Congratulations to the Canterbury Society of Magicians New
Zealand on celebrating their 75th Anniversary in September.
Our
very best wishes for a long and happy marriage go to Joshua
Jay and his new wife Anna. Joshua wowed New Zealand magicians
back when he was seventeen years old with his lecture of
his unique close up magic and has gone onto a great life
in magic, just like we knew he would. (see item 9)

2. Spellbinders International Festival Of Magic In Reno
--------------------------------------------
Message by Larry Wilson
Executive Director
Our
nonprofit festival of magic, Spellbinders, takes place again
this month in Reno, Nevada. A lot of people asked why we
didn't have Spellbinders merchandise last year. (The short
answer: it never occurred to me.) So we incorporated that
stuff into a crowdfunding campaign this year and here it
is-- https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/keep-spellbinders-festival-of-magic-free/.
I
promise it will make you laugh. And if enough people visit
and donate it will enable us to keep Spellbinders happening
every year.
I'd like to ask you to do two things for me
Please
donate (at any level-- the perks are so cool,) and;
Please
send it to everyone you know who loves magic (doesn't that
cover just about everybody?)
You
know a whole different group of people than I do. Send it
to people who have a sense of humor. Some of the biggest
names in magic have contributed once-in-a-lifetime experiences
as perks
VIP
Ultimate Copperfield-- https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/keep-spellbinders-festival-of-magic-free/contributions/new/#/contribute?perk_amt=2500&perk_id=3139586
Private Lesson with Pendragon-- https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/keep-spellbinders-festival-of-magic-free/contributions/new/#/contribute?perk_amt=1750&perk_id=3139713
Lunch with Lance Burton-- https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/keep-spellbinders-festival-of-magic-free/contributions/new/#/contribute?perk_amt=1250&perk_id=3138584
The
list goes on and on.
Please
help us keep this groovy thing alive!

3. October Linking Ring Features Two I.B.M. Past Presidents
--------------------------------------------
Message by Dennis Schick (US)
October
Linking Ring features two I.B.M. past presidents
It
is common for past presidents of many organizations at all
levels to disappear and drop out, probably burning out.
But, there are others who are more committed to the organization
and continue to participate and keep on giving, long after
their presidencies. The October 2015 issue of The Linking
Ring highlights not one, but TWO of the latter. Past I.B.M.
International President Dr. Richard Mossey is featured on
the cover and in a nice profile inside, by Lynn Miner. Also
featured is another PIP, Dr. William Wells, by Dr. Steven
Schlanger. And these are only two of the special and regular
features this month.
In
addition to the two biographical profiles of Dr. Mossey
and Dr. Wells, there is continuing coverage of the I.B.M.
Jacksonville, Florida convention. Becki and Bill Wells review
the Lance Burton Teen Seminar, which was conducted immediately
before the convention began on Tuesday; and there is a report
on the Annual Business Meeting.
By
now you probably have already heard about what Lance Burton
has been up to since he retired from performing in 2010.
He has been producing, writing, and directing a movie, "Billy
Topit, Master Magician." The world premiere of the
movie was September 24 in Las Vegas, and Bill Wells gives
us a first-hand review of the premiere and the movie.
Terry
Evanswood. Veteran magician in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee,
tells a fascinating story about "A little journey to
the grave of Maro the Great" (Walter Truman Best).
He took a personal interest in Maro's career, and especially
in the three-and-a-half ton boulder on Maro's grave in St.
Charles, Illinois. This tale of commitment is well worth
a read.
Our
regular columnists bring you "Marketing Magic,"
by Kent Cummins ("A dozen magic steps to marketing");
"Polishing the Rings," by Skip Way ("Links
and Rings"); "The London Eyes," by Peter
Scarlett (who questions why a Brit won America's Got Talent);
"The Therapy of Magic" by Scott Hood ("Magic
helps physical therapy"); and "Cutting Up Jackpots"
by Bev Bergeron ("Jack Pyle, one of the top unknown
magicians").
Regarding
tricks: The monthly Parade came from Ring 41. There are
eleven effects submitted by Ring 41 members. Other trick
columns include: "The Card Corner," by Mike Powers
(who presents "Transiversary" by Keith Randolph;
"Numismagic" by Jean-Emmanuel Franzis, who turns
the column over to Bill Wells and Malcolm Campbell's "Rip
it Up;" "Simple Diversions" by Andrew Woo
("52-on-1 to Go"); "The Expert at the Tech
Table" by Jeff Prace, who gives us "Treasurer,"
created by Chris Beason; "Situationally Yours"
by Chris Beason ("Disintegration"); and "Auto-magic"
by Michael Breggar ("Without you, they're just tricks").
In
this month's "Hocus in Focus," experts bring us
eleven reviews of new magic books, DVDs and tricks. Of course
members of the International Brotherhood of Magicians receive
the magazine as part of their membership. For more information,
go to www.magician.org.

