2. World Premier Of Lance Burton's Magic Theme Film "Billy
Topit"
--------------------------------------------
Message forwarded on by Alfred Hayes (Aust)
I
am getting a lot of questions from people on social media
about when and where they can see the movie. Those conversations
are happening now. In fact I started hearing from different
film distribution companies the moment we released the trailer
for Billy Topit.
Apparently there is a good amount of interest out there
for a Magic-Comedy-Adventure film! Rest assured everyone
who wants to see the film will get to see it, eventually.
As soon as I have something to announce you will hear about
it. Everyone is welcome to follow me on Facebook and Twitter.
Best regards,
Lance Burton

3. The World Premiere Of Billy Topit Master Magician!
--------------------------------------------
Message by Lance Burton forward on by Alfred Hayes
Lance
Burton's "Billy Topit Master Magician" World Movie
Premiere September 24th at Brenden Theaters in The Palms.
Event and Limited Release to Benefit Local Charities with
Red Carpet starting at 4 P.M. and Curtain Speech at 5:30
P.M.
Las
Vegas (July 13th, 2015) - Produced and Directed by Lance
Burton with screenplay by Lance and Michael Goudeau, "Billy
Topit Master Magician" is not a biography of Lance
Burton's life but a fictional character in a fictional setting
that happens to be set in Lance's adopted hometown of Las
Vegas. "The one thing Billy and I share in common is
this, we both love magic and we both love Las Vegas. I guess
that is two things actually" stated Lance.
The
independent comedy took over five years from idea to theatrical
release and has been Lance's labor of love since retiring
his stage show in 2010 at the Monte Carlo Resort. The inspiration
for the movie harkens back to Lance's childhood. "When
I was a kid I saw Bill Bixby in a TV series called "The
Magician." I loved that show. Through the years there
have been many films and TV shows with magician characters
and some were quite good. I just felt that I could bring
something to the table that was genuine. Something based
in reality. I didn't want to do the stereotypical mysterious
magician character. That's why Billy Topit is a struggling
magician, even though he is very skilled."
Lance
has a long history in the television and movie industry
from his appearances on "The Tonight Show" with
Johnny Carson to starring in his own network TV specials
to being Magic Consultant on the blockbuster movie "Oz
the Great and Powerful," starring James Franco. "I
was fortunate enough to receive lessons from Lance Burton...
and I got to have him as my private teacher for weeks, which
was great. I look at myself on the stage and there are certain
flourishes where I carry myself that definitely come from
Lance, who is just a great guy and a great teacher and great
magician," stated Franco in an interview for "Oz."
The
cast of "Billy Topit Master Magician" is full
of many of Lance's friends, most of which are magicians,
jugglers, comedians, as well as actors. Louie Anderson,
Mac King, Robin Leach, as well as, Criss Angel all make
cameo appearances. "When my dear friend Lance asked
me to make a cameo in his movie (Billy Topit Master Magician),
I was honored. When
I heard my scene was a twisted nightmare - I thought perfect
- I'm right at home," said Criss Angel.
While
there might be a nightmare scene in the movie Lance went
on to say, "This is a family friendly movie that I
hope will connect with people all over the world. It is
a love letter to Las Vegas. When I am no longer around,
I hope Billy Topit will still be inspiring people to visit
our city. I am also honored to be able to donate all of
the funds raised by the World Premiere and Limited Engagement
run at Brenden Theaters to three charities close to my heart,
Variety The Children's Charity of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas
Shriners and Nevada SPCA. I hope to spread a little magic
around the world with "Billy Topit Master Magician"
and here at home."

