A major highlight for Michele and me this year was to attend the 32nd NZ International Magicians Convention held in Wellington. In our opinion this would have to be the best New Zealand Magician's convention we have attended.

Congratulations must go to Nopera Whitley (Convention President) and his dedicated Convention Committee: Bruce Stokell, Paul Bates, Nichola Prokop, Anton van Helden and Sean Dougherty for organizing this fabulous convention.

For those New Zealand magicians that didn't attend, you missed something really special.

Magician Criss Angel Cancels Las Vegas Shows to be with Son diagnosed with Cancer.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, famous magician Criss Angel said he had to cancel his shows in Las Vegas due to "a family emergency".

"In light of a family emergency the news I was going to announce this weekend will be postponed. Thank you," he wrote to fans.

According to Today, Angel flew to Australia after learning that his son was diagnosed with leukemia. His son, Johnny Chrisstopher Sarantakos, who will be turning two soon, has started undergoing chemotherapy in Australia.

The "Mindfreak" magician also took to Twitter and shared a photo of him holding his son in his arms with the caption "Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers. Criss."

The outlet noted that many fans were unaware that Angel had a son, but they sent their prayers and love to show support for the levitating magician. His Twitter photo immediately gained thousands of favorites, as fans continued to support Angel's journey toward his son's recovery.

On Monday morning, Angel updated his Twitter fans on Johnny's condition saying, "4th day chemo-Shaunyl,Johnny&I can't thank u enough for the overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers&support," with a photo of Johnny in a hospital bed cradled between Angel and his son's mother, Shaunyl Benson.

In another photo on Instagram, the illusionist posted a photo of him carrying Johnny, as the cancer-stricken toddler looked at the camera with a tiny smile that implied how his tiny body still fights for hope.

According to Entertainment Tonight Online, Angel's canceled Las Vegas shows are part of his "BeLIEve" tour. The outlet also notes that while this is the first time the magician has canceled his shows in the past seven years, the shows will resume at the Luxor on Nov. 4.

Johnny was diagnosed with acute lymphobastic leukemia, a type of cancer that is common in children wherein the white blood cells supposedly developing in the bone marrow are affected.

4. An American Magician Takes His Tricks To China
--------------------------------------------
Article forward on by Peter Grey (US)

Los Angeles Times

Magician Franz Harary is driving through the Las Vegas of China, trying to remember the last time he did a show in the United States. "Three years ago, maybe?" he says tentatively. "I think it was some Christmas thing. Or maybe it was an Indian casino."

As he pulls into the parking lot of a new $3.2-billion casino resort called Studio City, the gate attendant gives him a blank stare. "Do you have a pass?" he asks.

Harary is used to it. Though he's made the space shuttle disappear, levitated Michael Jackson and filled scores of stadium shows across Asia, the 53-year-old has neither the debonair air of a David Copperfield nor the Goth theatricality of a Criss Angel to mark him as a celebrity offstage. His L.A. publicist even touts him with the somewhat awkward brag: "The most famous magician on planet Earth is a guy you've never heard of."

"My name's in the computer," Harary tells the guard with not a hint of annoyance. "Have a look."

But now the Hollywood-based illusionist can just point to the Studio City marquee. On Tuesday, the casino opened Franz Harary's House of Magic, a permanent, $40-million venue with a rotating cast of magicians.

Milt Larsen, founder of Hollywood's famed Magic Castle private club, says the scale of the project is "very unusual," with nothing quite like it attempted since Caesars shut down its $35-million Magical Empire in Vegas more than a decade ago.

With room for 300 patrons per show (tickets: $50) and plans for up to four performances daily, Harary's House of Magic aims to help Macau do what Sin City did 15 to 20 years ago: start shedding its seedy image and add more family-friendly entertainment to diversify the city's customer base.

A slowdown in the Chinese economy, a corruption crackdown that has chilled high-roller visits and government limits on the number of gaming tables have also added pressure on Macau casinos to branch out. And with six new casino resorts opening in the former Portuguese colony in the next two years, properties are keen to add distinctive elements that will distinguish them from competitors.

"That's all good for me - it means Franz is more important," says Harary, a self-deprecating Michigan native who doesn't drink or smoke and immediately apologizes for sounding "freaking egotistical." But then he adds with a grin: "A lot of the guys in the really expensive suits are catering to my wishes compared to even a year ago."…….

The key to any success in magic is the ability to learn and to continue to grow. You never stop growing. Always evaluate, elevate and apply what you learn every time out.

One big key is "Listen To Your Audience". They alone will tell you what they like if you are willing enough to listen to them. Always take note during and after every performance and really find out what got the reactions and what made people laugh or clap. This self-evaluation is critical because you will often find that what you think is a great part is totally different then what the audience reacts to.

You must realize that your shows are geared to a particular audience and market. Each audience and each market has its own criteria. In order to do this well, you need the ability to gauge what works and what does not and evolve the show and it's routines over time.

Being a success in any market means having the ability to adapt, learn and make changes as you go along. Each gig you perform at should be a learning experience. This is how you grow and how you ensure you are giving the very best to the clients each time out.