Message by Scott Wells, M.I.M.C. with Gold Star
We
complete our time in Texas after the Texas Association of
Magicians (T.A.O.M.) annual convention by winding down at
the riverside home of Trixie Bond (now Past President of
the T.A.O.M.). Trixie and I are joined by Suzanne the Magician
and Jay Scott Berry and Past International President of
the I.B.M., Don Wiberg, as we talk about what makes magic
memorable. We talk about magic moments in our acts and the
creative process.
The
first half of this podcast was originally broadcast on my
Spreaker.com podcast channel. But since TheMagicWordPodcast.com
has about 2,000 more subscribers, I thought that most of
you have probably not heard our conversation. And for those
dozen or so of you who already heard that broadcast, the
second half is completely new and is additional content
that carries on the conversation where we left off when
my half hour of time on Spreaker.com was cut. To paraphrase
what Paul Harvey used to say, now you can hear "the
rest of the story."
You
can watch some videos, read the blog, view some photos,
hear the podcast and download the MP3 file at: http://themagicwordpodcast.com/scottwellsmagic/257-magic-chat-at-the-chateau-du-magique
Of course you can download and listen through your favorite

Have
you ever had a situation where you are at a birthday party
gig and you have the kids all seated and engaged in the
show. It is going great and all of a sudden the doorbell
rings and in comes Aunt Betsy.
Aunt
Betsy is excited and so immediately runs into the room and
proceeds to give the birthday child a gift oblivious to
the fact that you are already into your show. She forces
the child to open the gift right then and there.
You
are left in a very awkward situation. Now this may seem
like a very crazy and extreme situation, but it does happen
and it happens in various degrees. You are in a house that
they are accustomed to being at. They tend to feel that
this is their environment and that you are just a part of
the overall fun happening. They tend to not see an issue
with interrupting the flow of the show.
So
how do you handle this? How do you go about trying to gain
control back and getting back into the show when a situation
like this unfolds?
The
kids all lose focus, they get involved in the present and
you are left with a situation of standing there lost and
trying to regain control. Part of you wants to latch out
at the rude individual but as a professional, you should
know that is certainly not an avenue you want to go down.
Certainly you do not want to go there with children present.
So
my options are to get rude and make a statement to the person
or choose to somehow maintain control of the situation and
maintain the focus back on me.
I
tend to allow the situation to happen because to try and
stop it cold turkey just leaves a bad taste in everyone's
mouth. It also is hard to get them to stop in the first
place and you tend to not be able to do it without being
rude and harsh.
Instead
I choose to be the center of attention. By that I mean that
I allow myself to become a part of it. To just stand there
and watch it happen and say nothing, gets folks to not pay
any attention to you at all. However, if you start to become
a part of the situation as it unfolds the focus is left
on you and you still look like the good guy.
So
what I tend to do is to talk up and act as an MC of sorts.
I am the one conducting the situation. As I start to talk,
people listen and I am in control of what happens. It many
ways I can direct it and steer it in any direction I want
it to go in. I can be funny, deliver comedy lines and be
excited about it as well. If handled right, I can get everyone
seeing me as a good guy, I gain control and I have it over
a lot faster.
I
might state that I am excited that she finally showed up.
I might say that we were waiting for her since we are having
SOOO much fun during the show and are sure that she will
as well. I might joke that the gift was for me and thank
her a lot for such a wonderful gift for the magician. By
doing so it becomes a part of the show itself. I can get
laughs but I am also subtlety letting her know the show
is taking place. I am doing so in a kind manner though.
I
may go on to complement such a nice gift and the paper is
so nice. I might suggest the child thanking the aunt and
to pass the card and gift to mom and dad so they can make
sure it doesn't get broken. I them can segue back into the
show at a faster pace.
So
as you can see this is never an ideal situation, but it
is one in which you can choose to remain in control. I feel
and act as if it was just another routine in my show. By
me speaking up and handling it as I do, it often goes over
just fine, the person gets the message clearly and I keep
the distraction to a minimum.
The
worse you can do is just stand there and allow it to happen
without saying anything. Then you become invisible and often
times it is impossible to get back into the performance.
Your momentum is killed and the flow of the show is shot.
I
am never there at a gig to be the bad guy. My goal is not
to upset people but to be a solutions provider any chance
I can get. This does not mean I allow people to ruin a show
or to act rude. However, handling it by remaining calm and
a part of the situation helps everyone to feel better about
it.
I
really think that by doing it this way so often, it becomes
second nature. Many times people totally are oblivious to
what is going on. It sounds stupid but many folks need a
friendly reminder that "um the show is going on and
you are taking away from it." Of course I would never
say that. However, I handle it in such a way that they start
to get the message clearly. They start to realize that I
am remaining in control and I am the ring master that controls
what happens.
So
if you are faced with a situation like this, do not skip
a beat. Instead be the one that takes control of what is
going on. Be the one who MC's the situation and by doing
so you will find the incident ends up in a much better way
and you are back into your show in no time.
As
always, I encourage you the readers to let me know your
thoughts. So if you have any thoughts on my articles or
suggestions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly

