experience devoted to Harry Houdini. Along with the opportunity to view an expansive collection of one-of-a-kind artifacts, the two-and-one-half to three-hour experience includes a movie, guided tour, magic and main stage show, and souvenir demonstration.

When guests first arrive, they are shown a short film with rare footage that gives people a better feel for who Houdini was. After the film guests are taken on a guided tour through the collection of artifacts, while hearing interesting and unique stories about the daring magician. The experience culminates with a magic show that includes live animals, such as doves, poodles and rabbits. The show relies on audience participation, and culminates in an audience member being levitated.

The Houdini Museum Tour & Magic Show has been entertaining audiences for 27 years and provides insight into Houdini's life beyond performing. "What's great about this attraction is it's completely appropriate for any age. Kids, teenagers and adults all have a wonderful time," shared Dietrich. "People don't really know what to expect when they visit us because there isn't anything to compare it to. Houdini was a great role model and gave back to society in many ways."

If you go: The Houdini Museum Tour & Magic Show is open daily July thru August, and only weekends September thru June. Showtime is 1 p.m. but additional morning, afternoon and evening time slots are available for groups. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. Ticket prices are $17.95 for adults and $14.95 for children age 11 and younger when purchased in advance. $20 at the door.

The Haunted Evening

Picked by the Pennsylvania Department of Tourism as one of the "most haunted places in Pennsylvania," the Houdini Museum is also touted as the home of the world's longest-running paranormal psychic theater and séance event. "Guests can look forward to a full evening of interactive fun," Dietrich says of the experience, dubbed The Haunted Evening. "For anyone who likes spooky stuff, this event is definitely not-to-be-missed."

Explore the line between stage magic and the paranormal every Saturday at 8 p.m. The evening opens with mindreading and telepathy, and then moves into a séance led by museum co-creator Dick Brookz, a paranormalist, psychic detective and psychic investigator.

If you go: The Haunted Evening runs Saturdays, 8 p.m. to midnight. $35 per person, advanced registration required. Special performances can be arranged for groups and fundraisers.

For more information on the Houdini Museum Tour & Magic Show and The Haunted Evening, or to reserve tickets: call (570) 342-5555 or visit houdini.org.