I always try to make it a habit of writing down everything that happens right, wrong or any successful tips and get it all on paper or recorded. It helps me grow and not make any of the same mistakes. It helps me also to remember what went right and what happy accidents I want to build into the show.

Each day after the event I list everything I learned, things I can do better, stuff I want to remember to pack, things that worked out great, things that did not work out great etc. These really need to be studied so that the performer grows as he or she does the markets they work each year.

If I constantly write stuff down, I am learning as I go and can build upon my knowledge at the same time. If I cannot solve an issue, this reminds me to seek out my peers in search for an answer.

If I improve every time out, I am making myself that much more valuable to my clients. If I take notes, I often times can come up with great and new ideas that adds value to them and more income for myself.

As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com. I would love to hear from you.

7. The Magic Word Podcast - Project Alpha With Mike Edwards
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

This week on The Magic Word Podcast, we take our traveling microphone to Phoenix, Arizona where we chat over lunch with Mike Edwards, one of the two young men who were at the epicenter of Project Alpha about 35 years ago. For those not familiar with this subject, Wikipedia explains it this way, "Project Alpha was an elaborate hoax that began in 1979 and ended with its disclosure in 1981. It was orchestrated by the stage magician and skeptic James Randi. It involved planting two fake psychics, Steve Shaw (now better known as Banachek) and Michael Edwards, into a paranormal research project."

In this podcast, Mike Edwards tells what led up to this project and how he got involved. He also tells about how Steve "Banachek" Shaw came into the project and how the two of them worked together to work on this Project. There are several interesting stories that Mike shares in this podcast including one surprising revelation (at least it was to me) at the end of the podcast. I have talked with Banachek many times about his participation in the Project but I had never heard the story from the other "psychic's" perspective. I think you will enjoy this as it is the perfect lead-in to the Halloween weekend.

You can watch the videos, see some photos, read the blog, get some great links, listen online and download the MP3 file all at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/261-project-alpha-with-mike-edwards

In case you missed last week's podcast with Anthony Barnhart, Ph.D., it is still online (along with the previous hundreds of podcasts and blogs). It was a fascinating chat about the psychology and science of magic. You can go there directly at this link: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/260-tony-barnhart

9. Broken Wand Peter D'Arcy
--------------------------------------------
Message by Quentin Reynolds (UK)

The funeral of the late Peter D'Arcy (Peter John Syrett, July 1927 - 29th September 2015) took place on Friday, 23rd October in Leathehead, England.

I first encountered him through his book Children's Parties a Speciality, published by Goodliffe. Two complete one hour themed shows were detailed, one about the house of The Little Crooked Man, and the other a box of large children's building blocks which contained tricks. At the end of the show the bricks were reassembled to from a castle. The portcullis was raised to reveal a live rabbit. Much to the chagrin of my mother, I took over part of the kitchen table for a couple of months as I made up this show.

Peter was a regular at the British Ring conventions for many years, often helping as a steward and went on many of the Repro cruises. Five years ago, after his partner John died, Peter moved to a retirement home in Chorley Wood.

Besides being a Gold Star member of the Inner Magic Circle, Peter was a top Toastmaster and active member of the Concert Artists Association.

10. The Magic Word Podcast - The Science Of Magic With Dr. Tony Barnhart
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star

Leading up to Halloween, this week on The Magic Word we talk with Anthony Barnhart, PhD about his psychological study on the Science of Magic. "Magic Tony" (as he likes to be called) started his study while at Northern Arizona University. His study focuses on how the brain works and why "we are tricked". I learned of his work while I was attending the 2013 I.B.M. convention in Phoenix, Arizona. Being the hoarder, I mean, "collector" I am, I recently ran across the brochure I had kept since then and contacted him to find out the results of his work.

As it happened, first of all, I found that Tony had moved from Phoenix and now resides in Kenosha, Wisconsin where he is a professor at Carthage College. Second of all, I found out that his work is far from complete and he did not get enough volunteers in Arizona to validate any hypothesis. So, he is still at work and hoping to complete the project and write the paper soon. He needs a good "core sample" of magicians to complete his study. He hopes that now he lives closer to Chicago, Illinois and a much larger population of magicians, that he will be able to draw more prestidigitators and complete his study.

If you live in, around or near the Chicago area, or plan to visit there soon, then perhaps you can make time to help Tony with completing this project. It could have far reaching implications in our magical world and give us insights into the brain that we haven't seen before…and you could be part of it!

To learn more, listen to the podcast at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/260-tony-barnhart And, of course, you can download it from iTunes. If you are an Apple user and listen to The Magic Word through iTunes and you are not in the financial position to be a financial supporter of the podcast, then you can help by giving The Magic Word Podcast a five star rating and leaving a positive comment. It will really help!

11. Japan Magic 2016
--------------------------------------------
Message by Paul Critelli (US)

March 16, 2016 - departure for Japan

March 27, 2016 - departure back to the USA

What if . . .

. . . I told you that you could go to a three-day Close-up Magic convention in Tokyo, Japan and all it would cost would be about $US3500?

You'd tell me to get back on my medication.

