2. 'Now You See Me 3' is already happening
--------------------------------------------
'Now You See Me 3' is already in the works. Your eyes are
not deceiving you. This is not a sleight of hand or an illusion.
This is happening, people, and we're still more than a year
away before the second film hits theaters. This means that
the semi-decent magician-heist film is now becoming a trilogy.
As
reported by Variety, the news of Now You See Me 3 was announced
during a Lionsgate company conference call to discuss quarterly
earnings with analysts. CEO Jon Feltheimer stated that the
studio has already begun early work on the third installment,
as they expect Now You See Me 2 to pull in a hefty amount
of box office dough.
The
first film debuted to mixed reviews and currently stands
at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, which, if you remember how high
school grades work, means it failed. However, it made more
than $351 million worldwide with a production budget of
$75 million, which was all the ammunition the studio needed
to sign off on a sequel.
The
story centered on a band of criminal magicians known as
The Four Horsemen, played by Jesse Eisenberg (Batman v Superman),
Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games), Isla Fisher (The Great
Gatsby) and Dave Franco (Neighbors). With each astounding
performance they would pull off another heist, stealing
massive amounts of money from either a bank or a particularly
wealthy individual. A pair of detectives, played by Mark
Ruffalo (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Melanie Laurent (Enemy)
were hot on their trail. Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't
seen the first film, but it all ended with The Four Horsemen
pulling off their biggest stunt yet and discovering that
Ruffalo's Dylan Rhodes was the one secretly leading them
down a bread crumb trail to become members of an ancient
order of magicians.
Now
You See Me 2, officially called Now You See Me: The Second
Act, will see the Horsemen resurface to come face to face
with a new enemy who wants them to pull off their most dangerous
heist to date. Director Jon M. Chu recently wrapped production
on the film for a June 10, 2016 theatrical release. Most
of the principal cast members are returning for the sequel,
including Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. However, Lizzy
Caplan (Masters of Sex) will replace Fisher, and Harry Potter
himself, Daniel Radcliffe, has joined the fray.
As
Feltheimer said during the conference call, Lionsgate believes
See Me 2 one will top the first film's box office numbers,
hence such early motions getting Now You See Me 3 off the
ground. It's still mind-blowing that an average and dare
I say semi-forgettable film such as this could become such
an investment for the studio, but it doesn't take much nowadays
to warrant sequels -- or in this case a trilogy.

The

history of magic as an art form has been shrouded in mystery

Sacha
Baron Cohen to star in "Mandrake The Magician"
Film
The
Tracking Board has learned that Sacha Baron Cohen will star
in Warner Bros. live-action adaptation of the classic comic
strip character "Mandrake the Magician." TCB's
unnamed sources indicate that the film is expected to update
the character, who debuted in 1934, for modern audiences.
Baron Cohen will play Mandrake, an illusionist and escape
artist that is recruited by the United States government
for a top secret mission.
Etan
Cohen (writer/director "Get Hard") will direct
the film from a script by David Peoples, Janet Peoples and
Tom Wheeler. Charles Roven and Andy Horowitz will produce
the film, while Alan Glazer and Rocky Shepard will serve
as EPs. Cate Adams and Jesse Ehrman will oversee for Warner
Bros.
Mandrake
was created by Lee Falk, just before he created fellow news
strip hero the Phantom. Phil Davis came aboard as artist
and illustrated Falk's scripts early in Mandrake's run.
The character, who predates Superman by four years, is sometimes
called the first superhero thanks to his abilities and globetrotting
adventures.
"Mandrake
the Magician" has been in development since 2007, with
a number of directors (including Mimi Leder) and actors
(Hayden Christensen and Jonathan Rhys Meyers among them)
attached to the project. "Mandrake" was adapted
into a 12-part serial in 1939, and also had a TV movie in
1979. The character has recently appeared in comics published
by Dynamite Entertainment, where he crossed over with other
King Features heroes.