5. The Magic Word Podcast - Larry Wilson and John Archer
--------------------------------------------
Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
Larry
Wilson has been committed.
Let
me clarify that statement.
Larry
Wilson is passionate about saving the local library in Reno,
Nevada and he is committed to make that happen. Last year
he formed a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible, nonprofit organization
called the Education Renaissance of Nevada. The purpose
was to raise funds to offset budgetary cuts that would have
resulted in reduced personnel and operating hours of the
local library in Reno. But more than just trying to raise
money, he wants to raise awareness of the importance of
keeping the library open and available to everyone.
So,
in addition to providing funds, Larry produced a magic festival
last year in Reno that drove people into the library and
created a tremendous amount of interest and "buzz"
among youth and adults. The festival brought in some of
the top professional names in magic and offered their shows
for free to the public.
Larry
is again producing "Spellbinders" the second (hopefully)
annual FREE magic festival in Reno from October 20-24, 2015.
If you happen to be in the Reno area around these dates,
then you need to make it a point to see some of these free
shows that will feature Lennart Green, Bob Sheets, Shoot
Ogawa, Richard Turner, Stephen Bargatze, Jade, Christopher
Hart, James Dimmare, Kyle and Mystie Knight, Rob Zabrecky
and Larry Wilson. Wow! With a line-up like that, and for
it to be FREE, wouldn't it be worth your time and money
to support this effort and keep this event free? Of course
it is.
You
can help support the effort by buying some "swag"
at: http://fundspellbinders.com And even if you cannot attend,
you might want to get in on some of these unique, one-of-a-kind
items. Check it out.
Larry
talks about this festival on this week's podcast on The
Magic Word. But more than that, the first three quarters
of our chat delves deeply into comedy, script writing, and
keeping "old" material versus writing more topical,
fresh patter.
You
can watch some videos, read the blog, view some photos,
hear the podcast and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/258-larry-wilson
Of course you can download and listen through your favorite
platform or podcatcher like iTunes, Stitcher, Feedpress
or Tunein.
Also
this past week, most of you are aware that the Genii Convention
took place in Orlando, Florida. I was unable to attend this
year's event, but I had my own 'Roving Reporter" there
on the scene. Fred King, a "Friend of The Magic Word",
sent in a nice little chat with John Archer, one of the
performers and lecturers at the convention. This was posted
earlier this week on The Magic Word. If you are a subscriber
to The Magic Word, then you are already aware of this special
podcast. If you haven't yet subscribed, then it's easy.
Just visit http://themagicwordpodcast.com/subscribe-to-the-magic-word/
and get on board.
For
this special episode on John Archer, you can read the blog,

6. What Makes Children Laugh? - #378 - Kyle Peron
--------------------------------------------
Message by Kyle Peron (US)
magic4u02@aol.com
http://www.kylekellymagic.com
http://www.kpmagicproducts.com
As a family oriented performer I have often wondered exactly
what is it that makes children laugh? What is it that they
respond to that generates this rush of laughter and good
times? It is interesting to research and I found out things
I never knew before. If a magician understands what makes
children laugh, then they can apply it to the routines they
create. After all we are entertainers first. So allow me
to dive in a bit on this subject and share some of my findings.
The
first item that caught my eye when I first started researching
this topic was about the relationship between how often
children laugh and how often adults laugh. It does not take
a rocket scientist to realize that children laugh much more
frequently than adults do. But why is this? I found out
a statistic that really shocked me. Children laugh on average
of 400
times in a course of a day where as adults tend to laugh
around 25. That is a staggering difference. So what is it
that causes this laughter? I wanted to list some of the
things I found through research as well as through my own
personal experience.
-
Treating an Object Like Something Else: It is an important
to realize that children live in a fantasy world at a young
age. Everything to them is magical. Turning on a light is
by magic. But often times they also start showing at an
early age the idea of pretending. You see this a lot in
their play. One object can suddenly become another object.
This can be used by us
entertainers. Because the child does this naturally, having
one object become something else is funny to them.
-
Calling an Object or Person by a Different Name: As children
start to talk they become very vocal. They use their new
found communication skills and start to use that in their
humor as well. If we know that children early on are fascinated
with speech and with wanting to verbally tell you things,
we can use this to our advantage. Children themselves will
often naturally call something by a different name and find
doing so hilarious.
-
Name Play: This is a concept that as children get older
and start using their new found vocal skills, they like
to name play with the sounds of names. This could mean a
word like Boat could be Boat, coat, soak, toat, zoat etc.
Even if the words are not real words, the sound of the new
silly word is funny to them. As magicians, we can use this
in our performances and possibly create funny magical words
that play off this idea.
-
Made up Sentences: This goes along with the vocal concepts
mentioned above. The idea is as children develop their skills
with words, they often like to make up sentences that really
have no meaning to them. To children, this is exploring
and having fun with the new tool of communication. As a
magician I can use this idea in the storylines I create
or the magic words I have the children say. If I know that
this makes children laugh, I can adapt my routines to use
this principle.
-
Things That Don't Belong Together: As children develop in
their learning capacity, they start to associate the words
they say with physical objects that represent them. Saying
cat now is not just a sound but they know what a cat is
and what the cats do and the sounds they make. What is interesting
is that children now find this new found power as empowering
to them. If a magician can get something wrong that the
child knows is right, they feel
empowered to correct the magician and they also find it
funny. If I state that a cat goes MOOOO, the children will
laugh and want to correct me.
-
Physical Comedy: No one quite knows for sure why it is that
children tend to laugh at things that physically happen
to the magician or anyone. If I accidentally hit myself
on the head with a funny magic wand, children will find
it funny. If I suddenly get my finger caught in the zipper
of a change bag, kids will laugh. I think part of this stems
from their own play world and from cartoons they see on
TV. Knowing physical comedy is funny to a child can open
the doors to possibilities in your own routines.
There
are certainly a lot more that I have come across in both
research and personal experience that I could share with
you. However, I will leave it at this for now. This should
give you a good idea of not only what makes children laugh
but some of the reasoning behind it. If we know what makes
children laugh, then we can strive to be better children's
performers.
As always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