But . . . what If I told you that for about that price you would

Spend a total of eleven days in Japan
See some incredible sights of Tokyo by day and night (Magic bars and plenty more . . . )
Take some day tours to fantastic towns and sights outside of Tokyo (either by the fastest and most comfortable trains in the world or private coach)
Spend one night in an authentic Japanese inn (Ryokan)
Stay in incredibly clean and comfortable 3 - 4 stars hotels in Tokyo
Dine on some of the best food in the world at a Magic party and award show that is the climax to three-days of a Close-up Magic convention that YOU will have the opportunity to PARTICIPATE in as you have NEVER participated in any other Magic convention
Meet some world-famous Magical superstars
Become friends with people from Japan and a few other places called "the rest of the world" Have the time of your life . . .

Well, now you might say,

"Tell me more, Japan Lover!"

OK, The Japan Cup wants YOU to attend. The Japan Cup also knows that you MIGHT have a significant other who may only want to see some of the shows and attend the Award Party (believe me, this is a MUST GO TO event!). There is a slight difference between the "Full Convention Attendee" (show, lectures, workshops, surprises like you will not believe, the Award Party) and the "Show and Party Only Attendee." The price difference is about $100.

The rest of the package is a chance to experience the beauty of Japan, the wonder of its culture and history, and the hospitality and friendliness of the Japanese people.

Once you visit Japan, You Will Be Back.

So, we have put together a Japan Magic 2016 Package that is for the casual traveler who is on a budget, likes new and wonderful and safe adventures, and does not need a minute-by-minute schedule! Of course, there will be tours for the small group (we are looking at under 12 people), but if you are like I am, you love surprises and the freedom to NOT do some things. We got you covered, but we also predict you will LOVE every minute of what we have to offer.

This is a first for me, but the real professional behind this is Sakura Nakazato - THE best travel agent that I have ever met. Believe me, even if you don't take us up on this offer, call her in the future for ANY and ALL of your international travel needs. She loves Magicians and she likes to do favors for me! I am very lucky!

So, IF you have any interest in this, PLEASE email me as soon as possible.

Do we have all the details and final costs down? No.

Do we need to have SOME idea of people who are very interested in this great trip now? Yes.

We are looking at some deadlines for booking what we need to book by the early part of December - flights (costs vary from $1300 to $1500 depending on where you live in the USA) - and we would have to have some deposits in.

There are many other things I would run by you, but this is a first notification. If Japan Magic 2016 works, OUTSTANDING! If we don't have enough interest (and that is a few as 6 or so), then we tried.

Contact me for more information and talk.

Thank you,

Paul Critelli - MagicPaul@aol.com

Known throughout the world as an elegant and classical performer, Haruo Shimada has firmly established himself as one of the most successful magicians of all time.

Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1940, young Shimada became interested in magic after seeing one of the Tenyo magic counters in a local store.

Shimada was fascinated by the art and took his newfound hobby to the level of earnest studying and practicing. Subsequently, he began his magic career at age thirteen as a demonstrator for the Japanese magic firm Tenyo. Beginning his performing career at the age of 18 with his act featuring billiard ball magic, he worked in many venues and made several Television appearances, and also a royal command performance for Hirohito and his family.

Shortly thereafter, inspired by seeing Channing Pollock in the 1962 Italian film "European Nights," he developed a dove act which became quite successful. Shimada left Japan in 1965 to tour Australia and Mexico. While appearing in Australia, he met his wife Deanna; after their marriage she joined the act and they toured Australia for the next few years, also doing considerable television work.

Later, they toured through over twenty countries, and did a television series running several months while in Mexico. They moved to the United Sates in 1970 where, in addition to the dove act, Shimada premiered an act in traditional Japanese wardrobe; this featured the production of several multi-colored parasols and fans of various kinds. Shimada wanted to add the art of stage illusion and theatrics to his repertoire, and in 1975, he and Deanna premiered his extravagant Dragon Act. His Dragon Act proved to be a crowd-pleasing spectacular routine in which after producing a multitude of colorful parasols, he battles gigantic 60 foot long fire-breathing dragons in a mythical tale set against a spectacular kabuki theater backdrop.

Like the dove act, it has proven quite successful; Shimada and Deanna have performed it in venues from Las Vegas to Paris to London and throughout the world. Up to this point, his act had been done in Western-style costume, a modified tail suit. Shimada decided that to satisfy his repeat customers, a second, Eastern-costumed and -styled act would have to be developed.

Shimada who performed as Liberace's opening act at the Hilton Las Vegas in 1982. For five years, he appeared as the guest star of the Riviera Hotel's "Splash" where he featured his Dove Act. He has appeared on the tonight show with Johnny Carson four times and has also worked with several celebrities, including Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett and Bill Cosby. His popularity garnered him four television specials in Japan which were filmed around him in 1989. Also at Magicpalooza, the late night Friday event is "Sideshow". Witness our eccentric group of performers as our guide takes you around the hotel ballroom where various platform stages display sword swallowers, fire eaters, glass walkers and more.

Free cotton candy and popcorn for all. Hurry, hurry, hurry...step right up and register for Magicpalloza!