9. Joshua Jay Marries His Assistant
--------------------------------------------
Article forwarded by Mel Kientz (US)
The
New York Times
By
Glenn Collins
Joshua
Jay and Anna Kloots:
A Magician Marries His Assistant
The
groom? The magician Joshua Jay. The bride? Anna Kloots,
his magician's assistant. When Mr. Jay, 33, appears in a
straitjacket, Ms. Kloots, 26, pulls in people from the audience
to check the integrity of his bonds and his blindfold.
That's before "the two minutes or so it takes me to
escape," said Mr. Jay, who began performing magic at
8, and who now is an athletic 6-foot-3 and the embodiment
of the handsome prestidigitator. (Some have mistaken him
for Bradley Cooper.)
Afterward, Ms. Kloots, who quit her high-end sales job two
years ago to tour the world with her globe-trotting conjurer,
then helps him with performing other mystifying tricks.
"Everyone asks me if he saws me in half," she
said. "No way!"
Mr. Jay performs close-up magic (sleight-of-hand for small
groups), not those grand illusions with saw-through boxes
or vanishing tigers. Ms. Kloots acts as road manager and
helps tend to Mr. Jay's businesses, including an online
magic shop, magic conferences and speaking engagements.
"She is my full collaborator," he said, and she
helps conceive new tricks for him and other magicians. "And
she's my first audience," he added.
Their wedding August 29 at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan
was no less a performance. There were pop-up opera hats
and glitter-tossing flower girls. Coins mysteriously disappeared.
As their 130 guests looked on, whole card decks dematerialized,
as did a bowling ball.
"Just by asking Anna to marry him," said the bride's
father, Fred Kloots, "he made half my bank account
disappear."
For a time, her family had dubbed Ms. Kloots Jessica Simpson,
"because she has that bombshell look to her,"
her sister Amanda Kloots-Larsen said.
Mr. Jay had been friends with Ms. Kloots-Larsen since both
attended GlenOak High School in Canton, Ohio. "I became
the magician who moved to New York," he said, "and
Amanda became the dancer who moved to New York to become
a Rockette and a Broadway dancer in 'Bullets Over Broadway.'
"
In 2009, when Ms. Kloots moved to New York from Canton to
get a degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Ms.
Kloots-Larsen took baby sister under her wing.
One night Ms. Kloots-Larsen invited her sister for drinks
with some former high school classmates at the bar of Quality
Meats, the steakhouse on West 58th Street.
"I saw this tall, handsome guy heading my way and wondered
why he was coming toward me," Ms. Kloots said. "Then
Amanda said, 'Hey, Josh!' "
Thus, Ms. Kloots and Mr. Jay, a graduate of Ohio State,
met, and "we hit it off instantly," she said.
During their next encounter a few days later, which was
part of a grander work of illusion, "I really wanted
to ask her out," he said, "but I didn't want to
damage my friendship with Amanda." So he conjured up
a party a few days later and invited a dozen friends (including,
naturally, a sword-swallower and a fire-eater), along with
the Kloots sisters.
"I soon learned that Josh threw the whole party just
to see Anna," Ms. Kloots-Larsen said. "Then when
the party was over, Anna said 'I'd like to stay a while,'
and I smiled as I left because I guessed immediately what
was going on. I was O.K. with it. I'd known Josh forever,
and he's a great guy."
The couple's first date (at the Metropolitan Museum, given
their mutual enthusiasm for art) was followed by pizza at
Lombardi's on Spring Street, and their first kiss in the
taxi on the way back to her apartment.
"I was head over heels about her," Mr. Jay said.
"And we spent every day together the rest of that week.
But then, of course, I had to go to Japan to perform."
It was prophetic. They dated seriously for five years, and
during that time Mr. Jay, based in New York, traveled to
some 70 countries. Ms. Kloots studied at the American University
of Paris and then got a job in London as a saleswoman for
the Nanz Company, an haute designer of architectural hardware
for homes, offices and yachts.
"That time in London was very hard for us," she
said, "given the constant travel. So for a couple of
months, we cooled off and experienced what it was like to
go our own ways. Well, neither of us liked that very much."
So, when Ms. Kloots had a chance to return to Manhattan,
while continuing to work for Nanz, they became an item again.
Mr. Jay said he realized his total commitment to her during
his recuperation from a boating accident in which he severely
injured his left hand - potentially a career killer for
a close-up magician who practices three hours a day.