--------------------------------------------
Message by Jeff McBride (US)
Do
you wish you could mesmerize your audience? That you could
perform a trick that not only fooled them, but felt as powerful
to them as it looked?
I
have joined up with renowned hypnotist Richard Nongard to
create a proven approach to integrating magic and hypnotic
patter that we call Hypnotic Wizardry and we want you to
have free access to the highlights of this series! It literally
creates a fusion between hypnosis, magic and mentalism and
we have been teaching it at the mystery school in live classes
for two years.
Do
you want to learn some of the same routines we have been
teaching at the Mystery School in Las Vegas, but learn them
today and without a plane ticket to Vegas? You can! The
way to begin is to get instant access right now to these
four 5 minute highlight videos http://clicks.aweber.com/y/ct/?l=9l.9E&m=3jvEsEJMo1jCk3w&b=XcVbpHlxCs1jFQ7pg6rCCw
and
begin to learn how to really create something unique in
your shows.

10. Beginner's Guide To Comedy Writing Aimed At Magicians
--------------------------------------------
Message by James Ward jwemerald@btinternet.com (UK)
I've
just published a beginner's guide to comedy writing aimed
at magicians, entitled Sleightly Amusing. It's available
as a Kindle download via Amazon and also as a paperback
(Amazon and/or Lulu publishing).
Sleightly
Amusing is a beginner's guide to comedy writing aimed specifically
at the magician. Written by Magic Circle member, James Ward,
the book is divided into two sections. In the first, Jamesoutlines
a number of gag-writing formulae which should quickly get
your comedy writing up and running. The second section contains
over 400 jokes, patter and bits of business written and
compiled largely with the magician and/or magical compere
in mind.
Sleightly
Amusing concludes with a useful bibliography of comedy writing
books to take your gags to a higher level if you feel suitably
inspired. James is a published author, in both fiction and
magical fields (having contributed to Abra, The Magician,
Mystery, The Budget, The Linking Ring and two editions of
Mind Blasters). As well as scripting gags for, among
others, Freddie Starr, June Whitfield, Roy Hudd, Radio 2,
Radio 4, the World Service, BBC1, ITV, S4C (Wales) and German
television, James has performed stand-up comedy across Yorkshire
and at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Sleightly
Amusing (approx. 80 pages) is available as a paperback priced
£5.99 (Amazon) and only £4.79 at www.lulupublishing.com.
It's
also available as a Kindle download (at £3.99), either
to your e-reader or via your free desktop/tablet/smartphone
application (for which, see, in the UK, for example:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/digital/fiona/kcp-landing-page).

12. FCM Announces 2016 Convention Info
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (US)
The
Fellowship of Christian Magicians (FCM) has announced details
for its 2016 International Convention. It will move back
to July (25-29), so mark your calendars. It will still be
in Nashville, Tennessee, and on the campus of Trevecca University,
as it was this year. But next year it will be held entirely
within the spacious Trevecca Community Church on the campus.
The theme for 2016 will be: "A Year of Second Chances,"
based on the Biblical verse 2 Corinthians 5:17.
The
emphasis throughout the five days of the convention is learning,
teaching, and sharing the performing arts of magic, clowns,
ventriloquism, juggling, puppets, face painting, balloons,
and drama/story-telling/chalk art. Of course the emphasis
is on applying each of these to spreading the gospel. There
are workshops, nightly shows, hospital visits, inspirational
talks, exhibitors, and even a flea market and an auction
to sell your unwanted things and stuff.

more information about the international Fellowship of Christian
Magicians, go to their Website, www.fcm.org
