5. Top Ten Of 2015
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dal Sanders MIMC
The Society of American Magicians
Past National President
I
am compiling an article (or maybe even several articles)
for The Magic Compass and I need your help. This will be
a "Top Ten" of 2015 list that deals with magic
similar to the one that Wayne Kawamoto did for about.com.
In
your opinion, what were the Top Ten magic events for 2015?
Please don't just say The SAM Convention or MAGIC Live or
anything general like that. What part, show or lecture of
the Convention made it memorable? If you can't think of
10 that's OK. This email is going out to several people.
Another
question is what were the Top Ten magic videos, shows or
films of 2015. If it was another ensemble effort (like Masters
of Illusion or Penn & Teller Fool Us or even America's
Got Talent) which magicians were the best.
While
we're at it, let's also name the top 10 magic acts.
What
else is there? Top Ten places to see magic?
At
this point I have only sent this to a few people (like you)
that I thought would give me thoughtful and interesting
answers. I look forward to hearing what you think..

6. Two Podcasts: Scott Hollingsworth On The Magic Island
And Billy
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with God Star
Two
Podcasts: Scott Hollingsworth on the Magic Island and Billy
- Kidd, Wizard Wars Woman
Last
week we celebrated Thanksgiving which took some of my attention
away from letting you know about the latest podcast on The
Magic Word. For those of you who subscribe or follow us
on Twitter (#MagicWordPod) or like us on Facebook (at http://Facebook.com/TheMagicWordPodcast)
or subscribe to the podcast, you already know about the
interview I had with Scott Hollingsworth, the Entertainment
Director of Houston's former Magic Island. It was a star
in the celestial sky of magic that burned brightly for 25
years until the hurricane ended its days in 2008. For those
of you who might have missed it, here is the lowdown. It's
never too late to catch up. Everything is always available
24/7 through the archives by using the simple "Search"
function on the website.
In
the podcast, Scott Hollingsworth talked about the history
of the building and some of the performers who worked there
over the years. It is a great step "back in time"
to learn about a great place that featured magic in a fashionable
environment for the public. On the website, there is a link
to a one hour video that is a guided tour of the Island
filmed in 2007. There is also a teaser trailer for Scott
Hollingsworth's upcoming DVD due out in January 2016. You
can watch the videos, see some exclusive photos, listen
to the podcast and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/265-scott-hollingsworth
In
the latest podcast released this week, we talk with Billy
Kidd. When Gazzo came through Houston for a lecture (and
to record a podcast), he brought along Billy. So I got two
for one recordings during that visit! Billy is a street
performer who might be better known to the general public
because of her association with Rick Lax's television show,
"Wizard Wars". Billy competed in the first year
then returned in the second (and final) season as one of
the "Wizards".
Billy
not only talks about Wizard Wars and how to work with the
TV cameras for the best effect, but also about being a woman
in magic. It is not easy being one of the extreme minority
in our craft. She suggests some do's and don'ts and advice
for all of her male counterparts.
You
can watch a video of her mentor, Nick Nickerson, see some
photos, read the blog, listen to the podcast and download
the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/266-billy-kid
Of
course, you can download, listen, and subscribe through
iTunes, Stitcher, Tunein and Feedpress. Next week will feature
a podcast with MAGIC Magazine editor, Stan Allen.
Be
sure to visit the Amazon Affiliate tab on the website (http://themagicwordpodcast.com/amazon-affiliate-page/)
and see if there are some items in the Amazon store you
want to buy for the holidays. By ordering through the affiliate

