Due to the high demand of downloads we have had to change our server. With each issue receiving on average 100,000 downloads (Franz Harary holds the record with 168,000 downloads) our service provider cannot handle the demand. I have changed over the URL and the new one will be www.vanishmagic.com to get your free copy of the latest edition. We will be directing our old URL to the current one.

Dynamo: One bit of magic I can't do is cure myself of Crohn's disease

"I'm hoping that going out and performing will inspire people with the disease to go out and achieve their dreams too," says Bradford-born magician or a man who can, quite literally, walk on water and vanish at will, magician Dynamo knows a thing or two about overcoming the impossible.

Seemingly the only thing he does not have a magic solution for, however, is his own health.
The 33-year-old star is battling incurable and debilitating Crohn's disease, a condition causing inflammation to the stomach lining, and a host of painful side effects.

Following a life-saving operation as a teenager, Dynamo - real name Steven Frayne - controls the often-hereditary illness through diet and medication.

But with no cure in sight, the illusionist today admits he is now facing the prospect of wearing a colostomy bag - just like his grandmother.

5. History Of Magic: The Zanzigs

Message by Laurice Chavez

Link: http://magictricksforkids.org/zanzigs/
Husband-and-wife tandem Julius and Agnes Zanzig took the world by storm with their two-person mental telepathy act. Using a sophisticated code system, they were able to astonish audiences from England to China to Australia with their "Two Minds But with a Single Thought" routine. Learn all about them at http://magictricksforkids.org/zanzigs/

2. Add This to Your Magic Arsenal: The Towel Elephant
Link: http://magictricksforkids.org/towel-elephant/
No, this isn't a magic trick. It's actually just a simple bit of towel folding. But the towel elephant piques the interest of people so well (plus it's so "shareable") that it can help you garner the attention and engagement you're looking for. Interested? Learn how to do it right here: http://magictricksforkids.org/towel-elephant/

3. How to Get More Bookings from Your Website in 2016

In this age of smartphones and Google searches, it's imperative for magicians not only to have websites, but to have websites that effectively convert prospective clients into actual ones. 6. Magic Word Podcast - Shawn McMaster - Superman Of Magic
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells MIMC (US)

Here at the beginning of a New Year, we are going to take a break from the #MagicCereal investigation involving magic thievery and start off with a little light conversation featuring Shawn McMaster. Shawn tells us an interesting story involving his experience of appearing on "America's Got Talent" (sic) and why he entered the competition with the hopes of losing. He also discusses working on a few independent movies and the creation of his signature routine as Superman on stage. We briefly discuss how he has had this routine "lifted" by other magicians and the ethics of such actions.

You can watch a video of Shawn performing his Superman routine, see some photos, read the blog, get some links to cool things, listen online, and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/271-shawn-mcmaster And, of course, you can also download the podcast using your favorite podcatcher or through iTunes, Stitcher, Tunein and FeedPress. Please be sure to subscribe to The Magic Word so you don't miss any upcoming podcasts. And they promise to be "doozies".

Next week, we return to the controversy surrounding thievery in magic with Cosmo Solano who talks about his side of the story regarding the interaction between him and Gregory Wilson as it relates to a dispute over the providence of a marketed product. Future weeks will bring podcasts with others whom Gregory mentioned in episode #268 and who are willing to come out and defend their interests. Prepare to hear some serious stuff soon on The Magic Word.

Since it is the Holiday season, I thought I would write and share with you a poem. Just something to cheer you up, make you smile and laugh a little bit. Best to you all.

Twas the night before the gig, when all through the place
the magician had panicked, he was still packing his case.
He practiced his sleights over here and over there,
tried showing his wife, who really didn't care.

The birthday child was nestled all snug in his bed,
how to torment the magician danced in his head.
The client woke early and slapped on a cap,
waiting for the show, so he could take a long nap.

When out on the lawn there rose such a clatter,
the magician arrived and was reciting his patter.
The kids were all hyper and ran like a flash,
the magician was glad he got payment in cash.

It was very cold outside with fresh, fallen snow,
"An outside performance!? This is going to blow!"
When, what to his wandering eyes should appear,
but an overweight uncle with a 6 pack of beer.

He was a little odd, so lively and quick,
shouted, "Hey magic man, I'll show you a trick!"
I know a good card trick and it's not very lame,
Uses 21 cards and I'll call them by name.

Now all the piles of cards, they need a good mixen,
The magician just thought, "It needs lots of fixen."
He set up the show, against the back wall.
4 kids showed up, "you're kidding.. that's all?"

The silks were produced when one started to fly,
It was gone, history as it flew to the sky.
The parents were loud and obnoxious too,
then the kids started to chant a sarcastic "boooo".

He said not a word and went straight to his work,
The show must go on, even for this little jerk.
He did a few tricks that messed with their head,
When he suddenly knew he had nothing to dread.

The parents passed out, the kids were all foul,
As the magician packed up and took his last bow.
They heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
5 shows in one day, what a long night!