"I was bedridden for several months," he said,
"and she was totally with me." His hand healed
with the addition of a plate, pins and five screws, he said.
And he began performing again.
"I knew then that we could make a life together,"
he said.
And for Ms. Kloots came the realization that, though Mr.
Jay was "so captivating and generous," she said,
"I realized that even when you're sick and tired of
him, you want to be with him."
At that point, two years ago, "We knew we needed a
closer relationship," said Mr. Jay, who is the author
of six trade books for magicians and three books for the
general public, a lecturer on the history of magic and a
collector who has amassed 4,400 magical artifacts, including
a 1909 straitjacket worn by Harry Houdini. "We realized
the only way we could do it was to work together."
They have traveled nine months a year ever since.
Nevertheless, "marriage was at the forefront,"
he said. "Quitting her secure job and hitting the road
with her magician boyfriend was not going to work, unless
it was permanent."
Mr. Jay's subsequent marriage proposal was, unsurprisingly,
another neat bit of legerdemain. While on tour, they stayed
in a hotel on the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C.
"It had just started to rain, and Josh insisted on
taking Anna outside the hotel, where we were all in hiding,"
said Ms. Kloots's mother, Maureen Kloots, whom Mr. Jay had
secretly invited, along with her husband and Mr. Jay's mother
and stepfather, Trisha Ferruccio and Rocco Ferruccio of
Akron, Ohio, and other relatives.
Ms. Kloots initially protested, given the rain, but then
Mr. Jay got on one knee and proposed.
He had lain the groundwork in Canton by asking for Ms. Kloots's
hand. And just how did her parents react when they learned
their daughter would marry a magician? "It was sort
of like 'Father of the Bride,' " Mrs. Kloots said.
"We said, 'You're going to do what?' " She recalled,
laughing. "But we knew they're a great match for each
other, and Josh is wonderful."
"Josh's skill level is very, very high," said
Rune Klan, an acclaimed Danish magician who has known Mr.
Jay for two decades. "And as a lecturer on magic history
and practice, he's much sought-after. When Josh talks, magicians
listen."
At the ceremony, the Rev. Ryan Phipps of the Forefront Church
in Manhattan read the vows and presented Anna's wedding
ring. Mr. Jay, who is Jewish, seemed not to trust his magic
wand to make the glass disappear under the wedding canopy.
Following the prescribed Jewish tradition, he firmly stepped
on the cloth-covered wineglass, and as it was smashed his
family wished him good fortune.
Right before dinner, a group of world-class performers staged
an hour-long magic show.
Thanks to the eager perseverance of the guests, the wedding
cake, a banana chocolate-chip extravaganza by Ron Ben-Israel,
also disappeared.
But not before Mr. Kloots performed his first public magic
trick for the assembled guests, with the assistance of another
member of the Kloots clan.
Leaning into the microphone, the bride's 5-year-old niece,
Nina Marinelli, said "abracadabra," and instantly
an empty transparent foot-long box she and her grandfather
held filled with hundred-dollar bills.

Two
months ago The Society of American Magicians quietly launched
a new service to help point magicians around the world towards
the very best online content dealing with the Art of Magic.
That service is called The Magic Compass.
Initially
The Magic Compass was conceived as a newsletter styled email
that would point readers toward magic's best viral videos,
top news stories, exclusive offers, contests, polls, tricks
and more. People can sign up for that newsletter at http://goo.gl/5LnzN9.
The S.A.M. even produced a video to explain the idea that

As
The S.A.M. was developing this service the need for an anchoring
website became apparent and that is why The Magic Compass
is also a website that is regularly updated with the latest
online magic information. That website can be found at http://www.magic-compass.com.
Since
being launched, The Magic Compass has already delivered
news to thousands of readers. This week alone The Compass
has directed viewers to videos and posts of magician Nathan
J. Roberts making a little girl's parents reappear after
being deployed overseas, Justin Flom's Mega-Mix, Penn &
Teller's appearance on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon
and a Young and Strange magic Prank in England.
After
quietly launching The Magic Compass, The S.A.M. is now ready
for a full roll out. This service is not just for members
of The Society of American Magicians but for anyone with
an interest in The Art of Magic.