7. Conveying And Using Personality - #385 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com

http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
I posted recently on Facebook asking a simple question.
What is one of the best qualities or traits you feel makes
for a good magician and why? It was an interesting discussion
that brought about a lot of great answers and opinions.
However, one item kept coming up by many people. It is a
single word called "personality". It was so great
seeing so many folks give value to personality over other
things.
I
really think personality is so underrated in magic today.
People just simply forget the power it has in everything
we do. A trick is just a trick. The people want to like
you. If you take the same trick and place it in the hands
of someone who has and conveys personality and then someone
who does not, it looks like a totally different effect to
a lay audience. It really is that stunning to see happen.
Tricks
alone do not really mean anything by themselves. A trick
will not happen or work without the magician. Place a deck
of cards on a table and they are not going to start doing
an ACR routine by themselves. If they do, then start to
run real quick. It is YOU that makes the difference and
it is YOU that makes the magic happen. If this is the case,
then focus should be on you and not the prop or trick you
are presenting.
But
what is it about you? It is your personality that really
makes the audience enjoy the experience and enjoy you in
the process.
I
honestly feel that people want to be entertained way more
than they want to be fooled. People want to walk away having
had fun with the experience of what they just saw happen.
Take some of the best acts out there today. Take a look
at the ones that you really love to watch perform. It is
safe to say that you enjoy them because 95% of their act
is not solely based on the magic alone. There is more to
what they provide isn't there? The good entertainers are
that way because a majority of their act is interacting
with the audience in a comical entertaining way, engaging,
dialogue, connecting, talking. etc. It is the essence of
their personality that makes you enjoy what they do.
It
is interaction and expressing personality. It is taking
the audience on a journey and getting them laughing and
having fun instead of just seeking the WOW only.
I
think that is key. If you could take away the trick in any
performance, and safely say the routine is still entertaining,
then I think you have something. Take away the props and
the trick and then look at what that performer does. I can
safely say the entertainers that "get it" are
the ones who without any of these props, can still entertain
and audience and have them enjoying every minute of it.
This is the essence and importance of personality in magic.
There
is a quote that was shared to be by my good friend Dan Birch.
Dan said the quote goes like this. "If they walk away
saying remember the trick that the magician did, then I
have failed. But if they say remember the magician who did
that trick, then I have succeeded." I was so glad Dan
shared this with me because it got me thinking that it is
your personality that makes them remember you.
I think that is a key to developing a likeable character.
Some magicians try to focus so much on the trick only that
they are void of any personality at all. I want the audience
remembering me not my deck of cards.
No
one is saying not to have the tricks. What we are saying
is that the focus of any performance should not be on the
trick itself. The trick is just a prop. The focus should
be on personality and using that personality to truly take
the effect to an entertaining level. It is giving the audience
more to enjoy. You add personality into what you do and
I guarantee your audiences will thank you for it.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly
at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

I
was wondering if anyone from Perth had told you about two
tragic losses from there.
Cathy
Tulp, 47, otherwise known as Pinky the Clown passed away
unexpectedly. Known for her bright, cheerul costumes and
matching personality, she was a long time member of the
West Australian Society of Magicians.
Fred
deCampe, 104, passed away. A founding member of the West
Australian Society of Magicians, he was an avid designer
and builder of magic. He remained active in the club until
recent days. He once told the club he had seen Houdini perform
when he was a child and Houdini was in Australia.