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

Magic Castle's Most Awarded Performer
CarneyMagic is a theatre show that blends mind-blowing sleight of hand with intelligence, taste, and wit, into a unique evening of pure entertainment. This is definitely NOT your typical "magic" show. Carney's approach is smart, engaging, and often hilarious.

As seen on David Letterman's Late Night
Pin-balling between jaunty comedic riffs and astonishing sleight of hand, Carney will have you reeling with his hilarious audience participation segments, as well as his embodiment of multiple characters. He's not like any magician you've seen before.

Regarded by his peers as one of the top sleight of hand performers in the world, Carney has won more awards from Hollywood's Magic Castle than anyone in their history, in every category.

You won't see any big boxes, tigers, dancing girls, or lasers. Just a quirky, likable guy, cracking-wise and doing some pretty amazing things … and all the while, you'll be laughing yourself silly.

CarneyMagic is a show that will amaze you, as it charms and delights.

CarneyMagic is family friendly, but not a kiddie show!
Best for ages 8 and older.

'The Illusionists' Work Their Magic On Broadway's Economy

by Lee Seymour

"We're going to make our money back," says producer Lee Marshall without hesitation. "And then we'll be returning to Broadway next holiday season, and hopefully for years to come."

Big words for a producer in a volatile industry. But Marshall has both the track record and a unique property to back up his confidence. The Illusionists, now in its second holiday stint on Broadway, is one of the most lucrative live shows to hit New York in recent years. In 2014 it recouped its modest capitalization in just three weeks, and while business is a tad slower this year, it's on track to pull off the same feat. The show is a rotating lineup of the industry's top magicians and stuntmen, an evening curated around their most-hyped acts, from card tricks to pyrotechnics. This year's group is led by the Marilyn Manson-esque Dan Sperry and Las Vegas showman Jeff Hobson.

At the heart of the property is Simon Painter, a producer of live entertainment in Australia, who conceived it in Sydney three years ago. It's been making money hand-over-magic-fist since then, thanks in a large part to Painter's shrewd partnerships, including the one with Marshall. "We originally envisioned this to run for only two weeks," he laughs. Marshall, who produced and managed David Copperfield's tours, and was instrumental in building the famous magician's $800 million fortune, oversees the brand in North America.

This speaks one of the show's greatest strengths: its faceted, iterative nature. The Broadway show is one of four unique versions that are currently in performance around the world, each with its own stable of performers and investors (after the Broadway run concludes, it will continue to tour North America through 2017). Painter holds the rights to the brand, along with Tim Lawson, and they partner with local producers in each foreign market to handle marketing and logistics. In Painter's ideal world The Illusionists would be a "forever franchise," with new tours and new performers putting their own spin on an established formula for years to come. Marvel, eat your heart out.

But Broadway is only getting one of those versions. A mix of traditional entertainment finance and strategies cribbed from the rock concert model are behind its New York success. These, along with a cross-generational appeal that most musicals can't really boast.

"I watched a performance where one of the audience volunteers was a young boy," says Painter, "and the next was his great-grandfather. That's four generations watching the same show together." Marshall adds: "Magic is one of the few types of performance without a language barrier. The show was a hit in Mexico, Dubai, Germany, and Australia before it came to New York."

"We also came to Broadway with a product we already knew was profitable," Painter explains. This is in sharp contrast to most musicals that arrive after out-of-town tryouts. Those properties spend millions in Chicago and roll the costs into the Broadway capitalization, hoping to make it all back in the Big Apple (though producers are finally starting to wise up and minimize that expense).

To make the most of the Broadway stint, Marshall took the unusual step of hiring four press representatives. New Broadway shows tend have one, two at the most. But the producers see New York not only as a fertile market itself, but a bed of support for the rest of the property's incarnations. In addition to a standard Broadway press house (Boneau/Bryan-Brown) and a national brand manager (DKC), they've enlisted press reps catering exclusively to Asian and Hispanic markets.

"They're taking all the great press from New York and feeding it directly into their local markets: Mexico, Japan, Korea, and China." It's a strategy often used by big-name bands on tour, or huge international jackpots like Wicked, but almost never for a limited-run Broadway show. "We've been really proactive in building a multi-ethic audience for this property, and it's reflected in the response. We're essentially building an international brand at home. "

There's also the appeal of merchandise, which is a Broadway staple but not usually a money-maker for the producers. Merch companies will invest a sum in exchange for the exclusive rights to make and sell the swag, then take the lion's share of the profits. At The Illusionists, every kid who sees the show will be drawn to 'The Ultimate Magic Kit' sold in the lobby, and as the kit is made and sold by Marshall's company, all the sales stay in-house, accelerating recoupment.

Whether this incarnation will make its money back remains to be seen - the budget has inflated since last year and there's only two weeks left in the run - but Marshall remains confident. "We're a good tenant," he says of the show's future on Broadway. "We're a reliable recoup, pay reliable rent, and are good family entertainment. I think we're at the top of the list for a lot of theater owners looking for holiday tenants."