7. The Road Less Traveled - #403 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
It
was a recent drive to a magic convention that got me thinking
of this topic. I realized just how much driving has changed
over the years. Before the dawn of GPS, I would often take
a map with me and take the most common route. Highways and
roads traveled by many, became the "safe" way
to go. As I traveled with my GPS to the convention, I realized
how much it has made me take roads less traveled before.
By
listening to my GPS I was able to take roads I would not
have normally ventured down. But as I traveled down these
old country roads, my mind opened up and my eyes were seeing
wonderful things I have not seen before. I was enjoying
the experience because I was not seeing the same old thing.
Magic can and should be very much like this trip I took.
I
realize just how often magicians in general take the safe
passage or the safe road when venturing down any path with
their magic. Whether it is creating a new routine for a
show or learning a new act, we tend to often travel down
the same paths others before us have taken. I think we do
this because 1) it is all we know, and 2) it is a much safer
way to go. We feel safe and secure knowing others have blazed
the path before us.
But
is this the right thing to do? Is this allowing us to grow
in the art of magic? I would have to say no. I think it
hinders a person's creative growth. By traveling down the
same path as other magicians, you will be seeing what they
see and doing what they do. In many ways it is a dangerous
way of developing routines that really are not true to who
you are.
We
each are unique and we each have our own character and personalities
on stage. Many of us try and do routines based on what we
have seen along this road that we travel on. If we are all
traveling the same road, then we cannot help but to develop
similar styles or routines that are the same as others.
But what happens is that you are 1) not finding yourself
or staying true to yourself as a performer and, 2) you are
not pushing yourself enough to grow creatively.
Think
about it this way. If you take a trip and take a road that
many have not taken before, don't you start to become more
aware? All of a sudden you are forced to see things in a
new way. You are forced to be more alert and to see things
that you may not have seen before. A heavily traveled road
makes us blind but a less traveled road makes us aware.
Do
not fear to venture on another road or another path with
your magic. Do not fear going down a different avenue with
a routine or a new magical idea. It may be frightening at
first because you have no idea where it may lead, but that
is and can be the beauty of it all. Beauty is allowing yourself
to take these trips to see what comes of it. In many cases,
by doing so, you are experiencing great things and your
creativity can not help but to be heightened.
Some
of the most creative minds in our art come from those who
you realize think differently than the norm. Instead of
traveling down the same roads, they chose to go a different
direction. Instead of taking the easy and fast highway,
they chose to take the back country road. Now sure it may
take them longer to get there, but guaranteed they see more
than we do and they learn a lot more as well. The end result
is awareness and creative thought.
Try
this sometime soon. It really does work and helps you to
see exactly what I am referring to. I call it a creativity
road trip. If you have a GPS this is even better. However,
a good map will also do you just fine. Pick a place you
have never been to. Plug that into your GPS and just start
to drive. It sounds silly or maybe even a bit scary, but
trust me here.
The
idea is that you are going to a place you have never been
to or experienced before. You are getting there often times
via roads you have not traveled on before. Because of this
new destination, you are forcing your mind and your body
to be more aware and more alert.
As
you drive start to notice the things around you. Take in
the sites and the scenery. Feel free to stop at the shops
along the way. Enjoy and notice how your mind is becoming
more alert and aware of new things it is seeing. It has
to because it is being bombarded with new sensory impressions.
This is what total creativity is about.
A
trip like this opens your mind because it forces you to.
But it also allows you start appreciating taking roads less
traveled. The next time you have a choice of taking your
magic down a road that others have gone on, say no. Instead
take a different path. I am sure the trip you take will
be much more rewarding.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