14. J-Day!!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Mandy Davis (UK)
It
was that time of year again! It was J-Day!! I got up at
8 o'clock, which for me is very early on a Sunday, eager
to watch and learn some crazy magic.
After
a forty-minute train journey to Euston station I reached
The Magic Circle HQ joining onto a long queue of bubbling
YMC members prepared for another great day. I spent a small
amount of time inside socialising with fellow members before
going to the theatre. There, we had a warm welcome from
Kevin, which included a quick talk filling us in on the
superb line up ahead, a couple of "fantastics"
and a nice little video giving us a peek of what the day
would hold.
Then
we had our first lecture of the day, Dave Loosley. As a
regular lecturer at YMC workshops I knew to expect nothing
but good things and I wasn't wrong! In Dave's lecture there
was great, unique workable material. He opened with a trick
where a selected, signed card from a deck of red backed
Bicycles was then found in his back pocket - except the
back of the card was now blue! The method was genius! Dave
then moved on to show us a way to perform a crazy, casual
prediction trick using just a pack of cards and a lottery
ticket! The last trick was personally my favourite - a set
of cards, with various sweets on the faces, had a tuck shop
logo on the backs. One card was selected from the pack.
It showed fruit pastilles, yet the prediction shown was
a pack of skittles! The trick moved on. The skittles pack
was opened and just a few were poured out into a glass on
the table. Dave asked the spectator, who had chosen the
fruit pastilles, to hold the packet. The spectator then
poured out the remaining contents which, to everyone's amazement,
was fruit pastilles!
As
things had started late, we moved swiftly on to the close
up competition where we saw six finalists from eighteen
entries earlier in the year.
Amos
Wollen based his act on Dr Who. With the theme music playing
Amos did tricks with cards and biscuits which was great
fun. Dean Leavy had a nice manner and was very good with
his assistants, making them at ease. He performed some coin
appearances and disappearances using a small box. Several
card tricks followed, some with regular decks and some with
cards depicting rabbits, carrots and hats. Joshua Hennes
had good performing skills which were shown well with his
card routines which included a high tech computer which
proved to be a Lidl plastic bag! Callum McClure was professional
and skillful as he performed coin and thimble appearances
and vanishes, Coins Through Table, changes to Chinese coins
and coin from Sharpie. Joe Olyade also started with coins
to music, the last transforming to a deck of cards! He then
performed a card restoration and a triumph routine.
When all the talented close up finalists were finished it
was time for lunch and our first visit to the dealers. I
was excited to go and see them - Wayne Fox, Big Blind Media,
Kaymar Magic and Alakazam !
After
lunch the stage competition commenced. Fletcher Ransberry
bound onto the stage and used the theme of a French restaurant
for his act. His well-rehearsed accent charmed us as he
performed a bottle production, then turned its contents,
water, into wine while pouring it in and out of a magazine!
He continued with frog caviar - the production of blue sponges
from his mouth ending with a frog! A flash of his old Tommy
Cooper act came through during his bottle and glass routine;
then he used all kinds of ingredients and a dove pan to
produce toffees to bribe the judges!
Callum
McClure gave us the Tommy Wonder version of the Hold Up
trick, coin productions, Coins to Glass, Coins to Pocket,
Frances Menotti's Shuffled Words routine, and a final card
trick involving cards in two wine glasses.
Billy
Roche Menezes gave us a silent act, using Junior Masterchef
as his theme. He had a table full of props and did all kinds
of tricks including a rope to hanky, a salt vanish and pour.
Billiard balls represented eggs for manipulations, ending
with one ball becoming a real egg. After many food related
tricks he ended with the appearance of a cake.
It
was Theo Mellor's first J-Day and he spoke about holidays.
We saw sand and stones from his shoe, some ring and rope
moves and a final trick based on bingo where the whole audience
played along.
Oliver
Paice's funny opening line set the tone of his act. He used
a spectator's twenty pound note for a Russian Roulette routine
- which failed! He also performed a take away meal prediction,
the note being found inside the food container.
The
final act was Luke Oseland. This silent act contained a
colour changing tie,
After
a Dealers' room break, it was time to go back to the Theatre
to watch something I had been looking forward to all day!
The President of The Magic Circle, and YMC, Scott Penrose
was to be interviewed by illusionist and popular podcaster,
Richard Young! The interview included extremely valuable
information such as how Scott got into magic and some awesome
advice! My favourite thing was a fascinating story about
how, one day, he was looking through a very popular magic
book when he came across an extraordinarily complicated
goldfish illusion which had not been performed more than
a maximum of five times publicly! It took him months to
construct and when it came to the performance in The Magic
Circle's theatre, it earned him his first standing ovation.
When
Scott's interview was over we moved straight onto Ex-YMC
member and co-owner of Vanishing Inc Magic, Andi Gladwin.
His lecture was very relaxed, casual and was very much dictated
by what we wanted to learn so he ended up teaching us a
load of cool slights and revelations.
Following
Andi was our last chance to see the dealers and I spent
my time interviewing Jamie Raven which was amazing. You
can read the results on page number. I
The
break ended and we went back up to the theatre for the awards
ceremony followed by the
spectacular Gala Show.