10. "Magic For Fort Mac" Benefit
--------------------------------------------
Message by John Kaplan (Canada)
Here's
a follow up on the recent "Magic for Fort Mac"
benefit that I organized and featured the outstanding talents
of 9 stage magicians/illusionists along with a half-dozen
close-up magicians ...
A
Great Success!!!
That's
the best description of our magic for fort mac benefit that
took place this past Monday, May 16th.
Over
700 people attended the performance, and by all accounts
were thoroughly entertained by the stellar stage and close-up
magicians that volunteered their time and talent to pull
this amazing effort off.
Other
than theatre staffing, everything was donated. Presto Print
of Richmond provided the posters, flyers and signage. The
Tri-Cities Rotaract youth delivered flyers and put up posters
in New Westminster all weekend. The Burnaby Now donated
a half-page to advertise the event. The performers gave
freely and willingly of their time and talent, a number
of businesses contributed items to the silent auction. Several
associations helped spread the word. The New Westminster
Fire & Rescue Services members collected an additional
$1,774 at the event through their "Fill the Boot"
campaign. Numerous friends and relatives pitched in to sell
tickets, collect silent auction contributions and promote
the event.
The
dust is still settling. Once the remaining silent auction
bid money is collected, we will be handing over $8,154.02
to the Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal
which will
be matched by the federal government, meaning the Magic
For Fort Mac benefit raised $16,308.04 to help the families
of Fort McMurray that have been devastated by the tragic
wildfire that swept through their community on May 3rd (and
continues to burn on as of May 19th).
A
big thank you to everybody that helped make MAGIC happen
through this event.

11. Alexanderia the Great Featured In The June Linking Ring
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (US)
So
what name do you take when you're one of the few women escape
artists in the world? How about "Alexanderia the Great?
Read about how and why Donna Purnell took up escapes, got
her name, and is in high demand as an entertainer. Read
about her and so much more in the June issue of the I.B.M.'s
The Linking Ring.
The
I.B.M. Annual Convention July 2-5 in San Antonio, Texas,
will feature a new innovation -- the Triple Treat. This
is the name given to three separate one-man shows which
will be repeated three times over three days in order that
everyone will have a chance to see all three. The three
magicians are Brian Gillis, Richard Turner, and Paul Vigil.
This is just one more reason to register for and attend
the best magic convention around.
"The
Ten-Second Helper" is a short article about a new approach
to using helpers in a kid-show. And Max Sutch tells us "The
Day Fred Astaire Hooked Me on Magic." Simone Marron
brings us a first-hand report on "A Star-Studded Night
at the Academy of Magical Arts Awards."
The
Linking Ring columnists came through again in June. Kent
Cummins tells us how to "Sell Your Act With Letters"
in his Marketing Magic column. Adele Friel Rhindress devotes
her Magical Moments column to her friendship with Associate
Editor Jason Goldberg, which began at a magic convention
-- a major reason to attend such events. Bev Bergeron asks
(and answers) the question "What Makes Good Comedy?"
in his column Cutting Up Jackpots. Skip Way continues to
tell us about Polishing The Rings, asking "Print or
Digital?"
Mike
Powers turns over his The Card Corner to old friend and
pro Paul Lelekis, who brings us "Beats All Poker Scam."
Andrew Woo explains his "Splitting the Dinner Bill
in Simple Diversions. In The Expert At The Tech Table, Jeff
Prace invited Mathieu Bich to explain his "iDuplicate,"
and Chris Beason gives us "Optical Zoom" in his
Situationally Yours column. In his Auto-Magic column, Michael
M Breggar presents "Not Just Another Book Test."
Ralph
Felder wrote this issue's One Man Parade, describes for
us six effects, complete with terrific illustrations by
Tony Dunn.
This
month's Hocus In Focus is where readers find reviews of
new magic effects on the market. There are nine such new
products in June, including books, DVDs and tricks. Thanks
to all our reviewers for their time and expertise.
The
June Broken Wand brings tributes to twelve magicians. In
addition, there is a separate In Memoriam to long-time columnist
for this magazine, Peter Marucci, written by Joan Caesar.
The
Linking Ring is a member benefit of membership in the International
Brotherhood of Magicians, the largest organization of the
magical arts in the world. For more information, go to www.magician.org
